Ordinary nematic liquid crystals are characterized by having a uniform director field as ground state. In such a state, the director is the same everywhere and no distortion is to be seen at all. We give a definition of uniform distortion which makes precise the intuitive notion of seeing everywhere the same director landscape. We characterize all such distortions and prove that they fall into two families, each described by two scalar parameters. Uniform distortions exhaust R. Meyer's heliconical structures, which, as it has recently been recognized, include the ground state of twist-bend nematics. The generalized elasticity of these new phases is treated with a simple free-energy density, which can be minimized by both uniform and non-uniform distortions, the latter injecting a germ of elastic frustration.
We analyse a recent generalised free-energy for liquid crystals posited by Virga and falling in the class of quartic functionals in the spatial gradients of the nematic director. We review some known interesting solutions, i. e., uniform heliconical structures, and we find new liquid crystal configurations, which closely resemble some novel, experimentally detected, structures called Skyrmion tubes. These new configurations are characterised by a localised pattern given by the variation of the conical angle. We study the equilibrium differential equations and find numerical solutions and analy…
Liquid-crystal networks consist of weakly crosslinked polymers that are coupled to liquid-crystal molecules. The resultant hybrid system has rich elastic properties. We develop a phase field model to describe mechanical properties of a hexagonal liquid-crystal network. The hexagonal liquid-crystal network is found to have soft shear deformations. The elastic properties are predicted analytically and confirmed with numerical simulations. In addition the model incorporates non-linear elasticity and dislocations or disclinations.
Liquid marbles are non-stick droplets covered with micro-scaled particles. Liquid marbles demonstrate quasi-elastic properties when pressed. The interpretation of the phenomenon of elasticity of liquid marbles is proposed. The model considering the growth in the marble surface in the course of deformation under the conservation of marbles volume explains semi-quantitatively the elastic properties of marbles in satisfactory agreement with the reported experimental data. The estimation of the effective Young modulus of marbles and its dependence on the marble volume are reported.
Ginzburg-Landau-de Gennes -type covariant theories are extensively used in connection with twist grain boundary (TGB) phases of chiral smectogens. We analyze the stability conditions for the linear, covariant elasticity theory of smectic-C liquid crystals in the context of achiral materials, and predict an equilibrium modulated structure with an oblique wavevector. We suggest that a previous experimental observation of stripes in smectic-C is consistent with the predicted structure.
Experimental observations of unexpected shear rigidity in confined liquids, on very low frequency scales on the order of 0.01-0.1 Hz, call into question our basic understanding of the elasticity of liquids and have posed a challenge to theoretical models of the liquid state ever since. Here we combine the nonaffine theory of lattice dynamics valid for disordered condensed matter systems with the Frenkel theory of the liquid state. The emerging framework shows that applying confinement to a liquid can effectively suppress the low frequency modes that are responsible for nonaffine soft mechanica…
An experimental and theoretical study of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) confined in cylinders with degenerate planar boundary conditions elucidates LCLC director configurations. When the Frank saddle-splay modulus is more than twice the twist modulus, the ground state adopts an inhomogeneous escaped-twisted configuration. Analysis of the configuration yields a large saddle-splay modulus, which violates Ericksen inequalities but not thermodynamic stability. Lastly, we observe point defects between opposite-handed domains and explain a preference for point defects over domain walls.
Using laser tweezers and fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy, we study colloidal interactions of solid microspheres in the nematic bulk caused by elastic distortions around the particles with strong tangential surface anchoring. The particles aggregate into chains directed at about 30 degrees to the far field director and, at higher concentrations, form complex kinetically trapped structures. We characterize the distance and angular dependencies of the colloidal interaction forces.
Liquid-liquid phase separation has emerged as a fundamental mechanism underlying intracellular organization, with evidence for it being reported in numerous different systems. However, there is a growing concern regarding the lack of quantitative rigor in the techniques employed to study phase separation, and their ability to account for the complex nature of the cellular milieu, which affects key experimentally observable measures, such as the shape, size and transport dynamics of liquid droplets. Here we bridge this gap by combining recent experimental data with theoretical predictions that …
The nonlinear elastic properties of nematic liquid crystals have acquired new interest with the recent experimental observation of bulk modulated nematic phases which are composed by achiral molecules. We extend the Oseen-Zocher-Frank's elastic theory for nematic liquid crystals by including gradients of the nematic strain tensor in the elastic deformation energy. The invariants of the elastic tensor fields, up to the fourth order in the nematic director spatial derivatives, are calculated. An alternative approach that consists in the extension of the linear elastic energy to higher powers of …
Soft-elasticity in monodomain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) is promising for impact-absorbing applications where strain energy is ideally absorbed at constant stress. Conventionally, compressive and impact studies on LCEs have not been performed given the notorious difficulty synthesizing sufficiently large monodomain devices. Here we demonstrate 3D printing bulk ($>cm^3$) monodomain LCE devices using direct ink writing and study their compressive soft-elasticity over 8 decades of strain rate. At quasi-static rates, the monodomain soft-elastic LCE dissipated 45% of strain energy while compa…
Resonant x-ray scattering shows that the bulk structure of the twist-bend liquid crystal phase, recently discovered in bent molecular dimers, has spatial periodicity without electron density modulation, indicating a lattice-free heliconical nematic precession of orientation that has helical glide symmetry. In situ study of the bulk helix texture for the dimer CB7CB shows an elastically-confined temperature-dependent minimum helix pitch, but a remarkable elastic softness of pitch in response to dilative stresses. Scattering from the helix is not detectable in the higher temperature nematic phas…
The capillary forces exerted by liquid drops and bubbles on a soft solid are directly measured using molecular dynamics simulations. The force on the solid by the liquid near the contact line is not oriented along the liquid vapor interface nor perpendicular to the solid surface, as usually assumed, but points towards the liquid. It is shown that the elastic deformations induced by this force can only be explained if, contrary to an incompressible liquid, the surface stress is different from the surface energy. Using thermodynamic variations we show that the the surface stress and the surface …
We study the elastic properties of thermotropic smectic liquid crystals with focal conic domains (FCDs). After the application of the controlled preshear at different temperatures, we independently measured the shear modulus G' and the FCD size L. We find out that these quantities are related by the scaling relation G' ~ γ_{eff}/L where γ_{eff} is the effective surface tension of the FCDs. The experimentally obtained value of γ_{\rm eff} shows the same scaling as the effective surface tension of the layered systems \sqrt{KB} where K and B are the bending modulus and the layer compression modul…
Models of smectic-C liquid crystal elastomers predict that it can display soft elasticity, in which the shape of the elastomer changes at no energy cost. The amplitude of the soft mode and the accompanying shears are dependent on the orientation of the layer normal and the director with respect to the stretch axis. We demonstrate that in some geometries the director is forced to rotate perpendicular to the stretch axis, causing lateral expansion of the sample; a negative Poisson's ratio. Current models do not include the effect of imperfections that must be present in the physical sample. We i…
Colloidal rods immersed in a thermotropic liquid-crystalline solvent are at the basis of so-called hybrid liquid crystals which are characterized by tunable nematic fluidity with symmetries ranging from conventional uniaxial nematic or anti-nematic to orthorhombic [Mundoor et al., Science 360, 768 (2018)]. We provide a theoretical analysis of the elastic moduli of such systems by considering interactions between the individual rods with the embedding solvent through surface-anchoring forces, as well as steric and electrostatic interactions between the rods themselves. For uniaxial systems the …
We study an elasticity model for compressed protein monolayers or particle rafts at a liquid interface. Based on the microscopic view of hard-core particles with soft shells, a bead-spring model is formulated and analyzed in terms of continuum elasticity theory. The theory can be applied, for example, to hydrophobin-coated air-water interfaces or, more generally, to liquid interfaces coated with an adsorbed monolayer of interacting hard-core particles. We derive constitutive relations for such particle rafts and describe the buckling of compressed planar liquid interfaces as well as their appa…
Advent of nematic liquid crystals flows have attracted renewed attention in view of microfluidic transport phenomena. Among various transport processes, electroosmosis stands as one of the efficient flow actuation method through narrow confinement. In the present study, we explore the electrically actuated flow of a nematic fluid with ionic inclusions taking into account the influences from surface induced elastic and electrical double layer phenomena. Influence of surface effects on the flow characteristics is known to get augmented in micro-confined environment and must be properly addressed…
We model polydomain liquid-crystal elastomers by extending the neo-classical soft and semi-soft free energies used successfully to describe monodomain samples. We show that there is a significant difference between polydomains cross-linked in homogeneous high symmetry states then cooled to low symmetry polydomain states and those cross-linked directly in the low symmetry polydomain state. For example, elastomers cross-linked in the isotropic state then cooled to a nematic polydomain will, in the ideal limit, be perfectly soft, and with the introduction of non-ideality, will deform at very low …
Liquid crystal elastomers realize a fascinating new form of soft matter that is a composite of a conventional crosslinked polymer gel (rubber) and a liquid crystal. These {\em solid} liquid crystal amalgams, quite similarly to their (conventional, fluid) liquid crystal counterparts, can spontaneously partially break translational and/or orientational symmetries, accompanied by novel soft Goldstone modes. As a consequence, these materials can exhibit unconventional elasticity characterized by symmetry-enforced vanishing of some elastic moduli. Thus, a proper description of such solids requires …
The capillary instability of liquid crystalline (LC) jets is considered in the framework of linear hydrodynamics of uniaxial nematic LC. The free boundary conditions of the problem are formulated in terms of mean surface curvature ${\cal H}$ and Gaussian surface curvature ${\cal G}$. The static version of capillary instability is shown to depend on the elasticity modulus $K$, surface tension $σ_0$, and radius $r_0$ of the LC jet, as expressed by the characteristic parameter $\varkappa=K/σ_0 r_0$. The problem of capillary instability in LC jets is solved exactly and a dispersion relation, which…
We propose an extension of Frank-Oseen's elastic energy for bulk nematic liquid crystals which is based on the hypothesis that the fundamental deformations allowed in nematic liquid crystals are splay, twist and bend. The extended elastic energy is a fourth order form in the fundamental deformations. The existence of bulk spontaneous modulated or deformed nematic liquid crystal ground states is investigated. The analysis is limited to bulk nematic liquid crystals in the absence of limiting surfaces and/or external fields. The non deformed ground state is stable only when Frank-Oseen's elastic …
The physical mechanism of elasticity of liquid surfaces coated with colloidal particles is proposed. It is suggested that particles are separated by water clearings and the capillary interaction between them is negligible. The case is treated when the colloidal layer is deformed normally to its surface. The elasticity arises as an interfacial effect. The effective Young modulus of a surface depends on the interfacial tension, equilibrium contact angle, radius of colloidal particles and their surface density. For the nanometrically scaled particles the line tension becomes essential and has an …
In equilibrium liquid crystals, chirality leads to a variety of spectacular three-dimensional structures, but chiral and achiral phases with the same broken continuous symmetries have identical long-time, large-scale dynamics. In this paper, we demonstrate that chirality qualitatively modifies the dynamics of layered liquid crystals in active systems in both two and three dimensions due to an active "odder" elasticity. In three dimensions, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamics of active cholesterics differs fundamentally from smectic-A liquid crystals, unlike their equilibrium counterpart. Thi…
We study photopolymerization in a low-molecular weight liquid crystal with non-uniform director gradients. Phase separation results in spatially non-uniform distribution of polymer density controlled by the distorted nematic matrix. Director-gradient-controlled polymerization provides a new and useful technique to assemble micron-scale polymer architectures.
We explore micropatterned director structures of aqueous lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (LCLC) films created on square lattice cylindrical-micropost substrates. The structures are manipulated by modulating the LCLC mesophases and their elastic properties via concentration through drying. Nematic LCLC films exhibit preferred bistable alignment along the diagonals of the micropost lattice. Columnar LCLC films, dried from nematics, form two distinct director and defect configurations: a diagonally aligned director pattern with local squares of defects, and an off-diagonal configuration with z…
This paper presents the derivation of the homogenized equations that describe the macroscopic mechanical response of elastomers filled with liquid inclusions in the setting of small quasistatic deformations. The derivation is carried out for materials with periodic microstructure by means of a two-scale asymptotic analysis. The focus is on the non-dissipative case when the elastomer is an elastic solid, the liquid making up the inclusions is an elastic fluid, the interfaces separating the solid elastomer from the liquid inclusions are elastic interfaces featuring an initial surface tension, an…
General symmetry arguments, dating back to de Gennes dictate that at scales longer than the pitch, the low-energy elasticity of a chiral nematic liquid crystal (cholesteric) and of a Dzyaloshinskii-Morya (DM) spiral state in a helimagnet with negligible crystal symmetry fields (e.g., MnSi, FeGe) is identical to that of a smectic liquid crystal, thereby inheriting its rich phenomenology. Starting with a chiral Frank free-energy (exchange and DM interactions of a helimagnet) we present a transparent derivation of the fully nonlinear Goldstone mode elasticity, which involves an analog of the Ande…
We develop a segment-scale, force-based theory for the breakdown of the unentangled Rouse model and subsequent emergence of isotropic mesoscopic localization and entropic elasticity in chain polymer liquids in the absence of ergodicity-restoring anisotropic reptation motion. The theory is formulated in terms of a conformational N-dynamic-order-parameter Generalized Langevin Equation approach. It is implemented using a field-theoretic Gaussian thread model of polymer structure and closed in a universal manner at the level of the chain dynamic second moment matrix. The physical idea is that the …
We study stability and distortions of liquid crystal nematic order in a cell with a random heterogeneous substrate. Modeling this system as a bulk xy model with quenched disorder confined to a surface, we find that nematic order is marginally unstable to such surface pinning. We compute the length scale beyond which nematic distortions become large and calculate orientational correlation functions using the functional renormalization-group and matching methods, finding universal logarithmic and double-logarithmic distortions in two and three dimensions, respectively. We extend these results to…
We investigate the dynamics of freely expanding liquid sheets prepared with fluids with different rheological properties, (i) viscous fluids with a zero-shear viscosity $η_0$ in the range $(1-1000) \, \mathrm{mPa.s}$ and (ii) viscoelastic Maxwell fluids whose elastic modulus, $G_0$, characteristic relaxation time, $τ$, and zero-shear viscosity, $η_0=G_0 τ$, can be tuned over several orders of magnitude. The sheets are produced by impacting a drop of fluid on a small cylindrical solid target. For viscoelastic fluids, we show that, when $τ$ is shorter than the typical lifetime of the sheet ($\si…
Active materials are those in which individual, uncoordinated local stresses drive the material out of equilibrium on a global scale. Examples of such assemblies can be seen across scales from schools of fish to the cellular cytoskeleton and underpin many important biological processes. Synthetic experiments that recapitulate the essential features of such active systems have been the object of study for decades as their simple rules allow us to elucidate the physical underpinnings of collective motion. One system of particular interest has been active nematic liquid crystals (LCs). Because of…
We study pattern formation in gels undergoing simultaneous phase separation and orientational ordering. A 2D numerical simulation is performed using a minimal model of nonlinear elasticity with density-anisotropy coupling. For strong positive coupling, the collapsed phase elongates along the phase boundary and buckles, creating a folded structure with paired topological defects. For negative coupling, soft elasticity of the swollen phase causes a droplet morphology as in liquid-liquid phase separation. Their possible realizations in nematic liquid-crystalline gels are discussed.
The classical theory of liquid crystal elasticity as formulated by Oseen and Frank describes the (orientable) optic axis of these soft materials by a director $\mathbf{n}$. The ground state is attained when $\mathbf{n}$ is uniform in space; all other states, which have a non-vanishing gradient $\nabla\mathbf{n}$, are distorted. This paper proposes an algebraic (and geometric) way to describe the local distortion of a liquid crystal by constructing from $\mathbf{n}$ and $\nabla\mathbf{n}$ a third-rank, symmetric and traceless tensor $\mathbf{A}$ (the octupolar tensor). The (nonlinear) eigenvect…
We propose a microscopic picture for understanding the nonlinear rheology of supercooled liquids with soft-repulsive potentials. Based on Brownian dynamics simulations of supercooled charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions, our analysis shows that the shear thinning of viscosity (eta) at large enough shear rates (sr), expressed as eta~sr^(-lambda), originates from the evolution of the localized elastic region (LER). An LER is a transient region composed of the first several coordination shells of a reference particle. In response to the external shear, particles within LER undergo nearly affin…
Achieving control and tunability of lyotropic materials has been a long-standing goal of liquid crystal research. Here we show that the elasticity of a liquid crystal system consisting of a dense suspension of semiflexible biopolymers can be manipulated over a relatively wide range of elastic moduli. Specifically, thin films of actin filaments are assembled at an oil-water interface. At sufficiently high concentrations, one observes the formation of a nematic phase riddled with $\pm1/2$ topological defects, characteristic of a two-dimensional nematic system. As the average filament length incr…
A recent study has demonstrated that phase separation in binary liquid mixtures is arrested in the presence of elastic networks and can lead to a nearly uniformly-sized distribution of the dilute-phase droplets. At longer timescales, these droplets exhibit a directional preference to migrate along elastic property gradients to form a front of dissolving droplets [K. A. Rosowski, T. Sai, E. Vidal-Henriquez, D. Zwicker, R. W. Style, E. R. Dufresne, Elastic ripening and inhibition of liquid-liquid phase separation, Nature Physics (2020) 1-4]. In this work, we develop a complete theoretical unders…
The thermodynamics and dynamics of supercooled liquids correlate with their elasticity. In particular for covalent networks, the jump of specific heat is small and the liquid is {\it strong} near the threshold valence where the network acquires rigidity. By contrast, the jump of specific heat and the fragility are large away from this threshold valence. In a previous work [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 110, 6307 (2013)], we could explain these behaviors by introducing a model of supercooled liquids in which local rearrangements interact via elasticity. However, in that model the disorder char…
Mixing colloid shapes with distinctly different anisotropy generates composite nematics in which the order of the individual components can be fundamentally different. In colloidal rod-disk mixtures or hybrid nematics composed of anisotropic colloids immersed in a thermotropic liquid crystal, one of the components may adopt so-called anti-nematic order while the other exhibits conventional nematic alignment. Focussing on simple models for hard rods and disks, we employ Onsager-Straley's second-virial theory to derive scaling expressions for the elastic moduli of rods and disks in both nematic …
A liquid surface touching a solid usually deforms in a near-wall meniscus region. In this work, we replace part of the free surface with a soft polymer and examine the shape of this elasto-capillary meniscus, result of the interplay between elasticity, capillarity and hydrostatic pressure. We focus particularly on the extraction threshold for the soft object. Indeed, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically the existence of a limit height of liquid tenable before breakdown of the compound, and extraction of the object. Such an extraction force is known since Laplace and Gay-Lussac,…
Viscous droplets impinging on soft substrates may exhibit several distinct behaviours including repeated bouncing, wetting, and hovering, i.e., spreading and retracting after impact without bouncing back or wetting. We experimentally study the conditions enabling these characteristic behaviours by systematically varying the substrate elasticity, impact velocity and the liquid viscosity. For each substrate elasticity, the transition to wetting is determined as the dependence of the Weber number We, which measures the droplet's kinetic energy against its surface energy, on the Ohnesorge number O…
This review introduces the elasticity theory of two-dimensional crystals and nematic liquid crystals on curved surfaces, the energetics of topological defects (disclinations, dislocations and pleats) in these ordered phases, and the interaction of defects with the underlying curvature. This chapter concludes with two cases of three-dimensional nematic phases confined to spaces with curved boundaries, namely a torus and a spherical shell.
This article models experimentally observed three dimensional particle-like waves that develop in nematic liquid crystals, with negative dielectric and conductive anisotropy, when subject to an applied alternating electric field. The liquid crystal is confined in a thin region between two plates, perpendicular to the applied field. The horizontal, uniformly aligned director field is at equilibrium due to the negative anisotropy of the media. However, such a state is unstable to perturbations that manifest themselves as confined, bullet-like, director distortions traveling up and down the sampl…
We give a description of the intrinsic geometry of elastic distortions in three-dimensional nematic liquid crystals and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of functions to represent these distortions by describing how they couple to the curvature tensor. We demonstrate that, in contrast to the situation in two dimensions, the first-order gradients of the director alone are not sufficient for full reconstruction of the director field from its intrinsic geometry: it is necessary to provide additional information about the second-order director gradients. We describe several d…
