We study stability and distortions of liquid crystal nematic order in a cell with a random heterogeneous substrate. Modeling this system as a bulk xy model with quenched disorder confined to a surface, we find that nematic order is marginally unstable to such surface pinning. We compute the length scale beyond which nematic distortions become large and calculate orientational correlation functions using the functional renormalization-group and matching methods, finding universal logarithmic and double-logarithmic distortions in two and three dimensions, respectively. We extend these results to a finite-thickness liquid crystal cell with a second homogeneous substrate, detailing crossovers as a function of random pinning strength and cell thickness. We conclude with analysis of experimental signatures of these distortions in a conventional crossed-polarizer-analyzer light microscopy.
We study the behavior of negatively charged colloids with two positively charged polar caps close to a planar patterned surface. The competition between the different anisotropic components of the particle-particle interaction patterns is able by itself to give rise to a rich assembly scenario: colloids with charged surface patterns form different crystalline domains when adsorbed to a homogeneously charged substrate. Here we consider substrates composed of alternating (negative/neutral, positive/neutral and positive/negative) parallel stripes and, by means of Monte Carlo simulations, we inves…
We present a molecular dynamics study of the motion of cylindrical polymer droplets on striped surfaces. We first consider the equilibrium properties of droplets on different surfaces, we show that for small stripes the Cassie-Baxter equation gives a good approximation of the equilibrium contact angle. As the stripe width becomes non-negligible compared to the dimension of the droplets, the droplet has to deform significantly to minimize its free energy, this results in a smaller value of the contact angle than the continuum model predicts. We then evaluate the slip length, and thus the dampin…
Understanding the drift motion and dynamical locking of crystalline clusters on patterned substrates is important for the diffusion and manipulation of nano- and micro-scale objects on surfaces. In a previous work, we studied the orientational and directional locking of colloidal two-dimensional clusters with triangular structure driven across a triangular substrate lattice. Here we show with experiments and simulations that such locking features arise for clusters with arbitrary lattice structure sliding across arbitrary regular substrates. Similar to triangular-triangular contacts, orientati…
