The energy density, the pressure and the anisotropic stress of the relic gravitons do not have a unique gauge-invariant and frame-invariant expression since the equivalence principle ultimately forbids the localization of the energy-momentum of the gravitational field. All the strategies proposed so far suggest compatible descriptions inside the effective horizon but they lead to sharply different answers when the wavelengths of the gravitons exceed the Hubble radius by remaining shorter than the typical extension of causally connected patches. We present a coherent discussion of the energy-momentum pseudo-tensors of the relic gravitons in the different kinematical regimes with the aim of scrutinizing the mutual consistency of the competing suggestions. The various proposals are systematically compared by deducing and analyzing the explicit form of the observables in realistic physical situations. General lessons are drawn on the most plausible parametrization of the energy-momentum pseudo-tensor of the relic gravitons.
The polarizations of the tensor modes of the geometry evolving in cosmological backgrounds are treated as the components of a bispinor whose dynamics follows from an appropriate gauge-invariant action. This novel framework bears a close analogy with the (optical) Jones calculus and leads to a compact classification of the various interactions able to polarize the relic gravitons.
The tensor contribution to the $V$-mode polarization induced by a magnetized plasma at last scattering vanishes exactly. Conversely a polarized background of relic gravitons cannot generate a $V$-mode polarization. The reported results suggest that, in the magnetized $Λ$CDM paradigm, the dominant source of circular dichroism stems from the large-scale fluctuations of the spatial curvature.
Stochastic backgrounds or relic gravitons, if ever detected, will constitute a prima facie evidence of physical processes taking place during the earliest stages of the evolution of the plasma. The essentials of the stochastic backgrounds of relic gravitons are hereby introduced and reviewed. The pivotal observables customarily employed to infer the properties of the relic gravitons are discussed both in the framework of the $Λ$CDM paradigm as well as in neighboring contexts. The complementarity between experiments measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (such as, for ins…
Stochastic backgrounds of relic gravitons of cosmological origin extend from frequencies of the order of the aHz up to the GHz range. Since the temperature and polarization anisotropies constrain the low frequency normalization of the spectra, in the concordance paradigm the strain amplitude corresponding to the frequency window of wide-band interferometers turns out to be, approximately, nine orders of magnitude smaller than the astounding signal recently reported and attributed to a binary black hole merger. The backgrounds of relic gravitons expected from the early Universe are compared wit…
In conformally flat background geometries the long wavelength gravitons can be described in the fluid approximation and they induce scalar fluctuations both during inflation and in the subsequent radiation-dominated epoch. While this effect is minute and suppressed for a de Sitter stage of expansion, the fluctuations of the energy-momentum pseudo-tensor of the graviton fluid lead to curvature perturbations that increase with time all along the post-inflationary evolution. An explicit calculation of these effects is presented for a standard thermal history and it is shown that the growth of the…
The coherence of the relic gravitons is investigated within a quantum mechanical perspective. After introducing the notion and the properties of the generalized Glauber correlators valid in the tensor case, the degrees of first- and second-order coherence are evaluated both inside and beyond the effective horizon. The inclusive approach (encompassing the polarizations of the gravitons) is contrasted with the exclusive approximation where the total intensity is calculated either from a single polarization or even from a single mode of the field. While the relic gravitons reentering the effectiv…
We investigate the impact of the post-inflationary thermal histories on the cosmic graviton spectrum caused by the inflationary variation of their refractive index. Depending on the frequency band, the spectral energy distribution can be mildly red, blue or even violet. Wide portions of the parameter space lead to potentially relevant signals both in the audio range (probed by the advanced generation of terrestrial interferometers) and in the mHz band (where space-borne detectors could be operational within the incoming score year). The description of the refractive index in conformally relate…
The tensor modes reentering the Hubble radius when the plasma is dominated by a stiff fluid lead to a spectral energy density whose blue slope depends on the total post-inflationary sound speed. This result gets however corrected by a secondary (gauge-dependent) term coming from the curvature inhomogeneities that reenter all along the same stage of expansion. In comparison with the first-order result, the secondary contribution is shown to be always suppressed inside the sound horizon and its effect on the total spectral energy density of the relic gravitons is therefore negligible for all phe…
In the same way as the energy density associated with the tensor modes of the geometry modifies the evolution of the curvature perturbations, the scalar modes may also indirectly affect the cosmic backgrounds of relic gravitons by inducing higher-order corrections that are only superficially gauge-invariant. This spurious gauge-invariance gets manifest when the effective anisotropic stresses, computed in different coordinate systems, are preliminarily expressed in a form that only depends on the curvature inhomogeneities defined on comoving orthogonal hypersurfaces and on their corresponding t…
The degree of second-order coherence of the relic gravitons produced from the vacuum is super-Poissonian and larger than in the case of a chaotic source characterized by a Bose-Einstein distribution. If the initial state does not minimize the tensor Hamiltonian and has a dispersion smaller than its averaged multiplicity, the overall statistics is by definition sub-Poissonian. Depending on the nature of the sub-Poissonian initial state, the final degree of second-order coherence of the quanta produced by stimulated emission may diminish (possibly even below the characteristic value of a chaotic…
The dynamical evolution of the refractive index of the tensor modes of the geometry produces a specific class of power spectra characterized by a blue (i.e. slightly increasing) slope which is directly determined by the competition of the slow-roll parameter and of the rate of variation of the refractive index. Throughout the conventional stages of the inflationary and post-inflationary evolution, the microwave background anisotropies measurements, the pulsar timing limits and the big-bang nucleosythesis constraints set stringent bounds on the refractive index and on its rate of variation. Wit…
If the refractive index of the relic gravitons increases during a conventional stage of inflationary evolution the spectral energy density is blue at intermediate frequencies above the fHz and then flattens out after a knee that is typically smaller than the mHz. We investigate here the conditions leading to a sufficiently large spectral energy density in the nHz range where some peculiar signatures observed with the pulsar timing arrays have been recently attributed to cosmic gravitons. If these potential evidences are combined with the most recent bounds provided by wide-band interferometers…
The early expansion history of the Universe is constrained by combining the most recent limits on the cosmic gravitons in the audio band and the claimed evidences of the nHz domain. The simplest scenario stipulates that between the end of inflation and the formation of light nuclei the evolution consists of a single phase expanding at a rate that is either faster or slower than the one of radiation. If there are instead multiple post-inflationary stages evolving at different rates, the spectral energy density always undershoots the signals potentially attributed to relic gravitons by the pulsa…
I discuss the status of present knowledge about a possible background of relic gravitons left by an early, pre-big bang cosmological epoch, whose existence in the past of our Universe is suggested by the duality symmetries of string theory.
The spectrum of relic gravitational wave (RGW) contains high-frequency divergences, which should be removed. We present a systematic study of the issue, based on the exact RGW solution that covers the five stages, from inflation to the acceleration, each being a power law expansion. We show that the present RGW consists of vacuum dominating at $f>10^{11}$Hz and graviton dominating at $f<10^{11}$Hz, respectively. The gravitons are produced by the four cosmic transitions, mostly by the inflation-reheating one. We perform adiabatic regularization to remove vacuum divergences in three schemes: at …
The dynamical effects of the tensor modes of the geometry are investigated in the context of curvature bounces. Since the bouncing behaviour implies sharp deviations from a radiation-dominated evolution, significant back-reaction effects of relic gravitons may be expected at short wavelengths. After developing a general iterative framework for the calculation of dynamical back-reaction effects, explicit analytical and numerical examples are investigated for different parametrizations of the energy-momentum pseudo-tensor(s) of the produced gravitons. The reported results suggest that dynamical …
The spectra of the relic gravitons are customarily normalized in the low-frequency domain where the signal of the concordance paradigm is expected to peak and this is why their contribution to the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the microwave background is only described by the tensor to scalar ratio. If the consistency relations are broken, the same strategy is accomplished by introducing the tensor spectral index as a further independent parameter. When the dominant component of the spectral energy density is distributed for frequencies much larger than the aHz, the logic behind…
Absent any indirect tests on the thermal history of the Universe prior to the formation of light nuclear elements, it is legitimate to investigate situations where, before nucleosyntheis, the sound speed of the plasma was larger than $c/\sqrt{3}$, at most equalling the speed of light $c$. In this plausible extension of the current cosmological paradigm, hereby dubbed Tensor-$Λ$CDM (i.e. T$Λ$CDM) scenario, high-frequency gravitons are copiously produced. Without conflicting with the bounds on the tensor to scalar ratio stemming from the combined analysis of the three standard cosmological data …
Using general arguments we determine the allowed region for the end point frequency and the peak energy density of the stochastic background of gravity waves expected in string cosmology. We provide an accurate estimate of the minimal experimental sensitivity required to detect a signal in the Hz to GHz range.
Provided the consistency relations are not violated, the recent Bicep2 observations pin down the absolute normalization, the spectral slope and the maximal frequency of the cosmic graviton background produced during inflation. The properly normalized spectra are hereby computed from the lowest frequencies (of the order of the present Hubble rate) up to the highest frequency range in the GHz region. Deviations from the conventional paradigm cannot be excluded and are examined by allowing for different physical possibilities including, in particular, a running of the tensor spectral index, an ex…
In the context of the pre-Big Bang scenario of string cosmology, we propose a modified equation for the evolution of the tensor perturbations, which includes the full contribution of possible higher-order curvature and coupling corrections required to regularise the background evolution. We then discuss the high-frequency branch of the spectrum of primordial gravitons.
Conversion of gravitational waves into electromagnetic radiation is discussed. The probability of transformations of gravitons into photons in presence of cosmological background magnetic field is calculated at the recombination epoch and during subsequent cosmological stages. The produced electromagnetic radiation is concentrated in the X-ray part of the spectrum. It is shown that if the early Universe was dominated by primordial black holes (PBHs) prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), the relic gravitons emitted by PBHs would transform to an almost isotropic background of electromagnetic …
The effective anisotropic stresses induced by the scalar modes of the geometry depend on the coordinate system so that the comparison of the competing results is ultimately determined by the evolution of the pivotal variables in each particular gauge. After arguing that the only reasonable physical coordinate systems for this problem are the ones where the gauge freedom is completely fixed (like the longitudinal and the uniform curvature gauges), we propose a novel gauge-invariant strategy for the comparison of gauge-dependent results. Instead of employing the pivotal variables of a given coor…
A large class of quintessential inflationary models, recently proposed by Peebles and Vilenkin, leads to post-inflationary phases whose effective equation of state is stiffer than radiation. The expected gravitational waves logarithmic energy spectra are tilted towards high frequencies and characterized by two parameters: the inflationary curvature scale at which the transition to the stiff phase occurs and the number of (non conformally coupled) scalar degrees of freedom whose decay into fermions triggers the onset of a gravitational reheating of the Universe. Depending upon the parameters of…
We discuss the cosmological amplification of tensor perturbations in a simple example of brane-world scenario, in which massless gravitons are localized on a higher-dimensional Kasner-like brane embedded in a bulk AdS background. Particular attention is paid to the canonical normalization of the quadratic action describing the massless and massive vacuum quantum fluctuations, and to the exact mass-dependence of the amplitude of massive fluctuations on the brane. The perturbation equations can be separated. In contrast to de Sitter models of brane inflation, we find no mass gap in the spectrum …
Previously it was shown that there exists a class of viscous cosmological models which violate the dominant energy condition for a limited amount of time after which they are smoothly connected to the ordinary radiation era (which preserves the dominant energy conditions). This violation of the dominant energy condition at an early cosmological epoch may influence the slopes of energy spectra of relic gravitons that might be of experimental relevance. However, the bulk viscosity coefficient of these cosmologies became negative during the ordinary radiation era, and then the entropy of the sour…
According to the common wisdom, between a fraction of the mHz and few Hz the spectral energy density of the inflationary gravitons can be safely disregarded even assuming the most optimistic sensitivities of the space-borne detectors. In this analysis we show that this conclusion is evaded if, prior to nucleosynthesis, the post-inflationary evolution includes a sequence of stages expanding either faster or slower than radiation. As a consequence, contrary to the conventional lore, it is shown that below a fraction of the Hz the spectral energy density of the relic gravitons may exceed (even by…

The sensitivity of a pair of VIRGO interferometers to gravitational waves backgrounds of cosmological origin is analyzed for the cases of maximal and minimal overlap of the two detectors. The improvements in the detectability prospects of scale-invariant and non-scale-invariant logarithmic energy spectra of relic gravitons are discussed.
The high-frequency gravitons can be absorbed by the first and second viscosities of the post-inflationary plasma as the corresponding wavelengths reenter the Hubble radius prior to big-bang nucleosynthesis. When the total sound speed of the medium is stiffer than radiation the rate of expansion still exceeds the shear rate but the bulk viscosity is not negligible. Depending on the value of the entropy density at the end of inflation the spectral energy density of the relic gravitons gets modified in comparison with the inviscid result when the frequency ranges between the kHz band and the GHz …
We show that the spectral energy distribution of relic gravitons mildly increases for frequencies smaller than the $μ$Hz and then flattens out whenever the refractive index of the tensor modes is dynamical during a quasi-de Sitter stage of expansion. For a conventional thermal history the high-frequency plateau ranges between the mHz and the audio band but it is supplemented by a spike in the GHz region if a stiff post-inflationary phase precedes the standard radiation-dominated epoch. Even though the slope is blue at intermediate frequencies, it may become violet in the MHz window. For a vari…
If the refractive index of the tensor modes increases during a conventional inflationary stage of expansion the relic graviton spectrum is tilted towards high frequencies. Two apparently diverse parametrizations of this effect are shown to be related by a rescaling of the four-dimensional metric through a conformal factor that involves the refractive index itself. Non-monotonic spectra with a maximum in the MHz region correspond to a limited variation of the refractive index terminating well before the end of inflation. After exploring a general approach encompassing the ones proposed so far, …
We compute the spectrum of relic gravitons in a model of string cosmology. In the low- and in the high-frequency limits we reproduce known results. The full spectrum, however, also displays a series of oscillations which could give a characteristic signature at the planned LIGO/VIRGO detectors. For special values of the parameters of the model the signal reaches its maximum already at frequencies accessible to LIGO and VIRGO and it is close to the sensitivity of first generation experiments.
We treat quantum creation of gravitons by small scale factor oscillations around the average of an expanding universe. Such oscillations can arise in standard general relativity due to oscillations of a homogeneous, minimally coupled scalar field. They can also arise in modified gravity theories with a term proportional to the square of the Ricci scalar in the gravitational action. The graviton wave equation is different in the two cases, leading to somewhat different creation rates. Both cases are treated using a perturbative method due to Birrell and Davies, involving an expansion in a confo…
We investigate SU(5) and SO(10) GUTs with vanishing scalar masses and trilinear scalar couplings at a scale higher than the unification scale. The parameter space of the models, further constrained by b-τYukawa coupling unification, consists of a common gaugino mass and of \tanβ. We analyze the low energy phenomenology, finding that A-pole annihilations of neutralinos and/or coannihilations with the lightest stau drive the relic density within the cosmologically preferred range in a significant region of the allowed parameter space. Implications for neutralino direct detection and for CERN LHC…
We discuss the effect of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of bulk metric perturbations on the second Randall-Sundrum (RS II) type brane cosmology, taking the possible backreaction in the bulk and on the brane into account. KK gravitons may be produced via quantum fluctuations during a de Sitter (dS) inflating phase of our brane universe. In an effective 4-dimensional theory in which one integrates out the extra-dimensional dependence in the action, KK gravitons are equivalent to massive gravitons on the brane with masses $m>3H/2$, where $H$ represents the expansion rate of a dS brane. Thus production o…
We revisit the problem of the helicity-0 ghost mode of massive graviton in the de Sitter background. In general, the presence of a ghost particle, which has negative energy, drives the vacuum to be unstable through pair production of ghost particles and ordinary particles. In the case that the vacuum state preserves the de Sitter invariance, the number density created by the pair production inevitably diverges due to unsuppressed ultra-violet(UV) contributions. In such cases one can immediately conclude that the model is not viable. However, in the massive gravity theory we cannot construct a …
