We investigate quantum correlations between successive steps of black hole evaporation and investigate whether they might resolve the black hole information paradox. 'Small' corrections in various models were shown to be unable to restore unitarity. We study a toy qubit model of evaporation that allows small quantum correlations between successive steps and reaffirm previous results. Then, we relax the 'smallness' condition and find a nontrivial upper and lower bound on the entanglement entropy change during the evaporation process. This gives a quantitative measure of the size of the correction needed to restore unitarity. We find that these entanglement entropy bounds lead to a significant deviation from the expected Page curve.
We investigate whether or not the Hawking-Page phase transition is possible to occur in three dimensions. Starting with the simplest class of Lanczos-Lovelock action, thermodynamic behavior of all AdS-type black holes without charge falls into two classes: Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in even dimensions and Chern-Simons black holes in odd dimensions. The former class can provide the Hawking-Page transition between Schwarzschild-AdS black holes and thermal AdS space. On the other hand, the latter class is exceptional and thus the Hawking-Page transition is hard to occur. In three dimensions, a…
We show that the Hawking-Page phase transition of a CFT on AdS_{d-1} weakly coupled to gravity has a dual bulk description in terms of a phase transition between a black string and a thermal gas on AdS_{d}. At even lower temperatures the black string develops a Gregory Laflamme instability, which is dual to black hole evaporation in the boundary theory.
We study the Hawking-Page transition in a holographic model of field theories with momentum dissipation. We find that the deconfinement temperature strictly decreases as momentum dissipation is increased. For sufficiently strong momentum dissipation, the critical temperature goes to zero, indicating a zero-temperature deconfinement transition in the dual field theory.
The free energies of the conformal field theories dual to charged adS and rotating adS black holes show Hawking-Page phase transition. We study the transition by constructing boundary free energies in terms of order parameters. This is done by employing Landau's phenomenological theory of first order phase transition. The Cardy-Verlinde formula is then showed to follow quite naturally. We further make some general observations on the Cardy-Verlinde formula and the first order phase transition.
Universal relations and constants have important applications in understanding a physical theory. In this article, we explore this issue for Hawking-Page phase transitions in Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter black holes. We find a novel exact dual relation between the minimum temperature of the ($d$+1)-dimensional black hole and the Hawking-Page phase transition temperature in $d$ dimensions, reminiscent of the holographic principle. Furthermore, we find that the normalized Ruppeiner scalar curvature is a universal constant at the Hawking-Page transition point. Since the Ruppeiner curvature can be…
We compute the O(alpha'^3) corrections to the AdS_5 Black hole metric in type IIB string theory. Contrary to previous work in this direction we keep the Black Hole radius finite. Thus the topology of the boundary is S^3 x S^1. We find the corrections to the free energy and the critical temperature of the phase transition.
We study the thermodynamic phase diagram of three-dimensional $sl(N;\mathbb{R})$ higher spin black holes. By analyzing the semi-classical partition function we uncover a rich structure that includes Hawking-Page transitions to the AdS$_3$ vacuum, first order phase transitions among black hole states, and a second order critical point. Our analysis is explicit for $N=4$ but we extrapolate some of our conclusions to arbitrary $N$. In particular, we argue that even $N$ is stable in the ensemble under consideration but odd $N$ is not.
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics especially the Hawking-Page-like phase transition of the McVittie space-time. We formulate the first law of thermodynamics for the McVittie black hole, and find that the work density $W$ of the perfect fluid plays the role of the thermodynamic pressure, i.e. $P$:=$-W$. We also construct the thermodynamic equation of state for the McVittie black hole. Most importantly, by analysing the Gibbs free energy, we find that the Hawking-Page-like phase transition from FRW spacetime to McVittie black hole is possible in the case $P>0$.
Probing the thermodynamic properties of the Hawking-Page phase transition of asymptotically-flat black holes in Rényi statistics. We reveal the evidence for the persisting of the dual universal formula associated with the Hawking-Page (HP) and minimum black hole thermodynamical transition points. Our study unveils the universal properties of the black holes in different statistics, in particular beyond the Gibbs-Boltzmann formalism, and motivates a further promising bridge between the nonextensivity Rényi parameter λ and the cosmological constant ? . Besides, we discover that universal ratios …
In the context of black hole chemistry, we study the thermodynamics of asymptotically de Sitter black holes with conformal scalar hair in Einstein gravity. The hair parameter allows us to attain thermodynamic equilibrium between the event horizon and the cosmological horizon. We find that the system of the black hole and the de Sitter space surrounding it undergo a Reverse Hawking-Page phase transition provided we consider the grand-canonical ensemble.
We construct a phenomenological conformal field theory (CFT) model of the three-dimensional Hawking-Page transition. We find that free fermion CFT models on the boundary torus give a description of the three-dimensional Hawking-Page transition. If modular invariance is respected, the free fermion model implies that the transition occurs continuously through the conical space phase and the small black hole phase. On the other hand, if we are allowed to break modular invariance, we can construct a free fermion model that reproduces the usual Euclidean semi-classical result, and in particular exh…
We study the generalized entanglement entropy in the higher dimensional two-sided eternal black hole by double holography. By introducing an end-of-the-world ETW brane, which defines the time-dependent effective Hawking radiation region, we find a new type of Ryu-Takayanagi surface besides the Hartman-Maldacena surface and the island Ryu-Takayanagi surface known previously. We study the phase transition among the three Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces at different temperatures and obtain the phase diagram as well as the Page curve.
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the Hawking-Page phase transition of AdS black holes. We present evidence for the existence of two universal critical constants associated with the Hawking-Page (HP) and minimum black hole thermodynamical transition points. These constants are defined by C_S =\frac{S_{HP}-S_{min}}{S_{min}} and C_T =\frac{T_{HP}-T_{min}}{T_{min}} where S_{min}(S_{HP}) and T_{min}(T_{HP}) are the minimal (HP phase transition) entropy and temperature, respectively, below which no black hole can exist. For a large class of four dimensional non-rotating black holes, we…
We consider the Hawking-Page phase transition between the BTZ black hole of $M \ge 0$ and the thermal soliton of $M=-1$. In this system, there exists a mass gap so that there does not seem to exist a continuous thermodynamic phase transition. We consistently construct the off-shell free energies of the black hole and the soliton by properly taking into account the conical space. And then, the continuous off-shell free energy to describe tunneling effect can be realized through non-equilibrium solitons.
We show that the confinement-deconfinement phase transition of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with 16 supercharges in various dimensions can be realized through the Hawking-Page phase transition between the near horizon geometries of black Dp-branes and BPS Dp-branes by removing a small radius region in the geometry in order to realize a confinement phase, which generalizes the Herzog's discussion for the holographic hard-wall AdS/QCD model. Removing a small radius region in the gravitational dual corresponds to introducing an IR cutoff in the dual field theory. We also discuss the Hawking…
We investigate continuous Hawking-Page transitions in Einstein's gravity coupled to a scalar field with an arbitrary potential in the weak gravity limit. We show that this is only possible in a singular limit where the black-hole horizon marginally traps a curvature singularity. Depending on the subleading terms in the potential, a rich variety of continuous phase transitions arise. Our examples include second and higher order, including the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. In the case when the scalar is dilaton, the condition for a continuous phase transition lead to (asymptotically) lin…
Using the Bragg-Williams construction of an off-shell free energy we compute the topological charge of the Hawking-Page transition point for black holes in AdS. A computation following from a related off-shell effective potential in the boundary gauge dual matches the value of topological charge obtained in the bulk. We also compute the topological charges of the equilibrium phases of these systems, which follow from the saddle points of the appropriate free energy. The locally stable and unstable phases turn out to have topological charges opposite to each other, with the total being zero, in…
The black hole firewall conjecture is based on Page curve hypothesis, which claims that entanglement between black hole and Hawking radiation is almost maximum. The hypothesis is inspired by Lubkin-Lloyd-Pagels-Page theorem for degenerate systems with zero Hamiltonian. Adopting canonical typicality for nondegenerate systems with nonvanishing Hamiltonians, the entanglement becomes nonmaximal, and energetic singularities (firewalls) do not emerge for general systems. For static thermal pure states of black hole and Hawking radiation, entanglement entropy equals thermal entropy of the smaller syst…
We propose a model with multiple qubits that reproduces the thermal properties of 4-dimensional (4-dim) Schwarzschild black holes (BHs) by simultaneously taking account of the emission of Hawking particles and the zero-energy soft hair evaporation at horizon. The results verify that the entanglement entropy between a qubit and other subsystems, including emitted radiation, is much larger than the BH entropy analogue of the qubit, as opposed to the Page curve prediction. Our result suggests that early Hawking radiation is entangled with soft hair, and that late Hawking radiation can be highly e…
A sufficiently large Schwarzschild AdS black hole with the Hawking temperature has a positive heat capacity and undergoes the Hawking-Page phase transition. Even though an arbitrary isothermal surface of a cavity is introduced, the essential features about the stability and phase transition of the Schwarzschild AdS black hole remain the same. In this paper, we study the stability and the Hawking-Page phase transition of the Schwarzschild AdS black hole by employing an alternative local temperature satisfying the Hartle-Hawking vacuum condition which states that the ingoing and outgoing fluxes …
We obtain microstates accounting for the Gibbons-Hawking entropy in $dS_3$, along with a subleading logarithmic correction, from the solvable $T\bar T+Λ_2$ deformation of a seed CFT with sparse light spectrum. The microstates arise as the dressed CFT states near dimension $Δ=c/6$, associated with the Hawking-Page transition; they dominate the real spectrum of the deformed theory. We exhibit an analogue of the Hawking-Page transition in de Sitter. Appropriate generalizations of the $T\bar T+Λ_2$ deformation are required to treat model-dependent local bulk physics (subleading at large central ch…
It is well-known that there exists a Hawking-Page phase transition between a spherical AdS black hole and a thermal AdS space. The phase transition does not happen between a Ricci flat AdS black hole whose horizon is a Ricci flat space and a thermal AdS space in the Poincare coordinates. However, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between a Ricci flat AdS black hole and an AdS soliton if at least one of horizon coordinates for the Ricci flat black hole is compact. We show a similar phase transition betwen the Ricci flat black holes and deformed AdS solitons in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity an…
In this paper we study the phases of a Schwarzschild black hole in the Anti deSitter background geometry. Exploiting fluid/gravity duality we construct the Maxwell equal area isotherm T=T* in the temperature-entropy plane, in order to eliminate negative heat capacity black hole configurations. The construction we present here is reminiscent of the isobar cut in the pressure-volume plane which eliminates un-physical part of the Van der Walls curves below the critical temperature. Our construction also modifies the Hawking-Page phase transition. Stable black holes are formed at the temperature T…
We consider a gravity theory coupled to matter, where the matter has a higher-dimensional holographic dual. In such a theory, finding quantum extremal surfaces becomes equivalent to finding the RT/HRT surfaces in the higher-dimensional theory. Using this we compute the entropy of Hawking radiation and argue that it follows the Page curve, as suggested by recent computations of the entropy and entanglement wedges for old black holes. The higher-dimensional geometry connects the radiation to the black hole interior in the spirit of ER=EPR. The black hole interior then becomes part of the entangl…
We study the supergravity dual to the confinement/deconfinement phase transition for the N=4 SU(N) SYM on R x S^3 with a chemical potential conjugate to a U(1)\subset SO(6)_R charge. The appropriate supergravity system is a single charge black hole in D=5 N=8 gauged supergravity. Application of the gauge/string theory holographic renormalization approach leads to new expressions for the black hole ADM mass and its generalized free energy. We comment on the relation of this phase transition to the Hagedorn transition for strings in the maximally supersymmetric plane wave background with null RR…
Sign and magnitude of Ruppeiner's curvature $R_N$ is an empirical indicator of the respective nature and strength of microstructures of a thermodynamic system. For d-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes in AdS, $R_N$ at the Hawking-Page (HP) transition point is a universal constant. In this article we study the nature of $R_N$ at HP transition in a massive gravity theory and show that its constancy is broken due to the dependence on graviton mass as well as horizon topology. Although, when the graviton mass reaches a critical value the HP transition is driven to zero temperature, and $R_N$ at…
The interplay between a dS black hole and cosmological horizons introduces distinctive thermodynamic behavior in a dS spacetime (for example the well-known upper bounds of mass and entropy in Class. Quant. Grav. 37 (2020) 5). Based on this point, we present the Hawking-Page (HP) phase transition of the four-dimensional dS spacetime with non-linear charge correction when the effective pressure is fixed, and analyze the effects of different effective pressures and non-linear charge corrections on HP phase transition. The evolution of this dS spacetime undergoing the HP phase transition is also i…
Following the recent observation that the Ricci flow and the infinite distance swampland conjecture are closely related to each other, we will investigate in this paper geometric flow equations for AdS space-time geometries. First, we consider the so called Yamabe and Ricci-Bourguignon flows and we show that these two flows - in contrast to the Ricci flow - lead to infinite distance fixed points for product spaces like $AdS_d\times S^p$, where $AdS_d$ denotes d-dimensional AdS space and $S^p$ corresponds to a p-dimensional sphere. Second, we consider black hole geometries in AdS space time geo…
We reformulate recent insights into black hole information in a manner emphasizing operationally-defined notions of entropy, Lorentz-signature descriptions, and asymptotically flat spacetimes. With the help of replica wormholes, we find that experiments of asymptotic observers are consistent with black holes as unitary quantum systems, with density of states given by the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. However, this comes at the cost of superselection sectors associated with the state of baby universes. Spacetimes studied by Polchinski and Strominger in 1994 provide a simple illustration of the as…
In this paper, we study the von Neumann entropy of Hawking radiation $S_{\rm R}$ for a $d+2$-dimensional Hyperscaling Violating (HV) black brane which is coupled to two Minkowski spacetimes as the thermal baths. We consider two different situations for the matter fields: First, the matter fields are described by a $CFT_{d+2}$ whose central charge $c$ is very large. Second, they are described by a d+2 dimensional HV QFT which has a holographic gravitational theory that is a HV geometry at zero temperature. For both cases, we calculate the Page curve of the Hawking radiation as well as the Page …
Recent work has shown that coupling two identical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models can realize a phase of matter that is holographically dual to an eternal traversable wormhole. This phase supports revival oscillations between two quantum chaotic systems that can be interpreted as information traversing the wormhole. Here we generalize these ideas to a pair of coupled SYK models with complex fermions that respect a global U(1) charge symmetry. Such models show richer behavior than conventional SYK models with Majorana fermions and may be easier to realize experimentally. We consider two differen…
We study the Page curve in the four dimensional asymptotically flat eternal Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger dilaton black holes by applying the "quantum extremal surface" prescription. The results demonstrate that without island, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation is proportional to time and divergent at late times. While taking account of the emergence of the island extending slightly outside the event horizon, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation stops growing and eventually reaches a saturation value, which is twice of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and consistent with the…
The conservation of information of evaporating black holes is a very natural consequence of unitarity which is the fundamental symmetry of quantum mechanics. In order to study the conservation of information, we need to understand the nature of the entanglement entropy. The entropy of Hawking radiation is approximately equal to the maximum of entanglement entropy if a black hole is in a state before the Page time, i.e., when the entropy of Hawking radiation is smaller than the entropy of the black hole. However, if there exists a process generating smaller entanglements rather than maximal ent…
We investigate the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition and the second-order phase transition of the AdS black hole. It is shown that the thermodynamic curvature has the same behavior in these two different phase transitions. Specifically, the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition is the power function of the Hawking-Page phase transition temperature with exponent related to the spacetime dimension, or is invariably proportional to the reciprocal of the Hawking-Page phase transition entropy. For the thermodynamic curvature in the second-order phas…
We discuss an ambiguity of the derivation of the Hawking radiation through the gravitational anomaly method and propose modifications of this method such that it reproduces the correct thermal fluxes. In this modified gravitational anomaly method, we employ the two-dimensional conformal field theory technique.
We study the process of relaxation back to thermal equilibrium in $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory at finite temperature. When the size of the system is much larger than the inverse temperature, perturbations decay exponentially with time. On the other hand, when the inverse temperature is large, the relaxation is oscillatory with characteristic period set by the size of the system. We then analyse the intermediate regime in two specific models, namely free fermions, and a strongly coupled large $\tt k$ conformal field theory which is dual to string theory on $(2+1)$-dimensional anti…
We revisit the confinement/deconfinement transition in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and its relation to the Hawking-Page transition in gravity. Recently there has been substantial progress on counting the microstates of 1/16-BPS extremal black holes. However, there is presently a mismatch between the Hawking-Page transition and its avatar in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. This led to speculations about the existence of new gravitational saddles that would resolve the mismatch. Here we exhibit a phenomenon in complex matrix models which we call "delayed deconfinement". It turns out that …
We apply the recently proposed quantum extremal surface construction to calculate the Page curve of the eternal Reissner-Nordström black holes in four dimensions ignoring the backreaction and the greybody factor. Without the island, the entropy of Hawking radiation grows linearly with time, which results in the information paradox for the eternal black holes. By extremizing the generalized entropy that allows the contributions from the island, we find that the island extends to the outside the horizon of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. When taking the effect of the islands into account, it …
Thermodynamics of rotating black holes described by the Rényi formula as equilibrium and zeroth law compatible entropy function is investigated. We show that similarly to the standard Boltzmann approach, isolated Kerr black holes are stable with respect to axisymmetric perturbations in the Rényi model. On the other hand, when the black holes are surrounded by a bath of thermal radiation, slowly rotating black holes can also be in stable equilibrium with the heat bath at a fixed temperature, in contrast to the Boltzmann description. For the question of possible phase transitions in the system, …
We propose a top down construction for Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity using compactification of $ D=5 $ gravity theories in the presence of Abelian ($ U(1) $) as well as $ SU(2) $ Yang-Mills (YM) fields. The background solutions corresponding to $ D=2 $ model have been obtained in the perturbative regime of the theory where the corrections have been estimated over the uncharged JT solutions while treating the gauge couplings as the parameters of the expansion. Our analysis reveals the existence of two classes of solutions namely, (i) the \emph{interpolating} vacuum solution with AdS$_2$ in the…
We study the problem of a Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter black hole in a noncommutative geometry framework, thought to be an effective description of quantum-gravitational spacetime. As a first step we derive the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter solution. After studying the horizon structure, we find that the curvature singularity is smeared out by the noncommutative fluctuations. On the thermodynamics side, we show that the black hole temperature, instead of a divergent behavior at small scales, admits a maximum value. This fact implies an extension of the Hawking-Pag…
We investigate an entangled system, which is analogous to a composite system of a black hole and Hawking radiation. If Hawking radiation is well approximated by an outgoing particle generated from pair creation around the black hole, such a pair creation increases the total number of states. There should be a unitary mechanism to reduce the number of states inside the horizon for black hole evaporation. Because the infalling antiparticle has negative energy, as long as the infalling antiparticle finds its partner such that the two particles form a separable state, one can trace out such a zero…
We construct holographic backgrounds that are dual by the AdS/CFT correspondence to Euclidean conformal field theories on products of spheres $S^{d_1}\times S^{d_2}$, for conformal field theories whose dual may be approximated by classical Einstein gravity (typically these are large $N$ strongly coupled theories). For $d_2=1$ these backgrounds correspond to thermal field theories on $S^{d_1}$, and Hawking and Page found that there are several possible bulk solutions, with two different topologies, that compete with each other, leading to a phase transition as the relative size of the spheres i…
We discuss relevant scalar deformations of a holographic theory with a compact boundary. An example of such a theory would be the global AdS$_4$ with its spatially compact boundary $S^2$. To introduce a relevant deformation, we choose to turn on a time-independent and spatially homogeneous non-normalizable scalar operator with $m^2 = -2$. The finite size of a compact boundary cuts down the RG flow at a finite length scale leading to an incomplete RG flow to IR. We discuss a version of {\it incomplete} C-theorem and an {\it incomplete} attractor like mechanism. We discuss the implication of our…
