Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium but are notoriously difficult to study through observation. Making use of the advances in our understanding of MHD turbulence and turbulent reconnection, the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) was suggested and successfully applied to study magnetic fields utilizing spectroscopic data. Applying the tools developed for VGT to intensity statistics, we introduce the Intensity Gradients Technique (IGT) as a complementary tool that can be used synergistically with VGT. In this paper, we apply IGT to a diffuse HI region selected from the GALFA-HI survey and compare the intensity gradient maps with those obtained using velocity gradients as well as Planck polarization measurements. We demonstrate the possibility of using IGT and VGT for both studying the magnetic field and identifying shocks in the diffuse interstellar medium. We also explore the ability of IGT in locating self-gravitating regions and calculating Alfvenic Mach number, both alone and in combination with VGT and polarimetry. We compare IGT with the Histogram of Relative Orientation (HRO), which utilizes intensity gradients to characterize the relative orientation of column density structures and local magnetic fields.
The Velocity Gradients Technique (VGT) and the Probability Density Functions (PDFs) of mass density are tools to study turbulence, magnetic fields, and self-gravity in molecular clouds. However, self-absorption can significantly make the observed intensity different from the column density structures. In this work, we study the effects of self-absorption on the VGT and the intensity PDFs utilizing three synthetic emission lines of CO isotopologs $^{12}$CO (1-0), $^{13}$CO (1-0), and C$^{18}$O (1-0). We confirm that the performance of VGT is insensitive to the radiative transfer effect. We nume…
We present stacking polarized intensity as a means to study the polarization of sources that are too faint to be detected individually in surveys of polarized radio sources. Stacking offers not only high sensitivity to the median signal of a class of radio sources, but also avoids a detection threshold in polarized intensity, and therefore an arbitrary exclusion of source with a low percentage of polarization. Correction for polarization bias is done through a Monte Carlo analysis and tested on a simulated survey. We show that the non-linear relation between the real polarized signal and the d…
Based on statistical analysis of synchrotron polarization intensity, we study the anisotropic properties of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The second-order normalized structure function, quadrupole ratio modulus and anisotropic coefficient are synergistically used to characterize the anisotropy of the polarization intensity. On the basis of pre-decomposition data cubes, we first explore the anisotropy of the polarization intensity in different turbulence regimes and find that the most significant anisotropy occurs in the sub-Alfvénic regime. Using post-decomposition data cu…
We present 5321 milliarcsecond-resolution total intensity and linear polarization maps of 437 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) obtained with the VLBA at 15 GHz as part of the MOJAVE survey, and also from the NRAO data archive. The former is a long-term program to study the structure and evolution of powerful parsec-scale outflows associated with AGNs. The targeted AGNs are drawn from several flux-limited radio and gamma-ray samples, and all have correlated VLBA flux densities greater than about 50 mJy at 15 GHz. Approximately 80% of these AGNs are associated with gamma-ray sources detected by the…
Observations of synchrotron polarization at multiple frequencies in the presence of Faraday rotation can provide a way to reconstruct the 3D magnetic field distribution. In this paper we compare the well known Faraday Tomography (FT, Burn 1966) technique to the new approach named Synchrotron Polarization Gradients (SPG, Lazarian & Yuen 2018b). We compare the strengths and limitations of the two techniques, and describe their synergy. In particular, we show that in the situations when FT technique fails, e.g. due to insufficient frequency coverage, the SPG can still trace the 3D structure of ma…
We report on the continuum and polarization observations of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) conducted by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). FAST observations provide high angular resolution and high sensitivity images of the SNR, which will help to disentangle its nature. We obtained Stokes I, Q and U maps over the frequency range of 1.03 - 1.46 GHz split into channels of 7.63 kHz. The original angular resolution is in the range of ~3 arcmin - ~3.8 arcmin, and we combined all the data at a common resolution of 4 arcmin. The temperature scale of the total …
With the increasing number of experiments dedicated to the observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background, interest on the detailed properties of the foreground Galactic emission has risen. In particular the focus is shifting towards polarized microwave emission with the goal of detecting signature from primordial gravitational waves and inflation. This review describes the Galactic polarized and unpolarized emissions in the microwave range : free-free, synchrotron, thermal dust and anomalous emission.
We present a formalism that incorporates hydrogen Lyman-alpha (Ly$α$) polarization arising from the scattering of radiation in galaxy halos into the intensity mapping approach. Using the halo model, and emission profiles based on simulations and observations, we calculate auto and cross power spectra at redshifts $3\leq z \leq13$ for the Ly$α$ total intensity, $I$, polarized intensity, $P$, degree of polarization, $Π=P/I$, and two new quantities, the astrophysical $E$ and $B$ modes of Ly$α$ polarization. The one-halo terms of the $Π$ power spectra show a turnover that signals the average exten…

We present total-intensity and polarized-intensity images of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) observed by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The high angular-resolution and high-sensitivity images enable us to thoroughly compare the properties of the northern part with the southern part of the SNR. The central filament in the northern part and the southern part have a similar foreground rotation measure, meaning their distances are likely similar. The polarization analysis indicates that the random magnetic field is larger than the regular field in the nor…
The dust properties inferred from the analysis of Planck observations in total and polarized emission challenge current dust models. We propose new dust models compatible with polarized and unpolarized data in extinction and emission for translucent lines of sight ($0.5 < A_V < 2.5$). We amended the DustEM tool to model polarized extinction and emission. We fit the spectral dependence of the mean extinction, polarized extinction, SED and polarized SED with PAHs, astrosilicates and amorphous carbon (a-C). The astrosilicate population is aligned along the magnetic field lines, while the a-C popu…
We present new intensity and polarization observations of the Taurus molecular cloud (TMC) region in the frequency range 10-20 GHz with the Multi-Frequency Instrument (MFI) mounted on the first telescope of the QUIJOTE experiment. From the combination of the QUIJOTE data with the WMAP 9-yr data release, the Planck second data release, the DIRBE maps and ancillary data, we detect an anomalous microwave emission (AME) component with flux density $S_{\rm AME, peak} = 43.0 \pm 7.9\,$Jy in the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) and $S_{\rm AME, peak} = 10.7 \pm 2.7\,$Jy in the dark cloud nebula L1527, wh…
We study the standard spectral line radiative transfer equation for media consisting of resonant atoms and non-resonant components (the dust grains and the atoms without considered spectral transition). Our goal is to study the intensity and polarization of the resonance radiation emerging from semi-infinite atmosphere. Using the known technique of resolvent matrices, we obtain the exact solution of vectorial radiative transfer equation for various sources of non-polarized radiation in semi-infinite atmosphere. Homogeneous, linear increasing and exponentially decreasing sources are considered.…
We present arcminute-resolution intensity and polarization maps of the Galactic center made with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The maps cover a 32 deg$^2$ field at 98, 150, and 224 GHz with $\vert l\vert\le4^\circ$, $\vert b\vert\le2^\circ$. We combine these data with Planck observations at similar frequencies to create coadded maps with increased sensitivity at large angular scales. With the coadded maps, we are able to resolve many known features of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in both total intensity and polarization. We map the orientation of the plane-of-sky component of the …
Angular power spectra computed from Planck HFI 353 GHz intensity and polarization maps produce a TB correlation that can be approximated by a power law. Whether the observed TB correlation is an induced systematic feature or a physical property of Galactic dust emission is of interest both for cosmological and Galactic studies. We investigate the large angular scale E- and B-mode morphology of microwave polarized thermal dust emission, and relate it to physical quantities of polarization angle and polarization fraction. We use empirical models of polarized dust to show that dust polarization a…
Anomalous microwave emission (AME) has been observed in numerous sky regions, in the frequency range ~10-60 GHz. One of the most scrutinized regions is G159.6-18.5, located within the Perseus molecular complex. In this paper we present further observations of this region (194 hours in total over ~250 deg^2), both in intensity and in polarization. They span four frequency channels between 10 and 20 GHz, and were gathered with QUIJOTE, a new CMB experiment with the goal of measuring the polarization of the CMB and Galactic foregrounds. When combined with other publicly-available intensity data, …
A fully analytic statistical formalism does not yet exist to describe radio-wavelength measurements of linearly polarized intensity that are produced using rotation measure synthesis. In this work we extend the analytic formalism for standard linear polarization, namely that describing measurements of the quadrature sum of Stokes Q and U intensities, to the rotation measure synthesis environment. We derive the probability density function and expectation value for Faraday-space polarization measurements for both the case where true underlying polarized emission is present within unresolved Far…
We present BLOBCAT, new source extraction software that utilises the flood fill algorithm to detect and catalogue blobs, or islands of pixels representing sources, in two-dimensional astronomical images. The software is designed to process radio-wavelength images of both Stokes I intensity and linear polarization, the latter formed through the quadrature sum of Stokes Q and U intensities or as a byproduct of rotation measure synthesis. We discuss an objective, automated method by which estimates of position-dependent background root-mean-square noise may be obtained and incorporated into BLOBC…
An understanding of cosmic magnetism requires converting the polarization properties of extragalactic radio sources into the rest-frame in which the corresponding polarized emission or Faraday rotation is produced. Motivated by this requirement, we present a catalog of multiwavelength linear polarization and total intensity radio data for polarized sources from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). We cross-match these sources with a number of complementary measurements -- combining data from major radio polarization and total intensity surveys such as AT20G, B3-VLA, GB6, NORTH6CM, Texas, and WENSS,…
(Abridged) We have conducted a total intensity and polarization survey of the Galactic plane at 6 cm using the Urumqi 25 m telescope for the Galactic longitude range of 10 deg<l<60 deg and the Galactic latitude range of |b|<5 deg. Missing absolute zero levels of Stokes U and Q maps were restored by extrapolating the WMAP five-year K-band polarization data. For total intensities we recovered missing large-scale components by referring to the Effelsberg 11 cm survey. Total intensity and polarization maps are presented with an angular resolution of 9.5 arcmin and a sensitivity of 1 mK and 0.5 mK …
On the basis of the modern understanding of MHD turbulence, we propose a new way of using synchrotron radiation, namely using synchrotron intensity gradients for tracing astrophysical magnetic fields. We successfully test the new technique using synthetic data obtained with the 3D MHD simulations and provide the demonstration of the practical utility of the technique by comparing the directions of magnetic field that are obtained with PLANCK synchrotron intensity dats to the directions obtained with PLANCK synchrotron polarization data. We demonstrate that the synchrotron intensity gradients (…
Planck has mapped the intensity and polarization of the sky at microwave frequencies with unprecedented sensitivity. We make use of the Planck 353 GHz I, Q, and U Stokes maps as dust templates, and cross-correlate them with the Planck and WMAP data at 12 frequencies from 23 to 353 GHz, over circular patches with 10 degree radius. The cross-correlation analysis is performed for both intensity and polarization data in a consistent manner. We use a mask that focuses our analysis on the diffuse interstellar medium at intermediate Galactic latitudes. We determine the spectral indices of dust emissi…
We study oscillations of accretion torus with azimuthal magnetic field. For several lowest-order modes we calculate eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions and calculate corresponding intensity and polarization light curves using advanced ray-tracing methods.
Dust polarization orientations in molecular clouds often tend to be close to tangential to the Stokes $I$ dust continuum emission contours. The magnetic field and the emission gradient orientations, therefore, show some correlation. A method is proposed, which -- in the framework of ideal magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) -- connects the measured angle between magnetic field and emission gradient orientations to the total field strength. The approach is based on the assumption that a change in emission intensity (gradient) is a measure for the resulting direction of motion in the MHD force equation.…
Due to the inevitable accumulation of the observed information in the direction of the line of sight, it is difficult to measure the local magnetic field of MHD turbulence. However, the correct understanding of the local magnetic field is a prerequisite for reconstructing the Galactic 3D magnetic field. We study how to reveal the local magnetic field direction and the eddy anisotropy on the basis of the statistics of synchrotron polarization derivative with respect to the squared wavelength $dP/dλ^2$. In the low frequency and strong Faraday rotation regime, we implement numerical simulations i…
We present QUIJOTE intensity and polarization maps in four frequency bands centred around 11, 13, 17 and 19GHz, and covering approximately 29000 deg$^2$, including most of the Northern sky region. These maps result from 9000 h of observations taken between May 2013 and June 2018 with the first QUIJOTE instrument (MFI), and have angular resolutions of around $1^\circ$, and sensitivities in polarization within the range 35-40 $μ$K per 1-degree beam, being a factor $\sim 2$-$4$ worse in intensity. We discuss the data processing pipeline employed, and the basic characteristics of the maps in terms…
Fluorescence emission lines are broadly applied in observation for diffuse medium in the universe. They are normally observed around strong pumping source, tracing the gas in circumstellar medium, reflection nebula, and H\,{\sc ii} regions, etc. They reside in UV/optical and infrared bands and hence could be directly observed with ground-base telescopes. In this letter, we demonstrate the polarization of fluorescence lines as a magnetic field tracer arising from ground state atomic alignment in diffuse medium, including our solar system, supernova remnants (SNRs), as well as quasi-stellar obje…
We present high sensitivity ($σ_P \simeq 0.6\,$mJy) polarimetric observations in seven bands, from $2.1$ to $38\,$GHz, of a complete sample of $104$ compact extragalactic radio sources brighter than $200\,$mJy at $20\,$GHz. Polarization measurements in six bands, in the range $5.5-38\,$GHz, for $53$ of these objects were reported by \citet{Galluzzi2017}. We have added new measurements in the same six bands for another 51 sources and measurements at $2.1\,$GHz for the full sample of $104$ sources. Also, the previous measurements at $18$, $24$, $33$ and $38\,$GHz were re-calibrated using the upd…
Pulsar-timing arrays (PTAs) are in the near future expected to detect a stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) produced by a population of inspiralling super-massive black hole binaries. In this work, we consider a background that can be anisotropic and circularly polarized. We use the expansion of the intensity and the circular polarization in terms of spherical harmonics and the overlap reduction functions for each term in this expansion. We propose an unbiased real-space estimator that can separate the intensity and circular-polarization contributions of the SGWB to pulsar-timing-r…
We present the polarization observations toward the circumstellar disk around HD 142527 by using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at the frequency of 343 GHz. The beam size is $0.51 " \times 0.44 "$, which corresponds to the spatial resolution of $\sim$ 71 $\times$ 62 AU. The polarized intensity displays a ring-like structure with a peak located on the east side with a polarization fraction of $P= 3.26 \pm 0.02$ %, which is different from the peak of the continuum emission from the northeast region. The polarized intensity is significantly weaker at the peak of the continuum…
