We present a formalism that incorporates hydrogen Lyman-alpha (Ly$α$) polarization arising from the scattering of radiation in galaxy halos into the intensity mapping approach. Using the halo model, and emission profiles based on simulations and observations, we calculate auto and cross power spectra at redshifts $3\leq z \leq13$ for the Ly$α$ total intensity, $I$, polarized intensity, $P$, degree of polarization, $Π=P/I$, and two new quantities, the astrophysical $E$ and $B$ modes of Ly$α$ polarization. The one-halo terms of the $Π$ power spectra show a turnover that signals the average extent of the polarization signal, and thus the extent of the scattering medium. The position of this feature depends on redshift, and on the specific emission profile shape and extent, in our formalism. Therefore, the comparison of various Ly$α$ polarization quantities and redshifts can break degeneracies between competing effects, and it can reveal the true shape of the emission profiles, and thus, the physical properties of the cool gas in halos. Furthermore, measurements of Ly$α$ $E$ and $B$ modes may be used as probes of galaxy evolution, because they are related to the average degree of anisotropy in the emission and in the halo gas distribution across redshifts. The detection of the polarization signal at $z \sim 3-5$ requires improvements in the sensitivity of current ground-based experiments by a factor of $\sim 10$, and of $\sim 100$ for space-based instruments targeting the redshifts $z\sim 9-10$, the exact values depending on the specific redshift and experiment. Interloper contamination in polarization is expected to be small, because the interlopers need to also be polarized. Overall, Ly$α$ polarization boosts the amount of physical information retrievable on galaxies and their surroundings, most of it not achievable with total emission alone. (abridged)
Lyman-$α$ nebulae are usually found in massive environments at high redshift ($z > 2$). The origin of their Lyman-$α$ (Lya) emission remains debated. Recent polarimetric observations showed that at least some Lya sources are polarized. This is often interpreted as a proof that the photons are centrally produced, and opposed to the scenario in which the Lya emission is the cooling radiation emitted by gas heated during the accretion onto the halo. We suggest that this scenario is not incompatible with the polarimetric observations. In order to test this idea, we post-process a radiative hydrody…
We investigate the large-scale structure of Lyman-alpha emission intensity in the Universe at redshifts z=2-3.5 using cross-correlation techniques. Our Lya emission samples are spectra of BOSS Luminous Red Galaxies from Data Release 12 with the best fit model galaxies subtracted. We cross-correlate the residual flux in these spectra with BOSS quasars, and detect a positive signal on scales 1-15 Mpc/h. We identify and remove a source of contamination not previously accounted for, due to the effects of quasar clustering on cross-fibre light. Corrected, our quasar-Lya emission cross-correlation i…
We present the first simulations of the high-redshift Ly$α$ intensity field that account for scattering in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Using a 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, we find that Ly$α$ scattering smooths spatial fluctuations in the Ly$α$ intensity on small scales and that the spatial dependence of this smoothing depends strongly on the mean neutral fraction of the IGM. Our simulations find a strong effect of reionization on $k=0.1-1~{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$, with $P_{\rm Lyα}\propto k^{-1.75}$ for $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.63$ and $P_{\rm Lyα} \propto k^{-2.2}$ for $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = …
We investigate the cross-correlation between the spatial distribution of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and the 21cm intensity mapping signal at $z\sim[3-5]$. At these redshifts, galactic feedback is supposed to only marginally affect the matter power spectrum, and the neutral hydrogen distribution is independently constrained by quasar spectra. Using a high resolution N-body simulation, populated with neutral hydrogen a posteriori, we forecast for the expected LBG-21cm cross-spectrum and its error for a 21cm field observed by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA1-LOW and SKA1-MID), combined with a sp…
Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16, we have detected the large-scale structure of Ly$α$ emission in the Universe at redshifts $z = 2$--3.5 by cross-correlating quasar positions and Ly$α$ emission imprinted in the residual spectra of luminous red galaxies. We apply an analytical model to fit the corresponding Ly$α$ surface brightness profile and multipoles of the redshift-space quasar-Ly$α$ emission cross-correlation function. The model suggests an average cosmic Ly$α$ luminosity density of ${6.6_{-3.1}^{+3.3}}\times 10^{40} {\rm erg\, s^{-1} cMpc^{-3}}$, a $\sim 2σ$ detectio…
We have studied ultraviolet images of 40 Green Pea galaxies and 15 local Lyman Break Galaxy Analogs to understand the relation between Ly$α$ photon escape and central UV photometric properties. We measured star formation intensity (SFI, star formation rate per unit area) from the central 250 pc region ($S_{\rm 250pc}$) using COS/NUV images from the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope}. The measured $S_{\rm 250pc}$ of our sample Green Peas ranges from 2.3--46 $M_{\odot} \ \rm{year}^{-1} \ \rm{kpc^{-2}}$, with a geometric mean of $15 M_{\odot} \ \rm{year}^{-1} \ \rm{kpc^{-2}}$ and a standard deviatio…
With the increasing number of experiments dedicated to the observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background, interest on the detailed properties of the foreground Galactic emission has risen. In particular the focus is shifting towards polarized microwave emission with the goal of detecting signature from primordial gravitational waves and inflation. This review describes the Galactic polarized and unpolarized emissions in the microwave range : free-free, synchrotron, thermal dust and anomalous emission.
(Abridged) We detect the large-scale structure of Lya emission in the Universe at redshifts z=2-3.5 by measuring the cross-correlation of Lya surface brightness with quasars in SDSS/BOSS. We use a million spectra targeting Luminous Red Galaxies at z<0.8, after subtracting a best fit model galaxy spectrum from each one, as an estimate of the high-redshift Lya surface brightness. The quasar-Lya emission cross-correlation we detect has a shape consistent with a LambdaCDM model with Omega_M =0.30^+0.10-0.07. The predicted amplitude of this cross-correlation is proportional to the product of the me…
Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) are a promising probe of the large-scale structure at high redshift, $z\gtrsim 2$. In particular, the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment aims at observing LAEs at 1.9 $<z<$ 3.5 to measure the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale and the Redshift-Space Distortion (RSD). However, Zheng et al. (2011) pointed out that the complicated radiative transfer (RT) of the resonant Lyman-$α$ emission line generates an anisotropic selection bias in the LAE clustering on large scales, $s\gtrsim 10$ Mpc. This effect could potentially induce a systematic error in the BAO…
We present arcminute-resolution intensity and polarization maps of the Galactic center made with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The maps cover a 32 deg$^2$ field at 98, 150, and 224 GHz with $\vert l\vert\le4^\circ$, $\vert b\vert\le2^\circ$. We combine these data with Planck observations at similar frequencies to create coadded maps with increased sensitivity at large angular scales. With the coadded maps, we are able to resolve many known features of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in both total intensity and polarization. We map the orientation of the plane-of-sky component of the …
The intensity of the Cosmic UV background (UVB), coming from all sources of ionising photons such as star-forming galaxies and quasars, determines the thermal evolution and ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and is, therefore, a critical ingredient for models of cosmic structure formation. Most of the previous estimates are based on the comparison between observed and simulated Lyman-$α$ forest. We present the results of an independent method to constrain the product of the UVB photoionisation rate and the covering fraction of Lyman limit systems (LLSs) by searching for the flu…
Based on statistical analysis of synchrotron polarization intensity, we study the anisotropic properties of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The second-order normalized structure function, quadrupole ratio modulus and anisotropic coefficient are synergistically used to characterize the anisotropy of the polarization intensity. On the basis of pre-decomposition data cubes, we first explore the anisotropy of the polarization intensity in different turbulence regimes and find that the most significant anisotropy occurs in the sub-Alfvénic regime. Using post-decomposition data cu…
Angular power spectra computed from Planck HFI 353 GHz intensity and polarization maps produce a TB correlation that can be approximated by a power law. Whether the observed TB correlation is an induced systematic feature or a physical property of Galactic dust emission is of interest both for cosmological and Galactic studies. We investigate the large angular scale E- and B-mode morphology of microwave polarized thermal dust emission, and relate it to physical quantities of polarization angle and polarization fraction. We use empirical models of polarized dust to show that dust polarization a…
Anomalous microwave emission (AME) has been observed in numerous sky regions, in the frequency range ~10-60 GHz. One of the most scrutinized regions is G159.6-18.5, located within the Perseus molecular complex. In this paper we present further observations of this region (194 hours in total over ~250 deg^2), both in intensity and in polarization. They span four frequency channels between 10 and 20 GHz, and were gathered with QUIJOTE, a new CMB experiment with the goal of measuring the polarization of the CMB and Galactic foregrounds. When combined with other publicly-available intensity data, …
An understanding of cosmic magnetism requires converting the polarization properties of extragalactic radio sources into the rest-frame in which the corresponding polarized emission or Faraday rotation is produced. Motivated by this requirement, we present a catalog of multiwavelength linear polarization and total intensity radio data for polarized sources from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). We cross-match these sources with a number of complementary measurements -- combining data from major radio polarization and total intensity surveys such as AT20G, B3-VLA, GB6, NORTH6CM, Texas, and WENSS,…
We present stacking polarized intensity as a means to study the polarization of sources that are too faint to be detected individually in surveys of polarized radio sources. Stacking offers not only high sensitivity to the median signal of a class of radio sources, but also avoids a detection threshold in polarized intensity, and therefore an arbitrary exclusion of source with a low percentage of polarization. Correction for polarization bias is done through a Monte Carlo analysis and tested on a simulated survey. We show that the non-linear relation between the real polarized signal and the d…
A fully analytic statistical formalism does not yet exist to describe radio-wavelength measurements of linearly polarized intensity that are produced using rotation measure synthesis. In this work we extend the analytic formalism for standard linear polarization, namely that describing measurements of the quadrature sum of Stokes Q and U intensities, to the rotation measure synthesis environment. We derive the probability density function and expectation value for Faraday-space polarization measurements for both the case where true underlying polarized emission is present within unresolved Far…
We present BLOBCAT, new source extraction software that utilises the flood fill algorithm to detect and catalogue blobs, or islands of pixels representing sources, in two-dimensional astronomical images. The software is designed to process radio-wavelength images of both Stokes I intensity and linear polarization, the latter formed through the quadrature sum of Stokes Q and U intensities or as a byproduct of rotation measure synthesis. We discuss an objective, automated method by which estimates of position-dependent background root-mean-square noise may be obtained and incorporated into BLOBC…
Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium but are notoriously difficult to study through observation. Making use of the advances in our understanding of MHD turbulence and turbulent reconnection, the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) was suggested and successfully applied to study magnetic fields utilizing spectroscopic data. Applying the tools developed for VGT to intensity statistics, we introduce the Intensity Gradients Technique (IGT) as a complementary tool that can be used synergistically with VGT. In this paper, we apply IGT to a diffuse HI region selected from the GALFA…
Internal line shifts in quasars spectra have played a more prominent role in our understanding of quasar structure and dynamics. The observed different redshift among broad hydrogen lines is still an amazing puzzle in the study of quasars. We have argued that the broad hydrogen lines, as well as the low-ionization lines in quasars, are significantly contributed by the Cerenkov quasi-line emission of the fast electrons in the dense clouds/filaments/sheets ($N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{14}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$); whereas this line-like radiation mechanism is invalid for producing the high ionization lines. In or…
The Ly$α$ emission line is one of the main observables of galaxies at high redshift, but its output depends strongly on the neutral gas distribution and kinematics around the star-forming regions where UV photons are produced. We present observations of Ly$α$ and 21-cm HI emission at comparable scales with the goal to qualitatively investigate how the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) properties impact Ly$α$ transfer in galaxies. We have observed 21-cm HI at the highest angular resolution possible (~ 3" beam) with the VLA in two local galaxies from the Lyman Alpha Reference Sample. We contrast…
This review summarizes our current understanding of the outer heliosphere and local interstellar medium (LISM) inferred from observations and modeling of interplanetary Lyman-$α$ emission. The emission is produced by solar Lyman-alpha photons (121.567 nm) backscattered by interstellar H atoms inflowing to the heliosphere from the LISM. Studies of Lyman-alpha radiation determined the parameters of interstellar hydrogen within a few astronomical units from the Sun. The interstellar hydrogen atoms appeared to be decelerated, heated, and shifted compared to the helium atoms. The detected decelerat…

Lyman alpha halos are observed ubiquitously around star-forming galaxies at high redshift, but their origin is still a matter of debate. We demonstrate that the emission from faint unresolved satellite sources, $M_{\rm UV} \gtrsim -17$, clustered around the central galaxies may play a major role in generating spatially extended Ly$α$, continuum (${\rm UV + VIS}$) and H$α$ halos. We apply the analytic formalism developed in Mas-Ribas & Dijkstra (2016) to model the halos around Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) at $z=3.1$, for several different satellite clustering prescriptions. In general, our UV an…
We study the standard spectral line radiative transfer equation for media consisting of resonant atoms and non-resonant components (the dust grains and the atoms without considered spectral transition). Our goal is to study the intensity and polarization of the resonance radiation emerging from semi-infinite atmosphere. Using the known technique of resolvent matrices, we obtain the exact solution of vectorial radiative transfer equation for various sources of non-polarized radiation in semi-infinite atmosphere. Homogeneous, linear increasing and exponentially decreasing sources are considered.…
We present 5321 milliarcsecond-resolution total intensity and linear polarization maps of 437 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) obtained with the VLBA at 15 GHz as part of the MOJAVE survey, and also from the NRAO data archive. The former is a long-term program to study the structure and evolution of powerful parsec-scale outflows associated with AGNs. The targeted AGNs are drawn from several flux-limited radio and gamma-ray samples, and all have correlated VLBA flux densities greater than about 50 mJy at 15 GHz. Approximately 80% of these AGNs are associated with gamma-ray sources detected by the…
We use Hubble space telescope data of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies to investigate properties of Lyman-alpha (Ly$α$) halos, Ly$α$ morphology, and the star-forming characteristics of galaxies. We study how the morphology of Ly$α$ emission is related to other Ly$α$ observables. Furthermore, we study the interdependencies of Ly$α$ morphological quantities. We studied the spatial extent of Ly$α$ using surface brightness profiles in i) using circular apertures and ii) within faint Ly$α$ isophotes. We measured the average intensity and the size of the regions with a high star formation rate densit…
Protogalactic environments are typically identified using quasar absorption lines, and these galactic building blocks can manifest as Damped Lyman-Alpha Absorbers (DLAs) and Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs). We use radio observations of Faraday effects to test whether DLAs and LLSs host a magnetised medium, by combining DLA and LLS detections throughout the literature with 1.4 GHz polarization data from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). We obtain a control, a DLA, and a LLS sample consisting of 114, 19, and 27 lines-of-sight respectively - all of which are polarized at $\ge8σ$ to ensure Rician bias is…
We report on the continuum and polarization observations of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) conducted by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). FAST observations provide high angular resolution and high sensitivity images of the SNR, which will help to disentangle its nature. We obtained Stokes I, Q and U maps over the frequency range of 1.03 - 1.46 GHz split into channels of 7.63 kHz. The original angular resolution is in the range of ~3 arcmin - ~3.8 arcmin, and we combined all the data at a common resolution of 4 arcmin. The temperature scale of the total …
Our aim is to characterize the polarized continuum emission properties including intensity, polarization position angle, and polarization percentage of Sgr A* at $\sim$100 (3.0 mm), $\sim$230 (1.3 mm), $\sim$345 (0.87 mm), $\sim$500 (0.6 mm), and $\sim$700 GHz (0.43 mm). We report continuum emission properties of Sgr A* at the above frequency bands, based on the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We measured flux densities of Sgr A* from ALMA single pointing and mosaic observations. We performed sinusoidal fittings to the observed (XX-YY)/I intensity ratios, to derive the pola…
