The paper presents a feedforward plus feedback controller structure with I and PI controllers for control of an integrating process with dead time. Guidelines for controller gain selection based on time domain specifications of damping factor and natural frequency are provided along with simulations indicating the selectivity of process response. The utility of proposed controller structure is shown by simulating the depth control of a nonlinear autonomous underwater vehicle system by the proposed controller structure.
Due to the enormous technological improvements obtained in the last decades it is possible to use robotic vehicles for underwater exploration. This work describes the development of a dynamic positioning system for remotely operated underwater vehicles based. The adopted approach is developed using Lyapunov Stability Theory and enhanced by a neural network based algorithm for uncertainty and disturbance compensation. The performance of the proposed control scheme is evaluated by means of numerical simulations.
Underwater vehicles are employed in the exploration of dynamic environments where tuning of a specific controller for each task would be time-consuming and unreliable as the controller depends on calculated mathematical coefficients in idealised conditions. For such a case, learning task from experience can be a useful alternative. This paper explores the capability of probabilistic inference learning to control autonomous underwater vehicles that can be used for different tasks without re-programming the controller. Probabilistic inference learning uses a Gaussian process model of the real ve…

Control theory provides engineers with a multitude of tools to design controllers that manipulate the closed-loop behavior and stability of dynamical systems. These methods rely heavily on insights about the mathematical model governing the physical system. However, if a system is highly complex, it might be infeasible to produce a reliable mathematical model of the system. Without a model most of the theoretical tools to develop control laws break down. In these settings, machine learning controllers become attractive: Controllers that can learn and adapt to complex systems, developing contro…

This paper presents the formulation and results for a control-aware optimization of the combined geometric and structural design of an energy-harvesting underwater kite. Because kite-based energy-harvesting systems, both airborne and underwater, possess strong coupling between closed-loop flight control, geometric design, and structural design, consideration of all three facets of the design within a single co-design framework is highly desirable. However, while prior literature has addressed one or two attributes of the design at a time, the present work constitutes the first comprehensive ef…
The dead-zone is one of the most common hard nonlinearities in industrial actuators and its presence may drastically compromise control systems stability and performance. In this work, an adaptive variable structure controller is proposed to deal with a class of uncertain nonlinear systems subject to a non-symmetric dead-zone input. The adopted approach is primarily based on the sliding mode control methodology but enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to compensate the dead-zone. Using Lyapunov stability theory and Barbalat's lemma, the convergence properties of the closed-loop system are a…

This paper is concerned with the problem of stabilizing continuous-time linear time-invariant systems subject to quantization and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. In this context, two DoS-induced challenges emerge with the design of resilient encoding schemes, namely, the coupling between encoding strategies of different signals, and the synchronization between the encoder and decoder. To address these challenges, a novel structure that is equipped with a deadbeat controller as well as a delicate transmission protocol for the input and output channels, co-designed leveraging the controllabilit…
This paper proposes the trajectory tracking problem between an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a mobile surface ship, both equipped with optical communication transceivers. The challenging issue is to maintain stable connectivity between the two autonomous vehicles within an optical communication range. We define a directed optical line-of-sight (LoS) link between the two-vehicle systems. The transmitter is mounted on the AUV while the surface ship is equipped with an optical receiver. However, this optical communication channel needs to preserve a stable transmitter-receiver position …
This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) energy-optimal path-following control design for autonomous underwater vehicles subject to ocean currents. The proposed approach has a two-stage control architecture consisting of the setpoint computation and the setpoint tracking. In the first stage, the surge velocity, heave velocity, and pitch angle setpoints are optimized by minimizing the required vehicle propulsion energy under currents, and the line-of-sight (LOS) guidance law is used to generate the yaw angle setpoint that ensures path following. In the second stage, two model predictive con…
We present a numerical method to plot the root-locus of Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) dead-time systems on a given right half-plane up to a predefined controller gain. We compute the starting and intersection points of root-locus inside the region and we obtain the root-loci of each root based on a predictor-corrector type continuation method. The method is effective for high-order SISO dead-time systems.
This manuscript introduces a passivity-based control methodology for fully-actuated mechanical systems with symmetric or asymmetric dead-zones. To this end, we find a smooth approximation of the inverse of the function that describes such a nonlinearity. Then, we propose an energy and damping injection approach - based on the PI-PBC technique - that compensates for the dead-zone. Moreover, we provide an analysis of the performance of the proposed controller near the equilibrium. We conclude this paper by experimentally validating the results on a two degrees-of-freedom planar manipulator.
In this paper, formation tracking for a multi-AUV system (MAS) using an improved adaptive sliding mode control method is studied in the Three Dimensional (3-D) underwater environment. Firstly, the kinematics model and the dynamic model of the AUVs are given as the Six Dimensions of Freedom (6-DOF) considered. Then, control law based on the mathematical model of the AUVs is proposed based on the improved sliding mode method. A second order sliding mode control method is adopted to eliminate the chatting phenomenon of the controller. Thirdly, considering the water flow in the underwater working …
The dead-zone nonlinearity is frequently encountered in many industrial automation equipment and its presence can severely compromise control system performance. Due to the possibility to express human experience in an algorithmic manner, fuzzy logic has been largely employed in the last decades to both control and identification of uncertain dynamical systems. In spite of the simplicity of this heuristic approach, in some situations a more rigorous mathematical treatment of the problem is required. In this work, an adaptive fuzzy controller is proposed for nonlinear systems subject to dead-zo…

The developed vehicle is an open frame remotely operated vehicle (ROV) with a small footprint and a modular physical and electrical architecture. With a net weight of 1.6 kg, a maximum …
In marine operations underwater manipulators play a primordial role. However, due to uncertainties in the dynamic model and disturbances caused by the environment, low-level control methods require great capabilities to adapt to change. Furthermore, under position and torque constraints the requirements for the control system are greatly increased. Reinforcement learning is a data driven control technique that can learn complex control policies without the need of a model. The learning capabilities of these type of agents allow for great adaptability to changes in the operative conditions. In …
The aim of this paper is to propose a high performance control approach for trajectory tracking of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). However, the controller performance can be affected by the unknown perturbations including model uncertainties and external time-varying disturbances in an undersea environment. To address this problem, a Backstepping-based Integral Sliding Mode Control with Time Delay Estimation (BS-ISMC-TDE) is designed. To improve the performance of a conventional backstepping control algorithm, an Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) approach is adopted in the backsteppi…
We present a numerical method to plot the root locus of Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) dead-time systems with respect to the controller gain or the system delay. We compute the trajectories of characteristic roots of the closed-loop system on a prescribed complex right half-plane. We calculate the starting, branch and boundary crossing roots of root-locus branches inside the region. We compute the root locus of each characteristic root based on a predictor-corrector type continuation method. To avoid the high sensitivity of roots with respect to the locus parameter in the neighborhood of br…
Electrohydraulic servosystems are widely employed in industrial applications such as robotic manipulators, active suspensions, precision machine tools and aerospace systems. They provide many advantages over electric motors, including high force to weight ratio, fast response time and compact size. However, precise control of electrohydraulic actuated systems, due to their inherent nonlinear characteristics, cannot be easily obtained with conventional linear controllers. Most flow control valves can also exhibit some hard nonlinearities such as dead-zone due to valve spool overlap. This work d…
