Control theory provides engineers with a multitude of tools to design controllers that manipulate the closed-loop behavior and stability of dynamical systems. These methods rely heavily on insights about the mathematical model governing the physical system. However, if a system is highly complex, it might be infeasible to produce a reliable mathematical model of the system. Without a model most of the theoretical tools to develop control laws break down. In these settings, machine learning controllers become attractive: Controllers that can learn and adapt to complex systems, developing control laws where the engineer cannot. This article focuses on utilizing machine learning controllers in practical applications, specifically using deep reinforcement learning in motion control systems for an autonomous underwater vehicle with six degrees-of-freedom. Two methods are considered: end-to-end learning, where the vehicle is left entirely alone to explore the solution space in its search for an optimal policy, and PID assisted learning, where the DRL controller is essentially split into three separate parts, each controlling its own actuator.

The performance of the proposed control scheme is evaluated by means of numerical simulations.
The paper presents a feedforward plus feedback controller structure with I and PI controllers for control of an integrating process with dead time. Guidelines for controller gain selection based on time domain specifications of damping factor and natural frequency are provided along with simulations indicating the selectivity of process response. The utility of proposed controller structure is shown by simulating the depth control of a nonlinear autonomous underwater vehicle system by the proposed controller structure.

Underwater vehicles are employed in the exploration of dynamic environments where tuning of a specific controller for each task would be time-consuming and unreliable as the controller depends on calculated mathematical coefficients in idealised conditions. For such a case, learning task from experience can be a useful alternative. This paper explores the capability of probabilistic inference learning to control autonomous underwater vehicles that can be used for different tasks without re-programming the controller. Probabilistic inference learning uses a Gaussian process model of the real ve…
An Improved ESO-Based Line-of-Sight Guidance Law for Path Following of Underactuated Autonomous Underwater Helicopter With Nonlinear Tracking Differentiator and Anti-saturation Controller
This paper presents the formulation and results for a control-aware optimization of the combined geometric and structural design of an energy-harvesting underwater kite. Because kite-based energy-harvesting systems, both airborne and underwater, possess strong coupling between closed-loop flight control, geometric design, and structural design, consideration of all three facets of the design within a single co-design framework is highly desirable. However, while prior literature has addressed one or two attributes of the design at a time, the present work constitutes the first comprehensive ef…
In marine operations underwater manipulators play a primordial role. However, due to uncertainties in the dynamic model and disturbances caused by the environment, low-level control methods require great capabilities to adapt to change. Furthermore, under position and torque constraints the requirements for the control system are greatly increased. Reinforcement learning is a data driven control technique that can learn complex control policies without the need of a model. The learning capabilities of these type of agents allow for great adaptability to changes in the operative conditions. In …
This paper proposes the trajectory tracking problem between an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a mobile surface ship, both equipped with optical communication transceivers. The challenging issue is to maintain stable connectivity between the two autonomous vehicles within an optical communication range. We define a directed optical line-of-sight (LoS) link between the two-vehicle systems. The transmitter is mounted on the AUV while the surface ship is equipped with an optical receiver. However, this optical communication channel needs to preserve a stable transmitter-receiver position …
This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) energy-optimal path-following control design for autonomous underwater vehicles subject to ocean currents. The proposed approach has a two-stage control architecture consisting of the setpoint computation and the setpoint tracking. In the first stage, the surge velocity, heave velocity, and pitch angle setpoints are optimized by minimizing the required vehicle propulsion energy under currents, and the line-of-sight (LOS) guidance law is used to generate the yaw angle setpoint that ensures path following. In the second stage, two model predictive con…
This paper investigates the chattering and deadlock behaviors of the proportional-integral (PI) controller with an anti-windup (AW) limiter recommended by the IEEE Standard 421.5-2016. Depending on the simulation method, the controller may enter a chattering or deadlock state in some combinations of parameters and inputs. Chattering and deadlock are analyzed in the context of three numerical integration approaches: explicit partitioned method (EPM), execution-list based method (ELM), and implicit trapezoidal method (ITM). This paper derives the chattering stop condition for EPM and ELP, and an…
In this paper, formation tracking for a multi-AUV system (MAS) using an improved adaptive sliding mode control method is studied in the Three Dimensional (3-D) underwater environment. Firstly, the kinematics model and the dynamic model of the AUVs are given as the Six Dimensions of Freedom (6-DOF) considered. Then, control law based on the mathematical model of the AUVs is proposed based on the improved sliding mode method. A second order sliding mode control method is adopted to eliminate the chatting phenomenon of the controller. Thirdly, considering the water flow in the underwater working …
Resonant controllers are widely used in applications involving reference tracking and disturbance rejection of periodic signals. The controller design is typically performed by a trial-and-error approach or by means of time and resource-consuming analytic methods that require an accurate plant model, intricated mathematics and sophisticated tools. In this paper, we propose an easily implementable, model-free method for tuning a proportional-multi-resonant controller applicable to general linear time-invariant causal plants. Just like the Ziegler-Nichols methods, the proposed methodology consis…

Robot manipulators are extensively used in industrial applications because of their immense importance such as in constructions automation. Therefore, designing controllers to suit the intensive purpose of the application is one of the major challenges for control researchers. This paper presents comparative analysis of three controllers on a 3-DOF robot manipulator. The proportional integral derivative (PID), proportional derivative (PD) and fuzzy logic (FL) controllers were designed and applied to each of the link of the robot by simulation. The performance of each control method was assesse…

The aim of this paper is to propose a high performance control approach for trajectory tracking of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). However, the controller performance can be affected by the unknown perturbations including model uncertainties and external time-varying disturbances in an undersea environment. To address this problem, a Backstepping-based Integral Sliding Mode Control with Time Delay Estimation (BS-ISMC-TDE) is designed. To improve the performance of a conventional backstepping control algorithm, an Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) approach is adopted in the backsteppi…

Consensus formation tracking of multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) subject to nonlinear and uncertain dynamics is a challenging problem in robotics. To tackle this challenge, a distributed bioinspired sliding mode controller is proposed in this paper. First, the conventional sliding mode controller (SMC) is presented, and the consensus problem is addressed on the basis of graph theory. Next, to tackle the high frequency chattering issue in SMC scheme and meanwhile improve the robustness to the noises, a bioinspired approach is introduced, in which a neural dynamic model is employed…
The main objective of this work is demonstrated through two main aspects. The first is the design of an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) controller to develop the attitude and altitude of a quadcopter. The second is to establish the linearized mathematical model of the quadcopter in a simple and clear way. To show the effectiveness of the ANFIS approach, the performance of a well-trained ANFIS controller is compared to a classical proportional-derivative (PD) controller and a properly tuned fuzzy logic controller.
Drones are effective for reducing human activity and interactions by performing tasks such as exploring and inspecting new environments, monitoring resources and delivering packages. Drones need a controller to maintain stability and to reach their goal. The most well-known drone controllers are proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and proportional-derivative (PD) controllers. However, the controller parameters need to be tuned and optimized. In this paper, we introduce the use of two evolutionary algorithms, biogeography-based optimization~(BBO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), for mu…
This paper proposes a coordinate-free controller for a nonholonomic vehicle to circumnavigate a fully-actuated moving target by using range-only measurements. If the range rate is available, our Proportional Derivative (PD)-like controller has a simple structure as the standard PD controller, except the design of an additive constant bias and a saturation function in the error feedback. We show that if the target is stationary, the vehicle asymptotically encloses the target with a predefined radius at an exponential convergence rate, i.e., an exact circumnavigation pattern can be completed.
