In this paper, the Moyal star-product quantization is used to construct the unitary irreducible representations of the Euclidean motion group on 3-dimensions. These unitary representations will come from the representation of its Lie algebra whose operators are defined by the left Moyal star-product multiplication. In fact, these representations of the Lie algebra is the infinitisimal representation. Hence, the exponentiation of these operators gives rise to unitary operators that defines the desired unitary representations.
In this paper the connection between quantum field theories on flat noncommutative space(-times) in Euclidean and Lorentzian signature is studied for the case that time is still commutative. By making use of the algebraic framework of quantum field theory and an analytic continuation of the symmetry groups which are compatible with the structure of Moyal space, a general correspondence between field theories on Euclidean space satisfying a time zero condition and quantum field theories on Moyal Minkowski space is presented ("Wick rotation"). It is then shown that field theories transferred to …
A Lie algebraic approach to the unitary transformations in Weyl quantization is discussed. This approach, being formally equivalent to the $\star$-quantization, is an extension of the classical Poisson-Lie formalism which can be used as an efficient tool in the quantum phase space transformation theory.
Discussed are some geometric aspects of the phase space formalism in quantum mechanics in the sense of Weyl, Wigner, Moyal and Ville. We analyze the relationship between this formalism and geometry of the Galilei group, classical momentum mapping, theory of unitary projective representations of groups, and theory of groups algebras. Later on we present some generalization to quantum mechanics on locally compact Abelian groups. It is based on Pontryagin duality. Indicated are certain physical aspects in quantum dynamics of crystal lattices, including the phenomenon of "Umklapp-Prozessen"
A normal form transformation is carried out on the operators of a complete set of commuting observables in a multidimensional, integrable quantum system, mapping them by unitary conjugation into functions of the harmonic oscillators in the various degrees of freedom. The transformation works at the level of the Weyl symbols of the operators, which are manipulated as formal power series in hbar by use of the Moyal star product. It is assumed that the Weyl symbol of one of the operators (the Hamiltonian) has a generic, stable fixed point in phase space. The normal form transformation takes place…
We present a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics in the Schrödinger representation and derive the associated Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. We prove that the resulting theory is unitarily equivalent to the standard "configuration space" formulation and show that it allows for a uniform treatment of both pure and mixed quantum states. In the second part of the paper we determine the unitary transformation (and its infinitesimal generator) that maps the phase space Schrödinger representation into another (called Moyal) representation, where the wave function is the cross-Wigner func…
A classical theorem of Stone and von Neumann says that the Schrödinger representation is, up to unitary equivalences, the only irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions on configuration space. Using the Wigner-Moyal transform we construct an irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on a certain Hilbert space of square-integrable functions defined on phase space. This allows us to extend the usual Weyl calculus into a phase-space calculus and leads us to a quantum mechanics in phase space, equivalent to standard quantum mech…
We describe a technique to study the asymptotics of SL(2,C) invariant tensors associated to graphs, with unitary irreps and lowest SU(2) spins, and apply it to the Lorentzian EPRL-KKL (Engle, Pereira, Rovelli, Livine; Kaminski, Kieselowski, Lewandowski) model of quantum gravity. We reproduce the known asymptotics of the 4-simplex graph with a different perspective on the geometric variables and introduce an algorithm valid for any graph. On general grounds, we find that critical configurations are not just Regge geometries, but a larger set corresponding to conformal twisted geometries. These …
The structure constants for Moyal brackets of an infinite basis of functions on the algebraic manifolds M of pseudo-unitary groups U(N_+,N_-) are provided. They generalize the Virasoro and W_\infty algebras to higher dimensions. The connection with volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on M, higher generalized-spin and tensor operator algebras of U(N_+,N_-) is discussed. These centrally-extended, infinite-dimensional Lie-algebras provide also the arena for non-linear integrable field theories in higher dimensions, residual gauge symmetries of higher-extended objects in the light-cone gauge and C^*…
The phase point operator $Δ(q,p)$ is the quantum mechanical counterpart of the classical phase point $(q,p)$. The discrete form of $Δ(q,p)$ was formulated for an odd number of lattice points by Cohendet et al. and for an even number of lattice points by Leonhardt. Both versions have symplectic covariance, which is of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics. However, an explicit form of the projective representation of the symplectic group that appears in the covariance relation is not yet known. We show in this paper the existence and uniqueness of the representation, and describe a method…
A family of multivariate orthogonal polynomials generalizing the standard (univariate) Charlier polynomials is shown to arise in the matrix elements of the unitary representation of the Euclidean group E(d) on oscillator states. These polynomials in d discrete variables are orthogonal on the product of d Poisson distributions. The accent is put on the d=2 case and the group theoretical setting is used to obtain the main properties of the polynomials: orthogonality and recurrence relations, difference equation, raising/lowering relations, generating function, hypergeometric and integral represe…
Reflection positivity originates from one of the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms for constructive quantum field theory. It serves as a bridge between euclidean and relativistic quantum field theory. In mathematics, more specifically, in representation theory, it is related to the Cartan duality of symmetric Lie groups (Lie groups with an involution) and results in a transformation of a unitary representation of a symmetric Lie group to a unitary representation of its Cartan dual. In this article we continue our investigation of representation theoretic aspects of reflection positivity by discussin…
We quantise the Euclidean torus universe via a combinatorial quantisation formalism based on its formulation as a Chern-Simons gauge theory and on the representation theory of the Drinfel'd double DSU(2). The resulting quantum algebra of observables is given by two commuting copies of the Heisenberg algebra, and the associated Hilbert space can be identified with the space of square integrable functions on the torus. We show that this Hilbert space carries a unitary representation of the modular group and discuss the role of modular invariance in the theory. We derive the classical limit of th…
A spinless covariant field $ϕ$ on Minkowski spacetime $\M^{d+1}$ obeys the relation $U(a,Λ)ϕ(x)U(a,Λ)^{-1}=ϕ(Λx+a)$ where $(a,Λ)$ is an element of the Poincaré group $\Pg$ and $U:(a,Λ)\to U(a,Λ)$ is its unitary representation on quantum vector states. It expresses the fact that Poincaré transformations are being unitary implemented. It has a classical analogy where field covariance shows that Poincaré transformations are canonically implemented. Covariance is self-reproducing: products of covariant fields are covariant. We recall these properties and use them to formulate the notion of covaria…
We give a pedagogical presentation of the irreducible unitary representations of $\mathbb{C}^4\rtimes\mathbf{Spin}(4,\mathbb{C})$, that is, of the universal cover of the complexified Poincaré group $\mathbb{C}^4\rtimes\mathbf{SO}(4,\mathbb{C})$. These representations were first investigated by Roffman in 1967. We provide a modern formulation of his results together with some facts from the general Wigner-Mackey theory which are relevant in this context. Moreover, we discuss different ways to realize these representations and, in the case of a non-zero "complex mass", we give a detailed constru…
We propose a model for the dS/CFT correspondence. The model is constructed in terms of a "Yang-Baxter operator" $R$ for unitary representations of the deSitter group $SO(d,1)$. This $R$-operator is shown to satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation, unitarity, as well as certain analyticity relations, including in particular a crossing symmetry. With the aid of this operator we construct: a) A chiral (light-ray) conformal quantum field theory whose internal degrees of freedom transform under the given unitary representation of $SO(d,1)$. By analogy with the $O(N)$ non-linear sigma model, this chiral CF…
We present a formalism of Galilean quantum mechanics in non-inertial reference frames and discuss its implications for the equivalence principle. This extension of quantum mechanics rests on the Galilean line group, the semidirect product of the real line and the group of analytic functions from the real line to the Euclidean group in three dimensions. This group provides transformations between all inertial and non-inertial reference frames and contains the Galilei group as a subgroup. We construct a certain class of unitary representations of the Galilean line group and show that these repre…
The concept of reflection positivity has its origins in the work of Osterwalder--Schrader on constructive quantum field theory and duality between unitary representations of the euclidean motion group and the Poincare group. On the mathematical side this duality can be made precise as follows. If $\g$ is a Lie algebra with an involutive automorphism $τ$. Decompose $\g = \fh \oplus \fq = \ker(τ- \1) \oplus \ker(τ+ \1)$ into $τ$-eigenspaces and let $\g^c := \fh \oplus i \fq$. At the core of the notion of reflection positivity is the idea that this duality can sometimes be implemented on the leve…
We present a unified group-theoretical derivation of the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the circle $\mathbb S^1$ and the real line $\mathbb{R}$, following the general formalism of Coherent States (CS) associated to unitary square integrable (modulo a subgroup, possibly) representations of the group $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. A general procedure for obtaining unitary representations of a group $G$ of affine transformations on a space of signals $L^2(X,dx)$ is described, relating carrier spaces $X$ to (first or higher-order) ``polarization subalgebras'' ${\cal P}_X$. We also provide explicit adm…
The $C^*$-algebraic $κ$-Poincaré Group is constructed. The construction uses groupoid algebras of differential groupoids associated to Lie group decomposition. It turns out the underlying $C^*$-algebra is the same as for "$κ$-Euclidean Group" but a comultiplication is twisted by some unitary multiplier. Generators and commutation relations among them are presented.
This paper explores the representation of quantum computing in terms of unitary reflections (unitary transformations that leave invariant a hyperplane of a vector space). The symmetries of qubit systems are found to be supported by Euclidean real reflections (i.e., Coxeter groups) or by specific imprimitive reflection groups, introduced (but not named) in a recent paper [Planat M and Jorrand Ph 2008, {\it J Phys A: Math Theor} {\bf 41}, 182001]. The automorphisms of multiple qubit systems are found to relate to some Clifford operations once the corresponding group of reflections is identified.…
We study the large N asymptotics of the Brownian motions on the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic groups, extend the convergence in non-commutative distribution originally obtained by Biane for the unitary Brownian motion to the orthogonal and symplectic cases, and derive explicit estimates for the speed of convergence in non-commutative distribution of arbitrary words in independent Brownian motions. Using these results, we construct and study the large N limit of the Yang-Mills measure on the Euclidean plane with orthogonal, unitary and symplectic structure groups. We prove that each Wilson…
For the group O(p,q) we give a new construction of its minimal unitary representation via Euclidean Fourier analysis. This is an extension of the q = 2 case, where the representation is the mass zero, spin zero representation realized in a Hilbert space of solutions to the wave equation. The group O(p,q) acts as the Moebius group of conformal transformations on R^{p-1, q-1}, and preserves a space of solutions of the ultrahyperbolic Laplace equation on R^{p-1, q-1}. We construct in an intrinsic and natural way a Hilbert space of ultrahyperbolic solutions so that O(p,q) becomes a continuous irre…
We study a new class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras W_\infty(p,q) generalizing the standard W_\infty algebra, viewed as a tensor operator algebra of SU(1,1) in a group-theoretic framework. Here we interpret W_\infty(p,q) either as an infinite continuation of the pseudo-unitary symmetry U(p,q), or as a "higher-U(p,q)-spin extension" of the diffeomorphism algebra diff(p,q) of the N=p+q torus U(1)^N. We highlight this higher-spin structure of W_\infty(p,q) by developing the representation theory of U(p,q) (discrete series), calculating higher-spin representations, coherent states and derivi…
