In this paper, we eliminate the classical outer learning loop of the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and present a strategy to find good parameters for QAOA based on topological arguments of the problem graph and tensor network techniques. Starting from the observation of the concentration of control parameters of QAOA, we find a way to classically infer parameters which scales polynomially in the number of qubits and exponentially with the depth of the circuit. Using this strategy, the quantum processing unit (QPU) is only needed to infer the final state of QAOA. This method paves the way for a variation-free version of QAOA and makes QAOA more practical for applications on NISQ devices. Moreover, we show the applicability of our method beyond the scope of QAOA, in improving schedules for quantum annealing.
Compilation of unitaries into a sequence of physical quantum gates is a critical prerequisite for execution of quantum algorithms. This work introduces STOQ, a stochastic search protocol for approximate unitary compilation into a sequence of gates from an arbitrary gate alphabet. We demonstrate STOQ by comparing its performance to existing product-formula compilation techniques for time-evolution unitaries on system sizes up to eight qubits. The compilations generated by STOQ are less accurate than those from product-formula techniques, but they are similar in runtime and traverse significantl…
We theoretically implement some hyperparallel optical elements, including quantum single photon transistor, router, and dynamic random access memory (DRAM). The inevitable side leakage and the imperfect birefringence of the quantum dot (QD)-cavity mediates are taken into account, and unity fidelities of our optical elements can be achieved. The hyperparallel constructions are based on polarization and spatial degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the photon to increase the parallel efficiency, improve the capacity of channel, save the quantum resources, reduce the operation time, and decrease the envir…
We develop the concept of a unitary t-design as a means of expressing operationally useful subsets of the stochastic properties of the uniform (Haar) measure on the unitary group U(2^n) on n qubits. In particular, sets of unitaries forming 2-designs have wide applicability to quantum information protocols. We devise an O(n)-size in-place circuit construction for an approximate unitary 2-design. We then show that this can be used to construct an efficient protocol for experimentally characterizing the fidelity of a quantum process on n qubits with quantum circuits of size O(n) without requiring…
Quantum supremacy in many applications using well-known quantum algorithms rely on availability of data in quantum format. Quantum Random Access Memory (QRAM), an equivalent of classical Random Access Memory (RAM), fulfills this requirement. However, the existing QRAM proposals either require qutrit technology and/or incur access challenges. We propose an approximate Parametric Quantum Circuit (PQC) based QRAM which takes address lines as input and gives out the corresponding data in these address lines as the output. We present two applications of the proposed PQC-based QRAM namely, storage o…
One of the challenges in quantum computing is the synthesis of unitary operators into quantum circuits with polylogarithmic gate complexity. Exact synthesis of generic unitaries requires an exponential number of gates in general. We propose a novel approximate quantum circuit synthesis technique by relaxing the unitary constraints and interchanging them for ancilla qubits via block-encodings. This approach combines smaller block-encodings, which are easier to synthesize, into quantum circuits for larger operators. Due to the use of block-encodings, our technique is not limited to unitary opera…
In a breakthrough, Hastings' showed that there exist quantum channels whose classical capacity is superadditive i.e. more classical information can be transmitted by quantum encoding strategies entangled across multiple channel uses as compared to unentangled quantum encoding strategies. Hastings' proof used Haar random unitaries to exhibit superadditivity. In this paper we show that a unitary chosen uniformly at random from an approximate $n^{2/3}$-design gives rise to a quantum channel with superadditive classical Holevo capacity, where $n$ is the dimension of the unitary exhibiting the Stin…
At its core a $t$-design is a method for sampling from a set of unitaries in a way which mimics sampling randomly from the Haar measure on the unitary group, with applications across quantum information processing and physics. We construct new families of quantum circuits on $n$-qubits giving rise to $\varepsilon$-approximate unitary $t$-designs efficiently in $O(n^3t^{12})$ depth. These quantum circuits are based on a relaxation of technical requirements in previous constructions. In particular, the construction of circuits which give efficient approximate $t$-designs by Brandao, Harrow, and …
A quantum processor is a programmable quantum circuit in which both the data and the program, which specifies the operation that is carried out on the data, are quantum states. We study the situation in which we want to use such a processor to approximate a set of unitary operators to a specified level of precision. We measure how well an operation is performed by the process fidelity between the desired operation and the operation produced by the processor. We show how to find the program for a given processor that produces the best approximation of a particular unitary operation. We also pla…
We demonstrate how insights gained from reformulating the problem of quantum teleportation into one of reversing quantum operations, and designing optimum completely positive maps for teleportation, can enable one to explore optimal approximate reversal of quantum operations on a single qubit. In particular, we show that the optimal approximate reversal of a generalized depolarizing channel can be achieved using only unitary transformations. We also show that for a quantum channel, which reveals some information about the input state, extremal completely positive maps and not unitary transform…
We investigate the approximate quantum state sharing protocol based on random unitary channels, which is secure against any exterior or interior attackers in principle. Although the protocol leaks small information for a security parameter $ε$, the scheme still preserves its information-theoretic secrecy, and reduces some pre-shared classical secret keys for a private quantum channel between a sender and two receivers. The approximate private quantum channels constructed via random unitary channels play a crucial role in the proposed quantum state sharing protocol.
During the early history of unitary quantum theory the Kato's exceptional points (EPs, a.k.a. non-Hermitian degeneracies) of Hamiltonians $H(λ)$ did not play any significant role, mainly due to the Stone theorem which firmly connected the unitarity with the Hermiticity. During the recent wave of optimism people started believing that the corridors of a unitary access to the EPs could be opened leading, say, to a new picture of quantum phase transitions via an {\it ad hoc} weakening of the Hermiticty (replaced by the quasi-Hermiticity). Subsequently, the pessimism prevailed (the paths of access…
In this Letter we make progress on a longstanding open problem of Aaronson and Ambainis [Theory of Computing 1, 47 (2005)]: we show that if A is the adjacency matrix of a sufficiently sparse low-dimensional graph then the unitary operator e^{itA} can be approximated by a unitary operator U(t) whose sparsity pattern is exactly that of a low-dimensional graph which gets more dense as |t| increases. Secondly, we show that if U is a sparse unitary operator with a gap Δin its spectrum, then there exists an approximate logarithm H of U which is also sparse. The sparsity pattern of H gets more dense …
In this paper we discuss the utilization of Variational Quantum Solver (VQE) and recently introduced Generalized Unitary Coupled Cluster (GUCC) formalism for the diagonalization of downfolded/effective Hamiltonians in active spaces. In addition to effective Hamiltonians defined by the downfolding of a subset of virtual orbitals we also consider their form defined by freezing core orbitals, which enables us to deal with larger systems. We also consider various solvers to identify solutions of the GUCC equations. We use N$_2$, H$_2$O, and C$_2$H$_4$, and benchmark systems to illustrate the perfo…
The applications of random quantum circuits range from quantum computing and quantum many-body systems to the physics of black holes. Many of these applications are related to the generation of quantum pseudorandomness: Random quantum circuits are known to approximate unitary $t$-designs. Unitary $t$-designs are probability distributions that mimic Haar randomness up to $t$th moments. In a seminal paper, Brandão, Harrow and Horodecki prove that random quantum circuits on qubits in a brickwork architecture of depth $O(n t^{10.5})$ are approximate unitary $t$-designs. In this work, we revisit th…
Unitary $t$-designs are the bread and butter of quantum information theory and beyond. An important issue in practice is that of efficiently constructing good approximations of such unitary $t$-designs. Building on results by Aubrun (Comm. Math. Phys. 2009), we prove that sampling $d^t\mathrm{poly}(t,\log d, 1/ε)$ unitaries from an exact $t$-design provides with positive probability an $ε$-approximate $t$-design, if the error is measured in one-to-one norm distance of the corresponding $t$-twirling channels. As an application, we give a partially derandomized construction of a quantum encrypti…
We introduce the problem of unitarization. Unitarization is the problem of taking $k$ input quantum circuits that produce orthogonal states from the all $0$ state, and create an output circuit implementing a unitary with its first $k$ columns as those states. That is, the output circuit takes the $k$th computational basis state to the state prepared by the $k$th input circuit. We allow the output circuit to use ancilla qubits initialized to $0$. But ancilla qubits must always be returned to $0$ for any input. The input circuits may use ancilla qubits, but we are only guaranteed the they return…
In this paper we consider decoherence-free communication over multiple access and $k$-user quantum channels. First, we concentrate on a hermitian unitary noise model $U$ for a two-access bi-unitary channel and show that in this case a decoherence-free code exists if the space of Schmidt matrices of an eigensubspace of $U$ exhibits certain properties of decomposability. Then, we show that our technique is also applicable for generic random unitary two-access channels. Finally, we consider the applicability of the result to the case of a larger number of senders and general Kraus operators.
Epsilon-nets and approximate unitary $t$-designs are natural notions that capture properties of unitary operations relevant for numerous applications in quantum information and quantum computing. The former constitute subsets of unitary channels that are epsilon-close to any unitary channel in the diamond norm. The latter are ensembles of unitaries that (approximately) recover Haar averages of polynomials in entries of unitary channels up to order $t$. In this work we establish quantitative connections between these two notions. Specifically, we prove that, for a fixed dimension $d$ of the Hil…
Random quantum circuits are proficient information scramblers and efficient generators of randomness, rapidly approximating moments of the unitary group. We study the convergence of local random quantum circuits to unitary $k$-designs. Employing a statistical mechanical mapping, we give an exact expression of the distance to forming an approximate design as a lattice partition function. In the statistical mechanics model, the approach to randomness has a simple interpretation in terms of domain walls extending through the circuit. We analytically compute the second moment, showing that random …
