We apply the renormalization group optimized perturbation theory (RGOPT)to evaluate the QCD (matter) pressure at the two-loop level considering three flavors of massless quarks in a dense and cold medium. Already at leading order ($α_s^0$), which builds on the simple one loop (RG resummed) term, our technique provides a non-trivial non-perturbative approximation which is completely renormalization group invariant. At the next-to-leading order the comparison between the RGOPT and the pQCD predictions shows that the former method provides results which are in better agreement with the state-of-the-art $higher \, order$ perturbative results, which include a contribution of order $α_s^3 \ln^2 α_s$. At the same time one also observes that the RGOPT predictions are less sensitive to variations of the arbitrary $\bar{\rm MS}$ renormalization scale than those obtained with pQCD. These results indicate that the RGOPT provides an efficient resummation scheme which may be considered as an alternative to lattice simulations at high baryonic densities.
We analyze the chiral phase transition of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the cold and dense region on the lattice developing the Grassmann version of the anisotropic tensor renormalization group algorithm. The model is formulated with the Kogut--Susskind fermion action. We use the chiral condensate as an order parameter to investigate the restoration of the chiral symmetry. The first-order chiral phase transition is clearly observed in the dense region at vanishing temperature with $μ/T\sim O(10^3)$ on a large volume of $V=1024^4$. We also present the results for the equation of state.
The superconductivity in cold dense QCD with three massless flavors is analyzed in the framework of the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The set of two coupled gap equations for the color antitriplet, flavor antitriplet (bar{3},bar{3}) and the color sextet, flavor sextet (6,6) order parameters is derived. It is shown that the antitriplet-antitriplet gives the dominant contribution to the color-flavor locked order parameter, while the sextet-sextet is small but nonzero.
A regularization scheme that explicitly separates vacuum contributions from medium effects is applied to a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with diquark interactions and in $β-$equilibrium. We perform a comparison of this proposed scheme with the more traditional one, where no separation of vacuum and medium effects is done. Our results point to both qualitative and quantitative important differences between these two methods, in special regarding the phase structure of the model in the cold and dense nuclear matter case.
The Bethe-Salpeter equations for diquarks with the quantum numbers of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons are analyzed in the color-flavor locked phase of cold dense QCD with three quark flavors. The decay constants and the velocities of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons are calculated in the Pagels-Stokar approximation. It is also shown that, in contrast to the case of dense QCD with two flavors, there are no massive radial excitations with quantum numbers of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the color-flavor locked phase. The role of the Meissner effect in the pairing dynamics of diquarks is explained.
We derive and analyze the Bethe-Salpeter equations for spin zero diquarks in the color superconducting phase of cold dense QCD with two massless flavors. The spectrum of diquarks contains an infinite number of massive excitations and five (nearly) massless pseudoscalars. The former are singlets while the latter include a doublet, an antidoublet and a singlet with respect to the unbroken $SU(2)_{c}$. Because of an approximate parity doubling at large chemical potential, all massive states come in pairs. The decay constants, as well as the velocities of the (nearly) massless pseudoscalars are de…
The Bethe-Salpeter equations for spin zero diquark composites in the color superconducting phase of $N_f=2$ and $N_f=3$ cold dense QCD are studied. The explicit form of the spectrum of the diquarks with the quantum numbers of the (pseudo-) Nambu-Goldstone bosons is derived.
In this article, we study dynamic chiral symmetry breaking at zero temperature, finite chemical potential and external magnetic field with massless NJL model. We have proposed a mathematical method to classify phases in phase diagram of cold dense quark matter, and use mathematical analysis to identify the multi phase phenomenon among solutions for gap equation which means with fixed chemical potential and magnetic field, there could be two phases coexisting.
We present a renormalization-group (RG) flow argument for s-wave kaon condensation in dense nuclear-star matter predicted in chiral perturbation theory. It is shown that it is the {\it relevant} mass term together with {\it any} attractive interaction for the kaon in medium that triggers the instability. We show that a saddle point of multi-dimensional RG flow can imply a phase transition. Pion condensation is also analyzed along the same line of reasoning.
Fluctuations are included in a chiral nucleon-meson model within the framework of the functional renormalization group. The model, with parameters fitted to reproduce the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, is used to study the phase diagram of QCD. We find good agreement with results from chiral effective field theory. Moreover, the results show a separation of the chemical freeze-out line and chiral symmetry restoration at large baryon chemical potentials.
Dense relativistic matter has attracted a lot of attention over many decades now, with a focus on an understanding of the phase structure and thermodynamics of dense strong-interaction matter. The analysis of dense strong-interaction matter is complicated by the fact that the system is expected to undergo a transition from a regime governed by spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking at low densities to a regime governed by the presence of a Cooper instability at intermediate and high densities. Renormalization group (RG) approaches have played and still play a prominent role in studies of dense m…
In this talk I review some of the main findings on magnetism in color superconductivity. The physical characteristic of the different phases that are reached by increasing the applied magnetic field in a three-flavor color superconductor at asymptotically high densities are discussed. A mechanism to boost a seed magnetic field in high-dense quark matter is presented. Also, it is shown how a magnetic field can be generated in a color superconductor at moderate densities. Possible implications of these results for the astrophysics of magnetized compact objects are indicated.
We discuss recent results for the equation of state for cold and dense strongly interacting matter. We consider the extreme cases of very high densities, where weak-coupling approaches may in principle give reasonable results, and very low densities, where we use the framework of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We also speculate on the nature of the chiral transition and present possible astrophysical implications.
For almost twenty years the effects of a nonzero strange quark mass on the equation of state of cold and dense QCD were considered to be negligible, thereby yielding only minor corrections to the mass-radius diagram of compact stars. By computing the thermodynamic potential to first order in α_s, and including the effects of the renormalization group running of the coupling and strange quark mass, we show that corrections can be of the order of 25%, and dramatically affect the structure of compact stars.
We study the relativistic van Alphen--de Haas effect in cold dense quark matter in a homogeneous magnetic field which arises from oscillations in the effective potential of an underlying extended NJL-model. Finally, we discuss the phase structure of the model in the parameter plane $(μ,H)$ and the solution of the mass gap equation.
We discuss the Hard Dense Loop resummation at finite quark mass and evaluate the equation of state (EoS) of cold and dense QCD matter in $β$ equilibrium. The resummation in the quark sector has an effect of lowering the baryon number density and the EoS turns out to have much smaller uncertainty than the perturbative QCD estimate. Our numerical results favor smooth matching between the EoS from the resummed QCD calculation at high density and the extrapolated EoS from the nuclear matter density region. We also point out that the speed of sound in our EoS slightly exceeds the conformal limit.
We review what is different and what is similar in a color superconductor as compared to an ordinary BCS superconductor. The parametric dependence of the zero-temperature gap on the coupling constant differs in QCD from that in BCS theory. On the other hand, the transition temperature to the superconducting phase is related to the zero-temperature gap in the same way in QCD as in BCS theory.
The color neutral two-flavor superconducting (2SC) phase of cold and dense quark matter is studied in the presence of constant magnetic fields and at moderate baryon densities. In the first part of the paper, a two-flavor effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model consisting of a chiral symmetry breaking mass gap sigma_{B}, a color superconducting mass gap Delta_{B} and a color neutrality coefficient mu_{8} is introduced in the presence of a rotated U(1) magnetic field B. To study the phenomenon of magnetic catalysis in the presence of strong magnetic fields, the gap equations corresponding to sigma_…
We consider the equation of state of QCD at high density and zero temperature in perturbation theory to first order in the coupling constant $α_s$. We compute the thermodynamic potential including the effect of a non-vanishing mass for the strange quark and show that corrections are sizable. Renormalization group running of the coupling and the strange quark mass plays a crucial role. The structure of quark stars is dramatically modified.
The way to create and to investigate a dense cold matter droplets in the laboratory is proposed. The reality of this approach are argued. Estimated possible statistic is large enough for detail study of the properties of such a matter. Mechanism of kinematical cooling of the droplet is clarified. Different types of trigger(selection criteria) are proposed to search for different kind of exotic.

We review the non-Fermi or marginal liquid behavior of a relativistic QED plasma. In this medium a quasiparticle has a damping rate that depends linearly on the distance between its energy and the Fermi surface. We stress that this dependence is due to the long-range character of the magnetic interactions in the medium. Finally, we study how the quark damping rate modifies the gap equation of color superconductivity, reducing the value of the gap at the Fermi surface.
We apply the renormalization group optimized perturbation theory (RGOPT) to evaluate the quark contribution to the QCD pressure at finite temperatures and baryonic densities, at next-to-leading order (NLO). Our results are compared to NLO and state-of-the-art higher orders of standard perturbative QCD (pQCD) and hard thermal loop perturbation theory (HTLpt). The RGOPT resummation provides a nonperturbative approximation, exhibiting a drastically better remnant renormalization scale dependence than pQCD, thanks to built-in renormalization group invariance consistency. At NLO, upon simply adding…
The surface tension of cold and dense QCD phase transitions has appeared recently as a key ingredient in different astrophysical scenarios, ranging from core-colapse supernovae explosions to compact star structure. If the surface tension is low enough, observable consequences are possible. Its value is however not known from first-principle methods in QCD, calling for effective approaches. Working within the framework of homogeneous nucleation by Langer, we discuss the steps that are needed to obtain the nucleation parameters from a given effective potential. As a model for deriving the effect…
A previously derived three-dimensional effective lattice theory describing the thermodynamics of QCD with heavy quarks in the cold and dense region is extended through order $\sim u^5κ^8$ in the combined character and hopping expansion of the original four-dimensional Wilson action. The systematics of the effective theory is investigated to determine its range of validity in parameter space. We demonstrate the severe cut-off effects due to lattice saturation, which afflict any lattice results at finite baryon density independent of the sign problem or the quality of effective theories, and whi…
In a previous article, the 4D half-skyrmion (or 5D dyonic salt) structure of dense baryonic matter described in crystalline configuration in the large $N_c$ limit was shown to impact nontrivially on how anti-kaons behave in compressed nuclear matter with a possible implication on an "ice-9" phenomenon of deeply bound kaonic matter and condensed kaons in compact stars. We extend the analysis to make a further prediction on the scaling properties of hadrons that have a surprising effect on the nuclear tensor forces, the symmetry energy and hence on the phase structure at high density. We treat t…
The possibility for existence of cold, dense chirally symmetric matter with confinement is reviewed. The answer to this question crucially depends on the mechanism of mass generation in QCD and interconnection of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. This question can be clarified from spectroscopy of hadrons and their axial properties. Almost systematical parity doubling of highly excited hadrons suggests that their mass is not related to chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and is approximately chirally symmetric. Then there is a possibility for existence of confining but chirally symm…
We calculate the symmetry energy in cold dense matter both in the normal quark phase and in the 2-color superconductor (2SC) phase. For the normal phase, the thermodynamic potential is calculated by using hard dense loop (HDL) resummation to leading order, where the dominant contribution comes from the longitudinal gluon rest mass. The effect of gluonic interaction to the symmetry energy, obtained from the thermodynamic potential, was found to be small. In the 2SC phase, the non-perturbative BCS paring gives enhanced symmetry energy as the gapped states are forced to be in the common Fermi sea…
We investigate the phase transition in cold and dense quark matter in an intuitive way that shares common features of the effective model approaches. We first express the quasi-particle contribution to the thermodynamic potential with the dynamical mass M and then discuss how we can understand the possible first-order phase transition with and without the vector interaction from the saturation curve on the plane of the energy per particle and the density. We next extend our analysis including inhomogeneity and discuss the relation between the order of the phase transition and the saturation cu…
Infrared divergences from the exchange of dynamically screened magnetic gluons (photons) lead to the breakdown of the Fermi liquid description of the {\em normal} state of cold and dense QCD and QED. We implement a resummation of these divergences via the renormalization group to obtain the spectral density, dispersion relation, widths and wave function renormalization of single quasiparticles near the Fermi surface. We find that all feature scaling with anomalous dimensions: $ω_p({k}) \propto |k-k_F|^{\frac{1}{1-2λ}} ~ ; ~ Γ(k) \propto |k-k_F|^{\frac{1}{1-2λ}} ~;~ Z_p({k}) \propto |k-k_F|^{\f…
This thesis is devoted to properties of quark matter at high density and (comparatively) low temperature, which might exist in the interior of compact stars. The specific heat and the quark self energy in normal quark matter are discussed in detail. In particular higher order corrections to the known leading order results are obtained. Also the phenomenon of color superconductivity is discussed, with particular emphasis on the proof of gauge independence of the fermionic quasiparticle dispersion laws. Moreover, the expectation value of the gluon field in the 2SC and CFL phase is computed at le…
The linear sigma model with quarks at very low temperatures provides an effective description for the thermodynamics of the strong interaction in cold and dense matter, being especially useful at densities found in compact stars and protoneutron star matter. Using the MSbar one-loop effective potential, we compute quantities that are relevant in the process of nucleation of droplets of quark matter in this scenario. In particular, we show that the model predicts a surface tension of Σ~ 5-15 MeV/fm^2, rendering nucleation of quark matter possible during the early post-bounce stage of core colla…
We construct the spectral functions for light vector mesons at finite density and temperature in the presence of a novel mixing between parity partners, induced by baryon density via the Wess-Zumino-Witten action. As the main origin of in-medium broadening, a set of baryon resonances that strongly couple to the vector mesons and the modifications of kaons and anti-kaons due to the Kaplan-Nelson term are included. It is shown that the vector spectra, even with the broadening effects, exhibit sizable signatures of chiral symmetry restoration thanks to the chiral mixing depending on three-momenta…
A simple mixed phase model mimicking so-called "pasta" phases in the quark-hadron phase transition is developed and applied to static neutron stars for the case of DD2 type hadonic and NJL type quark matter models. The influence of the mixed phase on the mass-radius relation of the compact stars is investigated. Model parameters are chosen such that the results are in agreement with the observational constraints for masses and radii of pulsars.

Our Universe is full of regions where extreme physical conditions are realized. Among the most intriguing cases are the so-called magnetars: neutron stars with very dense cores and super-strong magnetic fields. In this paper I review the current understanding of the physical properties of quark matter at ultra-high density in the presence of very large magnetic fields. I will discuss the main results on this topic, the main challenges that still remain, and how they could be related to the physics of magnetars.
In this paper we study the confinement/deconfinement transition in lattice $SU(2)$ QCD at finite quark density and zero temperature. The simulations are performed on an $32^4$ lattice with rooted staggered fermions at a lattice spacing $a = 0.044 \mathrm{~fm}$. This small lattice spacing allowed us to reach very large baryon density (up to quark chemical potential $μ_q > 2000 \mathrm{~MeV}$) avoiding strong lattice artifacts. In the region $μ_q\sim 1000 \mathrm{~MeV}$ we observe for the first time the confinement/deconfinement transition which manifests itself in rising of the Polyakov loop an…
Probing dense hadronic matter is thus far an uncharted field of physics. Here we give a brief summary of the highlights of what has been so far accomplished and what will be done in the years ahead by the World Class University III Project at Hanyang University in the endeavor to unravel and elucidate the multifacet of the cold dense baryonic matter existing in the interior of the densest visible stable object in the Universe, i.e., neutron stars, strangeness stars and/or quark stars, from a modest and simplified starting point of an effective field theory modeled on the premise of QCD as well…
The folklore tradition about the QCD phase diagram is that at the chiral restoration phase transition at finite density hadrons are deconfined and there appears the quark matter. We address this question within the only known exactly solvable confining and chirally symmetric model. It is postulated within this model that there exists linear Coulomb-like confining interaction. The chiral symmetry breaking and the quark Green function are obtained from the Schwinger-Dyson (gap) equation while the color-singlet meson spectrum results from the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We solve this model at T=0 an…
The interaction induced chiral asymmetry is calculated in cold QED plasma beyond the weak-field approximation. By making use of the recently developed Landau-level representation for the fermion self-energy, the chiral shift and the parity-even chiral chemical potential function are obtained with the help of numerical methods. The results are used to quantify the chiral asymmetry of the Fermi surface in dense QED matter. Because of the weakness of the QED interactions, the value of the asymmetry appears to be rather small even in the strongest magnetic fields and at the highest stellar densiti…
Strong magnetic fields are commonly generated in off-central relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Lab and in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and have been used to probe the topological configurations of the QCD vacua. A strong magnetic field can affect the character and location of the QCD critical point, influence the QCD phases, and lead to anomalous transport of charge. To take advantage of the magnetic field as a probe of QCD at higher baryon densities, we are going to need experiments capable to scan the lower energy regi…
The phase structure of magnetized cold quark matter is analyzed in the framework of the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models paying special attention to its dependence on the model parameters as different values within the phenomenological allowed range are considered. We first discuss the simpler chiral limit case, and then the more realistic situation of finite current masses. We show that in spite of the difference in the nature of some transitions, both cases are alike and exhibit a rather rich phase structure for a significant range of acceptable parameters. A simplification of the phase …
Classical transport theory is used to study the response of a non-Abelian plasma at zero temperature and high chemical potential to weak color electromagnetic fields. In this article the parallelism between the transport phenomena occurring in a non-Abelian plasma at high temperature and high density is stressed. Particularly, it is shown that at high densities it is also possible to relate the transport equations to the zero-curvature condition of a Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions, even when quarks are not considered ultrarelativistic. The induced color current in the cold plasma can …
The Kondo effect is a universal phenomena observed in a variety of fermion systems containing a heavy impurity particle whose interaction is governed by the non-Abelian interaction. At extremely high density, I study the Kondo effect by color exchange in quark matter containing a single heavy (charm or bottom) quark as an impurity particle. To obtain the ground state with the Kondo effect, I introduce the condensate mixing the light quark and the heavy quark (Kondo cloud) in the mean-field approximation. I estimate the energy gain by formation of the Kondo cloud, and present that the Kondo clo…
The equation of state (EoS) for cold dense matter inside neutron stars is investigated by using holographic QCD models in the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) system and the improved Karch-Katz-Son-Stephanov (KKSS) action for matter part. This method of describing holographic nuclear matter in the EMD$+$KKSS framework is different from that by using the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action and the Chern-Simons (CS) terms. Combining with the Hebeler-Lattimer-Pethick-Schwenk (HLPS) intermediate equation of state (EoS), the hybrid EoS inside the neutron stars is constructed. The obtained…
The spectrum of meson and diquark excitations of dense cold quark matter is investigated in the framework of a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type model for light quarks of two flavors. It was found out that a first order phase transition occurs when the chemical potential $μ$ exceeds the critical value $μ_c=350$ MeV. Above $μ_c$, the diquark condensate $\vev{qq}$ forms, breaking the color symmetry of strong interaction. The masses of $π$- and $σ$-mesons are shown to grow with the chemical potential $μ$ in the color-superconducting phase, but the mesons themselves become almost stable particles due to th…
We have gone through a detailed calculation of the two-point correlation function of vector currents at finite density and magnetic field by employing the real time formalism of finite temperature field theory and Schwinger's proper time formalism. With respect to the direction of external magnetic field, the parallel and perpendicular components of electric conductivity for the degenerate relativistic fermionic matter are obtained from the zero momentum limit of the current-current correlator, owing to Kubo formula. Our quantum field theoretical expressions and numerical estimations are compa…
Yukawa theory at vanishing temperature provides (one of the ingredients for) an effective description of the thermodynamics of a variety of cold and dense fermionic systems. We study the role of masses and the renormalization group flow in the calculation of the equation of state up to two loops within the MSbar scheme. Two-loop integrals are computed analytically for arbitrary fermion and scalar masses, and expressed in terms of well-known special functions. The dependence of the renormalization group flow on the number of fermion flavors is also discussed.
Two-loop corrections for the standard Abelian Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model are obtained with the Optimized Perturbation Theory (OPT) method. These contributions improve the usual mean-field and Hartree-Fock results by generating a $1/N_c$ suppressed term, which only contributes at finite chemical potential. We take the zero temperature limit observing that, within the OPT, chiral symmetry is restored at a higher chemical potential $μ$, while the resulting equation of state is stiffer than the one obtained when mean-field is applied to the standard version of the model. In order to understand the p…
We consider quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with Nc colors and Nf quark flavors at finite quark chemical potential mu_q or isospin chemical potential mu_I. We specifically address the nature of the ``Silver Blaze'' behavior in the framework of 1/Nc expansion. Starting with the QCD partition function, we implement Veneziano's Nf/Nc expansion to identify the density onset. We find the baryon mass M_B and the pion mass m_pi appearing from different order of Veneziano's expansion. We argue that the confining properties are responsible for the Silver Blaze in the region of m_pi/2 < mu_q < M_B/Nc. We p…
