Yukawa theory at vanishing temperature provides (one of the ingredients for) an effective description of the thermodynamics of a variety of cold and dense fermionic systems. We study the role of masses and the renormalization group flow in the calculation of the equation of state up to two loops within the MSbar scheme. Two-loop integrals are computed analytically for arbitrary fermion and scalar masses, and expressed in terms of well-known special functions. The dependence of the renormalization group flow on the number of fermion flavors is also discussed.
We write down the renormalization-group equations for the Yukawa-coupling matrices in a general multi-Higgs-doublet model. We then assume that the matrices of the Yukawa couplings of the various Higgs doublets to right-handed fermions of fixed quantum numbers are all proportional to each other. We demonstrate that, in the case of the two-Higgs-doublet model, this proportionality is preserved by the renormalization-group running only in the cases of the standard type-I, II, X, and Y models. We furthermore show that a similar result holds even when there are more than two Higgs doublets: the Yuk…
We study renormalization-group flows in Yukawa theories with massless fermions, including determination of fixed points and curves that separate regions of different flow behavior. We assess the reliability of perturbative calculations for various values of Yukawa coupling $y$ and quartic scalar coupling $λ$ by comparing the properties of flows obtained with the beta functions of these couplings calculated to different orders in the loop expansion. The results provide a determination of the region in $y$ and $λ$ where calculations up to two loops can yield reasonably reliable results.
Non-perturbative D-brane instantons can generate perturbatively absent though phenomenologically relevant couplings for Type II orientifold compactifications with D-branes. We discuss the generation of the perturbatively vanishing SU(5) GUT Yukawa coupling of type 10 10 5_H. Moreover, for a simple globally consistent intersecting D6-brane model, we discuss the generation of mass terms for matter fields. This can serve as a mechanism for decoupling exotic matter.
We consider a theory of scalar and spinor fields, interacting through Yukawa and phi^4 interactions, with Lorentz-violating operators included in the Lagrangian. We compute the leading quantum corrections in this theory. The renormalizability of the theory is explicitly shown up to one-loop order. In the pure scalar sector, the calculations can be generalized to higher orders and to include finite terms, because the theory can be solved in terms of its Lorentz-invariant version.
We analyze non-perturbative corrections to the superpotential of seven-brane gauge theories on type IIB and F-theory warped Calabi-Yau compactifications. We show in particular that such corrections modify the holomorphic Yukawa couplings by an exponentially suppressed contribution, generically solving the Yukawa rank-one problem present in F-theory local models. We provide explicit expressions for the non-perturbative correction to the seven-brane superpotential, and check that it is related to a non-commutative deformation to the tree-level superpotential via the Seiberg-Witten map.
We study perturbative unitarity constraints on generic Yukawa interactions where the involved fields have arbitrary quantum numbers under an $\prod_i SU(N_i) \otimes U(1)$ group. We derive compact expressions for the bounds on the Yukawa couplings for the cases where the fields transform under the trivial, fundamental or adjoint representation of the various $SU(N)$ factors. We apply our results to specific models formulated to explain the anomalous measurements of $(g-2)_μ$ and of the charged- and neutral-current decays of the $B$ mesons. We show that, while these models can generally still e…
Local SU(5) F-theory models lead naturally to Yukawa couplings for the third generation of quarks and leptons, but inducing Yukawas for the lighter generations has proven elusive. Corrections coming from gauge fluxes fail to generate the required couplings, and naively the same applies to instanton effects. We nevertheless revisit the effect of instantons in F-theory GUT constructions and find that contributions previously ignored in the literature induce the leading non-perturbative corrections to the Yukawa couplings. We apply our results to the case of 10 x 5* x 5* couplings in local SU(5) …
By using quark Yukawa matrices only, we can construct renormalization invariants that are exact at the one-loop level in the standard model. One of them $I^q$ is accidentally consistent with unity, even though quark masses are strongly hierarchical. We calculate a lepton version of the invariant $I^l$ for Dirac and Majorana neutrino cases and find that $I^l$ can also be close to unity. For the Dirac neutrino and inverted hierarchy case, if the lightest neutrino mass is 3.0 meV to 8.8 meV, an equality $I^q=I^l$ can be satisfied. These invariants are not changed even if new particles couple to t…
We calculate the complete order y^2 and y^4 terms of the 59 x 59 one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the dimension-six operators of the Standard Model effective field theory, where y is a generic Yukawa coupling. These terms, together with the terms of order lambda, lambda^2 and lambda y^2 depending on the Standard Model Higgs self-coupling lambda which were calculated in a previous work, yield the complete one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings. The Yukawa contributions result in non-trivial flavor mixing in the various operator sectors of the Standa…
We analyze the two loop renormalization group equations in the standard model and its extensions for the coupling constants and the quark Yukawa couplings. The key point of our analysis is the observed hierarchy of the quark masses and the CKM matrix. For the one loop evolution we find the explicit solution for the evolution of the Yukawa couplings and show the following: 1. the CKM matrix depends on the energy on only one function of energy; 2. the ratios of the down quark masses depend on the energy through the same function as the CKM matrix; 3. the diagonalizing matrices of the biunitary t…
Leading Yukawa terms in the three-loop anomalous dimension and four-loop $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories for various renormalization prescriptions
We study the functional renormalization group flow of a Higgs-Yukawa toy model mimicking the top-Higgs sector of the standard model. This approach allows for treating arbitrary bare couplings. For the class of standard bare potentials of ϕ^4-type at a given ultraviolet cut-off, we show that a finite infrared Higgs mass range emerges naturally from the renormalization group flow itself. Higgs masses outside the resulting bounds cannot be connected to any conceivable set of bare parameters in this standard-model ϕ^4 class. By contrast, more general bare potentials allow to diminish the lower bou…
In the strong Yukawa coupling limit the renormalization of trilinear couplings $A_i(t)$ and combinations of the scalar particle masses $\mathfrak{M}_i^2(t)$ are studied in the framework of the Next--to--Minimal SUSY Model. The dependence of given parameters on their initial values at the Grand Unification scale disappears when the solutions of the renormalization group equations approach the infrared quasi fixed points. Besides that at $\tildeα_{\text{GUT}}\ll Y_i(0)\ll 1$ in the vicinity of quasi fixed points $A_i(t)$ and $\mathfrak{M}_i^2(t)$ concentrated near lines or surfaces in the soft S…
We consider a class of $\text{SO}(10)$ models with flavor symmetries in the Yukawa sector and investigate their viability by performing numerical fits to the fermion masses and mixing parameters. The fitting procedure involves a top-down approach in which we solve the renormalization group equations from the scale of grand unification down to the electroweak scale. This allows the intermediate scale right-handed neutrinos and scalar triplet, involved in the type I and II seesaw mechanisms, to be integrated out at their corresponding mass scales, leading to a correct renormalization group runni…
We confront the perturbativity problem in the real scalar quintuplet minimal dark matter model. In the original model, the quintuplet quartic self-coupling inevitably hits a Landau pole at a scale $\sim 10^{14}$ GeV, far below the Planck scale. In order to push up this Landau pole scale, we extend the model with a fermionic quintuplet and three fermionic singlets which couple to the scalar quintuplet via Yukawa interactions. Involving such Yukawa interactions at a scale $\sim 10^{10}$ GeV can not only keep all couplings perturbative up to the Planck scale, but can also explain the smallness of…
We investigate the effects of Yukawa couplings on the phenomenological predictions for a class of supersymmetric models which allows for the presence of complete SU(5) multiplets in addition to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model spectrum. We develop a two loop analytical approach to quantify the predictions for gauge unification including Yukawa couplings. The effects of the heavy thresholds of the model are also included. In some cases accurate predictions can be made for the unification scale, irrespective of the initial (unknown) Yukawa couplings, so long as perturbation theory remai…
We obtain analytic, nonperturbative, approximate solutions of Yukawa theory in the one-fermion sector using light-front quantization. The theory is regulated in the ultraviolet by the introduction of heavy Pauli-Villars scalar and fermion fields, each with negative norm. In order to obtain a directly soluble problem, fermion-pair creation and annihilation are neglected, and the number of bosonic constituents is limited to one of either type. We discuss some of the features of the wave function of the eigensolution, including its endpoint behavior and spin and orbital angular momentum content. …

If the scale dependence of a Yukawa matrix is assumed to be determined entirely by the dominant 33-element, then the renormalization group equations can be expressed in terms of two separate equations: a differential equation for the 33-coupling, and, an algebraic equation for the scale-independent 3x3 matrix that is found to have only two non-trivial, hierarchical, solutions with eigenvalues (0,0,1) and (0,1,1). The mass matrices are constructed from these solutions by rotating them first by the experimentally known mixing matrices-the CKM for quarks and charged leptons, and the CKM-analog fo…
We test the renormalization group procedure for effective particles (RGPEP) on a model of fermion-scalar interaction based on the Yukawa theory. The model is obtained by truncating the Yukawa theory to just two Fock sectors in the Dirac front form of Hamiltonian dynamics, a fermion, and a fermion and a boson, for the purpose of simple analytic calculation that exhibits steps of the procedure.
The considerable part of the parameter space in the MSSM corresponding to the infrared quasi fixed point scenario is excluded by LEP II bounds on the lightest Higgs boson mass. In the NMSSM the mass of the lightest Higgs boson reaches its maximum value in the strong Yukawa coupling limit when Yukawa couplings are essentially larger than gauge ones at the Grand Unification scale. In this case the renormalization group flow of Yukawa couplings and soft SUSY breaking terms is investigated. The quasi-fixed and invariant lines and surfaces are briefly discussed. The coordinates of the quasi-fixed p…
We study the renormalization group evolution and infra-red stable fixed points of the Yukawa couplings and the soft supersymmetry breaking trilinear couplings of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with baryon and lepton number (and R-parity) violation involving the heaviest generations. We show analytically that in the Yukawa sector there is only one infra-red stable fixed point. This corresponds to non-trivial fixed point for the top-, bottom-quark Yukawa couplings and the $B$ violating coupling $λ_{233}''$, and a trivial one for the $τ$-Yukawa coupling. All other possible fixed points…
In the Standard Model with four generations, the two-loop renormalization group equations for the Higgs quartic and Yukawa couplings have a fixed point structure. If the masses of the fourth family are sufficiently heavy, it will contain a natural scale $Λ_{FP}$ in the range of a few TeV to the order of $10^2$ TeV, above which the Higgs quartic and Yukawa couplings become practically constant. We found that around $Λ_{FP}$ the strong Yukawa couplings make it possible for the fourth generation to form bound states, including composite extra Higgs doublets. In this scenario the fourth generation…
We propose a new paradigm for generating exponentially spread standard model Yukawa couplings from a new $U(1)_F$ gauge symmetry in the dark sector. Chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken among dark fermions that obtain non-vanishing masses from a non-perturbative solution to the mass gap equation. The necessary ingredient for this mechanism to work is the existence of higher derivative terms in the dark $U(1)_F$ theory, or equivalently the existence of Lee-Wick ghosts, that (i) allow for a non-perturbative solution to the mass gap equation in the weak coupling regime of the Abelian theory; (…
The Type-I seesaw model is a common extension to the Standard Model that describes neutrino masses. The Type-I seesaw introduces heavy right-handed neutrinos with Majorana mass that transform as Standard Model electroweak gauge singlets. We initially study a case with two right-handed neutrinos called the 3-2 model. At an energy scale above the right-handed neutrinos, the effective neutrino mass matrix is rank degenerate implying the lightest neutrino is massless. After considering renormalization effects below the two right-handed neutrinos, the effective neutrino mass matrix remains rank deg…
We consider a model with arbitrary numbers of Majorana fermion fields and real scalar fields $φ_a$, general Yukawa couplings and a $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry that forbids linear and trilinear terms in the scalar potential. Moreover, fermions become massive only after spontaneous symmetry breaking of the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry by vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the $φ_a$. Introducing the shifted fields $h_a$ whose VEVs vanish, $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ renormalization of the parameters of the unbroken theory suffices to make the theory finite. However, in this way, beyond tree level it is necess…
We study Schwinger-Dyson equation for fermions in Yukawa and Wess-Zumino models, in terms of dynamical mass generation and the wavefunction renormalization function. In the Yukawa model with $γ_5$-type interaction between scalars and fermions, we find a critical coupling in the quenched approximation above which fermions acquire dynamical mass. This is shown to be true beyond the bare 3-point vertex approximation. In the Wess-Zumino model, there is a neat cancellation of terms leading to no dynamical mass for fermions. We comment on the conditions under which these results are general beyond t…
We discuss whether the bi-maximal mixing given at GUT is consistent with the solar mixing at the normal side at the low energy. We consider the radiative corrections due to the tau-Yukawa, the neutrino-Yukawa and the slepton threshold corrections and discuss in what situation the maximal solar angle rotates towards the normal side. In this scheme, the |V_{13}| and the Dirac CP phase delta are induced radiatively and we estimate these values.
We investigate the renormalization group flow of the field-dependent Yukawa coupling in the framework of the three flavor quark-meson model. In a conventional perturbative calculation, given that the field rescaling is trivial, the Yukawa coupling does not get renormalized at the one-loop level if it is coupled to an equal number of scalar and pseudoscalar fields. Its field-dependent version, however, does flow with respect to the scale. Using the functional renormalization group technique, we show that it is highly nontrivial how to extract the actual flow of the Yukawa coupling as there are …
We present a coherent and operational strategy to calculate, in a nonperturbative way, physical observables in light-front dynamics. This strategy is based on the decomposition of the state vector of any compound system in Fock components, and on the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, together with the so-called Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme. We apply our approach to the calculation of the electromagnetic form factors of a fermion in the Yukawa model, in the nontrivial three-body Fock space truncation, for rather large values of the coupling constant. We find that, o…
The evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are derived for the one-loop renormalization group equations in the two Universal Extra Dimension Models (UED), that is six-dimensional models, compactified in different possible ways to yield standard four space-time dimension. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, such as the case of bulk propagating or localised brane fields. We discuss in both cases the evolution of the Yukawa couplings, the Jarlskog parameter and the CKM matrix elements, and we find that, for both scenarios, as we run up to the unific…
We study the renormalization flow of the Higgs potential as a function of both field amplitude and energy scale. This overcomes limitations of conventional techniques that rely, e.g., on an identification of field amplitude and RG scale, or on local field expansions. Using a Higgs-Yukawa model with discrete chiral symmetry as an example, our global flows in field space clarify the origin of possible meta-stabilities, the fate of the pseudo-stable phase, and provide new information about the renormalization of the tunnel barrier. Our results confirm the relaxation of the lower bound for the Hig…
The notion of non-perturbative renormalization is discussed and extended. Within the extended picture, a new non-perturbative representation for the generating functional of Green functions of quantum field theories is suggested. It is argued that the new expression agrees with the standard renormalized perturbation theory if the latter is renormalized in an appropriate renormalization scheme.
Perturbative unification of soft supersymmetry--breaking (SSB) parameters is proposed in Gauge-Yukawa unified models. The method, which can be applied in any finite order in perturbation theory, consists in searching for renormalization group invariant relations among the SSB parameters, which are consistent with perturbative renormalizability. For the minimal Gauge-Yukawa unified model based on $SU(5)$ we find that the low energy SSB sector contains a single arbitrary parameter, the unified gaugino mass. Within a certain approximation we find that the model predicts a superpartner spectrum wh…
Effective field theory provides a new perspective on the predictive power of Renormalization Group fixed points. Critical trajectories between different fixed points confine the regions of UV-complete, IR-complete, as well as conformal theories. The associated boundary surfaces cannot be crossed by the Renormalization Group flow of any effective field theory. We delineate cases in which the boundary surface acts as an infrared attractor for generic effective field theories. Gauge-Yukawa theories serve as an example that is both perturbative and of direct phenomenological interest. We identify …
We study realization of the democratic form of Yukawa matrices by infrared fixed points. We investigate renormalization-group flows of Yukawa couplings in models with a single Yukawa matrix for three families, and up and down-sector Yukawa matrices. It is found that each model has its certain pattern of renormalization-group flows of Yukawa matrices. We apply them to the charged lepton sector and quark sector, and show that realistic results for the second and third families are obtained with natural initial conditions, e.g. $(V_{MNS})_{23} \sim 2/\sqrt{6}$, $m_s/m_b \sim V_{cb} \sim m_μ/m_τ$ …
In completely generic four-dimensional gauge-Yukawa theories, the renormalization group $ β$-functions are known to the 3-2-2 loop order in gauge, Yukawa, and quartic couplings, respectively. It does, however, remain difficult to apply these results to specific models without the use of dedicated computer tools. We describe a procedure for extracting $ β$-functions using the general results and introduce RGBeta, a dedicated Mathematica package for extracting the $ \overline{\text{MS}} $ $ β$-functions in broad classes of models. The package and example notebooks are available from the GitHub r…
The evolution properties of Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are performed for the one-loop renormalization group equations in the Universal Extra Dimension (UED) model. It is found that the UED model has a substantial effect on the scaling of the fermion masses, including both quark and lepton sectors, whilst the radiative effects on the unitarity triangle is not a sensitive test in this model. Also, for this model, the renormalization invariants $R_{13}$ and $R_{23}$ describe the correlation between the mixing angles and mass ratios to a good approximation, with a variation of the order of…
The dynamics at the IR fixed point realized in the $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories with massless Dirac fermions is studied by means of the non-perturbative renormalization group. The analysis includes the IR fixed points with non-trivial Yukawa couplings. The renormalization properties of the scalar field are also discussed and it is shown that hierarchical mass scale may be allowed without intense fine-tuning due to a large anomalous dimension.
A short survey of the renormalization problem in QCD and its non-perturbative solution by means of numerical simulations on the lattice is given. Most emphasis is on scale dependent renormalizations, which can be reliably addressed via a recursive finite-size scaling procedure employing a suitable intermediate renormalization scheme. To illustrate these concepts we discuss some - partly recent - computations of phenomenologically relevant quantities: the running QCD gauge coupling, renormalization group invariant quark masses and the renormalization of the static-light axial current.
The results for the three-loop renormalization group equations for all fundamental parameters of the SM Lagrangian are presented. Special attention is paid to the Flavor sector of the SM, which parameterized by general complex non-diagonal Yukawa couplings. Some details of calculation techniques are given. In addition, ambiguities in the beta-functions for the matrix couplings are discussed.
We provide a renormalization procedure for Phi-derivable approximations in theories coupling different types of fields. We illustrate our approach on a scalar phi^4 theory coupled to fermions via a Yukawa-like interaction. The non-perturbative renormalization amounts to fixing the scalar coupling via a set of nested Bethe-Salpeter equations coupling fermions to scalars.
The renormalization group equations (RGEs) of the mass matrices of quarks and leptons in a SO(10) model with two Higgs scalars in the Yukawa coupling are studied. This model is the minimal model of SUSY and non-SUSY SO(10) GUT which can reproduce all the experimental data. Non-SUSY SO(10) GUT model has the intermediate energy phase, Pati-Salam phase, and passes through the symmetry breaking pattern, $SO(10) \to SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times SU(4)_C \to SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times SU(3)_C$. Though minimal, it has, after the Pati-Salam phase, four Higgs doublets in Yukawa interactions. We consi…
In these lectures, we discuss different types of renormalization problems in QCD and their non-perturbative solution in the framework of the lattice formulation. In particular the recursive finite size methods to compute the scale-dependence of renormalized quantities is explained. An important ingredient in the practical applications is the Schrödinger functional. It is introduced and its renormalization properties are discussed. Concerning applications, the computation of the running coupling and the running quark mass are covered in detail and it is shown how the $Λ$-parameter and renormali…
Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model generally give a theoretical upper limit on the lightest Higgs boson mass which may be uncomfortably close to the current experimental lower bound of $m_h$ > 114 GeV. Here we show ways in which this upper limit on $m_h$ can be relaxed substantially in the perturbative regime, while maintaining the successful unification of gauge couplings as observed in the minimal scenario. A class of models is presented, which includes new vector-like matter with the quantum numbers of the 5, 5-bar and singlet representations of SU(5) and having Yukawa coupling…
We analysis the constraints of the general two Higgs doublet models via evolving the Yukawa coupling constants to high energy under renormalization group. We consider the appearance of a Landau pole or large off-diagonal Yukawa couplings which cause tree level flavour changing neutral currents. Our study shows the latter condition can be used to answer that how much $Z_2$ symmetry breaking can be allowed in a given 2HDM model.
The goal of this paper is two-fold. The first aim is to present a detailed version of the computation of the two-loop renormalization of the magnetic coupling in hot QCD. The second is to compare with lattice simulations the string tension of a spatial Wilson loop using the result of our two-loop computation
We formulate a general scheme to improve the truncated perturbative expansion in alpha_s by means of the renormalization group in QCD for the single-scale quantities. The procedure is used for the evaluation of hadronic decay rates of tau-lepton and eta_c-charmonium. The scale dependence of result for eta_c is studied in the scheme of fixed value for the MS-bar mass of charmed quark.
We investigate the impact of extra vector-like GUT multiplets on the predicted value of the strong coupling. We find in particular that Yukawa couplings between such extra multiplets and the MSSM Higgs doublets can resolve the familiar two-loop discrepancy between the SUSY GUT prediction and the measured value of alpha_3. Our analysis highlights the advantages of the holomorphic scheme, where the perturbative running of gauge couplings is saturated at one loop and further corrections are conveniently described in terms of wavefunction renormalization factors. If the gauge couplings as well as …
We perform a non-perturbative study of the scale-dependent renormalization factors of a multiplicatively renormalizable basis of $Δ{B}=2$ parity-odd four-fermion operators in quenched lattice QCD. Heavy quarks are treated in the static approximation with various lattice discretizations of the static action. Light quarks are described by non-perturbatively ${\rm O}(a)$ improved Wilson-type fermions. The renormalization group running is computed for a family of Schroedinger functional (SF) schemes through finite volume techniques in the continuum limit. We compute non-perturbatively the relation…
Renormalization of Hamiltonian field theory is usually a rather painful algebraic or numerical exercise. By combining a method based on the coupled cluster method, analysed in detail by Suzuki and Okamoto, with a Wilsonian approach to renormalization, we show that a powerful and elegant method exist to solve such problems. The method is in principle non-perturbative, and is not necessarily unitary.
The constraint of a progressive decrease in residual renormalization scale dependence with increasing loop order is developed as a method for obtaining bounds on unknown higher-order perturbative corrections to renormalization-group invariant quantities. This technique is applied to the inclusive semileptonic process $b\to u \barν_\ell\ell^-$ (explicitly known to two-loop order) to obtain bounds on the three- and four-loop perturbative coefficients that are not accessible via the renormalization group. Using the principle of minimal sensitivity, an estimate is obtained for the perturbative con…
We analyze the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which is a chiral effective model of QCD by using the non-perturbative renormalization group at finite temperature and finite density. We discuss the chiral phase diagram in the model. We include the large-$N$ non-leading contribution in the beta function and discuss its effects for the phase boundary.
