We investigate the renormalization group flow of the field-dependent Yukawa coupling in the framework of the three flavor quark-meson model. In a conventional perturbative calculation, given that the field rescaling is trivial, the Yukawa coupling does not get renormalized at the one-loop level if it is coupled to an equal number of scalar and pseudoscalar fields. Its field-dependent version, however, does flow with respect to the scale. Using the functional renormalization group technique, we show that it is highly nontrivial how to extract the actual flow of the Yukawa coupling as there are several new chirally invariant operators that get generated by quantum fluctuations in the effective action, which need to be distinguished from that of the Yukawa interaction.
We study the origin of fermion mass hierarchy and flavor mixing in the standard model, paying attention to flavor symmetries and fermion kinetic terms. There is a possibility that the hierarchical flavor structure of quarks and charged leptons originates from non-canonical types of fermion kinetic terms in the presence of flavor symmetric Yukawa interactions. A flavor symmetry can be hidden in the form of non-unitary bases in the standard model. The structure of Kähler potential can become a touchstone of new physics.
We present a modified version of the Koide formula from a scalar potential model or from a Yukawaon model, based on scalar fields set up in a nonet representation of the SU(3) flavor symmetry in the Standard Model. The Koide's character, which involves the Standard Model fermion mass ratios, is derived from the vacuum expectation value of the nonet field in either model. The scalar potential in the scalar potential model or the superpotential in the Yukawaon model is constructed with all terms invariant under symmetries. The resulting Koide's character, which is modified by two effective param…
From general analyticity and unitarity requirements on the UV theory, positivity bounds on the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-8 operators composed of 4 fermions and two derivatives appearing in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory have been derived recently. We explore the fate of these bounds in the context of models endowed with a Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) structure, models in which the flavor structure of higher dimensional operators is inherited from the one already contained in the Yukawa sector of the Standard Model Lagrangian. Our goal is to check whether the general pos…
We study the minimal flavor violation in the context of string effective field theory. Stringy selection rules indicate that $n$-point couplings among fermionic zero-modes and lightest scalar modes in the string effective action are given by a product of Yukawa couplings which are regarded as spurion fields of stringy and geometrical symmetries. Hence, Yukawa couplings determine the dynamics of flavor and CP violations. This observation strongly supports the hypothesis of minimal flavor violation in the Standard Model effective field theory.
Light is shed on the early stage in the birth of Yukawa's meson theory, particularly on the interplay between Yukawa and Tomonaga in 1933. The discovery of the muon by Nishina' group in 1937 is also reviewed. It is pointed out that Heisenberg's attempt to explain the nuclear force in terms of the Heitler-London scheme, overcome by Yukawa and abandoned since then, is now being revived as a mechanism for a super strong nuclear force caused by a migrating real Kbar meson.
We analyze the scalar lepton mass matrices in a supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified model with soft SUSY breaking terms generated at Planck scale and a Georgi-Jarslkog Yukawa texture at GUT scale induced by higher dimensional operators. This model predicts lepton flavor violation. The predictive features of the Georgi-Jarlskog texture are used to estimate branching ratios for the radiative decays $e_{a} \rightarrow e_{b}+γ,$ and we find rates that could provide an experimental test for this kind of model.
We investigate lepton flavor violation in the context of intersecting D-brane models. We point out that these models have a source to generate flavor violation in the trilinear scalar couplings while the geometry of the construction leads to degenerate soft scalar masses for different generations (as in the minimal supergravity model) at the string scale. The trilinear scalar couplings are not proportional to the Yukawa couplings when the F-term of the U-moduli contribution is non-zero. Consequently, the lepton flavor violating decay processes are generated. Only other sources of flavor violat…
We study flavor violating processes in the production or decay of a neutral pseudoscalar meson $P^0$ in the framework of a general two Higgs Doublet Model type III (2HDM-III). We use a version of the model where Yukawa interactions of neutral Higgs bosons allow for flavor change at the tree-level, but conserves CP symmetry. We focus on all possible $τ^{\pm} \to l^{\pm}P^0 $ and $P^0 \to l^+l'^-$ decay channels, where $l,l'$ are charged leptons. We find that these processes provide complementary information on quark and lepton FCNC Yukawa couplings. In particular flavor violating parameters in …
We study the charged Higgs couplings to fermions in the "democratic" three-Higgs-doublet model, in which one doublet couples to down-type quarks, one to up-type quarks, and one to charged leptons. Flavor-changing neutral Higgs couplings are absent because the Glashow-Weinberg-Paschos condition for natural flavor conservation is in effect. We show that this model reproduces the coupling structure of the charged Higgs boson in the recently-proposed Yukawa-aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, with two subtle constraints that arise from the unitarity of the charged Higgs mixing matrix. Adding a fourth…
We present a class of warped extra dimensional models whose flavor violating interactions are much suppressed compared to the usual anarchic case due to flavor alignment. Such suppression can be achieved in models where part of the global flavor symmetry is gauged in the bulk and broken in a controlled manner. We show that the bulk masses can be aligned with the down type Yukawa couplings by an appropriate choice of bulk flavon field representations and TeV brane dynamics. This alignment could reduce the flavor violating effects to levels which allow for a Kaluza-Klein scale as low as 2-3 TeV,…
We examine contributions from Majorana phases to lepton flavor violating processes in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with heavy right-handed neutrinos. All phases in the complex neutrino Yukawa matrix are taken into account in our study. We find that in the scenario with universal soft-breaking terms sizable phase effects can appear on the lepton flavor violating processes such as $μ\to e γ$, $τ\to e γ$, and $τ\to μγ$. In particular, the branching ratio of $μ\to e γ$ can be considerably enhanced due to the Majorana phases, so that it can be much greater than that of…
Assuming a diagonal Majorana neutrino mass matrix, we investigate the neutrino Yukawa textures which lead to a non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$. The neutrino effective coupling matrix $κ^{eff}$ is pre-diagonalized by a constant mixing pattern $V_ν$ with a vanishing $θ^ν_{13}$. The resulting pre-diagonal symmetrical matrix $κ$ is set to be four texture zeros with two types of off-diagonal elements nonzero, which is $κ_{13}$ and $κ_{23}$, respectively. With the expectation of simple textures we thoroughly classify the linear combinations, $α_{i}$, $β_{i}$ and $γ_{i}$ of Yukawa elements $λ_…
We present a supersymmetric SU(5) x U(1)_H model, free from gauge anomalies, where the Abelian factor U(1)_H, introduced to account for the hierarchy of fermion masses and mixings, is broken by the same adjoint representations of SU(5) that also break the GUT symmetry. The model predicts approximate, but never exact, bottom-tau Yukawa unification. The deviations are related to group theoretical coefficients and can naturally be at the level of 10%-20%.
We present a new constraint on a lepton mixing matrix $V$ from lepton-flavor violating (LFV) processes in supersymmetric standard models with massive neutrinos. Here, we assume Yukawa-coupling unification $f_{ν3}\simeq f_{\rm top}$, in which $τ$-neutrino Yukawa coupling $f_{ν3}$ is unified into top-quark Yukawa coupling $f_{\rm top}$ at the unification scale $M_*\simeq 3\times 10^{16}$ GeV. We show that the present experimental bound on $μ\to e γ$ decay already gives a stringent limit on the lepton mixing (typically $V_{13}<0.02$ for $V_{23}=1/\sqrt{2}$). Therefore, many existing neutrino-mass…
In the type I + II seesaw formula the mass matrix of light neutrinos m_nu receives contributions from the exchanges of both heavy Majorana neutrinos and SU(2)_L-triplet Higgs bosons. We propose a new parameterization for the Dirac-type Yukawa coupling matrix of neutrinos in this case, which generalizes the well known Casas-Ibarra parameterization to type I + II seesaw and is useful when the triplet term in m_nu is known. Neutrino masses and mixing, lepton flavor violation in decays like mu -> e γwithin mSUGRA models and leptogenesis can then be studied within this framework. We illustrate the …
We reconsider the flavor problem in the models with two Higgs doublets. By studying two generation toy models, we look for flavor basis independent constraints on Yukawa couplings that will give us the mass hierarchy while keeping all Yukawa couplings of the same order. We then generalize our findings to the full three generation Standard Model. We find that we need two constraints on the Yukawa couplings to generate the observed mass hierarchy, and a slight tuning of Yukawa couplings of order 10%, much less than the Standard Model. We briefly study how these constraints can be realized, and s…
F-theory is one of frameworks in string theory where supersymmetric grand unification is accommodated, and all the Yukawa couplings and Majorana masses of right-handed neutrinos are generated. Yukawa couplings of charged fermions are generated at codimension-3 singularities, and a contribution from a given singularity point is known to be approximately rank 1. Thus, the approximate rank of Yukawa matrices in low-energy effective theory of generic F-theory compactifications are minimum of either the number of generations N_gen = 3 or the number of singularity points of certain types. If there i…
We study flavor structure and the coupling selection rule in intersecting D-brane configurations. We formulate the selection rule for Yukawa couplings and its extensions to generic n-point couplings. We investigate the possible flavor structure, which can appear from intersecting D-brane configuration, and it is found that their couplings are determined by discrete abelian symmetry. Our studies on the flavor structure and the coupling selection rule show that the minimal matter content of the supersymmetric standard model would have difficulty to derive realistic Yukawa matrices from stringy 3…
The scotogenic model is well known for accommodating small neutrino mass and dark matter. Here, we have realized the scotogenic model with the help of discrete flavor symmetry $A_{4}\otimes Z_{4}$. We have obtained three one zero textures of Yukawa coupling matrices from the model and have studied its impact on neutrino phenomenology and related aspects of cosmology. On the basis of $μ-τ$ symmetry, we have further discarded two structures of one zero texture Yukawa coupling matrix. We further analyze if the effective mass of active neutrinos obtained by the virtue of the Yukawa coupling matrix…
The basic features of quark and lepton mass matrices can be successfully explained by natural minima of a generic potential with dynamical Yukawa fields invariant under the $[\mathrm{SU(3)}]^5\times \mathcal{O}(3)$ flavor symmetry. If this symmetry is gauged, in order to avoid potentially dangerous Goldstone bosons, and small perturbations are added to exactly fit the observed pattern of fermion masses, the spectrum of massive flavor gauge bosons can naturally explain the hints for new physics in $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ transitions, including $R_K$. In particular, the desired pattern of the Stan…
We present a new mechanism, which does not require any flavor symmetry, to explain the small Yukawa couplings and CKM mixing angles. The Yukawa matrices are assumed to be random at short distances and the hierarchical structure is generated in the infrared by renormalization group flow. The generic qualitative predictions of this mechanism are in good agreement with observation. We give several simple examples in supersymmetric theories. We show that our mechanism can also ameliorate the supersymmetric flavor problem, and make predictions for the superpartner mass spectrum. The mechanism is fu…
We use the holographic dual of a finite-temperature, strongly-coupled, gauge theory with a small number of flavors of massive fundamental quarks to study meson excitations and deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in the low-temperature phase, where the mesons are stable. We show that a high-energy flavor current with nearly light-like kinematics disappears into the plasma by resonantly producing mesons in highly excited states. This mechanism generates the same DIS structure functions as in the high temperature phase, where mesons are unstable and the current disappears through medium-induced parto…
We discuss what kinds of combinations of Yukawa interactions can generate the Majorana neutrino mass matrix. We concentrate on the flavor structure of the neutrino mass matrix because it does not depend on details of the models except for Yukawa interactions while determination of the overall scale of the mass matrix requires to specify also the scalar potential and masses of new particles. Thus, models to generate Majorana neutrino mass matrix can be efficiently classified according to the combination of Yukawa interactions. We first investigate the case where Yukawa interactions with only le…
To explain the observed muon anomaly and simultaneously evade bounds from lepton flavor violation in the same model parameter space is a long cherished dream. In view of a generalized Two Higgs Doublet Model, with a Yukawa structure as a perturbation of Type-X, we are able to get substantial parameter space satisfying this criteria. We are focusing on a region with "{\bf wrong-sign}" lepton-Yukawa coupling which gives rise to an interesting phenomenological consequences. We found that in the "wrong-sign" region, it is possible to probe the low-mass pseudoscalar in flavor-violating decay mode w…
In a large class of supersymmetric SO(10) and left-right models, requiring that the effective theory below the scale of $SU(2)_R$ breaking be the MSSM implies partial Yukawa unification with $Y_u=Y_d$ and $Y_e=Y_{ν^D}$. The same result also emerges in models with a horizontal $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. As a result, at the tree level, these models lead to vanishing quark mixing angles. We show that the correct mixing pattern can be generated in these models at the loop level from the flavor structure associated with the supersymmetry breaking terms. We generalize the constraints on supersymmetric para…
Various lepton-flavor violating (LFV) processes in the supersymmetric standard model with right-handed neutrino supermultiplets are investigated in detail. It is shown that large LFV rates are obtained when $\tan β$ is large. In the case where the mixing matrix in the lepton sector has a similar structure as the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and the third-generation Yukawa coupling is as large as that of the top quark, the branching ratios can be as large as $Br(μ\rightarrow eγ)\simeq 10^{-11}$ and $Br(τ\rightarrowμγ)\simeq 10^{-7}$, which are within the reach of future experiments. If we assume a …
We discuss lepton flavor violation (LFV) associated with tau leptons in the general framework of the two Higgs doublet model, in which LFV couplings are introduced as a deviation from Model II Yukawa interaction. Parameters of the model are constrained from experimental results and also from requirements of theoretical consistencies such as vacuum stability and perturbative unitarity. Current data for LFV rare tau decays provide substantial upper limits on the LFV Yukawa couplings in the large $\tanβ$ region, which are comparable with predictions in fundamental theories. Here $\tanβ$ is the ra…
Recently, Dymarsky, Kuperstein and Sonnenschein constructed an embedding of flavor D7- and anti-D7-branes in the Klebanov-Strassler geometry that breaks the supersymmetry of the background, yet is stable. In this article, we study in detail the spectrum of vector mesons in this new model of flavor chiral symmetry breaking and commence an analytical analysis of the scalar mesons in this setup.
In this paper we preform a systematic study of the tau flavored dark matter model by introducing two kinds of mediators (a scalar doublet and a charged scalar singlet). The electromagnetic properties of the dark matter, as well as their implications in dark matter direct detections, are analyzed in detail. The model turns out contributing a significant radiative correction to the tau lepton mass, in addition to loosing the tension between the measured dark matter relic density and constraints of dark matter direct detections. The loop corrections can be ${\cal O}(10\%)$ of the total tau mass. …
Integration of superpartners out of the spectrum induces potentially large contributions to Yukawa couplings. These corrections, the supersymmetric threshold corrections, therefore influence the CKM matrix prediction in a non-trivial way. We study effects of threshold corrections on high-scale flavor structures specified at the gauge coupling unification scale in supersymmetry. In our analysis, we first consider high-scale Yukawa textures which qualify phenomenologically viable at tree level, and find that they get completely disqualified after incorporating the threshold corrections. Next, we…
The evolution properties of Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are performed for the one-loop renormalization group equations in the Universal Extra Dimension (UED) model. It is found that the UED model has a substantial effect on the scaling of the fermion masses, including both quark and lepton sectors, whilst the radiative effects on the unitarity triangle is not a sensitive test in this model. Also, for this model, the renormalization invariants $R_{13}$ and $R_{23}$ describe the correlation between the mixing angles and mass ratios to a good approximation, with a variation of the order of…
Can the cosmological dynamics responsible for settling down the present values of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix be related to electroweak symmetry breaking? If the Standard Model Yukawa couplings varied in the early universe and started with order one values before electroweak symmetry breaking, the CP violation associated with the CKM matrix could be the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry. The large effective Yukawa couplings which lead to the enhanced CP violation can also help in achieving a strong first-order electroweak phase transition. We study in detail the feasibility of…
We discuss the flavor structure of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in 5-dimensional orbifold field theories in which N=1 supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz boundary condition and hierarchical 4-dimensional Yukawa couplings are obtained by quasi-localizing the matter fields in extra dimension. In such theories, the resulting soft scalar masses and trilinear scalar couplings at the compactification scale are highly flavor-dependent, but appropriately suppressed in correlation with Yukawa couplings. Those flavor violations can give interesting phenomenological consequences at lo…
The new round of experiments, MEG II, COMET/Mu2e, and Mu3e, would soon start to push the $μ\to eγ$, $μN \to eN$ conversion, and $μ\to 3e$ frontier, while Belle II would probe $τ\to μγ$ and $τ\to 3μ$. In the general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings, we show that all these processes probe the lepton flavor violating (LFV) dipole transition that arises from the two loop mechanism, with scalar-induced contact terms subdominant. This is because existing data suggest the extra Yukawa couplings $ρ_{μe},\, ρ_{ee} \lesssim λ_e$, while $ρ_{τμ},\, ρ_{ττ} \lesssim λ_τ$ and $ρ_{tt} \less…
We consider constraints from flavor physics on two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDM) with general, flavor-diagonal, Yukawa couplings. Analyzing the charged Higgs contribution to different observables, we find that $b\to sγ$ transitions and $ΔM_{B_d}$ restrict the coupling $λ_{tt}$ of the top quark (corresponding to $\cotβ$ in models with a $Z_2$ symmetry) to $|λ_{tt}|<1$ for $m_{H^+}\lesssim 500$ GeV. Stringent constraints from $B$ meson decays are obtained also on the other third generation couplings $λ_{bb}$ and $λ_{ττ}$, but with stronger dependence on $m_{H^+}$. For the second generation, we obt…
We present a model of fermion masses based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry that reproduces the Yukawa matrices usually associated with U(2) theories of flavor. Mass and mixing angle relations that follow from the simple form of the quark and charged lepton Yukawa textures are therefore common to both theories. We show that the differing representation structure of our horizontal symmetry allows for new solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems that do not involve modification of the original charged fermion Yukawa textures, or the introduction of sterile neutrinos.
We consider a class of $\text{SO}(10)$ models with flavor symmetries in the Yukawa sector and investigate their viability by performing numerical fits to the fermion masses and mixing parameters. The fitting procedure involves a top-down approach in which we solve the renormalization group equations from the scale of grand unification down to the electroweak scale. This allows the intermediate scale right-handed neutrinos and scalar triplet, involved in the type I and II seesaw mechanisms, to be integrated out at their corresponding mass scales, leading to a correct renormalization group runni…
We classify models of the Dirac neutrino mass by concentrating on flavor structures of the mass matrix. The advantage of our classification is that we do not need to specify detail of models except for Yukawa interactions because flavor structures can be given only by products of Yukawa matrices. All possible Yukawa interactions between leptons (including the right-handed neutrino) are taken into account by introducing appropriate scalar fields. We also take into account the case with Yukawa interactions of leptons with the dark matter candidate. Then, we see that flavor structures can be clas…
We explore the possibility that the observed pattern of quark masses is the consequence of a statistical distribution of Yukawa couplings within the multiverse. We employ the anthropic condition that only two ultra light quarks exist, justifying the observed richness of organic chemistry. Moreover, the mass of the recently discovered Higgs boson suggests that the top Yukawa coupling lies near the critical condition where the electroweak vacuum becomes unstable, leading to a new kind of flavor puzzle and to a new anthropic condition. We scan Yukawa couplings according to distributions motivated…
We propose a new framework for the observed flavor hierarchy and mixing based on left-right supersymmetry. The model contains the most minimal Higgs sector consisting only of gauge doublets which forbid the standard model Yukawa couplings. New mediator fields then connect the left- and right-chiral fermion sectors and result in effective tree level Yukawa couplings for the third generation charged fermions. The remaining fermions, including all neutrinos, acquire effective Yukawa couplings sourced by the supersymmetry breaking sector at loop level. We predict new TeV range scalars, as well as …
In this letter, we consider an idea that induces flavor structure from inner products in noncommutative geometry. Assuming proper components of vectors $v_{(L,R) i}$ in enlarged representation space for fermions, we can induce the waterfall texture for Yukawa matrices retaining gauge interactions are universal. The hierarchy of the Yukawa interactions is a consequence of "misalignment" between the vectors $v_{Li}$ and $v_{Rj}$.
We analyze the advantages of a linear-collider program for testing a recent theoretical proposal where the Higgs-boson Yukawa couplings are radiatively generated, keeping unchanged the standard-model mechanism for electroweak-gauge-symmetry breaking. Fermion masses arise at a large energy scale through an unknown mechanism, and the standard model at the electroweak scale is regarded as an effective field theory. In this scenario, Higgs boson decays into photons and electroweak gauge-boson pairs are considerably enhanced for a light Higgs boson, which makes a signal observation at the LHC strai…
The spontaneous breaking of the $SU(3)^5$ quark/lepton flavor symmetry by means of three multiplets of scalar `Yukawa fields' admits vacua with one O(1) and two vanishing vacuum expectation values (vevs) for each multiplet. If the number of generations is equal to three, and only in this case, the vanishing vevs are lifted to exponentially suppressed entries by the inclusion of symmetry invariant logarithmic terms. A strong hierarchy for the Yukawa couplings and a quark mixing matrix that approaches a diagonal form are obtained in a natural way from O(1) parameters. This scenario provides a co…
To address fermion mass hierarchy and flavor mixings in the quark and lepton sectors, a minimal flavor structure without any redundant parameters beyond phenomenological observables is proposed via decomposition of the Standard Model Yukawa mass matrix into a bi-unitary form. After reviewing the roles and parameterization of the factorized matrix ${\bf M}_0^f$ and ${\bf F}_L^f$ in fermion masses and mixings, we generalize the mechanism to up- and down-type fermions to unify them into a universal quark/lepton Yukawa interaction. In the same way, a unified form of the description of the quark an…
CP violation can be observed in B decays when a given process depends upon interference between two weak amplitudes which have different $CP$-violating phases. Since most weak decay diagrams have quark lines where each has a definite flavor label, neutral mesons which are flavor mixtures are particularly interesting. Different diagrams can contribute to the different flavor components of the meson, and the wave function itself provides interference.
We present a detailed analysis of the Bc form factors in the BSW framework, by investigating the effects of the flavor dependence on the average transverse quark momentum inside a meson. Branching ratios of two body decays of Bc meson to pseudoscalar and vector mesons are predicted.
Dynamical quasi-localization of matter fields in extra dimension is an elegant mechanism to generate hierarchical 4-dimensional Yukawa couplings. We point out that a bulk matter field whose zero mode is quasi-localized can give a large Kaluza-Klein threshold correction to low energy gauge couplings, which is generically of the order of ln (Yukawa)/8pi^2, so it can significantly affect gauge coupling unification. We compute such threshold corrections in generic 5-dimensional theories compactified on S^1/Z_2 X Z_2, and apply the result to grand unified theories on orbifold generating small Yukaw…
We consider the possibility that the Yukawa couplings depend on the Higgs field, with the motivation of generating the fermion mass hierarchy through appropriate powers of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. This leads to drastic modifications of the Higgs branching ratios, new Higgs contributions to various flavor-violating processes, and observable rates for the top quark decay t-> hc. The underlying flavor dynamics must necessarily appear at the TeV scale and is within the reach of the LHC.
We propose a realization of Minimal Flavor Violation in the lepton sector of the Randall-Sundrum model. With the MFV assumption, the only source of flavor violation are the 5D Yukawa couplings, and the usual two independent sources of flavor violation are related. In the limit of massless neutrinos, the bulk mass matrices and 5D Yukawa matrices are simultaneously diagonalized, and hence the absence of FCNCs. In the case of massive neutrinos, the contributions to FCNCs in the charged lepton sector are highly suppressed, due to the smallness of neutrino masses. In addition, the MFV assumption al…
We explain the imbalance of the flavor mixing angles between the quark and the lepton sectors in the context of the SU(5) GUT with the see-saw mechanism. The quark masses and the CKM matrix elements are obtained by using, respectively, the Fritzsch and Branco - Silva-Marcos form for the up- and down-quark Yukawa matrices (y^u and y^d) at the GUT scale. The charged-lepton Yukawa matrix (y^e) is the transpose of y^d, modified by the Georgi-Jarlskog factor. We show that the neutrino masses and mixing angles suggested by the recent solar and atmospheric neutrinos are then obtained from a simple te…
We propose that the flavor structure of the quark sector of the Standard Model is determined by a vectorial SU(2) flavor symmetry, which we dub Flavorspin, under which quarks transform as triplets. The fundamental Yukawa couplings are real and CP violation is not directly linked to the breaking of the flavor symmetry. A CP-conserving scenario is naturally defined with the feature that the Yukawa spurions are completely determined in terms of the masses and mixings. CP violation may be introduced with negligible impact on low-energy observables other than generating a large CP violating phase i…
In an attempt to understand the observed patterns of lepton and quark masses, models invoking a flavor symmetry $G_f$, under which the Standard Model generations are charged, have been proposed. One particularly successful symmetry, U(2), has been extensively discussed in the literature. The Yukawa matrices in models based on this symmetry reproduce the observed mass ratios in the lepton and quark sectors. The features of the symmetry that determine the texture of the Yukawa matrices can be found in other symmetries as well. We present a model based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry …
