We provide obstructions to the existence of conformally Anosov Reeb flows on a 3-manifold that partially generalize similar obstructions to Anosov Reeb flows. In particular, we show $\mathbb{S}^3$ does not admit conformally Anosov Reeb flows. We also give a Riemannian geometric condition on a metric compatible with a contact structure implying that a Reeb field is Anosov. From this we can give curvature conditions on a metric compatible with a contact structure that implies universal tightness of the contact structure among other things.
We show that the contact structure on the link of a cusp singularity is contactomorphic to a Sol-manifold with the positive contact structure arising from the Anosov flow.
We take a first step towards understanding the relationship between foliations and universally tight contact structures on hyperbolic 3-manifolds. If a surface bundle over a circle has pseudo-Anosov holonomy, we obtain a classification of "extremal" tight contact structures. Specifically, there is exactly one contact structure whose Euler class, when evaluated on the fiber, equals the Euler number of the fiber. This rigidity theorem is a consequence of properties of the action of pseudo-Anosov maps on the complex of curves of the fiber and a remarkable flexibility property of convex surfaces i…
We study pairs of Engel structures on four-manifolds whose intersection has constant rank one and which define the same even contact structure, but induce different orientations on it. We establish a correspondence between such pairs of Engel structures and a class of weakly hyperbolic flows. This correspondence is analogous to the correspondence between bi-contact structures and projectively or conformally Anosov flows on three-manifolds found by Eliashberg--Thurston and by Mitsumatsu.
Using deformations of foliations to contact structures as well as rigidity properties of Anosov foliations we provide infinite families of examples which show that the space of taut foliations in a given homotopy class of plane fields is in general not path connected. Similar methods also show that the space of representations of the fundamental group of a hyperbolic surface to the group of smooth diffeomorphisms of the circle with fixed Euler class is in general not path connected. As an important step along the way we resolve the question of which universally tight contact structures on Seif…
We determine parts of the contact homology of certain contact 3-manifolds in the framework of open book decompositions, due to Giroux. We study two cases: when the monodromy map of the compatible open book is periodic and when it is pseudo-Anosov. For an open book with periodic monodromy, we verify the Weinstein conjecture. In the case of an open book with pseudo-Anosov monodromy, suppose the boundary of a page of the open book is connected and the fractional Dehn twist coefficient $c={k\over n}$, where $n$ is the number of prongs along the boundary. If $k\geq 2$, then there is a well-defined …
We study contact structures compatible with genus one open book decompositions with one boundary component. Any monodromy for such an open book can be written as a product of Dehn twists around dual non-separating curves in the once-punctured torus. Given such a product, we supply an algorithm to determine whether the corresponding contact structure is tight or overtwisted. We rely on Ozsv{á}th-Szab{ó} Heegaard Floer homology in our construction and, in particular, we completely identify the $L$-spaces with genus one, one boundary component, pseudo-Anosov open book decompositions. Lastly, we r…
The theory of differential forms began with a discovery of Poincare who found conservation laws of a new type for Hamiltonian systems - The Integral Invariants. Even in the absence of non-trivial integrals of motion, there exist invariant differential forms: a symplectic two-form, or a contact one-form for geodesic flows. Some invariant forms can be naturally considered as "forms on the quotient." As a space, this quotient may be very bad in the conventional topological sense. These considerations lead to an analog of the de Rham cohomology theory for manifolds carrying smooth dynamical system…
