We address the effect of the viewing angle of the accretion disk plane and the geometry of the broad-line region (BLR) with the goal of interpreting the distribution of quasars along the main sequence (MS). We utilize photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR FeII emission, incorporating the grossly underestimated role of the form factor (f). We recover the dependence of the strength of the FeII emission in the optical (R$_{\rm{FeII}}$) on L$_{\rm{bol}}$/L$_{\rm{Edd}}$ ratio and related observational trends - as a function of the spectral energy distribution (SED) shape, cloud density, composition and intra-cloud dynamics, assumed following prior observational constraints. With this approach, we are now able to explain the diversity of quasars and the change of the quasar properties along the Main Sequence (MS). Our approach also explains the rarity of the highest FeII emitters known as the extreme xA sources and can be used as a predictive tool in future reverberation mapping studies of Type-1 AGNs. This approach further justifies the use of quasars as `cosmological probes'.
Since the discovery of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their subclasses, a unification scheme of AGN has been long sought. Orientation-based unified models predict that some of the diversity within AGN subclasses can be explained by the different viewing angles of the observer. Several orientation categorisations have been suggested, but a widely applicable measure has yet to be found. Using the properties of the ultraviolet and optical broad emission lines of quasars, in particular the velocity offsets and line widths of high-ionisation CIV and low-ionisation MgII lines, a correlation has be…
We address the effect of orientation of the accretion disk plane and the geometry of the broad-line region (BLR) as part of an effort to understand the distribution of quasars in the optical plane of the quasar main sequence. We utilize the photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR incorporating the grossly underestimated form factor ($f$). Treating the aspect of viewing angle appropriately, we confirm the dependence of the $R_{\mathrm{FeII}}$ sequence on Eddington ratio and on the related observational trends - as a function of the SED shape, cloud density and composition, verified from pr…
We address the effect of orientation of the accretion disk plane and the geometry of the broad-line region (BLR) in the context of understanding the distribution of quasars along their Main Sequence. We utilize the photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR, incorporating the `un-constant' virial factor. We show the preliminary results of the analysis to highlight the co-dependence of the Eigenvector 1 parameter, $\mathrm{R_{FeII}}$ on the broad H$β$ FWHM (i.e. the line dispersion) and the inclination angle ($θ$), assuming fixed values for the Eddington ratio ($\mathrm{L_{bol}}/\mathrm{L_{Ed…
The disk wind, which is powered by the radiation force due to spectral lines (line force), is studied for broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. We investigate the structure of the disk wind based on the non-hydrodynamic method and compare with wind properties inferred from X-ray observations of BAL quasars. In this paper, we apply the stellar wind theory to the initial condition (the mass outflow rate at the base of the wind). We found the funnel-shaped winds with a half opening angle of 50^{circ} for the case of epsilon=0.3-0.9 and M_{BH}=10^{7-8.5}M_odot, where epsilon is the Eddington ratio …
In a sample of 60 quasars selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with at least six-epoch spectroscopy, we investigate the variability of emission lines and continuum luminosity at various aspects. A strong anti-correlation between the variability and continuum luminosity at 2500 Å is found for the sample, which is consistent with previous works. In individual sources, we find that half of the sample objects have a trend of being bluer-when-brighter trend (BWB), while the remaining half exhibit redder-when-brighter trend (RWB). Although the mechanism for RWB is unclear, the effects of ho…
We investigated the optical/ultraviolet (UV) color variations for a sample of 2169 quasars based on multi-epoch spectroscopy in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release seven (DR7) and data release nine (DR9). To correct the systematic difference between DR7 and DR9 due to the different instrumental setup, we produced a correction spectrum by using a sample of F-stars observed both in DR7 and DR9. The correction spectrum was then applied to quasars when comparing the spectra of DR7 with DR9. In each object, the color variation was explored by comparing the spectral index of the continu…
Bolometric corrections based on the optical-to-ultraviolet continuum spectrum of quasars are widely used to quantify their radiative output, although such estimates are affected by a myriad of uncertainties, such as the generally unknown line-of-sight angle to the central engine. In order to shed light on these issues, we investigate the state-of-the-art models of Hubeny et al. that describe the continuum spectrum of thin accretion discs and include relativistic effects. We explore the bolometric corrections as a function of mass accretion rates, black hole masses and viewing angles, restricte…
Most of the hadronic jet models for quasars (QSOs) and microquasars (MQs) found in literature represent beams of particles (e.g. protons). These particles interact with the matter in the stellar wind of the companion star in the system or with crossing clouds, generating gamma-rays via proton-proton processes. Our aim is to derive the particle distribution in the jet as seen by the observer, so that proper computation of the $γ$-ray and neutrino yields can be done. We use relativistic invariants to obtain the transformed expressions in the case of a power-law and power-law with a cutoff partic…
The concept of the evolutionary sequence of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been challenged in the last few decades since AGN subclasses are considered to be different due to their viewing angle. In this paper, we collected a sample of 1108 blazars (472 flat-spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs and 636 BL Lacertae objects, BL Lacs) and 120 Seyfert galaxies (SGs) with available redshifts and spectral properties in radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands in order to compare the properties of SGs and the blazar subclasses and also explore their possible unification through evolution. It is f…
Eigenvector 1 (EV1) was found to be the dominant component behind the significant correlations for the measured parameters in quasar spectra (Boroson & Green, 1992). The parameter R$_{\mathrm{FeII}}$, which strongly correlates to the EV1, is the ${\mathrm{FeII}}$ strength, defined to be the ratio of the equivalent width of ${\mathrm{FeII}}$ to the equivalent width of ${\mathrm{Hβ}}$. This allows to construct a quasar main sequence analogous to the stellar properties driven HR diagram (Sulentic et al. 2001). We try to find the main driver behind the EV1 among the basic (theoretically motivated)…
We have monitored the quasar 3C 273 in optical $V$, $R$ and $I$ bands from 2005 to 2016. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected on seven nights. The variability amplitudes for most of nights are less than 10\% and four nights more than 20\%. When considering the nights with time spans $>4$ hours, the value of duty cycle (DC) is 14.17 per cent. Over the twelve years, the overall magnitude and color index variabilities are $\bigtriangleup I=0^{\rm m}.67$, $\bigtriangleup R=0^{\rm m}.72$, $\bigtriangleup V=0^{\rm m}.68$, and $\bigtriangleup (V-R)=0^{\rm m}.25$ respectively. The largest clear IDV …
The interpretation of the main sequence of quasars has become a frontier subject in the last years. The consider the effect of a highly flattened, axially symmetric geometry for the broad-line region (BLR) on the parameters related to the distribution of quasars along their Main Sequence. We utilize the photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR, assuming `un-constant' virial factor with a strong dependence on the viewing angle. We show the preliminary results of the analysis to highlight the co-dependence of the Eigenvector 1 parameter, R$_{\mathrm{FeII}}$ on the broad H$β$ FWHM (i.e. the l…
We analyse the properties of the CIV broad emission line in connection with the X-ray emission of 30 bright SDSS quasars at z~3.0-3.3 with pointed XMM-Newton observations, which were selected to test the suitability of AGN as cosmological tools. In our previous work, we found that a large fraction (~25%) of the quasars in this sample are X-ray underluminous by factors of >3-10. As absorbing columns of >10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be safely ruled out, their weakness is most likely intrinsic. Here we explore possible correlations between the UV and X-ray features of these sources to investigate the …
3C 273 is an intensively monitored flat-spectrum radio quasar with both a beamed jet and blue bump together with broad emission lines. The coexistence of the comparably prominent jet and accretion disk leads to complicated variability properties. Recent reverberation mapping monitoring for 3C 273 revealed that the optical continuum shows a distinct long-term trend that does not have a corresponding echo in the Hbeta fluxes. We compile multi-wavelength monitoring data from the Swift archive and other ground-based programs and clearly find two components of emissions at optical wavelength. One c…
Quasars are among the most luminous sources characterized by their broad band spectra ranging from radio through optical to X-ray band, with numerous emission and absorption features. Using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Boroson & Green (1992) were able to show significant correlations between the measured parameters. Among the significant correlations projected, the leading component, related to Eigenvector 1 (EV1) was dominated by the anti-correlation between the Fe${\mathrm{II}}$ optical emission and [OIII] line where the EV1 alone contained 30% of the total variance. This introduc…
We analyze the parsec-scale jet kinematics from 2007 June to 2013 January of a sample of $γ$-ray bright blazars monitored roughly monthly with the Very Long Baseline Array at 43~GHz. In a total of 1929 images, we measure apparent speeds of 252 emission knots in 21 quasars, 12 BL~Lacertae objects (BLLacs), and 3 radio galaxies, ranging from 0.02$c$ to 78$c$; 21\% of the knots are quasi-stationary. Approximately 1/3 of the moving knots execute non-ballistic motions, with the quasars exhibiting acceleration along the jet within 5~pc (projected) of the core, and knots in the BLLacs tending to dece…
We present Chandra observations of 2106 radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1.7<z<2.7 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), through data release fourteen (DR14), that do not contain broad absorption lines (BAL) in their rest-frame UV spectra. This sample adds over a decade worth of SDSS and Chandra observations to our previously published sample of 139 quasars from SDSS DR5 which is still used to correlate X-ray and optical/UV emission in typical quasars. We fit the SDSS spectra for 753 of the quasars in our sample that have high-quality (exposure time $\gtrapprox$10 ks and off-axis …
Quasars are complex sources, characterized by broad band spectra from radio through optical to X-ray band, with numerous emission and absorption features. However, Boroson & Green (1992) used Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and with this analysis they were able to show significant correlations between the measured parameters. The leading component, related to Eigenvector 1 (EV1) was dominated by the anticorrelation between the Fe${\mathrm{II}}$ optical emission and [OIII] line and EV1 alone contained 30% of the total variance. It opened a way in defining a quasar main sequence, in close an…
The concept of the quasar main sequence is very attractive since it stresses correlations between various parameters and implies the underlying simplicity. In the optical plane defined by the width of the H\{beta} line and the ratio of the equivalent width of the Fe II to H\{beta} observed objects form a characteristic pattern. In this paper, we use a physically motivated model to explain the distribution of quasars in the optical plane. Continuum is modelled as an accretion disk with a hard X-ray power law uniquely tight to the disk at the basis of observational scaling, and the Broad Line Re…
We investigate the properties of the most distant quasars ULASJ134208.10+092838.61 ($z = 7.54$), ULASJ112001.48+064124.3 ($z = 7.08$) and DELSJ003836.10-152723.6 ($z = 7.02$) studying their Optical-UV emission that shows clear evidence of the presence of an accretion disk. We model such emission applying the relativistic disk models KERRBB and SLIMBH for which we have derived some analytical approximations to describe the observed emission as a function of the black hole mass, accretion rate, spin and the viewing angle. We found that: 1] our black hole mass estimates are compatible with the on…
We investigate the dependence of gamma-ray brightness of blazars on intrinsic properties of their parsec-scale radio jets and the implication for relativistic beaming. By combining apparent jet speeds derived from high-resolution VLBA images from the MOJAVE program with millimetre-wavelength flux density monitoring data from Metsahovi Radio Observatory, we estimate the jet Doppler factors, Lorentz factors, and viewing angles for a sample of 62 blazars. We study the trends in these quantities between the sources which were detected in gamma-rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) during it…
