In this note we compute some local unramified integrals defined on metaplectic covering groups of $GL$. These local integrals which were introduced by Suzuki, represent the standard tensor product $L$ function $L(π^{(n)}\times τ^{(n)},s)$ and extend the well known local integrals which represent $L(π\times τ,s)$. The computation is done using a certain "generating function" which extends a similar function introduced by the author in a previous paper. In the last section we discuss the Conjectures of Suzuki and introduce a global integral which unfolds to the above local integrals. This last part is mainly conjectural and relies heavily on the existence of Suzuki representations defined on covering groups. In the last subsection we introduce a new global doubling integral which represents the partial tensor product $L$ function $L^S(π\times τ,s)$.
The classical theta correspondence establishes a relationship between automorphic representations on special orthogonal groups and automorphic representations on symplectic groups or their double covers. This correspondence is achieved by using as integral kernel a theta series on the metaplectic double cover of a symplectic group that is constructed from the Weil representation. There is also an analogous local correspondence. In this work we present an extension of the classical theta correspondence to higher degree metaplectic covers of symplectic and special orthogonal groups. The key issu…
Let $M=GL_{r_1}\times\cdots\times GL_{r_k}\subseteq GL_r$ be a Levi subgroup of $GL_r$, where $r=r_1+\cdots+r_k$, and $\tilde{M}$ its metaplectic preimage in the metaplectic cover $\tilde{GL}_r$ of $GL_r$. For automorphic representations $π_1,\dots,π_k$ of $\tilde{GL}_{r_1}(\A),\dots,\tilde{GL}_{r_k}(\A)$, we construct an automorphic representation $π$ of $\tilde{M}(\A)$ which can be considered as the "tensor product" of the representations $π_1,\dots,π_k$. This is the global analogue of the metaplectic tensor product defined by P. Mezo in the sense that locally at each place $v$, $π_v$ is equ…
Let $G^{(r)}$ denote the metaplectic covering group of the linear algebraic group $G$. In this paper we study conditions on unramified representations of the group $G^{(r)}$ not to have a nonzero Whittaker function. We state a general Conjecture about the possible unramified characters $χ$ such that the unramified sub-representation of $Ind_{B^{(r)}}^{G^{(r)}}χδ_B^{1/2}$ will have no nonzero Whittaker function. We prove this Conjecture for the groups $GL_n^{(r)}$ with $r\ge n-1$, and for the exceptional groups $G_2^{(r)}$ when $r\ne 2$.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. The classification of the irreducible representations of $GL_n(F)$, $n\ge0$ in terms of supercuspidal representations is one of the highlights of the Bernstein--Zelevinsky theory. We give an analogous classification for metaplectic coverings of $GL_n(F)$, $n\ge0$.
Half-integral weight modular forms are naturally viewed as automorphic forms on the so-called metaplectic covering of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_{\mathbf{Q}})$ -- a central extension by the roots of unity $μ_2$ in $\mathbf{Q}$. For an odd prime number $p$, we give a complete classification of the smooth irreducible genuine mod-$p$ representations of the corresponding covering of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$ by showing that the functor of taking pro-$p$-Iwahori-invariants and its left adjoint define a bijection onto the set of simple right modules of the pro-$p$ Iwahori Hecke algebr…
The analogies between symplectic and orthogonal groups, regarded as symmetries of real bilinear forms, are manifest in their (metaplectic and spin) projective representations. In finite dimensions, those are true representations of doubly covering groups; but one may also use group extensions by a circle. Here we lay out a parallel treatment of of the Mp$^\mathrm{c}$ and Spin$^\mathrm{c}$ covering groups, acting on the respective Fock spaces by permuting certain Gaussian vectors. The cocycles of these extensions exhibit interesting similarities.
We formulate the transfer factor of character lifting from orthogonal groups to symplectic groups by Adams in the framework of symplectic Dirac cohomology for the Lie superalgebras and the Rittenberg-Scheunert correspondence of representations of the Lie superalgebra $\fro\frsp(1|2n)$ and the Lie algebra $\fro(2n+1)$. This leads to formulation of a direct lifting of characters from the linear symplectic group $Sp(2n,\bbR)$ to its nonlinear covering metaplectic group $Mp(2n,\bbR)$.
We study Whittaker functions on nonlinear coverings of simple algebraic groups over a non-archimedean local field. We produce a recipe for expressing such a Whittaker function as a weighted sum over a crystal graph, and show that in type A, these expressions agree with known formulae for the prime power supported coefficients of Multiple Dirichlet Series.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedian local field of characteristic zero and $E/F$ a quadratic extension. The aim of the present article is to study the multiplicity of an irreducible admissible representation of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$ occurring in an irreducible admissible genuine representation of non-trivial two fold covering $\widetilde{\rm GL}_2(E)$ of ${\rm GL}_2(E)$.
Representation theory of $p$-adic groups naturally comes in the study of automorphic forms and one way to understand representations of a group is by restricting to its nice subgroups. D. Prasad studied the restriction for pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), D_{F}^{\times})$ where $E/F$ is a quadratic equation and $D_{F}$ is the unique quaternion division algebra, and $D_{F}^{\times} \hookrightarrow {\rm GL}_{2}(E)$. Prasad proved a multiplicity one result and a `dichotomy' relating the restriction for the pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_…
The classical theta correspondence, based on the Weil representation, allows one to lift automorphic representations on symplectic groups or their double covers to automorphic representations on special orthogonal groups. It is of interest to vary the orthogonal group and describe the behavior in this theta tower (the Rallis tower). In prior work, the authors obtained an extension of the classical theta correspondence to higher degree metaplectic covers of symplectic and special orthogonal groups that is based on the tensor product of the Weil representation with another small representation. …
Let $\widetilde{\mathrm{Sp}}(2n)$ be the metaplectic covering of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$ over a local field of characteristic zero. The core of the theory of endoscopy for $\widetilde{\mathrm{Sp}}(2n)$ is the geometric transfer of orbital integrals to its elliptic endoscopic groups. The dual of this map, called the spectral transfer, is expected to yield endoscopic character relations which should reveal the internal structure of $L$-packets. As a first step, we characterize the image of the collective geometric transfer in the non-archimedean case, then reduce the spectral transfer to the case of c…
Let $λ: \tilde{G}\to G$ be the non-trivial double covering of the symplectic group $G=Sp(V,ω)$ of the symplectic vector space $(V,ω)$ by the metaplectic group $\tilde{G}=Mp(V,ω).$ In this case, $λ$ is also a representation of $\tilde{G}$ on the vector space $V$ and thus, it gives rise to the representation of $\tilde{G}$ on the space of exterior forms $\bigwedge^{\bullet}V^*$ by taking wedge products. Let $S$ be the minimal globalization of the Harish-Chandra module of the complex Segal-Shale-Weil representation of the metaplectic group $\tilde{G}.$ We prove that the associative commutant alge…
We consider an $n$-fold Brylinski-Deligne cover of a reductive group over a $p$-adic field. Since the space of Whittaker functionals of an irreducible genuine representation of such a cover is not one-dimensional, one can consider a local coefficients matrix arising from an intertwining operator, which is the natural analogue of the local coefficients in the linear case. In this paper, we concentrate on genuine principal series and establish some fundamental properties of such a local coefficients matrix, including the investigation of its arithmetic invariants. As a consequence, we prove a fo…
Brylinski and Deligne have provided a framework to study central extensions of reductive groups by K2 over a field F. Such central extensions can be used to construct central extensions of p-adic groups by finite cyclic groups, including the metaplectic groups. Particularly interesting is the observation of Brylinski and Deligne that a central extension of a reductive group by K2, over a p-adic field, yields a family of central extensions of reductive groups by the multiplicative group over the residue field, indexed by the points of the building. These algebraic groups over the residue field …
We present an integral representation for the tensor product $L$-function of a pair of automorphic cuspidal representations, one of a classical group, the other of a general linear group. Our construction is uniform over all classical groups, and is applicable to all cuspidal representations; it does not require genericity. The main new ideas of the construction are the use of generalized Speh representations as inducing data for the Eisenstein series and the introduction of a new (global and local) model, which generalizes the Whittaker model. This is the first in a series of papers, treating…
This is a research announcement concerning a series of constructions obtained by applying the "doubling method" from the theory of automorphic forms to covering groups. Using these constructions, we obtain partial tensor product L-functions attached to generalized Shimura lifts, which may be defined in a natural way since at almost all places the representations are unramified principal series.
In this work we develop an integral representation for the partial $L$-function of a pair $π\timesτ$ of genuine irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations, $π$ of the $m$-fold covering of Matsumoto of the symplectic group $Sp_{2n}$, and $τ$ of a certain covering group of $GL_k$, with arbitrary $m$, $n$ and $k$. Our construction is based on the recent extension by Cai, Friedberg, Ginzburg and the author, of the classical doubling method of Piatetski-Shapiro and Rallis, from rank-$1$ twists to arbitrary rank twists. We prove a basic global identity for the integral and compute the local in…
We consider the restriction and induction of representations between a covering group and its derived subgroup, both on the representation-theoretic side and the L-parameter side. In particular, restriction of a genuine principal series is analyzed in detail. We also discuss a metaplectic tensor product construction for covers of the symplectic similitudes groups, and remark on the generality of such a construction for other groups. Furthermore, working with an arbitrary irreducible constituent of a unitary unramified principal series, we prove a multiplicity formula for its restriction to the…
We study when a tensor product of irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ contains all irreducibles as subrepresentations; we say such a tensor product covers $\mathsf{Irrep}(S_n)$. Our results show that this behavior is typical. We first give a general sufficient criterion for tensor products to have this property, which holds asymptotically almost surely for constant-sized collections of (Plancherel or uniformly) random irreducibles. We also consider the minimal tensor power of a single fixed irreducible representation needed to cover $\mathsf{Irrep}(S_n)$. Here a simple low…
In this paper, we give a construction of certain induced complementary series of the universal covering of the symplectic groups. There are abundant such representations besides those of linear groups. We achieve this by applying invariant tensor product to degenerate complementary series on the Shilov boundary.
We construct local and global metaplectic double covers of odd general spin groups, using the cover of Matsumoto of spin groups. Following Kazhdan and Patterson, a local exceptional representation is the unique irreducible quotient of a principal series representation, induced from a certain exceptional character. The global exceptional representation is obtained as the multi-residue of an Eisenstein series, it is an automorphic representation and decomposes as the restricted tensor product of local exceptional representations. As in the case of the small representation of SO(2n+1) of Bump, Fr…
For $\imath$quantum covering groups $(\mathbf{U}, \mathbf{U}^\imath)$ of super Kac-Moody type, we construct $\imath$-canonical bases for the highest weight integrable $\mathbf{U}$-modules and their tensor products regarded as $\mathbf{U}^\imath$-modules, as well as a canonical basis for the modified form of the $\imath$quantum group $\mathbf{U}^\imath$, using the $\imath^π$-divided powers, rank one canonical basis for $\mathbf{U}^\imath$.
In this paper we initiate a study of the relation between weight modules for simple Lie algebras and unitary representations of the corresponding simply-connected Lie groups. In particular we consider in detail from this point of view the universal covering group of SU(1,1), including new results on the discrete part of tensor products of irreducible representations. As a consequence of these results, we show that the set of smooth vectors of the tensor product intersects trivially some of the representations in the discrete spectrum.

We provide formulas for invariants defined on a tensor product of defining representations of unitary groups, under the action of the product group. This situation has a physical interpretation, as it is related to the quantum mechanical state space of a multi-particle system in which each particle has finitely many outcomes upon observation. Moreover, these invariant functions separate the entangled and unentangled states, and are therefore viewed as measurements of quantum entanglement. When the ranks of the unitary groups are large, we provide a graph theoretic interpretation for the dimens…
We construct a canonical basis for a class of tensor product modules of a quantum covering group associated to a Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra of anisotropic type, and use these bases to construct a canonical basis for the modified form of a quantum covering group.
We describe the image of the canonical tensor functor from Deligne's interpolating category $Rep(GL_{m-n})$ to $Rep(GL(m|n))$ attached to the standard representation. This implies explicit tensor product decompositions between any two projective modules and any two Kostant modules of $GL(m|n)$, covering the decomposition between any two irreducible $GL(m|1)$-representations. We also obtain character and dimension formulas. For $m>n$ we classify the mixed tensors with non-vanishing superdimension. For $m=n$ we characterize the maximally atypical mixed tensors and show some applications regardin…
A quantum covering group is an algebra with parameters $q$ and $π$ subject to $π^2=1$ and it admits an integral form; it specializes to the usual quantum group at $π=1$ and to a quantum supergroup of anisotropic type at $π=-1$. In this paper we establish the Frobenius-Lusztig homomorphism and Lusztig-Steinberg tensor product theorem in the setting of quantum covering groups at roots of 1. The specialization of these constructions at $π=1$ recovers Lusztig's constructions for quantum groups at roots of 1.
Let $\mathbb S$ be a Clifford module for the complexified Clifford algebra $\mathbb{C}\ell(\mathbb R^n)$, $\mathbb S'$ its dual, $ρ$ and $ρ'$ be the corresponding representations of the spin group ${\rm Spin}(n)$. The group $G= {\rm Spin}(1,n+1)$ is a (twofold) covering of the conformal group of $\mathbb R^n$. For $λ, μ\in \mathbb C$, let $π_{ρ, λ}$ (resp. $π_{ρ',μ}$) be the spinorial representation of $G$ realized on a (subspace of) $C^\infty(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb S)$ (resp. $C^\infty(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb S')$). For $0\leq k\leq n$ and $m\in \mathbb N$, we construct a symmetry breaking different…
The deep theory of approximate subgroups establishes 3-step product growth for subsets of finite simple groups $G$ of Lie type of bounded rank. In this paper we obtain 2-step growth results for representations of such groups $G$ (including those of unbounded rank), where products of subsets are replaced by tensor products of representations. Let $G$ be a finite simple group of Lie type and $χ$ a character of $G$. Let $|χ|$ denote the sum of the squares of the degrees of all (distinct) irreducible characters of $G$ which are constituents of $χ$. We show that for all $δ>0$ there exists $ε>0$, in…
Fix a semisimple Lie algebra g. Gaudin algebras are commutative algebras acting on tensor product multiplicity spaces for g-representations. These algebras depend on a parameter which is a point in the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of marked stable genus 0 curves. When the parameter is real, then the Gaudin algebra acts with simple spectrum on the tensor product multiplicity space and gives us a basis of eigenvectors. In this paper, we study the monodromy of these eigenvectors as the parameter varies within the real locus; this gives an action of the fundamental group of this moduli space, whic…
