Jet production and jet substructure modification in heavy-ion collisions have played an essential role in revealing the in-medium evolution of parton showers and the determination of the properties of strongly-interacting matter under extreme conditions. It is imperative to extend these studies to include flavor tagging and to devise observables that are sensitive to the partonic origin of jets. The average jet charge, defined as the momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of particles inside the jet, is a proxy of the electric charge of the quark or gluon that initiates the jet. We demonstrate how the factorization framework of soft-collinear effective theory can be generalized to evaluate the jet charge in a dense strongly-interacting matter environment, such as the one produced in nuclear reactions at collider energies. Observables that can separate the contribution of in-medium branching from the trivial isospin effects are identified and their connection to established jet quenching effects is elucidated. We present predictions for the transverse momentum dependence of the jet charge distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its modification relative to the proton case.
We compare the jet-path length and beam-energy dependence of the pion nuclear modification factor and a parton-jet nuclear modification factor at RHIC and LHC. We contrast predictions based on a linear pQCD and a highly non-linear hybrid-AdS holographic model of jet-energy loss. We find that both models require a reduction of the jet-medium coupling from RHIC to LHC to account for the measured pion nuclear modification factor. In case of the parton-jet nuclear modification factor, however, which serves as a lower bound for the LO jet nuclear modification factor of reconstructed jets, the extra…
Medium modification of γ-tagged jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a Linearized Boltzmann Transport model for jet propagation that includes both elastic parton scattering and induced gluon emission. Inclusion of recoiled medium partons in the reconstruction of partonic jets is found to significantly reduce the net jet energy loss. Experimental data on γ-jet asymmetry and survival rate in Pb + Pb collisions at \sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV can be reproduced. Medium modifications of reconstructed jet fragmentation function, transverse profile and energy flow outside the jet-cone…
We study inclusive jet suppression and modifications in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a transport-based model. The model includes vacuum-like parton shower evolution at high-virtuality, a linearized transport for jet-medium interactions, and a simple ansatz for the jet-induced hydrodynamic response of the medium. Model parameters are calibrated to nuclear modification factors for inclusive hadron $R_{AA}^{h}$ and single inclusive jets $R_{AA}^{j}$ with cone size $R=0.4$ in 0-10% central Au-Au and Pb-Pb collisions measured at the RHIC and LHC. The calibrated model consistently describes the…
The nuclear modification of jet splitting in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC energies is studied based on the higher twist formalism. Assuming coherent energy loss for the two splitted subjets, a non-monotonic jet energy dependence is found for the nuclear modification of jet splitting function: strongest modification at intermediate jet energies whereas weaker modification for larger or smaller jet energies. Combined with the smaller size and lower density of the QGP medium at RHIC than at the LHC, this explains the CMS-STAR groomed jet puzzle -- strong nuclear modificat…
Jet modification in heavy-ion collisions is an important probe of the nature and structure of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in these collisions and also encodes information about how the wakes that jets excite in a droplet of QGP form and relax. However, in experiment, one cannot know what a particular jet in a heavy ion collision would have looked like without quenching, making it difficult to interpret measurements in terms of individual jet modification. The goal of this Monte Carlo study is to gain insight into the modification of jet observables using the hybrid strong/weak coupli…
We study the medium modification of jets correlated with large transverse momentum photons at the LHC via a transport and perturbative QCD hybrid model which incorporates the contributions from both elastic collisions and radiative energy loss experienced by the parton showers. Calculations are performed for the modification of the photon-tagged jet yield, the photon-jet energy imbalance, and the azimuthal distribution of away-side jets. The modifications of photon-tagged jets with different $x_T = p_{T, J}/p_{T, γ}$ values are studied and they exhibit different centrality and jet cone size de…
Within a multiphase transport model, medium modifications of differential jet shapes are investigated in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. The differential jet shapes are significantly modified by the strong interactions between jets and a partonic medium in Pb+Pb collisions relative to that in p+p collisions. The modifications are slightly weakened by the hadronization of coalescence, but strengthened by resonance decays in hadronic rescatterings. Subleading jets display larger medium modifications than leading jets, especially in central Pb+Pb collisions with large dijet…
High energy quarks and gluons play essential roles in the tomographic study of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of the quark-gluon plasma. They interact with the traversed dense matter through elastic and inelastic collisions, and lose some of their initial energy in the process. Experimental observables for jet modification include single inclusive hadron production, hadron emission opposite to a triggered hadron or photon, and full jet observables. Here a brief review of parton energy loss and jet quenching in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented.
We study the effect of the nucleon meson cloud on centrality dependence of the jet nuclear modification factor $R_{pA}$. We find that the meson-baryon Fock components may lead to a noticeable deviation of $R_{pA}$ from unity. Our results for $R_{pA}$ show the same tendency as that observed by ATLAS in $p+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV. The meson cloud suppresses the central jet events and enhances the peripheral jet events. But quantitatively the effect is somewhat smaller than in the data.
With our coupled jet-fluid model, we study the nuclear modifications of full jets and jet structures for single inclusive jets and $γ$-jets in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$~ATeV and $2.76$~ATeV. The in-medium evolution of full jet shower is described by a set of coupled transport equations including the effects of collisional energy loss, transverse momentum broadening and medium-induced splitting process. The dynamical evolution of bulk medium is simulated by solving relativistic hydrodynamic equation with source term which accounts for the energy and momentum deposited by hard jet shower to sof…
The striking suppression and modification patterns that are observed in jet observables measured in heavy-ion collisions with respect to the proton-proton baseline have the potential to constrain the spatio-temporal branching process of energetic partons in a dense QCD medium. The mechanism of jet energy loss is intricately associated with medium resolution of jet substructure fluctuations. This naturally affects the behavior of the suppression of jets at high-pT, inducing an explicit dependence on jet scales. In this contribution, we review recent work on using the insight from multi-parton q…
Key features of jet-medium interactions in heavy-ion collisions are modifications to the jet structure. Recent results from experiments at the LHC and RHIC have motivated several theoretical calculations and monte carlo models towards predicting these observables simultaneously. In this report, the recoil picture in \textsc{Jewel} is summarized and two independent procedures through which background subtraction can be performed in \textsc{Jewel} are introduced. Information of the medium recoil in \textsc{Jewel} significantly improves its description of several jet shape measurements.
We study nuclear modification of the photon-tagged jets in $AA$ collisions within the jet quenching scheme based on the light-cone path integral approach to the induced gluon emission. The calculations are performed for running coupling. Collisional energy loss is treated as a perturbation to the radiative mechanism. We obtain a reasonable agreement with the recent data from the STAR Collaboration on the mid-rapidity nuclear modification factor $I_{AA}$ for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV for parametrization of running $α_s$ consistent with that necessary for description of the data on …
Jet energy transported to quark-gluon plasma during jet-medium interaction excites the QGP medium and creates energetic thermal partons -- recoil particles or recoils. Modification of the jet structure in heavy ion collisions is studied using \textsc{martini}, in which recoil simulation is enabled. In large systems such as central Pb-Pb collisions, the recoil effect is expected to be critical due to strong jet-medium interaction. We show the results of the jet mass function and jet shape function are improved when the recoil particles are included in the reconstructed jets. We conclude that th…
Jets produced by the initial hard scattering in heavy ion collision events lose energy due to interactions with the color-deconfined medium formed around them: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet-medium interactions constitute an important theoretical and experimental field for studies of QGP, and various models with different assumptions have been proposed to describe them. A fair and direct comparison of these models requires that all other aspects of the simulation be fixed, which is achieved in this work by relying on the JETSCAPE framework. We employ JETSCAPE to directly and comprehensively…
We study modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV due to mini-quark-gluon plasma which can be produced in high multiplicity events. We show that for underlying events with $dN_{ch}/dη\sim 20-60$ the medium effects lead to a considerable modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jet fragmentation functions. For inclusive jets the magnitude of the effect is surprisingly large. The effect is quite strong even for typical underlying events. We find that at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV the spectrum of charged hadrons is suppressed by $\sim 35-40$ % at $p…
We study the evolution of full jet shower in quark-gluon plasma via solving a set of coupled differential transport equations for the three-dimensional momentum distributions of quarks and gluons contained in the full jets. In our jet evolution equations, we include all partonic splitting processes as well as the collisional energy loss and transverse momentum broadening for both the leading and radiated partons of the full jets. Combining with a realistic (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic simulation for the space-time profiles of the hot and dense nuclear medium produced in heavy-ion col…
In these proceedings we report a recent calculation of the jet charge modification in heavy-ion relative to proton collisions at the LHC. Jets have played an essential role in constraining theories of in-medium parton shower evolution and in determining the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic nuclear reactions. It is important to extend these studies to flavor-tagged jets and explore observables that are sensitive to their partonic origin. The average jet charge, introduced early on in the history of quantum chromodynamics, is a proxy for the electric charge of t…
We present a coherent model that combines jet production from perturbative QCD with strongly-coupled jet-medium interactions described in holography. We use this model to study the modification of an ensemble of jets upon propagation through a quark-gluon plasma resembling central heavy ion collisions. Here the modification of the dijet asymmetry depends strongly on the subleading jet width, which can therefore be an important observable for studying jet-medium interactions. We furthermore show that the modification of the shape of the leading jet is relatively insensitive to the dijet asymmet…
Jet charge characterizes the electric charge distribution inside a jet. In this talk we make the first theoretical study of jet charge in high-energy nuclear collisions and calculate numerically the medium alternations of jet charge due to parton energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma. The parton multiple scattering in hot/dense QCD medium is simulated by a modified version of PYQUEN Monte Carlo model with 3+1D ideal hydrodynamical evolution of the fireball. Our preliminary results show that the averaged jet charge is significant modified in A+A collisions relative to that in p+p. The different…
The discovery of collectivity in proton-proton collisions, is one of the most puzzling outcomes from the two first runs at LHC, as it points to the possibility of creation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma, earlier believed to only be created in heavy ion collisions. One key observation from heavy ion collisions is still not observed in proton-proton, namely jet-quenching. In this letter it is shown how a model capable of describing soft collective features of proton-proton collisions, also predicts modifications to jet fragmentation properties. With this starting point, several new observables suited f…
In this paper we investigate the medium modifications of girth distributions for inclusive jets and $Z^0$ tagged jets with small radius ($R=0.2$) in Pb+Pb collisions with $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV at the LHC. The partonic spectrum in the initial hard scattering of elementary collisions are obtained by a event generator POWHEG+PYTHIA, which matches the next-to-leading (NLO) matrix elements with parton showering, and energy loss of faster parton traversing in hot/dense QCD medium is calculated by Monte Carlo simulation within Higher-Twist formalism of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. We present …
Using a recently-developed perturbative-QCD approach for jet evolution in a dense quark-gluon plasma, we study the nuclear modification factor for the jet fragmentation function. The qualitative behaviour that we find is in agreement with the respective experimental observations in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC: a pronounced nuclear enhancement at both ends of the spectrum. Our Monte Carlo simulations are supplemented with analytic estimates which clarify the physical interpretation of the results. The main source of theoretical uncertainty is the sensitivity of our calculations to a low-momentu…
Based on a multiphase transport model, medium modifications of prompt photon-tagged jet fragmentation function are investigated by comparing prompt photon-tagged hadron azimuthal correlation in Au+Au collisions (0-40\%) with that in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The measured modification factor, $I_{AA}$, increases with the increasing integration range of the away side, which reveals a medium-modified jet shape in which the medium enhancement of soft particles is preferentially located far away from the jet axis. The $I_{AA}$ largely results from strong interactions betwe…
Whether quark- and gluon-initiated jets are modified differently by the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has thus far eluded a definitive experimental answer. A crucial complication for quark-gluon discrimination in both proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions is that all measurements necessarily average over the (unknown) quark-gluon composition of a jet sample. In the heavy-ion context, the simultaneous modification of both the fractions and substructure of quark and gluon jets by the quark-gluon plasma further obscures the interpretation. H…
It is shown that the nuclear modification factor can be smaller that unity for jet production at small $x$ and at large transverse momentum without any violation of the factorization theorem and the initial state effects is able to explain the nuclear modification factor of the order of the one measured by ATLAS. In other word, initial state effects are able to describe the jet quenching for the gluon jet production.
Coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydrodynamic (CoLBT-hydro) model has been developed for simultaneous simulations of jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation in heavy-ion collisions. Within this coupled approach, the final reconstructed jets in heavy-ion collisions include not only hadrons from the hadronization of medium modified jet shower partons from the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) but also hadrons from the freeze-out of the jet-induced medium excitation in the hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. Using the CoLBT-hydro model, we study medium modification of the fr…
The modification of jet substructure in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied using JETSCAPE, a publicly available software package containing a framework for Monte Carlo event generators. Multi-stage jet evolution in JETSCAPE provides an integrated description of jet quenching by combining multiple models, with each becoming active at a different stage of the parton shower evolution. Jet substructure modification due to different aspects of jet quenching is studied using jet shape and jet fragmentation observables. Various combinations of jet energy loss models are exploed, with medium…
We propose an extension to classify jet modification in heavy-ion collisions by including the jet mass along with its energy. The mass of a jet, as measured by jet reconstruction algorithms, is constrained by the jet's virtuality, which in turn has a considerable effect on such observables as the fragmentation function and jet shape observables. The leading parton, propagating through a dense medium, experiences substantial virtuality (or mass) depletion along with energy loss. Meaningful comparisons between surviving jets and jets produced in $p$-$p$ collisions require mass depletion to be ta…
Measurement of in-medium jet modification using direct photon+jet and $π^{0}$+jet correlations in $p+p$ and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV
In the case that a dense medium is created in a heavy ions collision, high-E_t jets are expected to be broadened by medium-modified gluon emission. This broadening is directly related, through geometry, to the energy loss measured in inclusive high-p_t particle suppression. We present here the modifications of jet observables due to the presence of a medium for the case of azimuthal jet energy distributions and k_t-differential multiplicities inside the jets.
Centrality-dependent measurements of hadron and jet cross section attenuation in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei can shed new light on the physics of final-state interactions in the nuclear matter, including the path-length dependence of the in-medium parton shower formation and evolution. Recent simulation studies have demonstrated the feasibility of experimental centrality determination in $e$A reactions at the electron-ion collider via neutron detection in the zero-degree calorimeter. Motivated by these results, we present the first theoretical calculation of the production rate modific…
We compute modifications to the jet spectrum in the presence of a dense medium. We show that in the large-$N_c$ approximation and at leading logarithmic accuracy the jet nuclear modification factor factorizes into a quenching factor associated to the total jet color charge and a Sudakov suppression factor which accounts for the energy loss of jet substructure fluctuations. This factor, called the jet collimator, implements the fact that subjets, that are not resolved by the medium, lose energy coherently as a single color charge, whereas resolved large angle fluctuations suffer more quenching.…
The modification of hard jets in the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is studied using the MATTER event generator. Based on the higher twist formalism of energy loss, the MATTER event generator simulates the evolution of highly virtual partons through a medium. These partons sampled from an underlying PYTHIA kernel undergo splitting through a combination of vacuum and medium induced emission. The momentum exchange with the medium is simulated via the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$, which is assumed to scale with the entropy density at a given location in the medium. The entropy density is obtaine…
We proposed a new observable based on two particle azimuth correlation to study the away-side medium response in mid-central Au+Au collisions. We argue that a left/right asymmetry may appear at the away-side by selecting triggers separately in the left and right side of the reaction plane. A simple model estimation suggests that the magnitude of such asymmetry could reach 30% with details depends on the medium response mechanisms. This asymmetry, if observed, can help to distinguish competing theoretical models.
The event generator based on the higher-twist energy loss formalism -- Modular All Twist Transverse-scattering Elastic-drag and Radiation (MATTER) -- is further developed and coupled to a hydrodynamic model for studying jet modification in relativistic nuclear collisions. The probability of parton splitting is calculated using the Sudakov form factor that is constructed by a combination of vacuum and medium-induced splitting functions; and the full parton showers are simulated, including both energy-momentum and space-time evolutions of all jet partons. With the assumption that partons below a…
We study the modifications of jets created in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies. The inherent hierarchy of scales governing the jet evolution allows to distinguish a leading jet structure, which interacts coherently with the medium as a single color charge, from softer sub-structures that will be sensitive to effects of color decoherence. We argue how this separation comes about and show that this picture is consistent with experimental data on reconstructed jets at the LHC, providing a quantitative description simultaneously of the jet nuclear modification factor, the missing energy in di-…
We study the multiplicity dependence of jet structures in pp collisions using Monte Carlo event generators. We give predictions for multiplicity-differential jet structures and present evidence for a non-trivial jet shape dependence on charged hadron event multiplicity, that can be used as a sensitive tool to experimentally differentiate between equally well-preforming simulation tunes. We also propose a way to validate the presence and extent of effects such as multiple parton interactions (MPI) or color reconnection (CR), based on the detection of non-trivial jet shape modification in high-m…
This text contains a summary and personal perspective on the current status and challenges of jet quenching physics as portrayed by the presentations delivered at the 12th International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes of High-Energy Nuclear Collisions (Hard Probes 2024) which took place in September 2024 in Nagasaki, Japan.
We show the sensitivity of groomed jet substructure measurements to the finite resolution power of the QGP to disentangle multiple energetic partons, as produced by QCD jets, that traverse it simultaneously. We illustrate these effects by studying Soft Dropped observables within a hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet-medium interactions. By analysing Monte-Carlo-generated jet data in heavy ion collisions, we show that the angular structure of these type of observables is sensitive to the value of the QGP resolution length.
Jet shape measurements are strongly suggested to explore the microscopic evolution mechanism of parton-medium interaction in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, jet shape modifications are quantified by fragmentation function $F(z)$, relative momentum $p_{T}^{rel}$, density of charged particles $ρ(r)$, jet angularity $girth$, jet momentum dispersion $p_{T}^{Disp}$ and $LeSub$ for proton-proton collisions at $900GeV$, $5.02TeV$, $7TeV$ and $13TeV$, as well as for lead-lead collisions at $2.76TeV$ and $5.02TeV$. A differential jet shape parameters $D_{girth}$ is proposed and …
We have implemented the LPM effect into a microscopic transport model with partonic degrees of freedom by following the algorithm of Zapp & Wiedemann. The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect is a quantum interference process that modifies the emission of radiation in the presence of a dense medium. In QCD this results in a quadratic length dependence for radiative energy loss. This is an important effect for the modification of jets by their passage through the QGP. We verify the leading parton energy loss in the model against the leading order Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharo…
A U.S.-based Electron-Ion Collider will provide the ultimate capability to determine both the structure and properties of nucleons and nuclei, as well as how matter and energy can be transported through a strongly interacting quantum mechanical environment. The production and propagation of long-lived heavy subatomic particles is a unique and critical part of this planned decade-long research program. In these proceedings we report the derivation of all branching processes in nuclei that lead to a modification of semi-inclusive hadron production, jet cross sections, and jet substructure when c…
The in-medium modification of the scale dependence of the fragmentation function in dense matter, brought about by higher twist corrections to the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations, is derived. A phenomenologically motivated resummation is outlined which incorporates the next-to-leading twist single gluon emission kernel along with the vacuum emission kernel and provides an in-medium virtuality evolution of the final fragmentation function of a hard jet propagating through dense matter. The concept of a fragmentation function is generalized to include a dep…
The nearly perfect fluid-like nature of the Quark Gluon Plasma may be understood through two key experimental signatures: collective flow and jet suppression. Event-by-event relativistic viscous hydrodynamics (with an extremely small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio) has been very successful at describing collective flow observables for the last 7 years. More recently, the effects of event-by-event fluctuations have been studied in the context of high $p_T$ particles that lose energy as they pass through the dense Quark Gluon Plasma liquid. In this summary of the corresponding plenary …
We study the fragmentation of a jet propagating in a dense quark-gluon plasma. Using a leading, double-logarithmic approximation in perturbative QCD, we compute for the first time the effects of the medium on the vacuum-like emissions. We show that, due to the scatterings off the plasma, the in-medium parton showers differ from the vacuum ones in two crucial aspects: their phase-space is reduced and the first emission outside the medium can violate angular ordering. We compute the jet fragmentation function and find results in qualitative agreement with measurements at the LHC.
Jet substructure observables are crucial for exploring the effects of the hot, dense medium and differentiating between quark and gluon jets. In this paper, we investigate the modification of jet shape by calculating the differential girth at LHC energies, ranging from pp to Pb--Pb collisions. The differential girth distribution exhibits a wave-like pattern, which offers a better explanation for the radial spreading of jet energy and large-angle radiation effects. We fit the differential girth distribution with a sine wave function to obtain the amplitude, angular frequency, initial phase, and…
The jet quenching phenomenon in heavy ion collisions provides a strong evidence of the modification of parton shower in the quark-gluon plasma. This contribution focuses on the hard probes of QGP using jets and summarizes the new theoretical progress of jet substructure modification studies using effective field theory techniques. We emphasize the important role of jet substructure observables as they probe various aspects of the jet formation mechanism and allow us to study the medium properties in great details. The precise calculations require the systematic resummation and consistently inc…
We discuss the possibility to observe hadron modification in hot matter via the correlation of identical particles. We find that the hadron modification causes a new type of correlation, back-to-back correlation.
The computation of hard processes in hadronic collisions is a major success of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The environment of heavy-ion collisions offers the opportunity to embed such hard processes into a soft medium which is created simultaneously and study the medium-induced modifications. On the level of single high transverse momentum hadrons, a reduction in yield, the so-called quenching is observed. However, on the level of jets, the energy-momentum flux carried by hadrons is conserved, i.e. the effect of the medium is a redistribution of energy and momentum, and statements abo…
