We study the change of the minimal degree of a logarithmic derivation of a hyperplane arrangement under the addition or the deletion of a hyperplane, and give a number of applications. First, we prove the existence of Tjurina maximal line arrangements in a lot of new situations. Then, starting with Ziegler's example of a pair of arrangements of $d=9$ lines with $n_3=6$ triple points in addition to some double points, having the same combinatorics, but distinct minimal degree of a logarithmic derivation, we construct new examples of such pairs, for any number $d\geq 9$ of lines, and any number $n_3\geq 6$ of triple points. Moreover, we show that such examples are not possible for line arrangements having only double and triple points, with $n_3 \leq 5$.
In the theory of hyperplane arrangements, the most important and difficult problem is the combinatorial dependency of several properties. In this atricle, we prove that Terao's celebrated addition-deletion theorem for free arrangements is combinatorial, i.e., whether you can apply it depends only on the intersection lattice of arrangements. The proof is based on a classical technique. Since some parts are already completed recently, we prove the rest part, i.e., the combinatoriality of the addition theorem. As a corollary, we can define a new class of free arrangements called the additionally …
We show that the deletion theorem of a free arrangement is combinatorial, i.e., whether we can delete a hyperplane from a free arrangement keeping freeness depends only on the intersection lattice. In fact, we give an explicit sufficient and necessary condition for the deletion theorem in terms of characteristic polynomials. This gives a lot of corollaries including the existence of free filtrations. The proof is based on the result about the form of minimal generators of a logarithmic derivation module of a multiarrangement which satisfies the $b_2$-equality.
The addition-deletion theorems for hyperplane arrangements, which were originally shown in [H. Terao, Arrangements of hyperplanes and their freeness I, II. J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo Sect. IA Math. 27 (1980), 293--320], provide useful ways to construct examples of free arrangements. In this article, we prove addition-deletion theorems for multiarrangements. A key to the generalization is the definition of a new multiplicity, called the Euler multiplicity, of a restricted multiarrangement. We compute the Euler multiplicities in many cases. Then we apply the addition-deletion theorems to various a…
In this paper, we recover the characteristic polynomial of an arrangement of hyperplanes by computing the rational equivalence class of the variety defined by the logarithmic ideal of the arrangement. The logarithmic ideal was introduced in [arXiv:0907.0896v2] in a study of the critical points of the master function. The above result is used to understand the asymptotic behavior the Hilbert series of the logarithmic ideal. As an application, we prove the Solomon-Terao formula under the tame hypothesis by identifying each side of the formula with a certain specialization of the Hilbert series o…
We propose an approach to study logarithmic sheaves T(-log A) associated with a hyperplane arrangements A on the projective space, based on projective duality, direct image functors and vector bundles methods. We focus on freeness of line arrangements having a point with high multiplicity.
We describe dualities and complexes of logarithmic forms and differentials for central affine and corresponding projective arrangements. We generalize the Borel-Serre formula from vector bundles to sheaves on projective d-space with locally free resolutions of length one. Combining these results we present a generalization of a formula due to Mustata and Schenck, relating the Poincare polynomial of an arrangement in projective 3-space (or a locally tame arrangement in projective d-space with zero-dimensional non-free locus) to the total Chern polynomial of its sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms.
Paolo Aluffi showed that the Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson class of the complement of a free arrangement agrees with the total Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along the arrangement. We describe the defect of equality of the two classes for locally tame arrangements with isolated non-free singular loci.
We study the Hadamard product of the linear forms defining a hyperplane arrangement with those of its dual, which we view as generating an ideal in a certain polynomial ring. We use this ideal, which we call the ideal of pairs, to study logarithmic derivations and critical set varieties of arrangements in a way which is symmetric with respect to matroid duality. Our main result exhibits the variety of the ideal of pairs as a subspace arrangement whose components correspond to cyclic flats of the arrangement. As a corollary, we are able to give geometric explanations of some freeness and projec…
Let $W$ be a finite irreducible real reflection group, which is a Coxeter group. We explicitly construct a basis for the module of differential 1-forms with logarithmic poles along the Coxeter arrangement by using a primitive derivation. As a consequence, we extend the Hodge filtration, indexed by nonnegative integers, into a filtration indexed by all integers. This filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of poles. The results are translated into the derivation case.
We consider deformations of the Weyl arrangement of type $A_2$, which include the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. These last ones are well-known to be free. We study their sheaves of logarithmic vector fields in all other cases, and show that they are Steiner bundles. Also, we determine explicitly their unstable lines. As a corollary, some counter-examples to the shift isomorphism problem are given.
We investigate the arrangement of hypersurfaces on a nonsingular varieties whose associated logarithmic vector bundle is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (for short, aCM), and prove that the projective space is the only smooth complete intersection with Picard rank one that admits an aCM logarithmic vector bundle. We also obtain a number of results on aCM logarithmic vector bundles over several specific varieties. As an opposite situation we investigate the Torelli-type problem that the logarithmic cohomology determines the arrangement.
Let Y be a divisor on a smooth algebraic variety X. We investigate the geometry of the Jacobian scheme of Y, homological invariants derived from logarithmic differential forms along Y, and their relationship with the property that Y is a free divisor. We consider arrangements of hyperplanes as a source of examples and counterexamples. In particular, we make a complete calculation of the local cohomology of logarithmic forms of generic hyperplane arrangements.
We give a formula relating the total Tjurina number and the generic splitting type of the bundle of logarithmic vector fields associated to a reduced plane curve. By using it, we give a characterization of nearly free curves in terms of splitting types. Several applications to free and nearly free arrangements of lines are also given, in particular a proof of a form of Terao's Conjecture for arrangements having a line with at most 4 intersection points.
A reduced divisor on a nonsingular variety defines the sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms. We introduce a certain coherent sheaf whose double dual coincides with this sheaf. It has some nice properties, for example, the residue exact sequence still holds even when the divisor is singular, and also it has a simple locally free resolution. We specialize to the case when the divisor is an arrangement of hyperplanes in projective space, and relate the properties of stability of the sheaf with the combinatorics of the arrangement. We also extend a Torelli type theorem to non generic arrangements which al…
We establish the relationship between the cohomology of a certain sheaf on the intersection lattice of a hyperplane arrangement introduced by Yuzvinsky and the cohomology of the coherent sheaf on punctured affine space, respectively projective space associated to the module of logarithmic vector fields along the arrangement. Our main result gives a Künneth formula connecting the cohomology theories, answering a question by Yoshinaga. This, in turn, provides a characterization of the projective dimension of the module of logarithmic vector fields and yields a new proof of Yuzvinsky's freeness c…
Let $ \mathcal{D} = \{D_{1}, ..., D_{\ell}\} $ be a multi-degree arrangement with normal crossings on the complex projective space $ \mathbf{P}^{n} $, with degrees $ d_{1}, ..., d_{\ell} $; let $ Ω_{\mathbf{P}^{n}}^{1}(\log \mathcal{D}) $ be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. First we prove a Torelli type theorem when $ \mathcal{D} $ has a sufficiently large number of components by recovering them as unstable smooth irreducible degree-$ d_{i} $ hypersurfaces of $ Ω_{\mathbf{P}^{n}}^{1}(\log \mathcal{D}) $. Then, when $ n = 2 $, by describing the moduli spaces containing $ Ω_{\mathbf{P}^{2}…
Let D = {D_{1},...,D_{l}} be an arrangement of smooth hypersurfaces with normal crossings on the complex projective space P^n and let Ω^{1}_{P^n}(log D) be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. Following [1], we show that Ω^{1}_{P^n}(log D) admits a resolution of lenght 1 which explicitly depends on the degrees and on the equations of D_{1},...,D_{l}. Then we prove a Torelli type theorem when all the D_{i}'s have the same degree d and l >= {{n+d} \choose {d}}+3: indeed, we recover the components of D as unstable smooth hypersurfaces of Ω^{1}_{P^n}(log D). Finally we analyze the cases of one q…
We study the logarithmic vector bundles associated to arrangements of smooth irreducible curves with small degree on the blow-up of the projective plane at one point. We then investigate whether they are Torelli arrangements, that is, they can be recovered from the attached logarithmic vector bundles.
For an essential, central hyperplane arrangement A in V=k^{n+1}, we show that Ω^1(A) (the module of logarithmic one forms with poles along A) gives rise to a locally free sheaf on P^n if and only if for all X in L_A with rank X<dim V, the module Ω^1(A_X) is free. Our main result is that in this case the Poicare polynomial of A is essentially the Chern polynomial. The proof is based on a result of Solomon and Terao and on a formula we give for the Chern polynomial of a bundle E on P^n in terms of the Hilbert series of \oplus_m H^0(\wedge^iE(m)). If Ω^1(A)has projective dimension one and is loca…
Let $ \mathcal{D} = \{D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell}\} $ be an arrangement of smooth hypersurfaces with normal crossings on the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ and let $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. Our aim is to study the injectivity of the correspondence $ \mathcal{D} \longrightarrow Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $. In order to do that, we first show that $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ admits a resolution of length $ 1 $ depending on the degrees and on the equations of $ D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell} $. Then, we pro…
We show that the maximum likelihood degree of a smooth very affine variety is equal to the signed topological Euler characteristic. This generalizes Orlik and Terao's solution to Varchenko's conjecture on complements of hyperplane arrangements to smooth very affine varieties. For very affine varieties satisfying a genericity condition at infinity, the result is further strengthened to relate the variety of critical points to the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class. The strengthened version recovers the geometric deletion-restriction formula of Denham et al. for arrangement complements, and general…
The Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along a simple normal crossing divisor equals the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the complement of the divisor. We extend this equality to more general divisors, which are locally analytically isomorphic to free hyperplane arrangements.
Many papers are devoted to study logarithmic sheaves associated to reduced divisors, in particular logarithmic bundles associated to plane curves since forty years in differential and algebraic topology or geometry. An interesting family of these curves are the so-called free ones for which the associated logarithmic sheaf is the direct sum of two line bundles. When the curve is a finite set of distinct lines (i.e. a line arrangement), Terao conjectured thirty years ago that its freeness depends only on its combinatorics. A lot of efforts were done to prove it but at this time it is only prove…
Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us …
We investigate the logarithmic bundles associated to arrangements of hypersurfaces with a fixed degree in a smooth projective variety. We then specialize to the case when the variety is a quadric hypersurface and a multiprojective space to prove a Torelli type theorem in some cases.
Any arrangement of hyperplanes in general position in $P^n$ can be regarded as a divisor with normal crossing. We study the bundles of logarithmic 1-forms corresponding to such divisors` from the point of view of classification of vector bundles on $P^n$. It turns out that all such bundles are stable. The study of jumping lines of these bundles gives a unified treatment of several classical constructions associating a curve to a collection of points in $P^n$. The main result of the paper is "Torelli theorem" which says that the collection of hyperplanes can be recovered from the isomorphism cl…
The first part of this paper is a survey on algebro-geometric aspects of sheaves of logarithmic vector fields of hyperplane arrangements. In the second part we prove that the relative de Rham cohomology (of degree two) of ADE-type adjoint quotient map is naturally isomorphic to the module of certain multiderivations. The isomorphism is obtained by the Gauss-Manin derivative of the Kostant-Kirillov form.
We introduce a new definition of a generalized logarithmic module of multiarrangements by uniting those of the logarithmic derivation and the differential modules. This module is realized as a logarithmic derivation module of an arrangement of hyperplanes with a multiplicity consisting of both positive and negative integers. We consider several properties of this module including Saito's criterion and reflexivity. As applications, we prove a shift isomorphism and duality of some Coxeter multiarrangements by using the primitive derivation.
Associated to an arrangement of projective hyperplanes A is the module D(A), which consists of derivations tangent to A. We study D(A) when A is a configuration of lines in the projective plane. In this setting, we relate the deletion/restriction construction used in the study of hyperplane arrangements to elementary modifications of bundles. This allows us to obtain bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of D(A). We also give simple combinatorial conditions for the associated bundle to be stable, and describe its jump lines. These regularity bounds and stability considerations impose co…
Let $C:f=0$ be a reduced curve in the complex projective plane. The minimal degree $mdr(f)$ of a Jacobian syzygy for $f$, which is the same as the minimal degree of a derivation killing $f$, is an important invariant of the curve $C$, for instance it can be used to determined whether $C$ is free or nearly free. In this note we study the relations of this invariant $mdr(f)$ with a decomposition of $C$ as a union of two curves $C_1$ and $C_2$, without common irreducible components. When all the singularities that occur are quasihomogeneous, a result by Schenck, Terao and Yoshinaga yields finer i…
We study cohomology with coefficients in a rank one local system on the complement of an arrangement of hyperplanes $\A$. The cohomology plays an important role for the theory of generalized hypergeometric functions. We combine several known results to construct explicit bases of logarithmic forms for the only non-vanishing cohomology group, under some nonresonance conditions on the local system, for any arrangement $\A$. The bases are determined by a linear ordering of the hyperplanes, and are indexed by certain ``no-broken-circuits" bases of $\A$. The basic forms depend on the local system, …

We prove that a logarithmic foliation corresponding to a generic line arrangement of $d+1 \geq 3$ lines in the complex plane, with pairwise natural and co-prime residues, is a smooth point of the center set of plane foliations (vector fields) of degree $d$.
In this work, we investigate the positivity of logarithmic and orbifold cotangent bundles along hyperplane arrangements in projective spaces. We show that a very interesting example given by Noguchi (as early as in 1986) can be pushed further to a very great extent. Key ingredients of our approach are the use of Fermat covers and the production of explicit global symmetric differentials. This allows us to obtain some new results in the vein of several classical results of the literature on hyperplane arrangements. These seem very natural using the modern point of view of augmented base loci, a…
Let \A be an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^\ell$ with complement $U$. Let $f_1, \..., f_n$ be linear polynomials defining the hyperplanes of \A, and $A^\cdot$ the algebra of differential forms generated by the 1-forms $d \log f_1, \..., d \log f_n$. To each $l \in \C^n$ we associate the master function $Φ=Φ_l = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{l_i}$ on $U$ and the closed logarithmic 1-form $ω= d \log Φ$. We assume $ω$ is an element of a rational linear subspace $D$ of $A^1$ of dimension $q>1$ such that the multiplication map $\bigwedge^k(D) \to A^k$ is zero for $p<k\leq q$. With this assumption, we p…
