The so-called ultraviolet (UV) upturn of elliptical galaxies is a phenomenon characterised by the up-rise of their fluxes in bluer wavelengths, typically in the 1,200-2,500A range. This work aims at estimating the rate of occurrence of the UV upturn over the entire red-sequence population of galaxies that show significant UV emission. This assessment is made considering it as function of three parameters: redshift, stellar mass, and -- what may seem counter-intuitive at first -- emission-line classification. We built a multiwavelength spectro-photometric catalogue from the Galaxy Mass Assembly survey, together with aperture-matched data from Galaxy Evolution Explorer Medium-Depth Imaging Survey (MIS) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey, covering the redshift range between 0.06 and 0.40. From this sample, we analyse the UV emission among UV bright galaxies, by selecting those that occupy the red-sequence locus in the (NUV-r) x (FUV-NUV) chart; then, we stratify the sample by their emission-line classes. To that end, we make use of emission-line diagnostic diagrams, focusing the analysis in retired/passive lineless galaxies. Then, a Bayesian logistic model was built to simultaneously deal with the effects of all galaxy properties (including emission-line classification or lack thereof). The main results show that retired/passive systems host an up-rise in the fraction of UV upturn or redshifts between 0.06 and 0.25, followed by an in-fall up to 0.35. Additionally, we show that the fraction of UV upturn hosts rises with increasing stellar mass.
Ultraviolet (UV) emission from galaxies is associated with hot components, whether from stellar sources or not. By making use of colour-colour diagrams, early-type galaxies (ETGs) can be classified in terms of their UV emission in mainly three categories: residual star-formation, UV weak, and UV upturn. This thesis aims at investigating galaxies presenting UV upturn by comparing them to UV weak systems. This investigation has three fronts: (i) the assessment of the evolution in redshift (z) and stellar mass (logM*) of the fraction of UV upturn systems in terms of the total of UV bright ETGs; (…
We have analysed the strength of the UV upturn in red sequence galaxies with luminosities reaching to below the $L^*$ point within four clusters at $z$ = 0.3, 0.55 \& 0.7. We find that the incidence and strength of the upturn remains constant up to $z=0.55$. In comparison, the prevalence and strength of the UV upturn is significantly diminished in the $z=0.7$ cluster, implying that the stellar population responsible for the upturn in a typical red sequence galaxy is only just developing at this redshift and is essentially fully-developed by $\sim 1$ Gyr later. Of all the mainstream models that…
CONTEXT:At low redshift, early-type galaxies often exhibit a rising flux with decreasing wavelength in the 1000-2500 Å range, called "UV upturn". The origin of this phenomenon is debated, and its evolution with redshift is poorly constrained. The observed GALEX FUV-NUV color can be used to probe the UV upturn approximately to redshift 0.5. AIMS: We provide constraints on the existence of the UV upturn up to redshift $\sim$ 0.4 in the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG) located behind the Virgo cluster, using data from the GUViCS survey. METHODS:We estimate the GALEX far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV)…
We derive the evolution of the ultraviolet upturn colour from a sample of field luminous red galaxies at $0.3 < z < 0.7$ with $-24 < M_r < -21.5$. No individual objects are securely detected, so we stack several hundred galaxies within absolute magnitude and redshift intervals. We find that the colour of the ultraviolet upturn (in observed $NUV-i$ which is approximately equivalent to the classical $FUV-V$ at the redshifts of our targets) does not change strongly with redshift to $z=0.7$. This behaviour is similar to that observed in cluster ellipticals over this same mass range and at similar …
It is suspected that the ultraviolet (UV) upturn phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and extended horizontal-branch stars in globular clusters have a common origin. An extremely high abundance of helium (Y~0.4) allows for a working hypothesis, but its origin is unclear. Peng & Nagai (2009) proposed that primordial helium sedimentation in dark haloes over cosmic timescales may lead to extreme helium abundances in galaxy cluster centers. In this scenario UV upturn should be restricted to brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) only. This is a clear and testable prediction. We present tests of this hypot…
We have measured the strength of the UV upturn for red sequence galaxies in the Abell~1689 cluster at $z=0.18$, reaching to or below the $L^*$ level and therefore probing the general evolution of the upturn phenomenon. We find that the range of UV upturn strengths in the population as a whole has not declined over the past 2.2 Gyrs. This is consistent with a model where hot horizontal branch stars, produced by a Helium-enriched population, provide the required UV flux. Based on local counterparts, this interpretation of the result implies Helium abundances of at least 1.5 times the primordial …
We exploit stellar population models of absorption line indices in the ultraviolet (from 2000 - 3200 Angstrom) to study the spectra of massive galaxies. Our central aim is to investigate the occurrence at high-redshift of the UV upturn, i.e. the increased UV emission due to old stars observed in massive galaxies and spiral bulges in the local Universe. We use a large (~275,000) sample of z~0.6 massive (log M*/Msun > 11.5) galaxies using both individual spectra and stacks and employ a suite of models including a UV contribution from old populations, spanning various effective temperatures, fuel…
We use data from the GAMA and GALEX surveys to demonstrate that the UV upturn, an unexpected excess of ultraviolet flux from a hot stellar component, seen in the spectra of many early-type galaxies, arises from processes internal to individual galaxies with no measurable influence from the galaxies' larger environment. We first define a clean sample of passive galaxies without a significant contribution to their UV flux from low-level star formation. We confirm that galaxies with the optical colours of red sequence galaxies often have signs of residual star formation, which, without other info…
We explore the dependence of UV upturn colours in early type cluster galaxies on the properties of their parent clusters (such as velocity dispersion and X-ray luminosity) and on the positions and kinematics of galaxies within them. We use a sample of 24 nearby clusters with highly complete spectroscopy and optical/infrared data to select a suitable sample of red sequence galaxies, whose FUV and NUV magnitudes we measure from archival GALEX data. Our results show that the UV upturn colour has no dependence on cluster properties and has the same range in all clusters. There is also no dependenc…
Using GALEX, UVOT and optical photometry, we explore the prevalence and strength of the UV-upturn in the spectra of quiescent early type galaxies in several nearby clusters. Even for galaxies with completely passive optical colours, there is a large spread in vacuum UV colour consistent with almost all having some UV upturn component. Combining GALEX and UVOT data below 3000Å, we generate for the first time comparatively detailed UV SEDs for Coma cluster galaxies. Fitting the UV upturn component with a blackbody, twenty six of these show a range of characteristic temperatures (10000--21000K) f…
We measure the near-UV (rest-frame $\sim 2400$Å) to optical color for early-type galaxies in 12 clusters at $0.3 < z < 1.0$. We show that this is a suitable proxy for the more common far-ultraviolet bandpass used to measure the ultraviolet upturn and find that the upturn is detected to $z=0.6$ in these data, in agreement with previous work. We find evidence that the strength of the upturn starts to wane beyond this redshift and largely disappears at $z=1$. Our data is most consistent with models where early-type galaxies contain minority stellar populations with non-cosmological helium abundan…
The ultraviolet (UV) upturn is characterised by an unexpected up-rise of the UV flux in quiescent galaxies between the Lyman limit and 2500Å. By making use of colour-colour diagrams, one can subdivide UV bright red-sequence galaxies in two groups: UV weak and upturn. With these two groups, we propose a comparison between their stellar population properties with the goal of establishing differences and similarities between them. We make use of propensity score matching (PSM) to mitigate potential biases between the two samples, by selecting similar objects in terms of redshift and stellar mass.…
We study the stellar properties of 44 face-on spiral galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey via full spectrum fitting techniques. We compare the age profiles with the surface brightness distribution in order to highlight differences between profile types (type I, exponential profile; and II, down-bending profile). We observe an upturn ("U-shape") in the age profiles for 17 out of these 44 galaxies with reliable stellar information up to their outer parts. This "U-shape" is not a unique feature for type II galaxies but can be observed in type I as well. These findings su…

We present a new deep determination of the spectroscopic LF within the virial radius of the nearby and massive Abell\,85 (A85) cluster down to the dwarf regime (M* + 6) using VLT/VIMOS spectra for $\sim 2000$ galaxies with m$_r \leq 21$ mag and $\langle μ_{e,r} \rangle \leq 24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The resulting LF from 438 cluster members is best modelled by a double Schechter function due to the presence of a statistically significant upturn at the faint-end. The amplitude of this upturn ($α_{f} = -1.58^{+0.19}_{-0.15}$), however, is much smaller than that of the SDSS composite photometric clu…
We characterize the luminosity functions of galaxies residing in $z\sim0$ groups and clusters over the broadest ranges of luminosity and mass reachable by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our measurements cover four orders of magnitude in luminosity, down to about $M_r=-12$ mag or $L=10^7\,L_\odot$, and three orders of magnitude in halo mass, from $10^{12}$ to $10^{15} \, {\rm M}_\odot$. We find a characteristic scale, $M_r\sim-18$ mag or $L\sim10^9\, L_\odot$, below which the slope of the luminosity function becomes systematically steeper. This trend is present for all halo masses and originates…
We present GALEX far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular H_beta absorption higher than e…
We report a photometric study of globular clusters (GCs), ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), and dwarf galaxies in the giant merging galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at z = 0.308. Color-magnitude diagrams of the point sources derived from deep F814W (restframe r') and F105W (restframe I) images of Abell 2744 in the Hubble Space Telescope Frontier Field show a rich population of point sources whose colors are similar to those of typical GCs. These sources are as bright as -14.9 < M_r' < -11.4 (26.0 < F814W < 29.5) mag, being mostly UCDs and bright GCs in Abell 2744. The luminosity function (LF) of these sour…
We use the most recent data release (DR9) of the DESI legacy imaging survey and SDSS galaxy groups to measure the conditional luminosity function (CLF) for groups with halo mass $M_{\rm h}\ge 10^{12}M_{\odot}$ and redshift $0.01\le z\le 0.08$, down to a limiting $r$-band magnitude of $M_{\rm r}=-10\sim-12$. For a given halo mass we measure the CLF for the total satellite population, as well as separately for the red and blue populations classified using the $(g-z)$ color. We find a clear faint-end upturn in the CLF of red satellites, with a slope $α\approx-1.8$ which is almost independent of h…
Models of galaxy formation in a cosmological context predict that massive disk galaxies should have structured extended stellar halos. Recent studies in integrated light, however, report a few galaxies, including the nearby disk galaxy M101, that have no measurable stellar halos to the detection limit. We aim to quantify the stellar content and structure of M101's outskirts by resolving its stars. We present the photometry of its stars based on deep F606W and F814W images taken with Hubble Space Telescope as part of the GHOSTS survey. The constructed CMDs of stars reach down to two magnitudes …

We measure the r-band galaxy luminosity function (LF) across environments over the redshift range 0<$z$<0.107 using the SDSS. We divide our sample into galaxies residing in large scale voids (void galaxies) and those residing in denser regions (wall galaxies). The best fitting Schechter parameters for void galaxies are: log$Φ^*$= -3.40$\pm$0.03 log(Mpc$^{-3}$), $M^*$= -19.88$\pm$0.05, and $α$=-1.20$\pm$0.02. For wall galaxies, the best fitting parameters are: log$Φ^*$=-2.86$\pm$0.02 log(Mpc$^{-3}$), $M^*$=-20.80$\pm$0.03, and $α$=-1.16$\pm$0.01. We find a shift in the characteristic magnitude,…

We computed the luminosity of simulated galaxies of the C-EAGLE project, a suite of 30 high-resolution zoom-in simulations of galaxy clusters based on the EAGLE simulation. The AB magnitudes are derived for different spectral bands, from ultraviolet to infrared, using the simple stellar population modeling based on the E-MILES stellar spectra library. We take into account obscuration due to dust in star forming regions and diffuse interstellar medium. The $g-r$ colour-stellar mass diagram, at z=0.1, presents a defined red sequence, reaching $g-r \simeq 0.8$, 0.05 dex redder than EAGLE at high …
We use a new telescope concept, the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, to study the low surface brightness outskirts of the spiral galaxy M101. The radial surface brightness profile is measured down to mu_g ~ 32 mag/arcsec^2, a depth that approaches the sensitivity of star count studies in the Local Group. We convert surface brightness to surface mass density using the radial g-r color profile. The mass density profile shows no significant upturn at large radius and is well-approximated by a simple bulge + disk model out to R = 70 kpc, corresponding to 18 disk scale lengths. Fitting a bulge + disk + h…
Brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) have grown by accreting numerous smaller galaxies and can be used as tracers of cluster formation and evolution in the cosmic web. However, there is still a controversy on the main epoch of formation of BCGs, since some authors believe they have already formed before redshift z=2, while others still find them to evolve at more recent epochs. We aim to analyse the physical properties of a large sample of BCGs covering a wide redshift range up to z=1.8 and analysed in a homogeneous way, to see if their characteristics vary with redshift. As a first step, we also…
Direct observational searches for Population III (Pop III) stars at high redshift are faced with the question of how to select the most promising targets for spectroscopic follow-up. To help answer this, we use a large-scale cosmological simulation, augmented with a new subgrid model that tracks the fraction of pristine gas, to follow the evolution of high-redshift galaxies and the Pop III stars they contain. We generate rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions for our galaxies and find that they are consistent with current $z \ge 7 $ observations. Throughout the redshift range $7 \le …
We present spectroscopic measurements for 71 galaxies associated with 62 of the brightest high-redshift submillimeter sources from the Southern fields of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), while targeting 85 sources which resolved into 142. We have obtained robust redshift measurements for all sources using the 12-m Array and an efficient tuning of ALMA to optimise its use as a redshift hunter, with 73 per cent of the sources having a robust redshift identification. Nine of these redshift identifications also rely on observations from the Atacama Compact Array. T…
The star formation rate in galaxies is well known to correlate with stellar mass (the `star-forming main sequence'). Here we extend this further to explore any additional dependence on galaxy surface brightness, a proxy for stellar mass surface density. We use a large sample of low redshift ($z \leq 0.08$) galaxies from the GAMA survey which have both SED derived star formation rates and photometric bulge-disc decompositions, the latter providing measures of disc surface brightness and disc masses. Using two samples, one of galaxies fitted by a single component with Sérsic index below 2 and on…
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) are believed to have assembled most of their stars early in time and, therefore, should be passively evolving at low redshifts and appear "red-and-dead." However, there have been reports that a minority of low-redshift BCGs still have ongoing star formation rates (SFR) of a few to even $\sim$100 $M_\odot/yr$. Such BCGs are found in "cool-core" ("CC") clusters, and their star formation is thought to be fueled by "cooling flow." To further investigate the implications of low-redshift, star-forming BCGs, we perform a systematic search using the 22$μ$m data ("W4" …
Context. Knowing the exact shape of the UV luminosity function of high-redshift galaxies is important in order to understand the star formation history of the early universe. However, the uncertainties, especially at the faint and bright ends of the LFs, are still significant. Aims. In this paper, we study the UV luminosity function of redshift z = 2.5 - 4.5 galaxies in 2.38 deg^2 of ALHAMBRA data with I <= 24. Thanks to the large area covered by ALHAMBRA, we particularly constrain the bright end of the luminosity function. We also calculate the cosmic variance and the corresponding bias value…
We analysed a population of bright-red (BR) stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy Leo A by using multicolour photometry data obtained with the Subaru/Suprime-Cam ($B$, $V$, $R$, $I$, $Hα$) and HST/ACS ($F475W$ & $F814W$) instruments. In order to separate the Milky Way (MW) and Leo A populations of red stars, we developed a photometric method, which enabled us to study the spatial distribution of BR stars within the Leo A galaxy. We found a significant difference in the scale-length (S-L) of radial distributions of the "young" and "old" red giant branch (RGB) stars -- $0.'82 \pm 0.'04$ and $1.'53…
By cross-matching the currently largest optical catalog of galaxy clusters and the NVSS radio survey database, we obtain the largest complete sample of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the redshift range of 0.05<z<0.45, which have radio emission and redshift information. We confirm that more powerful radio BCGs tend to be these optically very bight galaxies located in more relaxed clusters. We derived the radio luminosity functions of BCGs from the largest complete sample of BCGs, and find that the functions depend on the optical luminosity of BCGs and the dynamical state of galaxy cluster…
Studying bright ($M_B<-20$), intermediate-redshift ($0.4<z<1.0$), disc dominated ($n_B<2.5$) galaxies from HST/ACS and WFC3 in Chandra Deep Field South, in rest-frame B and I-band, we found a new class of bulges which is brighter and more compact than ellipticals. We refer to them as "Bright, Compact Bulges" (BCBs) - they resemble neither classical nor pseudo-bulges and constitute $\sim12$% of the total bulge population at these redshifts. Examining free-bulge $+$ disc decomposition sample and elliptical galaxy sample from Simard et al. (2011), we find that only $\sim0.2$% of the bulges can be…
We investigate the star forming activity of a sample of infrared (IR)-bright dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) that show an extreme red color in the optical and IR regime, $(i - [22])_{\rm AB} > 7.0$. Combining an IR-bright DOG sample with the flux at 22 $μ$m $>$ 3.8 mJy discovered by Toba & Nagao (2016) with IRAS faint source catalog version 2 and AKARI far-IR (FIR) all-sky survey bright source catalog version 2, we selected 109 DOGs with FIR data. For a subsample of 7 IR-bright DOGs with spectroscopic redshift ($0.07 < z < 1.0$) that was obtained from literature, we estimated their IR luminosity…
We present the first results and design from the redshift z~9-10 Brightest of the Reionizing Galaxies {\it Hubble Space Telescope} survey BoRG[z9-10], aimed at searching for intrinsically luminous unlensed galaxies during the first 700 Myr after the Big Bang. BoRG[z9-10] is the continuation of a multi-year pure-parallel near-IR and optical imaging campaign with the Wide Field Camera 3. The ongoing survey uses five filters, optimized for detecting the most distant objects and offering continuous wavelength coverage from λ=0.35μm to λ=1.7μm. We analyze the initial ~130 arcmin$^2$ of area over 28…
Recent observations have shown that the characteristic luminosity of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function does not significantly evolve at 4 < z < 7 and is approximately M*_UV ~ -21. We investigate this apparent non-evolution by examining a sample of 178 bright, M_UV < -21 galaxies at z=4 to 7, analyzing their stellar populations and host halo masses. Including deep Spitzer/IRAC imaging to constrain the rest-frame optical light, we find that M*_UV galaxies at z=4-7 have similar stellar masses of log(M/Msol)=9.6-9.9 and are thus relatively massive for these high redshifts. Howeve…
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will execute a nearly magnitude-limited survey of low redshift galaxies ($0.05 \leq z \leq 0.4$, median $z \approx 0.2$). Clustering analyses of this Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) will yield the most precise measurements to date of baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions at low redshift. DESI BGS will comprise two target classes: (i) BRIGHT ($r<19.5$~mag), and (ii) FAINT ($19.5<r<20$~mag). Here we present a summary of the star-galaxy separation, and different photometric and geometrical masks, used in BGS to reduce the number of …
We introduce the Ultramarine simulation, an extremely large $N$-body simulation of the structure formation and evolution to redshift 5.5 at which cosmic reionization was just completed. The simulation evolves 2.1 trillion particles within a $512~h^{-1}$Mpc cube and has an unprecedented mass and force resolution for large volume simulations of this kind, $5.6\times 10^6 h^{-1}$M$_\odot$ and $1.2~h^{-1}$kpc, respectively. We present some basic statistical results of the simulation, including the halo mass function, halo bias parameter as well as halo mass-concentration relation at high redshifts…
In the Galactic center nuclear star cluster, bright late-type stars exhibit a flat or even a decreasing surface-density profile, while fainter late-type stars maintain a cusp-like profile. Historically, the lack of red giants in the Galactic center was discovered via the drop in the strength of the CO absorption bandhead by Kris Sellgren et al. (1990), later followed by the stellar number counts based on the high angular resolution near-infrared observations. Several mechanisms were put forward that could have led to the preferential depletion of bright red giants: star-star collisions, tidal …

GB 1508+5714 is a high-redshift blazar ($z$ = 4.3) and a spectrally soft $γ$-ray source has been detected in its direction. By analyzing 11.4-yr {\it Fermi}-LAT data, significant long-term variability of the $γ$-ray source is confirmed. More importantly, a $γ$-ray emission flare appeared in an epoch of several tens of days in year 2018, when the flux is about four times of the value from the global fit. Meanwhile, optical flares displayed in both $r$- and $i$-bands from the {\it Zwicky} Transient Facility light curves. Detections of the simultaneous $γ$-ray and optical brightening provide a de…
