Ultraviolet (UV) emission from galaxies is associated with hot components, whether from stellar sources or not. By making use of colour-colour diagrams, early-type galaxies (ETGs) can be classified in terms of their UV emission in mainly three categories: residual star-formation, UV weak, and UV upturn. This thesis aims at investigating galaxies presenting UV upturn by comparing them to UV weak systems. This investigation has three fronts: (i) the assessment of the evolution in redshift (z) and stellar mass (logM*) of the fraction of UV upturn systems in terms of the total of UV bright ETGs; (ii) the stratification of the first study in terms of emission lines; (iii) the comparison between UV weak and upturn for passive RSGs in terms of their stellar populations. To tackle the first front, a Bayesian logistic model was applied. The second front expands on the first, dividing the sample into emission line classes. The final front is focused on the study of stellar population properties of UV weak and upturn systems, by making use of catalogues from GAMA-DR3. The results show that the fraction of UV upturn systems rises up to z~0.25, followed by a decline which remains to be confirmed. By stratifying the sample into emission line classes, the galaxies classified as retired/passive -- the ones associated with evolved stellar phases -- dominate the behaviour with z and logM*. By analysing the stellar populations of both types of systems, different characteristics emerge such as median ages, metallicities, and time since last burst of star formation. These results seem to indicate that UV upturn systems have narrower star-formation histories, higher metallicities, and slightly older populations.
The so-called ultraviolet (UV) upturn of elliptical galaxies is a phenomenon characterised by the up-rise of their fluxes in bluer wavelengths, typically in the 1,200-2,500A range. This work aims at estimating the rate of occurrence of the UV upturn over the entire red-sequence population of galaxies that show significant UV emission. This assessment is made considering it as function of three parameters: redshift, stellar mass, and -- what may seem counter-intuitive at first -- emission-line classification. We built a multiwavelength spectro-photometric catalogue from the Galaxy Mass Assembly…
Using GALEX, UVOT and optical photometry, we explore the prevalence and strength of the UV-upturn in the spectra of quiescent early type galaxies in several nearby clusters. Even for galaxies with completely passive optical colours, there is a large spread in vacuum UV colour consistent with almost all having some UV upturn component. Combining GALEX and UVOT data below 3000Å, we generate for the first time comparatively detailed UV SEDs for Coma cluster galaxies. Fitting the UV upturn component with a blackbody, twenty six of these show a range of characteristic temperatures (10000--21000K) f…
The ultraviolet (UV) upturn is characterised by an unexpected up-rise of the UV flux in quiescent galaxies between the Lyman limit and 2500Å. By making use of colour-colour diagrams, one can subdivide UV bright red-sequence galaxies in two groups: UV weak and upturn. With these two groups, we propose a comparison between their stellar population properties with the goal of establishing differences and similarities between them. We make use of propensity score matching (PSM) to mitigate potential biases between the two samples, by selecting similar objects in terms of redshift and stellar mass.…

It is suspected that the ultraviolet (UV) upturn phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and extended horizontal-branch stars in globular clusters have a common origin. An extremely high abundance of helium (Y~0.4) allows for a working hypothesis, but its origin is unclear. Peng & Nagai (2009) proposed that primordial helium sedimentation in dark haloes over cosmic timescales may lead to extreme helium abundances in galaxy cluster centers. In this scenario UV upturn should be restricted to brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) only. This is a clear and testable prediction. We present tests of this hypot…
CONTEXT:At low redshift, early-type galaxies often exhibit a rising flux with decreasing wavelength in the 1000-2500 Å range, called "UV upturn". The origin of this phenomenon is debated, and its evolution with redshift is poorly constrained. The observed GALEX FUV-NUV color can be used to probe the UV upturn approximately to redshift 0.5. AIMS: We provide constraints on the existence of the UV upturn up to redshift $\sim$ 0.4 in the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG) located behind the Virgo cluster, using data from the GUViCS survey. METHODS:We estimate the GALEX far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV)…
We exploit stellar population models of absorption line indices in the ultraviolet (from 2000 - 3200 Angstrom) to study the spectra of massive galaxies. Our central aim is to investigate the occurrence at high-redshift of the UV upturn, i.e. the increased UV emission due to old stars observed in massive galaxies and spiral bulges in the local Universe. We use a large (~275,000) sample of z~0.6 massive (log M*/Msun > 11.5) galaxies using both individual spectra and stacks and employ a suite of models including a UV contribution from old populations, spanning various effective temperatures, fuel…
We study the stellar properties of 44 face-on spiral galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey via full spectrum fitting techniques. We compare the age profiles with the surface brightness distribution in order to highlight differences between profile types (type I, exponential profile; and II, down-bending profile). We observe an upturn ("U-shape") in the age profiles for 17 out of these 44 galaxies with reliable stellar information up to their outer parts. This "U-shape" is not a unique feature for type II galaxies but can be observed in type I as well. These findings su…
We present GALEX far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular H_beta absorption higher than e…
We report a photometric study of globular clusters (GCs), ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), and dwarf galaxies in the giant merging galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at z = 0.308. Color-magnitude diagrams of the point sources derived from deep F814W (restframe r') and F105W (restframe I) images of Abell 2744 in the Hubble Space Telescope Frontier Field show a rich population of point sources whose colors are similar to those of typical GCs. These sources are as bright as -14.9 < M_r' < -11.4 (26.0 < F814W < 29.5) mag, being mostly UCDs and bright GCs in Abell 2744. The luminosity function (LF) of these sour…
We have observed 10 interacting galaxy pairs using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GH$α$FaS (Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system) on the $4.2\rm{m}$ William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma. We present here the H$α$ surface brightness, velocity and velocity dispersion maps for the 10 systems we have not previously observed using this technique, as well as the physical properties (sizes, H$α$ luminosities and velocity dispersion) of 1259 HII regions from the full sample. We also derive the physical properties of 1054 HII regions in a sample of 28 isola…
Interacting galaxies are known to have higher global rates of star formation on average than normal galaxies, relative to their stellar masses. Using UV and IR photometry combined with new and published H-alpha images, we have compared the star formation rates of ~700 star forming complexes in 46 nearby interacting galaxy pairs with those of regions in 39 normal spiral galaxies. The interacting galaxies have proportionally more regions with high star formation rates than the spirals. The most extreme regions in the interacting systems lie at the intersections of spiral/tidal structures, where …
We use the most recent data release (DR9) of the DESI legacy imaging survey and SDSS galaxy groups to measure the conditional luminosity function (CLF) for groups with halo mass $M_{\rm h}\ge 10^{12}M_{\odot}$ and redshift $0.01\le z\le 0.08$, down to a limiting $r$-band magnitude of $M_{\rm r}=-10\sim-12$. For a given halo mass we measure the CLF for the total satellite population, as well as separately for the red and blue populations classified using the $(g-z)$ color. We find a clear faint-end upturn in the CLF of red satellites, with a slope $α\approx-1.8$ which is almost independent of h…
We compare the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in M51 identified by the Plateau de Bure Interferometer Whirlpool Arcsecond Survey (PAWS) with GMCs identified in wide-field, high resolution surveys of CO emission in M33 and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We find that GMCs in M51 are larger, brighter and have higher velocity dispersions relative to their size than equivalent structures in M33 and the LMC. These differences imply that there are genuine variations in the average mass surface density of the different GMC populations. To explain this, we propose that the pressure in t…
We assemble a database of 15 HSB and 15 LSB galaxies, for which surface brightness density and spectroscopic rotation curve data are both available and representative for various morphologies. We use this dataset to test the Navarro-Frenk-White, the Einasto, and the pseudo-isothermal sphere dark matter (DM) models. We investigate the compatibility of the pure baryonic model and baryonic plus one of the three DM models with observations on the assembled galaxy database. When a DM component improves the fit with the spectroscopic rotational curve, we rank the models according to the goodness of …
We present the discovery of a gravitationally lensed dust-reddened QSO at $z=2.517$ discovered in a survey for red QSOs by infrared selection. $Hubble~Space~Telescope$ imaging in the WFC3/IR F160W and F125W filters reveals a quadruply lensed system in a cusp configuration. We find that compared to the central image of the cusp, the nearby, brightest image is anomalous by a factor of $\sim7-11$. Although the source is extremely bright in the mid-infrared, a magnification by a factor of $\sim50-120$ places an upper limit of 1.35 mJy on the intrinsic mid-infrared brightness, well below the $WISE~…

We use near-infrared (J-K)-colours of bright 2MASS galaxies, measured within a 7"-radius aperture, to calibrate the Schlegel et al. (1998) DIRBE/IRAS Galactic extinction map at low Galactic latitudes ($|b| < 10^{\rm o}$). Using 3460 galaxies covering a large range in extinction (up to $A_K$ = 1.15 or E(B-V) ~ 3.19), we derive a correction factor $f = 0.83 \pm 0.01$ by fitting a linear regression to the colour-extinction relation, confirming that the Schlegel et al. maps overestimate the extinction. We argue that the use of only a small range in extinction (e.g., $A_K$ < 0.4) increases the unce…
We carried out deep and wide-field near- and mid-infrared observations for a sample of 8 bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). Supplemented with the $Spitzer$ archival data, we have identified and classified 44 to 433 young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with these BRCs. The Class I sources are generally located towards the places with higher extinction and are relatively closer to each other than the Class II sources, confirming that the young protostars are usually found in regions having denser molecular material. On the other hand the comparatively older population, Class II objects, are more ra…
We present a comparative study of a set of star-formation rate tracers based on mid-infrared emission in the 12.81$μ$m [Ne II] line, the 15.56$μ$m [Ne III] line, and emission features from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) between 5.2 and 14.7$μ$m. We calibrate our tracers with the thermal component of the radio continuum emission at 33 GHz from 33 extranuclear star-forming regions observed in nearby galaxies. Correlations between mid-IR emission features and thermal 33 GHz star-formation rates (SFR) show significant metallicity-dependent scatter and offsets. We find similar metallicity-…
We conduct a comprehensive and statistical study of the luminosity functions (LFs) for satellite galaxies, by counting photometric galaxies from HSC, DECaLS and SDSS around isolated central galaxies (ICGs) and paired galaxies from the SDSS/DR7 spectroscopic sample. Results of different surveys show very good agreement. The satellite LFs can be measured down to $M_V\sim-10$, and for central primary galaxies as small as $8.5<\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot<9.2$ and $9.2<\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot<9.9$, implying there are on average 3--8 satellites with $M_V<-10$ around LMC-mass ICGs. The bright end cutoff …
In an effort to probe the origin of surface brightness profile (SBP) breaks widely observed in nearby disk galaxies, we carry out a comparative study of stellar population profiles of 635 disk galaxies selected from the MaNGA spectroscopic survey. We classify our galaxies into single exponential (TI), down-bending (TII) and up-bending (TIII) SBP types, and derive their spin parameters and radial profiles of age/metallicity-sensitive spectral features. Most TII (TIII) galaxies have down-bending (up-bending) star formation rate (SFR) radial profiles, implying that abrupt radial changes of SFR in…
We measured [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe] using spectral synthesis of low-resolution stellar spectroscopy for 70 individual red giant branch stars across four fields spanning the outer disk, Giant Stellar Stream (GSS), and inner halo of M31. Fields at M31-centric projected distances of 23 kpc in the halo, 12 kpc in the halo, 22 kpc in the GSS, and 26 kpc in the outer disk are $α$-enhanced, with $\langle$[$α$/Fe]$\rangle$ = 0.43, 0.50, 0.41, and 0.58, respectively. The 23 kpc and 12 kpc halo fields are relatively metal-poor, with $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$ = $-$1.54 and $-$1.30, whereas the 22 kpc GSS and …

The absence of star formation in the bar region that has been reported for some galaxies can theoretically be explained by shear. However, it is not clear how star-forming (SF) bars fit into this picture and how the dynamical state of the bar is related to other properties of the host galaxy. We used integral-field spectroscopy from VLT/MUSE to investigate how star formation within bars is connected to structural properties of the bar and the host galaxy. We derived spatially resolved H$α$ fluxes from MUSE observations from the CARS survey to estimate star formation rates in the bars of 16 nea…
