Hybrid materials are crucial in photovoltaics where the overall efficiency of the heterostructure is closely related to the level of charge transfer at the interface. Here, using various metal / poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) heterostructure models, we reveal that the level of spontaneous charge transfer and electronic coupling at these interfaces depend on the conformational regularity of the organic polymer deposited on the metal substrate. Using ab-initio quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and heterodyne vibrational sum frequency generation (HD-VSFG) measurements, we show that inducing regio-randomness into the organic polymer modifies the intensity of interfacial electronic states, level of hybridization, density of interfacial charge transfer and the electronic wave function of the material. We present the HD-VSFG responses of the metal/P3HT heterojunctions containing both regio-regular and regio-random P3HT structures and show that the amount of non-resonant signal is closely related to the level of the spontaneous charge transfer at the interface. Thus, by measuring the non-resonant response of the metal/P3HT heterojunctions, the level of spontaneous charge transfer at the interface can be determined.
We report the successful extraction of spin polarized current from the organic-based room temperature ferrimagnetic semiconductor V[TCNE]x (x~2, TCNE: tetracyanoethylene; TC ~ 400 K, EG ~ 0.5 eV, s ~ 10-2 S/cm) and its subsequent injection into a GaAs/AlGaAs light-emitting diode (LED). The spin current tracks the magnetization of V[TCNE]x~2, is weakly temperature dependent, and exhibits heavy hole / light hole asymmetry. This result has implications for room temperature spintronics and the use of inorganic materials to probe spin physics in organic and molecular systems.

These structures are perspective for fabrication of photosensitive heterostructures and can be used for development of effective photoconverters of solar energy. Here, we propose first-principles density-functional theory based route to study the effect of reduced dimensionality, impurity doping, and heterostructure engineering on energy stability, band-gap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite…
Porous polymeric covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been under intense synthetic investigation with over 100 unique structural motifs known. In order to realize the true potential of these materials, converting the powders into thin films with strict control of thickness and morphology is necessary and accomplished through techniques including interfacial synthesis, chemical exfoliation and mechanical delamination. Recent progress in the construction and tailored properties of thin film COFs are highlighted in this review, addressing mechanical properties as well as application-focused pr…
Organic semiconductors based on small conjugated molecules generally behave as insulators when undoped, but the hetero-interfaces of two such materials can show electrical conductivity as large as in a metal. Although charge transfer is commonly invoked to explain the phenomenon, the details of the process and the nature of the interfacial charge carriers remain largely unexplored. Here we use Schottky-gated heterostructures to probe the conducting layer at the interface between rubrene and PDIF-CN2 single crystals. Gate-modulated conductivity measurements demonstrate that interfacial transpor…
A conceptually appealing and computationally economical course-grained molecular-orbital (MO) theory for extended quasi-linear molecular heterostructures is presented. The formalism, which is based on a straightforward adaptation, by including explicitly the vacuum, of the envelope-function approximation widely employed in solid-state physics, leads to a mapping of the three-dimensional single-particle eigenvalue equations into simple one-dimensional hole and electron Schrödinger-like equations with piecewise-constant effective potentials and masses. The eigenfunctions of these equations are e…
Two dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures from transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductors show a new class of spatially separate excitons with extraordinary properties. The interlayer excitons (XI) have been studied extensively, yet the mechanisms that modulate XI are still not well understood. Here, we introduce several organic-layer-embedded hybrid heterostructures, MoS2/organic/WSe2, to study the binding energy of XI. We discover that the dielectric screening of the quasi-particle is reduced with organic molecules due to decreased dielectric constant and greater separat…
The effect of a magnetic field on the electroluminescence of organic light emitting devices originates from the hyperfine interaction between the electron/hole polarons and the hydrogen nuclei of the host molecules. In this paper, we present an analytical theory of magneto-electroluminescence for organic semiconductors. To be specific, we focus on bilayer heterostructure devices. In the case we are considering, light generation at the interface of the donor and acceptor layers results from the formation and recombination of exciplexes. The spin physics is described by a stochastic Liouville eq…

Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) combine different layered materials with properties of interest,1 such as two-dimensional (2D) semimetals, semiconductors, magnets or superconductors. These heterostructures provide the possibility of engineering new materials with emergent functionalities that are not accessible in another way. Beyond inorganic 2D materials, layered molecular materials remain still rather unexplored, with only few examples regarding their isolation as atomically thin-layers. By a proper chemical design, the physical properties of these systems can be tuned, as illustrate…
We theoretically demonstrate the formation of multiple bi-stability regions in the temperature pattern on the interface between a cuprous oxide quantum well and DCM2:CA:PS organic compound. The Frenkel molecular exciton of the DCM2 is brought into resonance with the $1S$ quadrupole Wannier-Mott exciton in the cuprous oxide by "solvatochromism" with CA. The resulting hybrid is thermalized with surrounding helium bath. This leads to strongly non-linear temperature dependence of the laser field detuning from the quadrupole exciton energy band which is associated with the temperature induced red s…
In this paper, two dimensional modulation of the potential in sexithiophene (T6) / N,N-bis(n-octyl)-dicyanoperylenediimide (PDI-8CN2) heterojunction field effect transistors due to the specific microstructure at the interface is used to explain the negative transconductance effect (NTC) experienced in sexithiophene (T6) / N,N-bis(n-octyl)-dicyanoperylenediimide (PDI-8CN2) heterojunction field effect transistors. The NTC effect has been experienced in tunnel devices, such as the tunnel diode, the resonant tunneling field effect transistors (RT-FETs), resonant tunneling double barrier devices. I…
The dependence of thermally induced spontaneous magnetization reversal on time-dependent cooling protocols was studied. Slower cooling and longer waiting close to the Nèel temperature of the antiferromagnet ($T_N$) enhances the magnetization reversal. Cycling the temperature around $T_N$ leads to a thermal training effect under which the reversal magnitude increases with each cycle. These results suggest that spontaneous magnetization reversal is energetically favored, contrary to our present understanding of positive exchange bias.
We observe a thermally induced spontaneous magnetization reversal of epitaxial ferromagnet/antiferromagnet heterostructures under a constant applied magnetic field. Unlike any other magnetic system, the magnetization spontaneously reverses, aligning anti-parallel to an applied field with decreasing temperature. We show that this unusual phenomenon is caused by the interfacial antiferromagnetic coupling overcoming the Zeeman energy of the ferromagnet. A significant temperature hysteresis exists, whose height and width can be tuned by the field applied during thermal cycling. The hysteresis orig…

Here, we explore the effect of reduced dimensionality and heterostructure engineering on the intrinsic material properties, such as energy stability, bandgap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites using first-pr…
The discovery of graphene has spurred vigorous investigation of 2D materials, revealing a wide range of extraordinary properties and functionalities. 2D heterostructural materials have recently been fabricated by assembling isolated planes layer-by-layer in a desired sequence. Unusual properties and novel physical phenomena have been unveiled in such layered heterostructures. For example, Hofstadter's butterfly, an intriguing pattern of the energy states of Bloch electrons, was predicted several decades ago to be observable only under unfeasibly strong magnetic fields in conventional materials…
The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials into vertical heterostructures has emerged as a promising path to designer quantum materials with exotic properties. Here, we extend this concept from inorganic 2D materials to 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that offer additional flexibility in realizing designer heterostructures. We successfully fabricate a monolayer 2D Cu-dicyanoanthracene MOF on a 2D van der Waals NbSe$_2$ superconducting substrate. The structural and electronic properties of two different phases of the 2D MOF are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling micro…
In the present work we discuss resonant hybridization of the $1S$ quadrupole Wannier-Mott exciton (WE) in a $Cu_2O$ quantum well with the Frenkel (FE) dipole exciton in an adjacent layer of organic DCM2:CA:PA. The coupling between excitons is due to interaction between the gradient of electric field induced by DCM2 Frenkel exciton and the quadrupole moment of the $1S$ transition in the cuprous oxide. The specific choice of the organic allows us to use the mechanism of 'solid state solvation' to dynamically tune the WE and FE into resonance during time $\approx 3.3 \: ns$ (comparable with the b…
We present stacked organic lasing heterostructures made by different species of light-emitting electrospun fibers, each able to provide optical gain in a specific spectral region. A hierarchical architecture is obtained by conformable layers of fibers with disordered two-dimensional organization and three-dimensional compositional heterogeneity. Lasing polymer fibers are superimposed in layers, showing asymmetric optical behavior from the two sides of the organic heterostructure, and tailored and bichromatic stimulated emission depending on the excitation direction. A marginal role of energy a…
In this paper, we discuss the surface doping in sexithiophene (T6) organic field-effect transistors by PDI-8CN2. We show that an accumulation heterojunction is formed at the interface between the organic semiconductors and that the consequent band bending in T6 caused by PDI-8CN2 deposition can be addressed as the cause of the surface doping in T6 transistors. Several evidences of this phenomenon have been furnished both by electrical transport and photoemission measurements, namely the increase in the conductivity, the shift of the threshold voltage and the shift of the T6 HOMO peak towards h…
Interest in layered two dimensional materials, particularly stacked heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides, has led to the need for a better understanding of the structural and electronic changes induced by stacking. Here, we investigate the effects of idealized heterostructuring, with periodic commensurate stacking, on the structural, electronic, and vibrational properties, when compared to the counterpart bulk transition metal dichalcogenide. We find that in heterostructures with dissimilar chalcogen species there is a strong compression of the inter-layer spacing, compared to …

We theoretically study spin and charge currents through finite-size two-dimensional $s$-wave superconductor/uniform ferromagnet/s-wave superconductor (SFS) junctions with intrinsic spin-orbit interactions (ISOIs) using a quasiclassical approach. Considering experimentally realistic parameters, we demonstrate that the combination of spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry and lack of inversion symmetry can result in spontaneously accumulated spin currents at the edges of finite-size two-dimensional magnetic SF hybrids. Due to the spontaneous edge spin accumulation, the corners of the F wire…
p-Conjugated materials, including small molecules and polymers, are attracting substantial attention as novel gain media in semiconductor lasers; they offer many potential advantages not achievable with conventional inorganic semiconductors: simple processing, low cost, easy tuneability of the spectrum, and large-area integration on flexible substrates. Optically pumped lasing action in various small molecular and polymeric p-conjugated materials has been demonstrated using several resonator configurations. However, electrically pumped organic semiconductor lasers, i.e., organic injection or d…
Interparticle heterostructures by spontaneous formation of Dirac nodal arc semimetal PtSn4 domains in nanoparticles produced by Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition
We studied the persistent photoconductivity (PPC) effect in AlGaN/AlN/GaN heterostructures with two different Al-compositions (x=0.15 and x=0.25). The two-dimensional electron gas formed at the AlN/GaN heterointerface was characterized by Shubnikov-de Haas and Hall measurements. Using optical illumination, we were able to increase the carrier density of the Al0.15Ga0.85N/AlN/GaN sample from 1.6x10^{12} cm^{-2} to 5.9x1012 cm^{-2}, while the electron mobility was enhanced from 9540 cm2/Vs to 21400 cm2/Vs at T = 1.6 K. The persistent photocurrent in both samples exhibited a strong dependence on …
An accurate estimate of the ferroelectric polarization in ferroelectric-dielectric stacks is important from a materials science perspective, and it is also crucial for the development of ferroelectric based electron devices. This paper revisits the theory and application of the PUND technique in Metal-Ferroelectric-Dielectric-Metal (MFDM) structures by using analytical derivations and numerical simulations. In an MFDM structure the results of the PUND technique may largely differ from the polarization actually switched in the stack, which in turn is different from the remnant polarization of t…

We investigated transport properties of organic heterointerfaces formed by single-crystals of two organic donor-acceptor molecules, tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene (TMTSF) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ). Whereas the individual crystals have un-measurably high resistance, the interface exhibits a resistivity of few tens of MegaOhm with a temperature dependence characteristic of a small gap semiconductor. We analyze the transport properties based on a simple band-diagram that naturally accounts for our observations in terms of charge transfer between two crystals. Together with the …
We present a study of undoped AlGaN/GaN separate confinement heterostructures designed to operate as electron beam pumped ultraviolet lasers. We discuss the effect of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization on carrier diffusion, comparing the results of cathodoluminescence with electronic simulations of the band structure and Monte Carlo calculations of the electron trajectories. Carrier collection is significantly improved using an asymmetric graded-index separate confinement heterostructure (GRINSCH). The graded layers avoid potential barriers induced by polarization differences in the he…
Controlling interfacial interactions in magnetic/topological insulator heterostructures is a major challenge for the emergence of novel spin-dependent electronic phenomena. As for any rational design of heterostructures that rely on proximity effects, one should ideally retain the overall properties of each component while tuning interactions at the interface. However, in most inorganic interfaces interactions are too strong, consequently perturbing, and even quenching, both the magnetic moment and the topological surface states at each side of the interface. Here we show that these properties…
The role of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization in III-V nitride heterostructure devices is discussed. Problems as well as opportunities in incorporating polarization in abrupt and graded heterojunctions composed of binary, ternary, and quaternary nitrides are outlined.
Engineering a low singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEST) is necessary for efficient reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) in delayed fluorescence (DF) organic semiconductors, but results in a small radiative rate that limits performance in LEDs. Here, we study a model DF material, BF2, that exhibits a strong optical absorption (absorption coefficient =3.8x10^5 cm^-1) and a relatively large ΔEST of 0.2 eV. In isolated BF2 molecules, intramolecular rISC is slow (260 μs), but in aggregated films, BF2 generates intermolecular CT (inter-CT) states on picosecond timescales. In contrast to the microsecond i…
One of the basic assumptions in organic field-effect transistors, the most fundamental device unit in organic electronics, is that charge transport occurs two-dimensionally in the first few molecular layers near the dielectric interface. Although the mobility of bulk organic semiconductors has increased dramatically, direct probing of intrinsic charge transport in the two-dimensional limit has not been possible due to excessive disorders and traps in ultrathin organic thin films. Here, highly ordered mono- to tetra-layer pentacene crystals are realized by van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy on hexagon…
We report on the quantum confinement of zero-dimensional polaritons in perovskite-based microcavity at room temperature. Photoluminescence of discrete polaritonic states are observed for polariton localized in symmetric sphere-like defects which are spontaneously nucleated on the top dielectric Bragg mirror. The linewidth of these confined states are found much sharper (almost one order of magnitude) than that of photonic modes in the perovskite planar microcavity. Our results show the possibility to study organic-inorganic cavity polariton in confined microstructure and suggest a fabrication …

Interface effect in complex oxide thin film heterostructures lies at the vanguard of current research to design technologically relevant functionality and explore emergent physical phenomena. While most of the previous works focus on the perovskite/perovskite heterostructures, the study on perovskite/brownmillerite interfaces remain at its infancy. Here, we investigate spontaneously stabilized perovskite-ferromagnet (SrCoO3-δ)/brownmillertite-antiferromagnet (SrCoO2.5) bi-layer with TN > TC and discover an unconventional interfacial magnetic exchange bias effect. From magnetometry investigatio…
A self-consistent model of bipolar charge-carrier injection and transport processes in a semiconductor/insulator/conductor system is developed which incorporates space-charge effects in the description of the injection process. The amount of charge-carriers injected is strongly determined by the energy barrier emerging at the contact, but at the same time the electrostatic potential generated by the injected charge-carriers modifies the height of this injection barrier itself. In our model, self-consistency is obtained by assuming continuity of the electric displacement and of the electrochemi…
van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions formed by two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent electrical/optical properties and device applications. However, current 2D heterojunctions are largely limited to atomic crystals, and hybrid organic/inorganic structures are rarely explored. Here, we fabricate hybrid 2D heterostructures with p-type dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene (C8-BTBT) and n-type MoS2. We find that few-layer C8-BTBT molecular crystals can be grown on monolayer MoS2 by vdW epitaxy, with pristine interface and controllable thickness down t…
Although the magnetoelectric effects - the mutual control of electric polarization by magnetic fields and magnetism by electric fields, have been intensively studied in a large number of inorganic compounds and heterostructures, they have been rarely observed in organic materials. Here we demonstrate magnetoelectric coupling in a metal-organic framework [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3 which exhibits an order-disorder type of ferroelectricity below 185 K. The magnetic susceptibility starts to deviate from the Curie-Weiss law at the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition temperature, suggesting an enhanceme…

High performance and multifunctional devices were achieved by employing diverse designs of architectures, such as hybrid systems with nanostructured materials, bulk semiconductors and organics, forming 2D heterostructures. In this review, we mainly discuss the recent progresses of 2D materials in high responsive photodetectors, light-emitting devices and s…
Excitonic insulators are long-sought-after quantum materials predicted to spontaneously open a gap by the Bose condensation of bound electron-hole pairs, namely, excitons, in their ground state. Since the theoretical conjecture, extensive efforts have been devoted to pursuing excitonic insulator platforms for exploring macroscopic quantum phenomena in real materials. Reliable evidences of excitonic character have been obtained in layered chalcogenides as promising candidates. However, owing to the interference of intrinsic lattice instabilities, it is still debatable whether those features, su…
Magnetotransport and magnetism of epitaxial SmTiO3/EuTiO3 heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy are investigated. It is shown that the polar discontinuity at the interface introduces ~ 3.9x10^14 cm^-2 carriers into the EuTiO3. The itinerant carriers exhibit two distinct contributions to the spontaneous Hall effect. The anomalous Hall effect appears despite a very small magnetization, indicating a non-collinear spin structure and the second contribution resembles a topological Hall effect. Qualitative differences exist in the temperature dependence of both Hall effects when compared …
We show by means of ab-initio calculations that the organic molecular crystal TTF-CA is multiferroic: it has an instability to develop spontaneously both ferroelectric and magnetic ordering. Ferroelectricity is driven by a Peierls transition of the TTF-CA in its ionic state. Subsequent antiferromagnetic ordering strongly enhances the opposing electronic contribution to the polarization: it is so large that it switches the direction of the total ferroelectric moment. Within an extended Hubbard model we capture the essence of the electronic interactions in TTF-CA, confirm the presence of a multi…
