The sum-essential graph $ \mathcal{S}_R(M) $ of a left $R$-module $M$ is a graph whose vertices are all nontrivial submodules of $M$ and two distinct submodules are adjacent iff their sum is an essential submodule of $M$. Properties of the graph $\mathcal{S}_R(M)$ and its subgraph $\mathcal{P}_R(M)$ induced by vertices which are not essential as submodules of $M$ are investigated. The interplay between module properties of $M$ and properties of those graphs is studied.
In this paper we discuss under which conditions cyclic essential extensions of simple modules over a differential operator ring R[z;d] are Artinian. In particular, we study the case when R is either d-simple or d-primitive. Furthermore, we obtain important results when R is an affine algebra of Kull dimension 2. As an application we characterize the differential operator rings C[x,y][z;d] for which cyclic essential extensions of simple modules are Artinian.
We study direct sum decompositions of modules satisfying the descending chain condition on direct summands. We call modules satisfying this condition Krull-Schmidt artinian. We prove that all direct sum decompositions of Krull-Schmidt artinian modules refine into finite indecomposable direct sum decompositions and we prove that this condition is strictly stronger than the condition of a module admitting finite indecomposable direct sum decompositions. We also study the problem of existence and uniqueness of direct sum decompositions of Krull-Schmidt artinian modules in terms of given classes o…
In this paper, we study the class of modules have the property that every pure submodule is essential in a direct summand. These modules are termed as pure extending modules which is a proper generalisation of extending modules. Examples and counterexamples are given. We study some properties of pure extending modules and characterize regular ring, semisimple ring, local ring and PDS ring in terms of pure extending modules.

A ring $R$ with center $C$ is said to be\textit{centrally essential} if the module $R_C$ is an essential extension of the module $C_C$. We describe centrally essential exterior algebras of finitely generated free modules over not necessary commutative rings and study properties of semi-Artinian centrally essential rings. For bounded lattices, we introduce certain Galois connections, called (cyclically) essential, retractable and UC Galois connections, which behave well with respect to concepts of module-theoretic nature involving essentiality. We show that essential retractable Galois connections preserve uniform dimension, whereas essential retractable UC Galois connections induce a bijective correspondence between sets of closed elements. Our results are applied to suitable Galois connections between submodule lattices. Cyclically essential Galois connections unify semi-projective and semi-injective modules,…
A submodule $W$ of $V$ is summand absorbing, if $x + y \in W$ implies $x \in W, \; y \in W $ for any $x, y \in V$. Such submodules often appear in modules over (additively) idempotent semirings, particularly in tropical algebra. This paper studies amalgamation and extensions of these submodules, and more generally of upper bound modules.
It is well known that a direct sum of CLS-modules is not, in general, a CLS-module. It is proved that if $M=M_1\oplus M_2$, where $M_1$ and $M_2$ are CLS-modules such that $M_1$ and $M_2$ are relatively ojective (or $M_1$ is $M_2$-ejective), then $M$ is a CLS-module and some known results are generalized. Tercan [8] proved that if a module $M=M_{1}\oplus M_{2}$ where $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are CS-modules such that $M_{1}$ is $M_{2}$-injective, then $M$ is a CS-module if and only if $Z_{2}(M)$ is a CS-module. Here we will show that Tercan's claim is not true.

A direct sum decomposition theory is developed for direct summands (and complements) of modules over a semiring $R$, having the property that $v+w = 0$ implies $v = 0$ and $w = 0$. Although this never occurs when $R$ is a ring, it always does holds for free modules over the max-plus semiring and related semirings. In such situations, the direct complement is unique, and the decomposition is unique up to refinement. Thus, every finitely generated projective module is a finite direct sum of summands of $R$ (assuming the mild assumption that $1$ is a finite sum of orthogonal primitive idempotents…
An $R$-module $V$ over a semiring $R$ lacks zero sums (LZS) if $ x +y = 0 \; \Rightarrow \; x = y = 0$. More generally, asubmodule $W$ of $V$ is "summand absorbing", if $ \forall \, x, y \in V: \ x + y \in W \; \Rightarrow \; x \in W, \; y \in W. $ These relate to tropical algebra and modules over idempotent semirings, as well as modules over semirings of sums of squares. In previous work, we have explored the lattice of summand absorbing submodules of a given LZS module, especially those that are finitely generated, in terms of the lattice-theoretic Krull dimension. In this note we describe t…
It is proved that the ring $R$ with center $Z(R)$, such that the module $R_{Z(R)}$ is an essential extension of the module $Z(R)_{Z(R)}$, is not necessarily right quasi-invariant, i.e., maximal right ideals of the ring $R$ are not necessarily ideals. We use central essentiality to obtain conditions which are sufficient to the property that all maximal right ideals are ideals
A ring $R$ with center $C$ is said to be \textit{centrally essential} if the module $R_C$ is an essential extension of the module $C_C$. In the paper, we study groups whose group algebras over fields are centrally essential rings. We focus on the centrally essential modular group algebras of finite groups over fields of nonzero characteristic. R is called a right WV -ring if each simple right R-module is injective relative to proper cyclics. If R is a right WV -ring, then R is right uniform or a right V -ring. It is shown that for a right WV-ring R, R is right noetherian if and only if each right cyclic module is a direct sum of a projective module and a CS or noetherian module. For a finitely generated module M with projective socle over a V -ring R such that every subfactor of M is a direct sum of a projective module and a CS or noetherian module, we show M = X \oplus T, where X is semisimple and T is noetherian with zero socle. I…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $α$ an automorphism of $R$. This paper addresses the question: when does the skew polynomial ring $S = R[θ; α]$ satisfy the property $(\diamond)$, that for every simple $S$-module $V$ the injective hull $E_S(V)$ of $V$ has all its finitely generated submodules Artinian. The question is largely reduced to the special case where $S$ is primitive, for which necessary and sufficient conditions are found, which however do not between them cover all possibilities. Nevertheless a complete characterisation is found when $R$ is an affine algebra over a field…
Let R be a ring (not necessarily commutative). A left R-module is said to be cotorsion if Ext 1 R (G, M) = 0 for any flat R-module G. It is well known that each pure-injective left R-module is cotorsion, but the converse does not hold: for instance, if R is left perfect but not left pure-semisimple then each left R-module is cotorsion but there exist non-pure-injective left modules. The aim of this paper is to describe the class C of commutative rings R for which each cotorsion R-module is pure-injective. It is easy to see that C contains the class of von Neumann regular rings and the one of p…
Let $R$ be a ring and let $\mathcal C$ be a small class of right $R$-modules which is closed under finite direct sums, direct summands, and isomorphisms. Let $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ denote a set of representatives of isomorphism classes in $\mathcal C$ and, for any module $M$ in $\mathcal C$, let $[M]$ denote the unique element in $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ isomorphic to $M$. Then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a reduced commutative semigroup with operation defined by $[M] + [N] = [M \oplus N]$, and this semigroup carries all information about direct-sum decompositions of modules in $\mathcal C…
In this paper we study (non-commutative) rings $R$ over which every finitely generated left module is a direct sum of cyclic modules (called left FGC-rings). The commutative case was a well-known problem studied and solved in 1970s by various authors. It is shown that a Noetherian local left FGC-ring is either an Artinian principal left ideal ring, or an Artinian principal right ideal ring, or a prime ring over which every two-sided ideal is principal as a left and a right ideal. In particular, it is shown that a Noetherian local duo-ring $R$ is a left FGC-ring if and only if $R$ is a right FG…
We study finiteness conditions on essential extensions of simple modules over the quantum plane, the quantized Weyl algebra and Noetherian down-up algebras. The results achieved improve the ones obtained in [arXiv:0906.2930] for down-up algebras.
One proves that each almost local-global semihereditary ring has the stacked basis property and is almost Bezout. If M is a finitely presented module, its torsion part tM is a direct sum of cyclic modules where the family of annhilators is an ascending chain of invertible ideals. These ideals are invariants of M. Moreover, M/tM is a direct sum of 2-generated ideals whose product is an invariant of M. The idempotents and the positive integers defined by the rank of M/tM are invariants of M too.
Let $R$ be a ring. $R$ is called a right countably $Σ$-C2 ring if every countable direct sum copies of $R_{R}$ is a C2 module. The following are equivalent for a ring $R$: (1) $R$ is a right countably $Σ$-C2 ring. (2) The column finite matrix ring $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{F}\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{N}}(R)$ is a right C2 (or C3) ring. (3) Every countable direct sum copies of $R_{R}$ is a C3 module. (4) Every projective right $R$-module is a C2 (or C3) module. (5) $R$ is a right perfect ring and every finite direct sum copies of $R_{R}$ is a C2 (or C3) module. This shows that right countably $Σ$-C2 rings a…
It is shown that, if $R$ is either an Artin algebra or a commutative noetherian domain of Krull dimension $1$, then infinite direct products of $R$-modules resist direct sum decomposition as follows: If $(M_n)_{n \in \Bbb N}$ is a family of non-isomorphic, finitely generated, indecomposable $R$-modules, then $\prod_{n\in \Bbb N} M_n$ is not a direct sum of finitely generated modules. The bearing of this direct product condition on the pure semisimplicity problem is discussed.
