We consider the problem of defining spacelike-supported boundary-to-bulk propagators in AdS$_{d+1}$ down to the unitary bound $Δ=(d-2)/2$. That is to say, we construct the `smearing functions' $K$ of HKLL but with different boundary conditions where both dimensions $Δ_+$ and $Δ_-$ are taken into account. More precisely, we impose Robin boundary conditions, which interpolate between Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions and we give explicit expressions for the distributional kernel $K$ with spacelike support. This flow between boundary conditions is known to be captured in the boundary by adding a double-trace deformation to the CFT. Indeed, we explicitly show that using $K$ there is a consistent and explicit map from a Wightman function of the boundary QFT to a Wightman function of the bulk theory. In order to accomplish this we have to study first the microlocal properties of the boundary two-point function of the perturbed CFT and prove its wavefront set satisfies the microlocal spectrum condition. This permits to assert that $K$ and the boundary two-point function can be multiplied as distributions.
The entanglement wedge cross section in holographic picture provides a geometrical description of the entanglement for mixed states. In this paper we study the inequalities for the entanglement wedge cross section in AdS/BCFT duality. In the presence of the boundary in conformal field theory (CFT), the dual entanglement wedge cross section exhibits abundant phase structures since the extremal surface may end on the brane. We present a universal treatment which is applicable for all the possible phases such that the inequalities for the entanglement wedge cross section can be proved in an algeb…
We examine general features of causal wedges in asymptotically AdS spacetimes and show that in a wide variety of cases they have non-trivial topology. We also prove some general results regarding minimal area surfaces on the causal wedge boundary and thereby derive constraints on the causal holographic information. We go on to demonstrate that certain properties of the causal wedge impact significantly on features of extremal surfaces which are relevant for computation of holographic entanglement entropy.
In order to better understand how AdS holography works for sub-regions, we formulate a holographic version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem for the simple case of an AdS Klein-Gordon field. This theorem asserts that the set of states constructed by acting on a suitable vacuum state with boundary observables contained within any subset of the boundary is dense in the Hilbert space of the bulk theory. To prove this theorem we need two ingredients which are themselves of interest. First, we prove a purely bulk version of Reeh-Schlieder theorem for an AdS Klein-Gordon field. This theorem relies on th…
Recently, a codimension two holography called wedge holography is proposed as a generalization of AdS/CFT. It is conjectured that a gravitational theory in $d+1$ dimensional wedge spacetime is dual to a $d-1$ dimensional CFT on the corner of the wedge. In this paper, we give an exact construction of the gravitational solutions for wedge holography from the ones in AdS/CFT. By applying this construction, we prove the equivalence between wedge holography and AdS/CFT for vacuum Einstein gravity, by showing that the classical gravitational action and thus the CFT partition function in large N limi…
Holographic relationships between entanglement entropy on the boundary of a spacetime and the area of minimal surfaces in the bulk provide an important entry in the bulk/boundary dictionary. While constructing the necessary causal and entanglement wedges is well understood in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, less is known about the equivalent constructions in spacetimes with different asymptotics. In particular, recent attempts to construct entanglement and causal wedges for asymptotically Lifshitz solutions in relativistic gravitational theories have proven problematic. We note a simple observa…
We study the problem of revealing the entanglement wedge using simple operations. We ask what operation a semiclassical observer can do to bring the entanglement wedge into causal contact with the boundary, via backreaction. In a generic perturbative class of states, we propose a unitary operation in the causal wedge whose backreaction brings all of the previously causally inaccessible `peninsula' into causal contact with the boundary. This class of cases includes entanglement wedges associated to boundary sub-regions that are unions of disjoint spherical caps, and the protocol works to first …
Different AdS-Rindler wedges can be mapped to each other using bulk isometries. In this paper we address how the boundary representations corresponding to the AdS-Rindler wedges transform under such isometries. We show that when a bulk wedge is mapped to another using a bulk isometry, their boundary representations are mapped by the conformal transformation corresponding to the isometry. We comment on the import of this result on the relation between AdS/CFT and quantum error correction.
We present a new method of deriving shapes of entanglement wedges directly from CFT calculations. We point out that a reduced density matrix in holographic CFTs possesses a sharp wedge structure such that inside the wedge we can distinguish two local excitations, while outside we cannot. We can determine this wedge, which we call a CFT wedge, by computing a distinguishability measure. We find that CFT wedges defined by the fidelity or Bures distance as a distinguishability measure, coincide perfectly with shadows of entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT. We confirm this agreement between CFT wedges a…
We explore subleading contributions to the two basic central charges c and a of four-dimensional conformal field theories in the AdS/CFT scheme. In particular we probe subleading corrections to the difference c-a from the string-theory side. In the N=4 CFT, c-a vanish identically consistently with the string-theory expectations. However, for N=1 and N=2 CFTs, the U_R(1) anomaly, which is proportional to c-a, is subleading in the large N limit for theories in the AdS/CFT context and one expects string one-loop R^2 and B \wedge R \wedge R terms in the low energy effective action. We identify the…
In higher derivative theories, gravity can travel slower or faster than light. With this feature in mind, we revisit the construction of the causal and entanglement wedges in this type of theories, and argue that they must be constructed using the fastest mode instead of null rays. We show that the property of causal wedge inclusion, i.e., the fact that the causal wedge must be contained in the entanglement wedge, leads to more stringent constraints on the couplings than those imposed by hyperbolicity and boundary causality. Our results imply that the full power of subregion-subregion duality …
Causal shadows are bulk space-time regions between the entanglement wedges and the causal wedges, their existence encodes deep aspects of the entanglement wedge reconstruction in the context of subregion duality in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we study the perturbation theory of the causal shadows and their relation to the properties of the associated modular flows. We first revisit the cases of degenerate causal shadows based on known examples, and discuss the origin for their degeneracy via the local nature of the modular flow. We then focus on the perturbative case in which the CFT subregion con…
We propose a codimension two holography between a gravitational theory on a $d+1$ dimensional wedge spacetime and a $d-1$ dimensional CFT which lives on the corner of the wedge. Formulating this as a generalization of AdS/CFT, we explain how to compute the free energy, entanglement entropy and correlation functions of the dual CFTs from gravity. In this wedge holography, the holographic entanglement entropy is computed by a double minimization procedure. Especially, for a four dimensional gravity ($d=3$), we obtain a two dimensional CFT and the holographic entanglement entropy perfectly reprod…
We consider the reconstruction of a Lifshitz spacetime from three perspectives: differential entropy (or "hole-ography"), causal wedges and entanglement wedges. We find that not all time-varying bulk curves in vacuum Lifshitz can be reconstructed via the differential entropy approach, adding a caveat to the general analysis of \cite{Headrick:2014eia}. We show that the causal wedge for Lifshitz spacetimes degenerates, while the entanglement wedge requires the additional consideration of a set of boundary-emanating light-sheets. The need to include bulk surfaces with no clear field theory interp…
In this note, we explain how asymptotically globally AdS spacetimes can be given an alternate dual description as entangled states of a pair of hyperbolic space CFTs, which are associated with complementary Rindler wedges of the AdS geometry. The reduced density matrix encoding the state of the degrees of freedom in one of these CFTs describes the physics in a single wedge, which we can think of as the region of spacetime accessible to an accelerated observer in AdS. For pure AdS, this density matrix is thermal, and we argue that the microstates in this thermal ensemble correspond to spacetime…
Quantum error correcting codes with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces have yielded new insights on bulk reconstruction in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we give an explicit construction of a quantum error correcting code where the code and physical Hilbert spaces are infinite-dimensional. We define a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$ acting on the code Hilbert space and show how it is mapped to a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$ acting on the physical Hilbert space. This toy model demonstrates the equivalence of entanglement wedge reconstruction and the exact equality of bulk and boundary relative…
We consider the holographic prescription problem in a (Lorentzian) AdS background, deriving from first principles the explicit formulas that relate the field at infinity with the field in the bulk. In contrast with the previous studies of the "real-time" holography problem, our derivation uses purely classical arguments that involve causality, as in the usual treatment of the holographic prescription problem in Wick-rotated spaces of Euclidean signature. We show that there is a unique propagator that preserves causality and see that this provides a simple picture of the relationship between th…
In the AdS/CFT correspondence, bulk causal structure has consequences for boundary entanglement. In quantum information science, causal structures can be replaced by distributed entanglement for the purposes of information processing. In this work, we deepen the understanding of both of these statements, and their relationship, with a number of new results. Centrally, we present and prove a new theorem, the $n$-to-$n$ connected wedge theorem, which considers $n$ input and $n$ output locations at the boundary of an asymptotically AdS$_{2+1}$ spacetime described by AdS/CFT. When a sufficiently s…
We propose a measure of holographic information based on a causal wedge construction. The motivation behind this comes from an attempt to understand how boundary field theories can holographically reconstruct spacetime. We argue that given the knowledge of the reduced density matrix in a spatial region of the boundary, one should be able to reconstruct at least the corresponding bulk causal wedge. In attempt to quantify the `amount of information' contained in a given spatial region in field theory, we consider a particular bulk surface (specifically a co-dimension two surface in the bulk spac…
We substantiate a covariant proposal for the holographic reflected entropy in $CFT$s dual to non-static $AdS$ geometries from the bulk extremal entanglement wedge cross section in the literature with explicit computations in the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ scenario. In this context we obtain the reflected entropy for zero and finite temperature time dependent bipartite mixed states in $CFT_{1+1}$s with a conserved charge dual to bulk rotating extremal and non-extremal BTZ black holes through a replica technique. Our results match exactly with the corresponding extremal entanglement wedge cross section for t…
Subregion duality in AdS/CFT implies certain constraints on the geometry: entanglement wedges must contain causal wedges, and nested boundary regions must have nested entanglement wedges. We elucidate the logical connections between these statements and the Quantum Focussing Conjecture, Quantum Null Energy Condition, Boundary Causality Condition, and Averaged Null Energy Condition. Our analysis does not rely on the classical limit of bulk physics, but instead works to all orders in $G\hbar \sim 1/N$. This constitutes a nontrivial check on the consistency of subregion duality, entanglement wedg…
We analyze the Cauchy problem for the Klein-Gordon equation on the type IIB supergravity backgrounds $AdS^5 \times Y^{p,q}$, where $Y^{p,q}$ is any of the Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds recently discovered by Gaunlett, Martelli, Sparks and Waldram (Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 8 (2004) 711--734). Although these spaces are not globally hyperbolic, we prove that there exists a unique admissible propagator and derive an integral representation thereof using spectral-theoretic techniques.
It is shown that a suitably formulated algebraic lightfront holography, in which the lightfront is viewed as the linear extension of the upper causal horizon of a wedge region, is capable of overcoming the shortcomings of the old lightfront quantization. The absence of transverse vacuum fluctuations which this formalism reveals, is responsible for an area (edge of the wedge) -rearrangement of degrees of freedom which in turn leads to the notion of area density of entropy for a ``split localization''. This area proportionality of horizon associated entropy has to be compared to the volume depen…
We prove a theorem showing that the existence of "private" curves in the bulk of AdS implies two regions of the dual CFT share strong correlations. A private curve is a causal curve which avoids the entanglement wedge of a specified boundary region $\mathcal{U}$. The implied correlation is measured by the conditional mutual information $I(\mathcal{V}_1:\mathcal{V}_2\,|\,\mathcal{U})$, which is $O(1/G_N)$ when a private causal curve exists. The regions $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_2$ are specified by the endpoints of the causal curve and the placement of the region $\mathcal{U}$. This gives…
We analyse the causality condition in noncommutative field theory and show that the nonlocality of noncommutative interaction leads to a modification of the light cone to the light wedge. This effect is generic for noncommutative geometry. We also check that the usual form of energy condition is violated and propose that a new form is needed in noncommutative spacetime. On reduction from light cone to light wedge, it looks like the noncommutative dimensions are effectively washed out and suggests a reformulation of noncommutative field theory in terms of lower dimensional degree of freedom. Th…
In 2006, Ryu and Takayanagi (RT) pointed out that (with a suitable cutoff) the entanglement entropy between two complementary regions of an equal-time surface of a d+1-dimensional conformal field theory on the conformal boundary of AdS_{d+2} is, when the AdS radius is appropriately related to the parameters of the CFT, equal to 1/4G times the area of the d-dimensional minimal surface in the AdS bulk which has the junction of those complementary regions as its boundary, where G is the bulk Newton constant. We point out here that the RT-equality implies that, in the quantum theory on the bulk Ad…
In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study bulk reconstruction of the Poincare wedge of AdS$_3$ via hole-ography, i.e., in terms of differential entropy of the dual CFT$_2$. Previous work had considered the reconstruction of closed or open spacelike curves in global AdS, and of infinitely extended spacelike curves in Poincare AdS that are subject to a periodicity condition at infinity. Working first at constant time, we find that a closed curve in Poincare is described in the CFT by a family of intervals that covers the spatial axis at least twice. We also show how to reconstruct o…
We introduce a simple geometrical construction similar to covariant holographic entanglement entropy but with the addition of a new term proportional to boundary region volume. This new procedure has properties strongly resembling classical Shannon entropy of probability distributions rather than von Neumann entropy, so we call the quantity holographic Shannon entropy. The holographic Shannon entropy of a region $A$ is divergent in AdS/CFT, but upon regulation, it appears to be equal to the outer entropy of the entanglement wedge of $A$ with the entanglement wedge of the complement of $A$ held…
In AdS/CFT, the fine grained entropy of a boundary region is dual to the area of an extremal surface X in the bulk. It has been proposed that the area of a certain 'causal surface' C - i.e. the 'causal holographic information' (CHI) - corresponds to some coarse-grained entropy in the boundary theory. We construct two kinds of counterexamples that rule out various possible duals, using (1) vacuum rigidity and (2) thermal quenches. This includes the 'one-point entropy' proposed by Kelly and Wall, and a large class of related procedures. Also, any coarse-graining that fixes the geometry of the bu…

Asymptotic Causal Diamonds (ACDs) are a natural flat space analogue of AdS causal wedges, and it has been argued previously that they may be useful for understanding bulk locality in flat space holography. In this paper, we use ACD-inspired ideas to argue that there exist natural candidates for Quantum Extremal Surfaces (QES) and entanglement wedges in flat space, anchored to the conformal boundary. When there is a holographic screen at finite radius, we can also associate entanglement wedges and entropies to screen sub-regions, with the system naturally coupled to a sink. The screen and the b…
We establish a construction for the entanglement wedge in asymptotically flat bulk geometries for subsystems in dual $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories in the context of flat space holography. In this connection we propose a definition for the bulk entanglement wedge cross section for bipartite states of such dual non relativistic conformal field theories. Utilizing our construction for the entanglement wedge cross section we compute the entanglement negativity for such bipartite states through the generalization of an earlier proposal, in the context of the usual $AdS/CFT$ …
We study the caustics on the boundaries of entanglement wedges in the context of holography in asymptotically AdS$_3$ spacetimes. These entanglement wedges play an important role in our understanding of the emergence of bulk locality. A procedure was proposed by Sanches and Weinberg [arXiv:1703.07780] for identifying boundary operators which are local in the bulk, which also applies to certain regions that lie beyond the reach of HRT surfaces by taking advantage of the lightsheets which bound entanglement wedges. We identify the caustics which terminate these lightsheets in conical deficit and…
We compute fluctuations in the modular energy of the vacuum associated with a Rindler-wedge in AdS spacetime in the context of AdS/CFT. We discuss the possible effect of these energy fluctuations on the spacetime geometry, and on the traversal time of a light beam propagating from the boundary to the bulk and back.
We study the holographic entanglement entropy of spatial regions with corners in the AdS4/BCFT3 correspondence by considering three dimensional boundary conformal field theories whose boundary is a timelike plane. We compute analytically the corner function corresponding to an infinite wedge having one edge on the boundary. A relation between this corner function and the holographic one point function of the stress tensor is observed. An analytic expression for the corner function of an infinite wedge having only its tip on the boundary is also provided. This formula requires to find the globa…
We find the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT corresponding to a moving black hole in AdS. Boosting the black hole to the speed of light, keeping the total energy fixed, yields a gravitational shock wave in AdS. The analogous procedure on the field theory side leads to ``light cone'' states, i.e., states with energy-momentum tensor localized on the light cone. The correspondence between the gravitational shock wave and these light cone states provides a useful tool for testing causality. We show, in several examples, how the CFT reproduces the causal relations in AdS.
Gravitational time delay in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spaces has consequences for holographic duality. We argue that the requirement of bulk causality implies that it is not possible for a collection of boundary observers, performing local measurements, to extract information from precursors. Using similar arguments, we derive an integrated weak energy constraint on spacetimes which can admit a holographic dual.
The problem of how the boundary encodes the bulk in AdS/CFT is still a subject of study today. One of the major issues that needs more elucidation is the problem of subregion duality; what information of the bulk a given boundary subregion encodes. Although the proof given by Dong, Harlow, and Wall states that the entanglement wedge of the bulk should be encoded in boundary subregions, no explicit procedure for reconstructing the entanglement wedge was given so far. In this paper, mode sum approach to obtaining smearing functions for a single bulk scalar is generalised to include bulk reconstr…
Recent developments have exposed close connections between quantum information and holography. In this paper, we explore the geometrical interpretations of the recently introduced $Q$-correlation and $R$-correlation, $E_Q$ and $E_R$. We find that $E_Q$ admits a natural geometric interpretation via the surface-state correspondence: it is a minimal mutual information between a surface region $A$ and a cross-section of $A$'s entanglement wedge with $B$. We note a strict trade-off between this minimal mutual information and the symmetric side-channel assisted distillable entanglement from the envi…
We identify conditions for the entanglement entropy as a function of spatial region to be compatible with causality in an arbitrary relativistic quantum field theory. We then prove that the covariant holographic entanglement entropy prescription (which relates entanglement entropy of a given spatial region on the boundary to the area of a certain extremal surface in the bulk) obeys these conditions, as long as the bulk obeys the null energy condition. While necessary for the validity of the prescription, this consistency requirement is quite nontrivial from the bulk standpoint, and therefore p…
