We derive new self-consistent theoretical UV, optical, and IR diagnostics for the ISM pressure and electron density in the ionized nebulae of star-forming galaxies. Our UV diagnostics utilize the inter-combination, forbidden and resonance lines of silicon, carbon, aluminum, neon, and nitrogen. We also calibrate the optical and IR forbidden lines of oxygen, argon, nitrogen and sulfur. We show that line ratios used as ISM pressure diagnostics depend on the gas-phase metallicity with a residual dependence on the ionization parameter of the gas. In addition, the traditional electron density diagnostic [S II] λ6731/[S II] λ6717 is strongly dependent on the gas-phase metallicity. We show how different emission-line ratios are produced in different ionization zones in our theoretical nebulae. The [S II] and [O II] ratios are produced in different zones, and should not be used interchangeably to measure the electron density of the gas unless the electron temperature is known to be constant. We review the temperature and density distributions observed within H II regions and discuss the implications of these distributions on measuring the electron density of the gas. Many H II regions contain radial variations in density. We suggest that the ISM pressure is a more meaningful quantity to measure in H II regions or galaxies. Specific combinations of line ratios can cover the full range of ISM pressures (4 < log(P/k) < 9). As H II regions become resolved at increasingly high redshift through the next generation telescopes, we anticipate that these diagnostics will be important for understanding the conditions around the young, hot stars from the early universe to the present day.
We have observed a sample of 14 nearby ($z \sim 0.03$) star-forming blue compact galaxies in the rest-frame far-UV ($\sim1150-2200 Å$) using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also generated a grid of stellar population synthesis models using the Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis code, allowing us to compare observations and theoretical predictions for the SiIV_1400 and CIV_1550 UV indices; both are comprised of a blend of stellar wind and interstellar lines and have been proposed as metallicity diagnostics in the UV. Our models and observations both demons…
We combine state-of-the-art models for the production of stellar radiation and its transfer through the interstellar medium (ISM) to investigate ultraviolet-line diagnostics of stars, the ionized and the neutral ISM in star-forming galaxies. We start by assessing the reliability of our stellar population synthesis modelling by fitting absorption-line indices in the ISM-free ultraviolet spectra of 10 Large-Magellanic-Cloud clusters. In doing so, we find that neglecting stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function in these young ($\sim10$-100 Myr), low-mass clusters affects negligibl…
Extreme Scattering Events and pulsar secondary spectra have highlighted fundamental problems in our understanding of the dynamics of interstellar turbulence. We describe some of these problems in detail and present the theory behind the technique of speckle imaging, which offers a prospect of revealing fundamental properties of the turbulence. It also offers the prospect of resolving pulsar magnetospheres on ~10 nanoarcsecond scales.
ALMA is revolutionizing the way we study and understand the astrophysics of galaxies, both as a whole and individually. By exploiting its unique sensitivity and resolution to make spatially and spectrally resolved images of the gas and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM), ALMA can reveal new information about the relationship between stars and gas, during and between galaxies' cycles of star formation and AGN fueling. However, this can only be done for a modest number of targets, and thus works in the context of large samples drawn from other surveys, while providing parallel deep imaging in…
Sub-millimeter emission lines produced by the interstellar medium (ISM) are strong tracers of star formation and are some of the main targets of line intensity mapping (LIM) surveys. In this work we present an empirical multi-line emission model that simultaneously covers the mean, scatter, and correlations of [CII], CO J=1-0 to J=5-4, and [CI] lines in redshift range $1\leq z\leq9$. We assume the galaxy ISM line emission luminosity versus halo mass relations can be described by double power laws with redshift-dependent log normal scatter. The model parameters are then derived by fitting to th…

We discuss the degree to which radio propagation measurements diagnose conditions in the ionized gas of the interstellar medium (ISM). The "signal generators" of the radio waves of interest are extragalactic radio sources (quasars and radio galaxies), as well as Galactic sources, primarily pulsars. The polarized synchrotron radiation of the Galactic non-thermal radiation also serves to probe the ISM, including space between the emitting regions and the solar system. Radio propagation measurements provide unique information on turbulence in the ISM as well as the mean plasma properties such as …
Gaseous flows inside and outside galaxies are key to understanding galaxy evolution, as they regulate their star formation activity across cosmic time. We study the ISM kinematics of 330 CIII or HeII emitters, using far-UV ISM absorption lines detected in the VANDELS spectra. These galaxies span a broad range of stellar masses M$_\ast$ from $10^8$ to $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, and SFRs from 1 to 500 M$_\odot$/yr, in the redshift range between 2 and 5. We find that the bulk ISM velocity v$_{ism}$ is globally in outflow, with v$_{ism}$ of -60 $\pm$ 10 km/s for low ionization gas traced by SiII 1260 An…
ALMA observations of the long wavelength dust continuum are used to estimate the interstellar medium (ISM) masses in a sample of 708 galaxies at z = 0.3 to 4.5 in the COSMOS field. The galaxy sample has known far-infrared luminosities and, hence, star formation rates (SFRs), and stellar masses (M$_{\rm *}$) from the optical-infrared spectrum fitting. The galaxies sample SFRs from the main sequence (MS) to 50 times above the MS. The derived ISM masses are used to determine the dependence of gas mass on redshift, M$_{\rm *}$, and specific SFR (sSFR) relative to the MS. The ISM masses increase ap…
We combine results from deep ALMA observations of massive ($M_*>10^{10}\;M_{\odot}$) galaxies at different redshifts to show that the column density of their inter stellar medium (ISM) rapidly increases towards early cosmic epochs. Our analysis includes objects from the ASPECS and ALPINE large programs, as well as individual observations of $z\sim 6$ QSO hosts. When accounting for non-detections and correcting for selection effects, we find that the median surface density of the ISM of the massive galaxy population evolves as $\sim(1+z)^{3.3}$. This means that the ISM column density towards th…
We present results on the emission-line properties of 1.3<=z<=2.7 galaxies drawn from the complete MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. Specifically, we use observations of the emission-line diagnostic diagram of [OIII]5007/Hb vs. [SII]6717,6731/Ha, i.e., the "[SII] BPT diagram," to gain insight into the physical properties of high-redshift star-forming regions. High-redshift MOSDEF galaxies are offset towards lower [SII]6717,6731/Ha at fixed [OIII]5007/Hb, relative to local galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Furthermore, at fixed [OIII]5007/Hb, local SDSS galaxies fol…
We examine the pressure of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) of Milky-Way sized disk galaxies using fully cosmological SPH+N-body, high resolution simulations. These simulations include explicit treatment of metal-line cooling in addition to dust and self-shielding, $\mathrm{H_{2}}$ based star formation. The 4 simulated halos have masses ranging from a few times $10^{10}$ to nearly $10^{12}$ solar masses. Using a kinematic decomposition of these galaxies into present-day bulge and disk components, we find that the typical pressure of the star-forming ISM in the present-day bulge is hi…
Forthcoming observational facilities will make the exploration of the early universe routine, likely probing large populations of galaxies at very low metallicities. It will therefore be important to have diagnostics that can solidly identify and distinguish different classes of objects in such low metallicity regimes. We use new photoionisation models to develop diagnostic diagrams involving various nebular lines. We show that combinations of these diagrams allow the identification and discrimination of the following classes of objects in the early universe: PopIII and Direct Collapse Black H…
We discuss observations of CII*/CII ratios and cooling rates due to [CII]$\,$158$μ$m emission in high-redshift intervening damped Lyman-$α$ systems towards quasars. We show that the observed bimodality in the CII cooling rates actually reflects a bimodality in the CII*/CII-metallicity plane that can be naturally explained by phase segregation of the neutral medium, without invoking differences in star-formation scenarios. Assuming realistic distributions of the physical parameters to calculate the phase diagrams, we also reproduce qualitatively the metallicity dependence of this bimodality. We…
We examine the redshift evolution of standard strong emission-line diagnostics for Hbeta-selected star-forming galaxies using the local SDSS sample and a new z = 0.2 - 2.3 sample obtained from HST WFC3 grism and Keck DEIMOS and MOSFIRE data. We use the SDSS galaxies to show that there is a systematic dependence of the strong emission-line properties on Balmer-line luminosity, which we interpret as showing that both the N/O abundance and the ionization parameter increase with increasing line luminosity. Allowing for the luminosity dependence tightens the diagnostic diagrams and the metallicity …
Using the Eris zoom-in cosmological simulation of assembly of a Milky Way analog, we study chemical enrichment of stars due to accretion of metal-enriched gas from the interstellar medium during the Galaxy's development. We consider metal-poor and old stars in both Galactic halo and bulge and make use of stellar orbits, gas density and metallicity distributions in Eris. Assuming spherically symmetric Bondi-Hoyle accretion, we find that halo and bulge stars accrete metals at the rate of about 10^-24 solar mass per year and 10^-22 solar mass per year, respectively, at redshifts z < 3, but this a…
High redshift disc galaxies are more gas rich, clumpier, and more turbulent than local Universe galaxies. This early era of galaxy formation imprints the distribution and kinematics of the stars that we observe today, but it is not yet well established how. In this work, we use simulations of isolated Milky Way-mass disc galaxies to study how kinematic properties of stars change when varying the gas fraction. This allows us to quantify the roles played by internal processes, e.g. gas turbulence and gravitational scattering off massive gas clumps, in establishing the observed stellar velocity d…
We compare an analytic model for the evolution of supernova-driven superbubbles with observations of local and high-redshift galaxies, and the properties of intact HI shells in local star-forming galaxies. Our model correctly predicts the presence of superwinds in local star-forming galaxies (e.g., NGC 253) and the ubiquity of outflows near $z \sim 2$. We find that high-redshift galaxies may `capture' 20-50\% of their feedback momentum in the dense ISM (with the remainder escaping into the nearby CGM), whereas local galaxies may contain $\lesssim$10\% of their feedback momentum from the centra…

Studying the average properties of galaxies at a fixed comoving number density over a wide redshift range has become a popular observational method, because it may trace the evolution of galaxies statistically. We test this method by comparing the evolution of galaxies at fixed number density and by following individual galaxies through cosmic time (z=0-5) in cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations from OWLS. Comparing progenitors, descendants, and galaxies selected at fixed number density at each redshift, we find differences of up to a factor of three for galaxy and interstellar medium (ISM…
We present results on the properties of neon emission in $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies drawn from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. Doubly-ionized neon ([NeIII]3869) is detected at $\geq3σ$ in 61 galaxies, representing $\sim$25% of the MOSDEF sample with H$α$, H$β$, and [OIII]$5007$ detections at similar redshifts. We consider the neon emission-line properties of both individual galaxies with [NeIII]3869 detections and composite $z\sim2$ spectra binned by stellar mass. With no requirement of [NeIII]3869 detection, the latter provide a more representative picture of neon emissi…
We present the results of three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of interaction of AGN jets with a dense turbulent two-phase interstellar medium, which would be typical of high redshift galaxies. We describe the effect of the jet on the evolution of the density of the turbulent ISM. The jet driven energy bubble affects the gas to distances up to several kiloparsecs from the injection region. The shocks resulting from such interactions create a multi-phase ISM and radial outflows. One of the striking result of this work is that low power jets (P_jet < 10^{43} erg/s) although le…
We investigate the redshift evolution of the [OIII]/Hb nebular emission line ratio for a sample of galaxies spanning the redshift range 0 < z < 4. We compare the observed evolution to a set of theoretical models which account for the independent evolution of chemical abundance, ionization parameter and interstellar-medium (ISM) pressure in star-forming galaxies with redshift. Accounting for selection effects in the combined datasets, we show that the evolution to higher [OIII]/Hb ratios with redshift is a real physical effect which is best accounted for by a model in which the ionization param…
We present the first direct calibration of strong-line metallicity diagnostics at significant cosmological distances using a sample at z=0.8 drawn from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. Oxygen and neon abundances are derived from measurements of electron temperature and density. We directly compare various commonly used relations between gas-phase metallicity and strong line ratios of O, Ne, and H at z=0.8 and z=0. There is no evolution with redshift at high precision ($Δ\log{\mathrm{O/H}} = -0.01\pm0.03$, $Δ\log{\mathrm{Ne/O}} = 0.01 \pm 0.01$). O, Ne, and H line ratios follow the same locus …
The properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) of the highest-redshift galaxies and quasars provide important indications of the complex interplay between the accretion of baryons onto galaxies, the physics that drives the build-up of stars out of this gas, the subsequent chemical evolution and feedback processes and the reionisation of the Universe. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) continues to play a pivotal role in the characterisation of the ISM of high-redshift galaxies. Observations of the dust continuum emission, atomic fine-structure and molecular lines arising …
Submillimeter rotational lines of H2O are a powerful probe in warm gas regions of the ISM, tracing scales and structures ranging from kpc disks to the most compact and dust-obscured regions of galactic nuclei. The ortho-H2O(423-330) line at 448 GHz, which was recently detected in a local luminous infrared galaxy (Pereira-Santaella et al. 2017), offers a unique constraint on the excitation conditions and ISM properties in deeply buried galaxy nuclei since the line requires high far-IR optical depths to be excited. In this letter, we report the first high-redshift detection of the 448 GHz H2O(42…
ISM comprises multiple components, including molecular, neutral, and ionized gas, and dust, which are related to each other mainly through star formation - some are fuel for star formation (molecular gas) while some are the products of it (ionized gas, dust). To fully understand the physics of star formation and its evolution throughout cosmic time, it is crucial to measure and observe different ISM components of galaxies out to high redshifts. I will review the current status of near-IR studies of galaxies during the peak of star formation activity (z~1-3). Using rest-frame optical emission l…
Combining 66 ultraviolet (UV) spectra and ancillary data from the Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) and 23 LyC observations by earlier studies, we form a statistical sample of star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 0.3$ to study the role of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) gas in the leakage of ionizing radiation. We first constrain the massive star content (ages and metallicities) and UV attenuation, by fitting the stellar continuum with a combination of simple stellar population models. The models, together with accurate LyC flux measurements, allow to determine the absolute LyC photon…
Dust growth via accretion of gas species has been proposed as the dominant process to increase the amount of dust in galaxies. We show here that this hypothesis encounters severe difficulties that make it unfit to explain the observed UV and IR properties of such systems, particularly at high redshifts. Dust growth in the diffuse ISM phases is hampered by (a) too slow accretion rates; (b) too high dust temperatures, and (c) the Coulomb barrier that effectively blocks accretion. In molecular clouds these problems are largely alleviated. Grains are cold (but not colder than the CMB temperature, …
We present an analysis of far--infrared (FIR) [CII] and [OI] fine structure line and continuum observations obtained with $Herschel$/PACS, and CO(1-0) observations obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer, of Lyman Break Analogs (LBAs) at $z\sim 0.2$. The principal aim of this work is to determine the typical ISM properties of $z\sim 1-2$ Main Sequence (MS) galaxies, with stellar masses between $10^{9.5}$ and $10^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$, which are currently not easily detectable in all these lines even with ALMA and NOEMA. We perform PDR modeling and apply different IR diagnostics to de…
We use direct method oxygen abundances in combination with strong optical emission lines, stellar masses ($M_{\star}$), and star formation rates (SFRs) to recalibrate the N2, O3N2, and N2O2 oxygen abundance diagnostics. We stack spectra of $\sim$200,000 star-forming galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in bins of $M_{\star}$ and SFR offset from the star forming main sequence to measure the weak emission lines needed to apply the direct method. All three new calibrations are reliable to within $\pm 0.10$ dex from $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \sim 7.5 - 10.5$ and up to at least $200~M_{\odot…
We present CO(J= 1-0; 3-2; 5-4; 10-9) and 1.2-kpc resolution [CII] line observations of the dusty star-forming galaxy (SFG) HXMM05 -- carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, measuring an unambiguous redshift of z = 2.9850+/-0.0009. We find that HXMM05 is a hyper-luminous infrared galaxy (LIR=(4+/-1)x10^13 Lsun) with a total molecular gas mass of (2.1+/-0.7)x10^11 (alpha_CO/0.8) Msun. The CO(J=1-0) and [CII] emission are extended o…
Diagnosing the physical and chemical conditions within star-forming galaxies (SFGs) is of paramount importance to understanding key components of galaxy formation and evolution: star-formation, gas enrichment, outflows, and accretion. Well established optical emission-line diagnostics used to discern such properties (i.e., metal content, density, strength/shape of ionizing radiation) will be observationally inaccessible for the earliest galaxies, emphasizing the need for robust, reliable interstellar medium (ISM) diagnostics at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. Calibrating these UV diagnostics req…
Recent observations and simulations indicate substantial evolution in the properties of galaxies with time, wherein rotationally-supported and steady thin discs (like those frequently observed in the local universe) emerge from galaxies that are clumpy, irregular, and have bursty star formation rates (SFRs). To better understand the progenitors of local disc galaxies we carry out an analysis of three FIRE-2 simulated galaxies with a mass similar to the Milky Way at redshift z=0. We show that all three galaxies transition from bursty to steady SFRs at a redshift between z=0.5 and z=0.8, and tha…
The UV spectral range (1100 - 3000 A) contains the strongest resonance lines observed in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Analysis of UV line intensity ratios and profile shapes in quasar spectra provide diagnostics of physical and dynamical conditions in the broad line emitting region. This paper discusses properties of UV lines in type-1 AGN spectra, and how they lead an estimate of ionizing photon flux, chemical abundances, radius of the broad line emitting region and central black hole mass. These estimates are meaningfully contextualised through the 4D "eigenvector-1" (4DE1) formalism.
We study influence by models of inter-stellar medium (ISM) on properties of galaxies in cosmological simulations. We examine three models widely used in previous studies. The ISM models impose different equations of state on dense gas. Using zoom-in simulations, we demonstrate that switching the ISM models can control formation of giant clumps in massive discs at redshifts $z\sim1$--$2$ while their initial conditions and the other settings such as stellar feedback are unchanged. Thus, not only feedback but ISM models can also be responsible for clumpy morphologies of simulated galaxies. We fin…
We discuss the rest-frame UV emission between 5< z < 7 from the MareNostrum High-z Universe, a SPH simulation done with more than 2 billion particles. Cosmological simulations of galaxy formation generally overpredict the UV restframe luminosity function at high redshift, both at the bright and faint ends. In this Letter we explore a dust attenuation model where a larger extinction is applied to star populations younger than a given age, mimicking the effect of a clumpy interstellar medium. We show that this scenario fits reasonably well both the UV luminosity functions and the UV-continuum sl…
We study the relationship between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR),ionization state, and gas-phase metallicity for a sample of 41 normal star-forming galaxies at $3 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.7$. The gas-phase oxygen abundance, ionization parameter, and electron density of ionized gas are derived from rest-frame optical strong emission lines measured on near-infrared spectra obtained with Keck/MOSFIRE. We remove the effect of these strong emission lines in the broad-band fluxes to compute stellar masses via spectral energy distribution fitting, while the SFR is derived from the dust-correcte…
Our objectives are to determine the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) and of star-formation in typical star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Following up on our previous multi-wavelength observations with HST, Spitzer, Herschel, and the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), we have studied a strongly lensed z=2.013 galaxy, the arc behind the galaxy cluster MACS J0451+0006, with ALMA to measure the [CII] 158 micron emission line, one of the main coolants of the ISM. [CII] emission from the southern part of this galaxy is detected at 10 $σ$. Taking into account strong gravitational …
We examine the diagnostic power of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) nebular emission lines, and compare them to more commonly used rest-frame optical emission lines, using the test case of a single star-forming knot of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at redshift z~1.7. This galaxy has complete coverage of all the major rest-frame UV and optical emission lines from Magellan/MagE and Keck/NIRSPEC. Using the full suite of diagnostic lines, we infer the physical properties: nebular electron temperature (T_e), electron density (n_e), oxygen abundance (log(O/H)), ionisation parameter (log(q)…
We present measurements of [SIII]$λλ$9069,9531 for a sample of $z\sim1.5$ star-forming galaxies, the first sample with measurements of these lines at z>0.1. We employ the line ratio S$_{32}$$\equiv$[SIII]$λλ$9069,9531/[SII]$λλ$6716,6731 as a novel probe of evolving ISM conditions. Since this ratio includes the low-ionization line [SII], it is crucial that the effects of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) on emission-line ratios be accounted for in $z\sim0$ integrated galaxy spectra, or else that comparisons be made to samples of local HII regions in which DIG emission is not present. We find that S$_{3…
(Abridged) In this paper, we use the Tuffs et al. attenuation - inclination models in ultraviolet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (NIR) bands to investigate the average global dust properties in galaxies as a function of stellar mass $M_{*}$, stellar mass surface density $μ_{*}$, star-formation rate $SFR$, specific star-formation rate $sSFR$, star-formation main-sequence offset $dMS$, and star-formation rate surface density $Σ_{SFR}$ at redshifts $z \sim 0$ and $z \sim 0.7$. We use star-forming galaxies from SDSS ($\sim$ 20000) and GAMA ($\sim$ 2000) to form our low-z sample at $0.04 < z < 0.…

We present detailed observations of photoionization conditions and galaxy kinematics in eleven z$=1.39-2.59$ radio-loud quasar host galaxies. Data was taken with OSIRIS integral field spectrograph (IFS) and the adaptive optics system at the W.M. Keck Observatory that targeted nebular emission lines (H$β$,[OIII],H$α$,[NII]) redshifted into the near-infrared (1-2.4 \micron). We detect extended ionized emission on scales ranging from 1-30 kpc photoionized by stars, shocks, and active galactic nuclei (AGN). Spatially resolved emission-line ratios indicate that our systems reside off the star forma…
We explore the relation between dust and several fundamental properties of simulated galaxies using the Dusty SAGE semi-analytic model. In addition to tracing the standard galaxy properties, Dusty SAGE also tracks cold dust mass in the interstellar medium (ISM), hot dust mass in the halo and dust mass ejected by feedback activity. Based on their ISM dust content, we divide our galaxies into two categories: ISM dust-poor and ISM dust-rich. We split the ISM dust-poor group into two subgroups: halo dust-rich and dust-poor (the latter contains galaxies that lack dust in both the ISM and halo). Hal…
We present a method that derives the dust temperatures and infrared (IR) luminosities of high-redshift galaxies assuming radiation equilibrium in a simple dust and stellar distribution geometry. Using public data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) archive, we studied dust temperatures assuming a clumpy interstellar medium (ISM) model for high-redshift galaxies, then tested the consistency of our results with those obtained using other methods. We find that a dust distribution model assuming a clumpiness of ${\rm log}\,ξ_{\rm clp}=-1.02\pm0.41$ may accurately represent…
We present the first observations from a large-scale survey of nearby (z < 1) long-duration gamma-ray burst (LGRB) host galaxies, which consist of eight rest-frame optical spectra obtained at Keck and Magellan. Along with two host galaxy observations from the literature, we use optical emission line diagnostics to determine metallicities, ionization parameters, young stellar population ages, and star formation rates. We compare the LGRB host environments to a variety of local and intermediate-redshift galaxy populations, as well as the newest grid of stellar population synthesis and photoioniz…
We perform joint modeling of the composite rest-frame far-UV (FUV) and optical spectra of redshift 1.85<z<3.49 star-forming galaxies to deduce key properties of the massive stars, ionized ISM, and neutral ISM, with the aim of investigating the principal factors affecting the production and escape of Ly-alpha (Lya) photons. Our sample consists of 136 galaxies with deep Keck/LRIS and MOSFIRE spectra covering, respectively, Ly-beta through CIII] 1907, 1909; and [OII], [NeIII], H-beta, [OIII], H-alpha, [NII], and [SII]. Spectral and photoionization modeling indicate that the galaxies are uniformly…
This is the first in a series of three papers describing a project with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure abundances of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of 9 nearby star-forming galaxies. The goal is to assess the (in)homogeneities of the multiphase ISM in galaxies where the bulk of metals can be hidden in the neutral phase, yet the metallicity is inferred from the ionized gas in the HII regions. The sample, spanning a wide range in physical properties, is to date the best suited to investigate the metallicity behavior of the neutral gas …
We analyze age-velocity dispersion relations (AVRs) from kinematics of individual stars in eight Local Group galaxies ranging in mass from Carina ($M_{*} \sim 10^{6}$) to M31 ($M_{*} \sim 10^{11}$). Observationally the $σ$ vs. stellar age trends can be interpreted as dynamical heating of the stars by GMCs, bars/spiral arms, or merging subhalos; alternatively the stars could have simply been born out of a more turbulent ISM at high redshift and retain that larger velocity dispersion till present day - consistent with recent IFU studies. To ascertain the dominant mechanism and better understand …
We study the direct gas-phase oxygen abundance using the well-detected auroral [OIII]4363 line in the stacked spectra of a sample of local analogs of high-redshift galaxies. These local analogs share the same location as $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies on the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram. This type of analog has the same ionized interstellar medium (ISM) properties as high-redshift galaxies. We establish empirical metallicity calibrations between the direct gas-phase oxygen abundances ($7.8<12+\log(\rm{O/H})<8.4$) and the N2/O3N2 indices in our local analogs. We find significant systemati…
