We present the first direct calibration of strong-line metallicity diagnostics at significant cosmological distances using a sample at z=0.8 drawn from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. Oxygen and neon abundances are derived from measurements of electron temperature and density. We directly compare various commonly used relations between gas-phase metallicity and strong line ratios of O, Ne, and H at z=0.8 and z=0. There is no evolution with redshift at high precision ($Δ\log{\mathrm{O/H}} = -0.01\pm0.03$, $Δ\log{\mathrm{Ne/O}} = 0.01 \pm 0.01$). O, Ne, and H line ratios follow the same locus at z=0.8 as at z=0 with $\lesssim$0.02 dex evolution and low scatter ($\lesssim$0.04 dex). This suggests little or no evolution in physical conditions of HII regions at fixed oxygen abundance, in contrast to models which invoke more extreme properties at high redshifts. We speculate that offsets observed in the [N II]/H$α$ versus [O III]/H$β$ diagram at high redshift are therefore due to [NII] emission, likely as a result of relatively high N/O abundance. If this is indeed the case, then nitrogen-based metallicity diagnostics suffer from systematic errors at high redshift. Our findings indicate that locally calibrated abundance diagnostics based on alpha-capture elements can be reliably applied at z$\simeq$1 and possibly at much higher redshifts. This constitutes the first firm basis for the widespread use of empirical calibrations in high redshift metallicity studies.
We study the direct gas-phase oxygen abundance using the well-detected auroral [OIII]4363 line in the stacked spectra of a sample of local analogs of high-redshift galaxies. These local analogs share the same location as $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies on the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram. This type of analog has the same ionized interstellar medium (ISM) properties as high-redshift galaxies. We establish empirical metallicity calibrations between the direct gas-phase oxygen abundances ($7.8<12+\log(\rm{O/H})<8.4$) and the N2/O3N2 indices in our local analogs. We find significant systemati…
We derive new empirical calibrations for strong-line diagnostics of gas phase metallicity in local star forming galaxies by uniformly applying the Te method over the full metallicity range probed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). To measure electron temperatures at high metallicity, where the auroral lines needed are not detected in single galaxies, we stacked spectra of more than 110,000 galaxies from the SDSS in bins of log[O II]/H$β$ and log[O III]/H$β$. This stacking scheme does not assume any dependence of metallicity on mass or star formation rate, but only that galaxies with the s…
We derived two semi-empirical calibrations between the metallicity of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) of type-2 Active Galactic Nuclei and the rest-frame of the N V$λ$1240/He II$\lambda1640$, C43=log[(C IV$\lambda1549$+C III]$\lambda1909$)/HeII$\lambda1640$] and C III]$\lambda1909$/C IV$\lambda1549$ emission-line intensity ratios. A metallicity-independent calibration between the ionization parameter and the C III]$\lambda1909$/C IV$\lambda1549$ emission-lines ratio was also derived. These calibrations were obtained comparing ratios of measured UV emission-line intensities, compiled from the lite…
Estimates of gas-phase abundances based on strong-line methods have been calibrated for H~{\scshape ii} regions. Those methods ignore any contribution from the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), which shows enhanced collisional-to-recombination line ratios in comparison to H~{\scshape ii} regions of the same metallicity. Applying strong line methods whilst ignoring the role of the DIG thus systematically overestimates metallicities. Using integral field spectroscopy data, we show how to correct for the DIG contribution and how it biases the mass--metallicity--star formation rate relation.
We derive a new relation between the metallicity of Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and the intensity of the narrow emission-lines ratio $N2O2$=log([N II]$λ$6584/[O II]$λ$3727). The calibration of this relation was performed determining the metallicity ($Z$) of a sample of 58 AGNs through a diagram containing the observational data and the results of a grid of photoionization models obtained with the Cloudy code. We find the new $Z/Z_\odot$-$N2O2$ relation using the obtained metallicity values and the corresponding observational emission line intensities for each object of the sample. …
Using integral field spectroscopic data of 24 nearby spiral galaxies obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), we derive empirical calibrations to determine the metallicity of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and/or of the low-ionisation emission region (LI(N)ER) in passive regions of galaxies. To do so, we identify a large number of HII--DIG/LIER pairs that are close enough to be chemically homogeneous and we measure the metallicity difference of each DIG/LIER region relative to its HII region companion when applying the same strong line calibrations. The O3N2 diagnostic ($=$lo…
The abundance of metals in galaxies is a key parameter which permits to distinguish between different galaxy formation and evolution models. Most of the metallicity determinations are based on optical line ratios. However, the optical spectral range is subject to dust extinction and, for high-z objects (z > 3), some of the lines used in optical metallicity diagnostics are shifted to wavelengths not accessible to ground based observatories. For this reason, we explore metallicity diagnostics using far-infrared (IR) line ratios which can provide a suitable alternative in such situations. To inve…
Based on SDSS g, r and SCUSS (South Galactic Cap of u-band Sky Survey) $u$ photometry, we develop a photometric calibration for estimating the stellar metallicity from $u-g$ and $g-r$ colors by using the SDSS spectra of 32,542 F- and G-type main sequence stars, which cover almost $3700$ deg$^{2}$ in the south Galactic cap. The rms scatter of the photometric metallicity residuals relative to spectrum-based metallicity is $0.14$ dex when $g-r<0.4$, and $0.16$ dex when $g-r>0.4$. Due to the deeper and more accurate magnitude of SCUSS $u$ band, the estimate can be used up to the faint magnitude of…
We have observed a sample of 14 nearby ($z \sim 0.03$) star-forming blue compact galaxies in the rest-frame far-UV ($\sim1150-2200 Å$) using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also generated a grid of stellar population synthesis models using the Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis code, allowing us to compare observations and theoretical predictions for the SiIV_1400 and CIV_1550 UV indices; both are comprised of a blend of stellar wind and interstellar lines and have been proposed as metallicity diagnostics in the UV. Our models and observations both demons…
We present a new calibration of the Calcium II Triplet equivalent widths versus [Fe/H], constructed upon K giant stars in the Galactic bulge. This calibration will be used to derive iron abundances for the targets of the GIBS survey, and in general it is especially suited for solar and supersolar metallicity giants, typical of external massive galaxies. About 150 bulge K giants were observed with the GIRAFFE spectrograph at VLT, both at resolution R~20,000 and at R~6,000. In the first case, the spectra allowed us to perform direct determination of Fe abundances from several unblended Fe lines,…
In this study, photometric metallicity and absolute magnitude calibrations were derived using F-G spectral type main-sequence stars in the Solar neighbourhood with precise spectroscopic, photometric and Gaia astrometric data for UBV photometry. The sample consists of 504 main-sequence stars covering the temperature, surface gravity and colour index intervals $5300<T_{eff} < 7300$ K, $\log g > 4$ (cgs) and $0.3<(B-V)_0<0.8$ mag, respectively. Stars with relative trigonometric parallax errors $σ_π/π\leq0.01$ were preferred from Gaia DR2 data for the estimation of their $M_V$ absolute magnitudes.…
The gas metallicity of galaxies is often estimated using strong emission lines such as the optical lines of [OIII] and [OII]. The most common measure is "R23", defined as ([OII]$λ$$λ$3726, 3729 + [OIII]$λ$$λ$4959,5007)/H$β$. Most calibrations for these strong-line metallicity indicators are for continuum selected galaxies. We report a new empirical calibration of R23 for extreme emission-line galaxies using a large sample of about 800 star-forming green pea galaxies with reliable T$_e$-based gas-phase metallicity measurements. This sample is assembled from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data …
High-z galaxy gas-phase metallicities are usually determined through observations of strong optical emission lines with calibrations tied to the local universe. Recent debate has questioned if these calibrations are valid in the high-z universe. We investigate this by analysing a sample of 16 galaxies at z~2 available in the literature, and for which the metallicity can be robustly determined using oxygen auroral lines. The sample spans a redshift range of 1.4 < z < 3.6, has metallicities of 7.4-8.4 in 12+log(O/H) and stellar masses 10^7.5-10^11 Msun. We test commonly used strong line diagnost…
We present a study of the consequences of an initial mass function that is stochastically sampled on the main emission lines used for gas-phase metallicity estimates in extra-galactic sources. We use the stochastic stellar population code SLUG and the photoionisation code Cloudy to show that the stochastic sampling of the massive end of the mass function can lead to clear variations in the relative production of energetic emission lines such as [OIII] relative to that of Balmer lines. We use this to study the impact on the Te, N2O2, R23 and O3N2 metallicity calibrators. We find that stochastic…
We extend our previous calibration of the infrared Ca II triplet as metallicity indicator to the metal-poor regime by including observations of 55 field stars with [Fe/H] down to -4.0 dex. While we previously solved the saturation at high-metallicity using a combination of a Lorentzian plus a Gaussian to reproduce the line profiles, in this paper we address the non-linearity at low-metallicity following the suggestion of Starkenburg et al 2010 of adding two non-linear terms to the relation among the [Fe/H], luminosity, and strength of the Calcium triplet lines. Our calibration thus extends fro…
We present a semi-empirical calibration between the metallicity ($Z$) of Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nuclei and the $N2$=log([N II]$λ$6584/H$α$) emission-line intensity ratio. This calibration was derived through the [O III]$λ$5007/[O II]$λ$3727 versus $N2$ diagram containing observational data and photoionization model results obtained with the Cloudy code. The observational sample consists of 463 confirmed Seyfert 2 nuclei (redshift $z < 0.4$) taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 dataset. The obtained $Z$-$N2$ relation is valid for the range $0.3 < (Z/Z_{\odot}) < 2.0$ which corresponds…
Strong line metallicity calibrations are widely used to determine the gas phase metallicities of individual HII regions and entire galaxies. Over a decade ago, based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4), Kewley \& Ellison published the coefficients of third-order polynomials that can be used to convert between different strong line metallicity calibrations for global galaxy spectra. Here, we update the work of Kewley \& Ellison in three ways. First, by using a newer data release (DR7), we approximately double the number of galaxies used in polynomial fits, providing statis…
Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) is prevalent in star-forming galaxies. Using a sample of 365 nearly face-on star-forming galaxies observed by MaNGA, we demonstrate how DIG in star-forming galaxies impacts the measurements of emission line ratios, hence the interpretation of diagnostic diagrams and gas-phase metallicity measurements. At fixed metallicity, DIG-dominated low Hα surface brightness regions display enhanced [SII]/Hα, [NII]/Hα, [OII]/Hβ, and [OI]/Hα. The gradients in these line ratios are determined by metallicity gradients and Hα surface brightness. In line ratio diagnostic diagrams, cont…
Metallicity of Active Galactic Nuclei from ultraviolet and optical emission lines-II. Revisiting the $C43$ metallicity calibration and its implications
We present optical-line gas metallicity diagnostics established by the combination of local SDSS galaxies and the largest compilation of extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) including new EMPGs identified by the Subaru EMPRESS survey. A total of 103 EMPGs are included that cover a large parameter space of magnitude (Mi=-19 to -7) and H-beta equivalent width (10-600 Ang), i.e., wide ranges of stellar mass and star-formation rate. Using reliable metallicity measurements of the direct method for these galaxies, we derive the relationships between strong optical-line ratios and gas-phase metallic…
In an earlier paper we modeled the far-infrared emission from a star-forming galaxy using the photoionisation code CLOUDY and presented metallicity sensitive diagnostics based on far-infrared fine structure line ratios. Here, we focus on the applicability of the [OIII]88/[NII]122 microns line ratio as a gas phase metallicity indicator in high redshift submillimetre luminous galaxies. The [OIII]88/[NII]122 microns ratio is strongly dependent on the ionization parameter (which is related to the total number of ionizing photons) as well as the gas electron density. We demonstrate how the ratio of…
We used the data of 701 stars covering the colour index interval 0.32<B-V<=1.16, with metallicities -1.76<=[Fe/H]<=+0.40 dex, which were taken from PASTEL catalogue and estimated metallicity dependent guillotine factors which provide a more accurate metallicity calibration. We reduced the metallicities of 11 authors to the metallicities of Valenti & Fischer (2005), thus obtained a homogeneous set of data which increased the accuracy of the calibration, i.e. [Fe/H]=-14.316*delta^{2}_{0.6}-3.557*delta_{0.6}+0.105. Comparison of the metallicity residuals, for two sets of data, based on the metall…
The Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation (or Leavitt law) has served as the first rung of the most widely used extragalactic distance ladder and is central to the determination of the local value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$). We investigate the influence of metallicity on Cepheid brightness, a term that significantly improves the overall fit of the distance ladder, to better define its wavelength dependence. To this aim, we compare the PL relations obtained for three Cepheid samples having distinct chemical composition (in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds) and focusing on the use of im…
We present an absolute magnitude calibration for red giants with the colour magnitude diagrams of six Galactic clusters with different metallicities i.e. M92, M13, M5, 47 Tuc, M67, and NGC 6791. The combination of the absolute magnitude offset from the fiducial of giant sequence of the cluster M5 with the corresponding metallicity offset provides calibration for absolute magnitude estimation for red giants for a given (B-V)o colour. The calibration is defined in the colour interval 0.75<=(B-V)o<=1.50 mag and it covers the metallicity interval -2.15<[Fe/H]<=+0.37 dex. 91% of the absolute magnit…
We present metallicity and photometric parallax calibrations for the F and G type dwarfs with photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic data. The sample consists of 168 dwarf stars covering the colour, iron abundance and absolute magnitude intervals $0.30<(B-V)_0<0.68$ mag, $-2.0<[Fe/H]<0.4$ dex and $3.4<M_V<6.0$ mag, respectively. The means and standard deviations of the metallicity and absolute magnitude residuals are small, i.e. $\langleΔ[Fe/H]_{res}\rangle=0$ and $σ=0.134$ dex, and $\langleΔ(M_V)_{res}\rangle=0$ and $σ=0.174$ mag, respectively, which indicate accurate metallicity and phot…
We use the newest generation of the Starburst99/Mappings code to generate an extensive suite of models to facilitate detailed studies of star-forming galaxies and their ISM properties, particularly at low metallicities. The new models used include a rigorous treatment of metal opacities in the population synthesis modeling and more detailed dust physics in the photoionization code. These models span a wide range of physical parameters including metallicity, ionization parameter, and the adoption of both a instantaneous burst and continuous star formation history. We examine the agreement betwe…
There is a long history of using optical emission and absorption lines to constrain the metallicity and ionization parameters of gas in galaxies. However, comparable diagnostics are less well-developed for the UV. Here, we assess the diagnostic potential of both absorption and emission features in the UV and evaluate the diagnostics against observations of local and high redshift galaxies. We use the CloudyFSPS nebular emission model of Byler et al. 2017, extended to include emission predictions in the UV, to evaluate the metallicity sensitivity of established UV stellar absorption indices, an…
Our ability to study the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the earliest galaxies will rely on emission line diagnostics at rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. In this work, we identify metallicity-sensitive diagnostics using UV emission lines. We compare UV-derived metallicities with standard, well-established optical metallicities using a sample of galaxies with rest-frame UV and optical spectroscopy. We find that the He2-O3C3 diagnostic (He II 1640 / C III 1906,1909 vs. O III 1666 / C III 1906,1909) is a reliable metallicity tracer, particularly at low metallicity (12+log(O…
Simple relations for deriving the oxygen abundance in HII regions with intensities of the three strong emission lines R_2, R_3, and N_2 (R calibration) or S_2, R_3, and N_2 (S calibration) in their spectra are suggested. A sample of 313 reference HII regions of the counterpart method is used as calibrating data points. Relations for the determination of nitrogen abundances, the R calibration, are also constructed. We find that the oxygen and nitrogen abundances in high-metallicity HII regions can be estimated using the intensities of the two strong lines R_2 and N_2 (or S_2 and N_2 for oxygen)…
The age calibration of the Washington deltaT1 index is mainly used to estimate ages of star clusters older than 1 Gyr, no age-metallicity degeneracy effect is considered. We have profusely exploited synthetic T1 versus C-T1 colour magnitude diagrams aiming at exploring the intrinsic behaviour of the deltaT1 index. The analysis shows that deltaT1 varies with age and metal content as well. In general, the dependence on age weakens for ages greater than ~ 6 Gyr, and results even less sensitive to age as the metallicity decreases. For ages younger than ~ 5 Gyr deltaT1 shows a strong correlation wi…
We present a systematic study of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in M83 and its effects on the measurement of metallicity gradients at varying resolution scales. Using spectrophotometric data cubes of M83 obtained at the 2.5m duPont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the TYPHOON program, we separate the HII regions from the DIG using the [SII]/H$α$ ratio, HIIphot (HII finding algorithm) and the H$α$ surface brightness. We find that the contribution to the overall H$α$ luminosity is approximately equal for the HII and DIG regions. The data is then rebinned to simulate low-resolution…
Radial metallicity trends provide a key indicator of physical processes such as star formation and radial gas migration within a galaxy. Large IFU surveys allow for detailed studies of these radial variations, with recent observations detecting central dips in the metallicity, which may trace the impact of various evolutionary processes. However, the origin of these dips has not been conclusively determined, with suggestions that they may be diagnostic dependent. In this paper, we use the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey to investigate whether the observed dips represent genuine decreases in the central m…
In this paper, we discuss the properties of CMDs, age, metallicity and radial velocities of eight massive LMC clusters using data taken from FORS2 multiobject spectrograph at the 8.2-meter VLT/UT1. The strong near-infrared Ca II triplet (CaT) lines of RGB stars obtained from the high S/N spectra are used to determine the metallicity and radial velocity of cluster members. We report for the first time spectroscopically determined metallicity values for four clusters based on the mean [Fe/H] value of ~10 cluster members each. We found two concentrations in the distribution of ages of the target …

We present the updated photometric calibration of the twelve optical passbands for the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) second data release (DR2), comprising 1088 pointings of two square degrees, and study the systematic impact of metallicity in the stellar locus technique. The [Fe/H] metallicity from LAMOST DR5 for 146184 high-quality calibration stars, defined with S/N > 10 in J-PLUS passbands and S/N > 3 in Gaia parallax, was used to compute the metallicity-dependent stellar locus (ZSL). The initial homogenization of J-PLUS photometry, performed with a unique stellar lo…
We suggest a simple analytic approximation for magnitudes and hence distances of Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars in Sloan colours. Precedent formulations do not offer a simple closed formula, nor do they cover the full dependences, e.g. on metallicity. Further, using BHB star samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we validate our distance calibration directly on field stars instead of globular clusters and assess the performance of other available distance calibrations. Our method to statistically measure distances is sufficiently accurate to measure the colour and metallicity dep…
Existing star-forming vs. active galactic nucleus (AGN) classification schemes using optical emission-line diagnostics mostly fail for low-metallicity and/or highly star-forming galaxies, missing AGN in typical $z\sim0$ dwarfs. To recover AGN in dwarfs with strong emission lines (SELs), we present a classification scheme optimizing the use of existing optical diagnostics. We use SDSS emission-line catalogs overlapping the volume- and mass-limited RESOLVE and ECO surveys to determine the AGN percentage in SEL dwarfs. Our photoionization grids show that the [O III]/H$β$ versus [S II]/H$α$ diagra…
We used the updated [Fe/H] abundances of 168 F-G type dwarfs and calibrated them to a third order polynomial in terms of reduced ultraviolet excess, $δ_{0.41}$ defined with $ugr$ data in the SDSS. We estimated the $M_g$ absolute magnitudes for the same stars via the re-reduced Hipparcos parallaxes and calibrated the absolute magnitude offsets, $ΔM_g$, relative to the intrinsic sequence of Hyades to a third order polynomial in terms of $δ_{0.41}$. The ranges of the calibrations are $-2<$[Fe/H]$\leq$0.3 dex and $4<M_g\leq6$ mag. The mean of the residuals and the corresponding standard deviation …
We use the most homogeneous $Geneva$ seven-colour photometric system to derive new metallicity calibrations for early A- to K-type stars that cover both, dwarf stars and giants. The calibrations are based on several spectroscopic data sets that were merged to a common scale, and we applied them to open cluster data to obtain an additional proof of the metallicity scale and accuracy. In total, metallicities of 54 open clusters are presented. The accuracy of the calibrations for single stars is in general below 0.1 dex, but for the open cluster sample with mean values based on several stars we f…

We examine the correlations of star formation rate (SFR) and gas-phase metallicity $Z$. We first predict how the SFR, cold gas mass and $Z$ will change with variations in inflow rate or in star-formation efficiency (SFE) in a simple gas-regulator framework. The changes $Δ{\rm log}$SFR and $Δ{\rm log} Z$, are found to be negatively (positively) correlated when driving the gas-regulator with time-varying inflow rate (SFE). We then study the correlation of $Δ{\rm log}$sSFR (specific SFR) and $Δ{\rm log}$(O/H) from observations, at both $\sim$100 pc and galactic scales, based on two 2-dimensional …

We review the use of emission-lines for understanding galaxy evolution, focusing on excitation source, metallicity, ionization parameter, ISM pressure and electron density. We show that the UV, optical and infrared contain complementary diagnostics that can probe the conditions within different nebular ionization zones. In anticipation of upcoming telescope facilities, we provide new self-consistent emission-line diagnostic calibrations for complete spectral coverage from the UV to the infrared. These diagnostics can be used in concert to understand how fundamental galaxy properties have chang…
The ionizing source of Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Regions (LINERs) is uncertain. Because of this, an empirical relation to determine the chemical abundances of these objects has not been proposed. In this work, for the first time, we derived two semi-empirical calibrations based on photoionization models to estimate the oxygen abundance of LINERS as a function of the $N2$ and $O3N2$ emission-line intensity ratios. These relations were calibrated using oxygen abundance estimations obtained by comparing the observational emission-line ratios of 43 LINER galaxies (taken from the MaNGA survey…
The next generation near- and mid-infrared Galactic surveys will yield a large number of new highly obscured star clusters. Detailed characterization of these new objects with spectroscopy is time-consuming. Diagnostic tools that will be able to characterize clusters based only on the available photometry will be needed to study large samples of the newly found objects. The brightness difference between the red clump and the main-sequence turn-off point have been used as a model-independent age calibrator for clusters with ages from a few 10$^8$ to 10$^{10}$ yr in the optical. Here we apply fo…

Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) Galaxies in the nearby Universe provide a means for studying feedback mechanisms and star-formation processes in low-metallicity environments in great detail. Due to their vicinity, these local analogues to young galaxies are well suited for high-resolution studies that would be unfeasible for primordial galaxies in the high-redshift universe. Here we present HST-WFC3 observations of one such BCD, Mrk 71, one of the most powerful local starbursts known, in the light of [O II], He II, Hb, [O III], Ha, and [S II]. At D=3.44 Mpc, this extensive suite of emission line imag…
The HII region oxygen abundance is a key observable for studying chemical properties of galaxies. Deriving oxygen abundances using optical spectra often relies on empirical strong-line calibrations calibrated to the direct method. Existing calibrations usually adopt linear or polynomial functions to describe the non-linear relationships between strong line ratios and Te oxygen abundances. Here, I explore the possibility of using an artificial neural network model to construct a non-linear strong-line calibration. Using about 950 literature HII region spectra with auroral line detections, I bui…
