We investigate experimentally and theoretically the lasing behavior of dielectric microcavity lasers with chaotic ray dynamics. Experiments show multimode lasing for both D-shaped and stadium-shaped wave-chaotic cavities. Theoretical calculations also find multimode lasing for different shapes, sizes and refractive indices. While there are quantitative differences between the theoretical lasing spectra of the stadium and D-cavity, due to the presence of scarred modes with anomalously high quality factors, these differences decrease as the system size increases, and are also substantially reduced when the effects of surface roughness are taken into account. Lasing spectra calculations are based on Steady-State Ab Initio Laser Theory, and indicate that gain competition is not sufficient to result in single-mode lasing in these systems.
We investigated experimentally the ray-wave correspondence in organic microlasers of various triangular shapes. Triangular billiards are of interest since they are the simplest cases of polygonal billiards and the existence and properties of periodic orbits in triangles are not yet fully understood. The microlasers with symmetric shapes that were investigated exhibited states localized on simple periodic orbits, and their lasing characteristics like spectra and far-field distributions could be well explained by the properties of the periodic orbits. Furthermore, asymmetric triangles that do no…
Cuboid-shaped organic microcavities containing a pyrromethene laser dye and supported upon a photonic crystal have been investigated as an approach to reducing the lasing threshold of the cavities. Multiphoton lithography facilitated fabrication of the cuboid cavities directly on the substrate or on the decoupling structure, while similar structures were fabricated on the substrate by UV lithography for comparison. Significant reduction of the lasing threshold by a factor of ~30 has been observed for cavities supported by the photonic crystal relative to those fabricated on the substrate. The …
We show from ab initio laser theory that by choosing an appropriate spatial pump profile, many different spatial modes of a typical microlaser can be turned on at the same pump energy, substantially increasing the number, N, of simultaneous lasing modes. The optimal pump profile can be obtained simply from knowledge of the space-dependent saturated gain profile when the system is uniformly pumped up to the Nth modal threshold. We test this general result by applying it to a two-dimensional diffusive random laser and a microdisk laser. Achieving highly multimode lasing at reasonable pump powers…
We study spectral and far-field characteristics of lasing emission from stadium-shaped semiconductor (InGaAsP) microlasers. We demonstrate that the correspondence between a lasing far-field emission pattern and the result of a ray simulation becomes better as the number of lasing modes increases. This phenomenon is reproduced in the wave calculation of the cavity modes.
A pump source is one of the essential prerequisites in order to achieve lasing, and, in most cases, a stronger pump leads to higher laser power at the output. However, this behavior may be suppressed if two pump beams are used. In this work, it is shown that lasing around the 1600 nm band can be suppressed completely if two pumps, at wavelengths of 980 nm and 1550 nm, are applied simultaneously to a Yb:Er-doped microlaser, whereas it can be revived by switching one of them off. This phenomenon can be explained by assuming that the existence of one pump (980 nm) changes the role of the other pu…
Efficient nonresonant optical pumping of a high-Q scar mode in a two-dimensional quadrupole-deformed microlaser has been demonstrated based on ray and wave chaos. Three-fold enhancement in the lasing power was achieved at a properly chosen pumping angle. The experimental result is consistent with ray tracing and wave overlap integral calculations.
Sub-Poisson field with much reduced fluctuations in a cavity can boost quantum precision measurements via cavity-enhanced light-matter interactions. Strong coupling between an atom and a cavity mode has been utilized to generate highly sub-Poisson fields. However, a macroscopic number of optical intracavity photons with more than 3dB variance reduction in a setting of laser has not been possible. Here, we report sub-Poisson field lasing in a microlaser operating with hundreds of atoms with well-regulated atom-cavity coupling and interaction time. Its photon-number variance was 4dB below the st…
We demonstrate that due to strong modal interactions through cross-gain saturation, the onset of a new lasing mode can switch off an existing mode via a negative power slope. In this process of interaction-induced mode switching (IMS) the two involved modes maintain their identities, i.e. they do not change their spatial field patterns or lasing frequencies. For a fixed pump profile, a simple analytic criterion for the occurrence of IMS is given in terms of their self- and cross-interaction coefficients and non-interacting thresholds, which is verified for the example of a two-dimensional micr…
Dynamical radiation pressure effects in cavity optomechanical systems give rise to self-sustained oscillations or `phonon lasing' behavior, producing stable oscillators up to GHz frequencies in nanoscale devices. Like in photonic lasers, phonon lasing normally occurs in a single mechanical mode. We show here that phase-locked, multimode phonon lasing can be established in a multimode optomechanical system through Floquet dynamics induced by a temporally modulated laser drive. We demonstrate this concept in a suitably engineered silicon photonic nanocavity coupled to multiple GHz-frequency mech…
We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as {\it open} resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the appropiate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasi bound states (QBS) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBS are…
Microlasers are of ample interest for advancing quantum chaos studies at the intersection of wave dynamics and geometric optics in resonators. However, the mode structures of three-dimensional microlasers without rotational symmetry remain largely unexplored due to fabrication limitations. Previous studies of such cavities revealed lasing modes localized on periodic orbits exclusively confined to a single plane. In this work, we report on the characterization of pyramidal, polymer-based microlasers and demonstrate that the lasing modes are localized on a genuine three-dimensional periodic orbi…
Microlaser with multiple lasing bands is critical in various applications, such as full-colour display, optical communications and computing. Here, we propose a simple and efficient method for homogeneously doping rare earth elements into a silica whispering-gallery-mode microcavity. By this method, we demonstrate simultaneous and stable lasing covering ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared bands in an ultrahigh-Q (exceeding 108) Er-Yb co-doped silica microsphere under room temperature and continuous-wave pump for the first time. The lasing thresholds of the 380, 410, 450, 560, 660, 800, 1080…

We investigate the possibility of bistable lasing in microcavity lasers as opposed to bulk lasers. To that end, the dynamic behavior of a microlaser featuring two coupled, interacting modes is analytically investigated within the framework of a semiclassical laser model, suitable for a wide range of cavity shapes and mode geometries. Closed-form coupled mode equations are obtained for all classes of laser dynamics. We show that bistable operation is possible in all of these classes. In the simplest case (class-A lasers) bistability is shown to result from an interplay between coherent (populat…
White laser covering the visible color spectrum is critical in various applications including vivid display, holographic imaging and light-based version of Wi-Fi, but it is still challenging to realize the white microlaser due to the rigorous requirement in the balance between the optical gain and the feedback at different wavelengths. Here, we employ Tm, Er and Yb ions corporately for the upconversion white lasing in a single ultrahigh quality (Q) (up to 108) doped microcavity, where the thresholds of the red, green and blue lasers are about 90, 500 and 300 μW, respectively. To the best of ou…
We report on fabrication of whispering-gallery-mode microlasers in a Nd:glass chip by femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. Main fabrication procedures include the fabrication of freestanding microdisks supported by thin pillars by femtosecond laser ablation of the glass substrate immersed in water, followed by CO2 laser annealing for surface smoothing. Lasing is observed at a pump threshold as low as ~69 μW at room temperature with a continuous-wave laser diode operating at 780nm. This technique allows for fabrication of microcavities of high quality factors in various diel…
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasers are well-known for their small sizes, low thresholds and narrow linewidths, and have been the subject of research and development for more than two decades. However most of the initial reports and studies have focused on near-IR and visible WGM microlasers. Recent advances in the synthesis, doping and processing of high quality mid-IR transparent glasses have provided the means to extend the wavelengths of these microlasers to the mid-IR range. In this paper, we present a detailed characterization of a compact and low-cost mid-IR spherical WGM microlaser ba…
A formula for the laser linewidth of arbitrary cavities in the multimode non-linear regime is derived from a scattering analysis of the solutions to semiclassical laser theory. The theory generalizes previous treatments of the effects of gain and openness described by the Petermann factor. The linewidth is expressed using quantities based on the non-linear scattering matrix, which can be computed from steady-state ab initio laser theory; unlike previous treatments, no passive cavity or phenomenological parameters are involved. We find that low cavity quality factor, combined with significant d…
We apply ray-optical methods to dielectric optical microcavities in the shape of triangles made of low refractive index material. We find ray trajectories that maximize the intensity inside the cavity to determine the far-field emission characteristics and to complement the concept of the unstable manifold applicable to chaotic microlasers. As these maximum intensity trajectories need not to be periodic, we suggest that they provide a more general explanation for emission patterns of microlasers than short periodic orbits. Further, the geometrical optics description is extended by the inclusio…
The generation of chiral laser emission offers promising opportunities for modern photonic applications and the study of chiral light-mater interactions. Despite the great process made in recent years, the direct generation of chiral lasers with controllable chirality remains challenging in a microcavity. This study reports a strategy to control the emission chirality of whispering-gallery-mode organic microlasers with topological-structured chiral liquid crystal droplets. The findings suggest that the topological transformations in a microdroplet can induce different optical chirality strengt…
Chaotic semiconductor lasers have been widely investigated for high-speed random bit generation, which is applied for the generation of cryptographic keys for classical and quantum cryptography systems. Here, we propose and demonstrate a self-chaotic microlaser with enhanced chaotic bandwidth for high-speed random bit generation. By designing tri-mode interaction in a deformed square microcavity laser, we realize a self-chaotic laser caused by two-mode internal interaction, and achieve an enhanced chaotic standard bandwidth due to the photon-photon resonance effect by introducing the third mod…
Understanding random lasing is a formidable theoretical challenge. Unlike conventional lasers, random lasers have no resonator to trap light, they are highly multimode with potentially strong modal interactions and they are based on disordered gain media, where photons undergo random multiple scattering. Interference effects notoriously modify the propagation of waves in such random media, but their fate in the presence of nonlinearity and interactions is poorly understood. Here, we present a semiclassical theory for multimode random lasing in the strongly scattering regime. We show that Ander…
The emission from open cavities with non-integrable features remains a challenging problem of practical as well as fundamental relevance. Square-shaped dielectric microcavities provide a favorable case study with generic implications for other polygonal resonators. We report on a joint experimental and theoretical study of square-shaped organic microlasers exhibiting a far-field emission that is strongly concentrated in the directions parallel to the side walls of the cavity. A semiclassical model for the far-field distributions is developed that is in agreement with even fine features of the …
We present a multimode laser-linewidth theory for arbitrary cavity structures and geometries that contains nearly all previously known effects and also finds new nonlinear and multimode corrections, e.g. a bad-cavity correction to the Henry $α$ factor and a multimode Schawlow--Townes relation (each linewidth is proportional to a sum of inverse powers of all lasing modes). Our theory produces a quantitatively accurate formula for the linewidth, with no free parameters, including the full spatial degrees of freedom of the system. Starting with the Maxwell--Bloch equations, we handle quantum and …
We have demonstrated an ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microsphere laser based on the evanescent-wave-coupled gain. Dye molecules outside the sphere near the equator were excited, resulting in WGM lasing in the lowest radial mode order. The loaded quality factor of the lasing WGM was 8(2)\times 10^9, the highest ever achieved in the microlaser.
We present an \emph{ab-initio} semi-analytical solution for the noise spectrum of complex-cavity micro-structured lasers, including central Lorentzian peaks at the multimode lasing frequencies and additional sidepeaks due to relaxation-oscillation (RO) dynamics. In~Ref.~1, we computed the central-peak linewidths by solving generalized laser rate equations, which we derived from the Maxwell--Bloch equations by invoking the fluctuation--dissipation theorem to relate the noise correlations to the steady-state lasing properties; Here, we generalize this approach and obtain the entire laser spectru…

We propose the new concept of a switchable multimode microlaser. As a generic, realistic model of a multimode microresonator a system of two coupled defects in a two-dimensional photonic crystal is considered. We demonstrate theoretically that lasing of the cavity into one selected resonator mode can be caused by injecting an appropriate optical pulse at the onset of laser action (injection seeding). Temporal mode-to-mode switching by re-seeding the cavity after a short cool-down period is demonstrated by direct numerical solution. A qualitative analytical explanation of the mode switching in …
We investigate the lasing action in coupled multi-row nanopillar waveguides of periodic or fractal structure using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, coupled to the laser rate equations. Such devices exhibit band splitting with distinct and controllable supermode formation. We demonstrate that selective lasing into each of the supermodes is possible. The structure acts as a microlaser with selectable wavelength. Lasing mode selection is achieved by means of coaxial injection seeding with a Gaussian signal of appropriate transverse amplitude and phase profiles. Based on this we pr…
Whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators combine small optical mode volumes with narrow resonance linewidths, making them exciting platforms for a variety of applications. Here we report a flying WGM microlaser, realized by optically trapping a dye-doped microparticle within a liquid-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) using a CW laser and then pumping it with a pulsed excitation laser whose wavelength matches the absorption band of the dye. The laser emits into core-guided modes that can be detected at the endfaces of the HC-PCF. Using radiation forces, the microlaser can be fr…

We review recent extensions of semiclassical multimode laser theory to open systems with overlapping resonances and inhomogeneous refractive index. An essential ingredient of the theory are biorthogonal quasimodes that describe field decay in an open passive system and are used as a basis for lasing modes. We discuss applications of the semiclassical theory, as well as other experimental and numerical results related to random lasing with mode competition.
We describe a novel method for making microbottle-shaped lasers by using a CO$_2$ laser to melt Er:Yb glass onto silica microcapillaries or fibres. This is realised by the fact that the two glasses have different melting points. The CO$_2$ laser power is controlled to flow the doped glass around the silica cylinder. In the case of a capillary, the resulting geometry is a hollow, microbottle-shaped resonator. This is a simple method for fabricating a number of glass WGM lasers with a wide range of sizes on a single, micron-scale structure. The Er:Yb doped glass outer layer is pumped at 980 nm v…
Single vs. multimode laser beams have been compared for laser ablation on steel samples. Laser plasma properties and analytical capabilities (precision, limit of detection) were used as key parameters for comparison. Peak fluence at focal spot has been observed to be higher for Gaussian beam despite ~14-fold lower pulse energy. A comparison of Gaussian and multimode beams with equal energy was carried out in order to estimate influence of beam profile only. Single mode lasing (Gaussian beam) results in better reproducibility of analytical signals compared to multimode lasing while laser energy…
We report laser emission from single, stationary, Rhodamine B-doped glycerol/water microdroplets located on a superhydrophobic surface. In the experiments, a pulsed, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser operating at 532 nm was used as the excitation source. The microdroplets ranged in diameter from a few to 20 um. Lasing was achieved in the red-shifted portion of the dye emission spectrum with threshold fluences as low as 750 J/cm2. Photobleaching was observed when the microdroplets were pumped above threshold. In certain cases, multimode lasing was also observed and attributed to the simultaneous l…
We demonstrate an effective control of nonlinear interactions of lasing modes in a semiconductor microdisk cavity by shaping the pump profile. A target mode is selected at the expense of its competing modes either by increasing their lasing thresholds or suppressing their power slopes above the lasing threshold. Despite of strong spatial overlap of the lasing modes at the disk boundary, adaptive pumping enables an efficient selection of any lasing mode to be the dominant one, leading to a switch of lasing frequency. The theoretical analysis illustrates both linear and nonlinear effects of sele…
Comparative study of thin film Cholesteric Liquid Crystal (CLC) lasers made from different materials and optically pumped by external solid state laser reveals a striking dependence of lasing behaviour (ranging from single mode at the edge of the selective reflection band to multimode lasing) on the morphology and microstructure of CLC films. The materials studied belong to two groups: low molar mass liquid crystals and polymers. It is shown that the orientation of individual chiral domains and fluctuations in helical pitch contribute significantly to the type of lasing displayed by the materi…
We investigate the range of validity of the recently developed steady-state ab-initio laser theory (SALT). While very efficient in describing various microlasers, SALT is conventionally believed not to be applicable to lasers featuring fully or nearly degenerate pairs of resonator modes above the lasing threshold. Here we demonstrate how SALT can indeed be extended to describe such cases as well, with the effect that we significantly broaden the theory's scope. In particular, we show how to use SALT in conjunction with a linear stability analysis to obtain stable single-mode lasing solutions t…
We study the dynamics of multimode polariton lasing in organic microcavities by using a second-order cumulant equation approach. By inspecting the time evolution of the photon mode occupations, we show that if multiple lasing peaks are observed in time-integrated mode occupations, the reason can be either bi-modal lasing or temporal switching between several modes. The former takes place within a narrow range of parameters while the latter occurs more widely. We find that the origin of the temporal switching is different in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. At weak coupling slope efficien…
Topological concepts have been applied to a wide range of fields in order to successfully describe the emergence of robust edge modes that are unaffected by scattering or disorder. In photonics, indications of lasing from topologically protected modes with improved overall laser characteristics were observed. Here, we study exciton-polariton microcavity traps that are arranged in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice and form a topological defect mode from which we unequivocally observe highly coherent polariton lasing. Additionally, we confirm the excitonic contribution to the polari…
Unlike conventional lasers, diffusive random lasers (DRLs) have no resonator to trap light and no high-Q resonances to support lasing. Due to this lack of sharp resonances the DRL has presented a challenge to conventional laser theory. We present a theory able to treat the DRL rigorously, and provide results on the lasing spectra, internal fields and output intensities of DRLs. Typically DRLs are highly multimode lasers, emitting light at a number of wavelengths. We show that the modal interactions through the gain medium in such lasers are extremely strong and lead to a uniformly spaced frequ…
We report the spectral characteristics of fully chaotic and non-chaotic microcavity lasers under continuous-wave operating conditions. It is found that fully chaotic microcavity lasers operate in single mode, whereas non-chaotic microcavity lasers operate in multimode. The suppression of multimode lasing for fully chaotic microcavity lasers is explained by large spatial overlaps of the resonance wave functions that spread throughout the two-dimensional cavity due to the ergodicity of chaotic ray orbits.
