This paper investigates the recently introduced data-driven correction reduced order model (DDC-ROM) in the numerical simulation of the quasi-geostrophic equations. The DDC-ROM uses available data to model the correction term that is generally used to represent the missing information in low-dimensional ROMs. Physical constraints are added to the DDC-ROM to create the constrained data-driven correction reduced order model (CDDC-ROM) in order to further improve its accuracy and stability. Finally, the DDC-ROM is tested on time intervals that are longer than the time interval over which it was trained. The numerical investigation shows that, for low-dimensional ROMs, both the DDC-ROM and CDDC-ROM perform better than the standard Galerkin ROM (G-ROM) and the CDDC-ROM provides the best results.
We use the more intuitive approach due to Kolmogorov (and subsequently, Landau in his text on fluid dynamics) to calculate some third-order structure functions for quasi-geostrophic turbulence for the forward cascade of pseudo-potential enstrophy and the inverse energy cascade in quasi-geostrophic turbulence.
We use contour dynamics to derive equations of motion for infinite planar surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts, and show that it leads to the same result as a regularization procedure introduced previously by Hunter and Shu (2018).
In this paper, the averaging principle for quasi-geostrophic motions with rapidly oscillating forcing is proved, both on finite but large time intervals and on the entire time axis. This includes comparison estimate, stability estimate, and convergence result between quasi-geostrophic motions and its averaged motions. Furthermore, the existence of almost periodic quasi-geostrophic motions and attractor convergence are also investigated.
In this paper, we shall implement KAM theory in order to construct a large class of time quasi-periodic solutions for an active scalar model arising in fluid dynamics. More precisely, the construction of invariant tori is performed for quasi-geostrophic shallow-water equations when the {\it Rossby deformation length} belongs to a massive Cantor set. As a consequence, we construct pulsating vortex patches whose boundary is localized in a thin annulus for any time.
We consider triadic nonlinear interaction in the Navier-Stokes equation for quasi-geostrophic convection in a spherical shell. This approach helps understanding the origin of kinetic energy transport in the system and the particular scheme of mode interaction, as well as the locality of the energy transfer. The peculiarity of convection in the sphere, concerned with excitation of Rossby waves, is considered. The obtained results are compared with our previous study in Cartesian geometry.
In this paper, we consider a family of piecewise constant solutions of the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equation. We derive the contour dynamics equation of the QGSW front, which is a nonlinear, nonlocal dispersive equation, and prove the global existence of the solutions when the initial data is sufficiently close to a flat front.
We consider a nonlinear, spatially-nonlocal initial value problem in one space dimension on $\mathbb{R}$ that describes the motion of surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts. We prove that the initial value problem has a unique local smooth solution under a convergence condition on the multilinear expansion of the nonlinear term in the equation, and, for sufficiently smooth and small initial data, we prove that the solution is global.
Starting from the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations, we derive a time-averaged `hydrostatic wave equation' that describes the propagation of inertia-gravity internal waves through quasi-geostrophic flow. The derivation uses a multiple-time-scale asymptotic method to isolate wave field evolution over intervals much longer than a wave period, assumes that the wave field has a well-defined and non-inertial frequency such as that of the mid-latitude semi-diurnal lunar tide, neglects nonlinear wave-wave interactions and makes no restriction on either the background density stratification or the rela…
We revisit the discussion of the energetics of quasi-geostrophic flows from a geometric perspective based on the introduction of an effective metric, built in terms of the flow stratification and the Coriolis parameter. In particular, an appropriate notion of normal modes is defined through a spectral geometry problem in the ocean basin (a compact manifold with boundary) for the associated Laplace-Beltrami scalar operator. This spectral problem can be used to systematically encode non-local aspects of stratification and topography. As examples of applications we revisit the isotropy assumption…
Charney and DeVore [J. Atmos. Sci. 36 (1979), 1205-1216] found multiple equilibrium states as a consequence of bottom topography in their pioneering work on the quasi-geostrophic barotropic flow over topography in a $β$-plane channel. In the present paper, we prove that the basic flow is asymptotically stable in a parameter region, including the flat topography situation, which excludes the existence of multiple equilibrium states therein. Moreover, we show that an additional condition on the average zonal force or the average zonal velocity is indispensable to the well-posedness of the Charne…
Fast changes of Earth's magnetic field could be explained by inviscid and diffusion-less quasi-geostrophic (QG) Magneto-Coriolis modes. We present a hybrid QG model with columnar flows and three-dimensional magnetic fields and find modes with periods of a few years at parameters relevant to Earth's core. For the simple poloidal magnetic field that we consider here they show a localization of kinetic and magnetic energy in the equatorial region. This concentration of energy near the equator and the high frequency make them a plausible mechanism to explain similar features observed in recent geo…
Quasi-geostrophic (QG) theory describes the dynamics of synoptic scale flows in the trophosphere that are balanced with respect to both acoustic and internal gravity waves. Within this framework, effects of (turbulent) friction near the ground are usually represented by Ekman Layer theory. The troposphere covers roughly the lowest ten kilometers of the atmosphere while Ekman layer heights are typically just a few hundred meters. However, this two-layer asymptotic theory does not explicitly account for substantial changes of the potential temperature stratification due to diabatic heating assoc…
We derive statistical equilibrium solutions of the truncated inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations, and verify the validity of these solutions at late times in numerical simulations of the truncated SQG equations. The results indicate enstrophy thermalizes while energy can condense at the gravest modes, in agreement with previous indications of a direct cascade of enstrophy and an inverse cascade of energy in forced-dissipative SQG systems. At early times, the truncated inviscid SQG simulations show a behavior reminiscent of forced-dissipative SQG turbulence, and we identify spect…
In this study we give a characterization of semi-geostrophic turbulence by performing freely decaying simulations for the case of constant uniform potential vorticity, a set of equations known as surface semi-geostrophic approximation. The equations are formulated as conservation laws for potential temperature and potential vorticity, with a nonlinear Monge-Ampére type inversion equation for the streamfunction, expressed in a transformed coordinate system that follows the geostrophic flow. We perform model studies of turbulent surface semi-geostrophic flows in a doubly-periodic domain in the h…

Modeling the subgrid-scale dynamics of reduced models is a long standing open problem that finds application in ocean, atmosphere and climate predictions where direct numerical simulation (DNS) is impossible. While neural networks (NNs) have already been applied to a range of three-dimensional flows with success, two dimensional flows are more challenging because of the backscatter of energy from small to large scales. We show that learning a model jointly with the dynamical solver and a meaningful \textit{a posteriori}-based loss function lead to stable and realistic simulations when applied …
The derivation of a quasi-geostrophic (QG) system from the rotating shallow water equations on a midlatitude beta-plane coupled with moisture is presented. Condensation is prescribed to occur whenever the moisture at a point exceeds a prescribed saturation value. It is seen that a slow condensation time scale is required to obtain a consistent set of equations at leading order. Further, since the advecting wind fields are geostrophic, changes in moisture (and hence, precipitation) occur only via non-divergent mechanisms. Following observations, a saturation profile with gradients in the zonal …
We present a new pseudo-spectral open-source code nicknamed pizza. It is dedicated to the study of rapidly-rotating Boussinesq convection under the 2-D spherical quasi-geostrophic approximation, a physical hypothesis that is appropriate to model the turbulent convection that develops in planetary interiors. The code uses a Fourier decomposition in the azimuthal direction and supports both a Chebyshev collocation method and a sparse Chebyshev integration formulation in the cylindrically-radial direction. It supports several temporal discretisation schemes encompassing multi-step time steppers a…
