This paper is concerned with the polariton resonances and their application for cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance (CALR) for the elastic system within the finite frequency regime beyond the quasi-static approximation. We first derive the complete spectral system of the Neumann-Poincaré operator associated with the elastic system within the finite frequency regime. Based on the obtained spectral results, we construct a broad class of elastic configurations that can induce polariton resonances beyond the quasi-static limit. As an application, the invisibility cloaking effect is achieved through constructing a class of core-shell-matrix metamaterial structures provided the source is located inside a critical radius. Moreover, if the source is located outside the critical radius, it is proved that there is no resonance.
This paper concerns with a family of elliptic systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, arising in the theory of homogenization. We establish uniform optimal regularity estimates for solutions of Neumann problems in a bounded Lipschitz domain with $L^2$ boundary data. The proof relies on a boundary Korn inequality for solutions of systems of linear elasticity and uses a large-scale Rellich estimate obtained in \cite{Shen-2016}.
In this paper, we are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the Neumann-Poincare operator for Helmholtz system. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of spherical Bessel function near the origin and/or approach higher order, we prove the asymptotic behavior of spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator when frequency is small enough and/or the order is large enough. The results show that spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator is continuous at the origin and converges to zero from the complex plane in general.
We prove an equivalence between weighted Poincare inequalities and the existence of weak solutions to a Neumann problem related to a degenerate p- Laplacian. The Poincare inequalities are formulated in the context of degenerate Sobolev spaces defined in terms of a quadratic form, and the associated matrix is the source of the degeneracy in the p-Laplacian.
We consider the Neumann--Poincaré operator on a planar domain enclosed by two touching circular boundaries. This domain, which is a crescent-shaped domain or touching disks, has a cusp at the touching point of two circles. We analyze the operator via the Fourier transform on the boundary circles of the domain. In particular, we define a Hilbert space on which the operator is bounded, self-adjoint. We then obtain the complete spectral resolution of the Neumann--Poincaré operator. On both the crescent-shaped domain and touching disks, the Neumann--Poincaré operator has only absolutely continuous…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the spectral nature of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on the intersecting disks, which is a domain with the Lipschitz boundary. The complete spectral resolution of the operator is derived, which shows in particular that it admits only the absolutely continuous spectrum, no singularly continuous spectrum and no pure point spectrum. We then quantitatively analyze using the spectral resolution the plasmon resonance at the absolutely continuous spectrum.
The Neumann-Poincaré operator, a singular integral operator on the boundary of a domain, naturally appears when one solves a conductivity transmission problem via the boundary integral formulation. Recently, a series expression of the Neumann-Poincaré operator was developed in two dimensions based on geometric function theory. In this paper, we investigate geometric properties of composite materials by using this series expansion. In particular, we obtain explicit formulas for the polarization tensor and the effective conductivity for an inclusion or a periodic array of inclusions of arbitrary…
We consider a linearized inverse boundary value problem for the elasticity system. From the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at zero frequency, we show that a transversely isotropic perturbation of a homogeneous isotropic elastic tensor can be uniquely determined. From the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at two distinct positive frequencies, we show that a transversely isotropic perturbation of a homogeneous isotropic density can be identified at the same time.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of determining the Lamé moduli of an isotropic, static elasticity equations of system at the boundary from the localized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Assuming appropriate local regularity assumptions as weak as possible on the Lamé moduli and on the boundary, we give explicit pointwise reconstruction formulae of the Lamé moduli and their higher order derivatives at the boundary from the localized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.
We study spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners with particular emphasis on existence of continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum. We show that the rate of resonance at continuous spectrum is different from that at eigenvalues, and then derive a method to distinguish continuous spectrum from eigenvalues. We perform computational experiments using the method to see whether continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum appear on domains with corners. For the computations we use a modification of the Nyström method which makes it possible to construct…
We first investigate spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré (NP) operator for the Lamé system of elasto-statics. We show that the elasto-static NP operator can be symmetrized in the same way as that for Laplace operator. We then show that even if elasto-static NP operator is not compact even on smooth domains, its spectrum consists of eigenvalues which accumulates to two numbers determined by Lamé constants. We then derive explicitly eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on disks and ellipses. We then investigate resonance occurring at eigenvalues and anomalous localized resonance at accumulatio…
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of recovering piecewise homogeneous elastic tensor and piecewise homogeneous mass density from a localized lateral Dirichlet-to-Neumann or Neumann-to-Dirichlet map for the elasticity equation in the space-time domain. We derive uniqueness for identifying these tensor and density on all domains of homogeneity that may be reached from the part of the boundary where the measurements are taken by a chain of subdomains whose successive interfaces contain a curved portion.
When perfectly conducting or insulating inclusions are closely located, stress which is the gradient of the solution to the conductivity equation can be arbitrarily large as the distance between two inclusions tends to zero. It is important to precisely characterize the blow-up of the gradient. In this paper we show that the blow-up of the gradient can be characterized by a singular function defined by the single layer potential of an eigenfunction corresponding to the eigenvalue ${1}/{2}$ of a Neumann-Poincaré type operator defined on the boundaries of the inclusions. By comparing the singula…
If a body of dielectric material is coated by a plasmonic structure of negative dielectric constant with nonzero loss parameter, then cloaking by anomalous localized resonance (CALR) may occur as the loss parameter tends to zero. The aim of this paper is to investigate this phenomenon in two and three dimensions when the coated structure is radial, and the core, shell and matrix are isotropic materials. In two dimensions, we show that if the real part of the permittivity of the shell is -1 (under the assumption that the permittivity of the background is 1), then CALR takes place. If it is diff…
We consider well-posedness of the boundary value problem in presence of an inclusion with complex conductivity $k$. We first consider the transmission problem in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and characterize solvability of the problem in terms of the spectrum of the Neumann-Poincaré operator. We then deal with the boundary value problem and show that the solution is bounded in its $H^1$-norm uniformly in $k$ as long as $k$ is at some distance from a closed interval in the negative real axis. We then show with an estimate that the solution depends on $k$ in its $H^1$-norm Lipschitz continuously. We finally s…
In this paper we study spectral estimates of the $p$-Laplace Neumann operator in conformal regular domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^2$. This study is based on (weighted) Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities. The main technical tool is the composition operators theory in relation with the Brennan's conjecture. We prove that if the Brennan's conjecture holds then for any $p\in (4/3,2)$ and $r\in (1,p/(2-p))$ the weighted $(r,p)$-Poincare-Sobolev inequality holds with the constant depending on the conformal geometry of $Ω$. As a consequence we obtain classical Poincare-Sobolev inequalities and spectral estima…
We consider the Neumann-Poincar'e (double layer potential) operator in 3D elasicity on a smooth closed surface. Its essential spectrum consists of 3 points. We find the asymptotics of sequences of eigenvalues converging to these three pounts. They are expressed via the eigenvalue distribution for a matrix eigenvalue problem depending on the points of the cotangent bundle of the surface. For the two-sided asymptotics for the distribution of the the union of sequences of eigenvalues converging to the point of the essential spectrum from both sides, an expression is found via the Euler characteri…
This paper reports some novel and intriguing discoveries about the localization and geometrization phenomenon in plasmon resonances and the intrinsic geometric structures of Neumann-Poincaré eigenfunctions. It is known that plasmon resonance generically occurs in the quasi-static regime where the size of the plasmonic inclusion is sufficiently small compared to the wavelength. In this paper, we show that the global smallness condition on the plasmonic inclusion can be replaced by a local high-curvature condition, and the plasmon resonance occurs locally near the high-curvature point of the pla…
We consider the field concentration for the transmission problems of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous conductivity equations in the presence of closely located circular inclusions. We revisit these well-studied problems by exploiting the spectral nature residing behind the phenomenon of the field concentration. The spectral approach enables us not only to recover the existing results with new insights but also to produce significant new results. We show that when relative conductivities of inclusions have different signs, then the gradient of the solution is bounded regardless of the distance…
We study the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the stationary linear equation of elasticity in a bounded domain in R d , d $\ge$ 2, with smooth boundary. We show that it can be approximated by a pseudodifferential operator on the boundary with a matrix-valued symbol and we compute the principal symbol modulo conjugation by unitary matrices.
In this article, we investigate the spectrum of the Neumann-Poincaré operator associated to a periodic distribution of small inclusions with size $\varepsilon$, and its asymptotic behavior as the parameter $\varepsilon$ vanishes. Combining techniques pertaining to the fields of homogenization and potential theory, we prove that the limit spectrum is composed of the `trivial' eigenvalues $0$ and $1$, and of a subset which stays bounded away from $0$ and $1$ uniformly with respect to $\varepsilon$. This non trivial part is the reunion of the \textit{Bloch spectrum}, accounting for the collective…
We investigate in a quantitative way the plasmon resonance at eigenvalues and the essential spectrum (the accumulation point of eigenvalues) of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on smooth domains. We first extend the symmetrization principle so that the single layer potential becomes a unitary operator from $H^{-1/2}$ onto $H^{1/2}$. We then show that the resonance at the essential spectrum is weaker than that at eigenvalues. It is shown that anomalous localized resonance occurs at the essential spectrum on ellipses, but cloaking does not occur on ellipses unlike the core-shell structure considere…
The Neumann-Poincaré (NP) operator naturally appears in the context of metamaterials as it may be used to represent the solutions of elliptic transmission problems via potentiel theory. In particular, its spectral properties are closely related to the well-posedness of these PDE's, in the typical case where one considers a bounded inclusion of homogeneous plasmonic metamaterial embedded in a homogeneous background dielectric medium. In a recent work, M. Perfekt and M. Putinar have shown that the NP operator of a 2D curvilinear polygon has an essential spectrum, which depends only on the angles…
In the framework of the Laplacian transport, described by a Robin boundary value problem in an exterior domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we generalize the definition of the Poincaré-Steklov operator to $d$-set boundaries, $n-2< d<n$, and give its spectral properties to compare to the spectra of the interior domain and also of a truncated domain, considered as an approximation of the exterior case. The well-posedness of the Robin boundary value problems for the truncated and exterior domains is given in the general framework of $n$-sets. The results are obtained thanks to a generalization of the conti…
We study spectral stability estimates of elliptic operators in divergence form $-\textrm{div} [A(w) \nabla g(w)]$ with the Neumann boundary condition in non-Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset \mathbb C$. The suggested method is based on connections of planar quasiconformal mappings with Sobolev spaces and its applications to the Poincaré inequalities.
We study the eigenvalue problem for the Neumann-Laplace operator in conformal regular planar domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}$. Conformal regular domains support the Poincaré inequality and this allows us to estimate the variation of the eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian upon domain perturbation via energy type integrals. Boundaries of such domains can have any Hausdorff dimension between one and two.
We study weighted porous media equations on domains $Ω\subseteq{\mathbb R}^N$, either with Dirichlet or with Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions when $Ω\not={\mathbb R}^N$. Existence of weak solutions and uniqueness in a suitable class is studied in detail. Moreover, $L^{q_0}$-$L^\varrho$ smoothing effects ($1\leq q_0<\varrho<\infty$) are discussed for short time, in connection with the validity of a Poincaré inequality in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, and the long-time asymptotic behaviour is also studied. Particular emphasis is given to the Neumann problem, which is much less stud…
In this article we obtain estimates of Neumann eigenvalues of $p$-Laplace operators in a large class of space domains satisfying quasihyperbolic boundary conditions. The suggested method is based on composition operators generated by quasiconformal mappings and their applications to Sobolev-Poincaré-inequalities. By using a sharp version of the inverse Hölder inequality we refine our estimates for quasi-balls, that is, images of balls under quasiconformal mappings of the whole space.
In this paper we study spectral properties of the Neumann-Laplace operator in planar quasiconformal regular domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^2$. This study is based on the quasiconformal theory of composition operators on Sobolev spaces. Using the composition operators theory we obtain estimates of constants in Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities and as a consequence lower estimates of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the Neumann-Laplace operator in planar quasiconformal regular domains.
In this paper we obtain estimates for the first nontrivial eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplace Neumann operator in bounded simply connected planar domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^2$. This study is based on a quasiconformal version of the universal weighted Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities obtained in our previous papers for conformal weights. The suggested weights in the present paper are Jacobians of quasiconformal mappings. The main technical tool is the theory of composition operators in relation with the Brennan's Conjecture for (quasi)conformal mappings.
In this paper we study integral estimates of derivatives of conformal mappings $φ:\mathbb D\toΩ$ of the unit disc $\mathbb D\subset\mathbb C$ onto bounded domains $Ω$ that satisfy the Ahlfors condition. These integral estimates lead to estimates of constants in Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities, and by the Rayleigh quotient we obtain spectral estimates of the Neumann-Laplace operator in non-Lipschitz domains (quasidiscs) in terms of the (quasi)conformal geometry of the domains. Specifically, the lower estimates of the first non-trivial eigenvalues of the Neumann-Laplace operator in some fractal ty…

The aim of this paper is to give a mathematical justification of cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance (CALR). We consider the dielectric problem with a source term in a structure with a layer of plasmonic material. Using layer potentials and symmetrization techniques, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the fixed source term for electromagnetic power dissipation to blow up as the loss parameter of the plasmonic material goes to zero. This condition is written in terms of the Newtonian potential of the source term. In the case of concentric disks, we make the condition even…
In this paper we prove discreteness of the spectrum of the Neu\-mann-Lap\-la\-ci\-an (the free membrane problem) in a large class of non-convex space domains. The lower estimates of the first non-trivial eigenvalue are obtained in terms of geometric characteristics of Sobolev mappings. The suggested approach is based on Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities that are obtained with the help of the composition operators theory for uniform Sobolev spaces. These composition operators are induced by a generalizations of conformal mappings that are mappings of bounded $2$-dilatation ($2$-quasiconformal mappi…
In this paper we study existence and spectral properties for weak solutions of Neumann and Dirichlet problems associated to second order linear degenerate elliptic partial differential operators $X$, with rough coefficients of the form $$X=-\text{div}(P\nabla )+{\bf HR}+{\bf S^\prime G} +F$$ in a geometric homogeneous space setting where the $n\times n$ matrix function $P=P(x)$ is allowed to degenerate. We give a maximum principle for weak solutions of $Xu\leq 0$ and follow this with a result describing a relationship between compact projection of the degenerate Sobolev space $QH^{1,p}$ into $…
Consider a three dimensional piecewise homogeneous anisotropic elastic medium $Ω$ which is a bounded domain consisting of a finite number of bounded subdomains $D_α$, with each $D_α$ a homogeneous elastic medium. One typical example is a finite element model with elements with curvilinear interfaces for an ansiotropic elastic medium. Assuming the $D_α$ are known and Lipschitz, we are concerned with the uniqueness in the inverse boundary value problem of identifying the anisotropic elasticity tensor on $Ω$ from a localized Dirichlet to Neumann map given on a part of the boundary $\partial D_{α_…
Following ideas of Caffarelli and Silvestre in~\cite{CS}, and using recent progress in hyperbolic fillings, we define fractional $p$-Laplacians $(-Δ_p)^θ$ with $0<θ<1$ on any compact, doubling metric measure space $(Z,d,ν)$, and prove existence, regularity and stability for the non-homogenous non-local equation $(-Δ_p)^θu =f.$ These results, in turn, rest on the new existence, global Hölder regularity and stability theorems that we prove for the Neumann problem for $p$-Laplacians $Δ_p$, $1<p<\infty$, in bounded domains of measure metric spaces endowed with a doubling measure that supports a Po…
We consider plasmon resonances and cloaking for the elastostatic system in $\mathbb{R}^3$ via the spectral theory of Neumann-Poincaré operator. We first derive the full spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator for the 3D elastostatic system in the spherical geometry. The spectral result is of significant interest for its own sake, and serves as a highly nontrivial extension of the corresponding 2D study in [8]. The derivation of the spectral result in 3D involves much more complicated and subtle calculations and arguments than that for the 2D case. Then we consider a 3D plasmonic s…
We consider a classical shape optimization problem for the eigenvalues of elliptic operators with homogeneous boundary conditions on domains in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. We survey recent results concerning the analytic dependence of the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues upon domain perturbation and the role of balls as critical points of such functions subject to volume constraint. Our discussion concerns Dirichlet and buckling-type problems for polyharmonic operators, the Neumann and the intermediate problems for the biharmonic operator, the Lamé and the Reissner-Mi…
We prove the unitary equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly positive operator, $S\geq εI_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some $ε>0$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ to an abstract buckling problem operator. In the concrete case where $S=\bar{-Δ|_{C_0^\infty(Ω)}}$ in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ for $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ an open, bounded (and sufficiently regular) domain, this recovers, as a particular case of a general result due to G. Grubb, that the eigenvalue problem for the Krein Laplacian $S_K$ (i.e., the K…
In this paper we analyze some properties of a sixth order elliptic operator arising in the framework of the strain gradient linear elasticity theory for nanoplates in flexural deformation. We first rigorously deduce the weak formulation of the underlying Neumann problem as well as its well posedness. Under some suitable smoothness assumptions on the coefficients and on the geometry we derive interior and boundary regularity estimates for the solution of the Neumann problem. Finally, for the case of isotropic materials, we obtain new Strong Unique Continuation results in the interior, in the fo…
This paper is devoted to studying impedance eigenvalues (that is, eigenvalues of a particular Dirichlet-to-Neumann map) for the time harmonic linear elastic wave problem, and their potential use as target-signatures for fluid-solid interaction problems. We first consider several possible families of eigenvalues of the elasticity problem, focusing on certain impedance eigenvalues that are an analogue of Steklov eigenvalues. We show that one of these families arises naturally in inverse scattering. We also analyse their approximation from far field measurements of the scattered pressure field in…
This paper addresses the well posedness of a dynamical model of perfect plasticity with mixed boundary conditions for general closed and convex elasticity sets. The proof relies on an asymptotic analysis of the solution of a perfect plasticity model with relaxed dissipative boundary conditions obtained in [7]. One of the main issues consists in extending the measure theoretic duality pairing between stresses and plastic strains, as well as a convexity inequality to a more general context where deviatoric stresses are not necessarily bounded. Complete answers are given in the pure Dirichlet and…
We give some theoretical as well as computational results on Laplace and Maxwell constants. Besides the classical de Rham complex we investigate the complex of elasticity and the complex related to the biharmonic equation and general relativity as well using the general functional analytical concept of Hilbert complexes. We consider mixed boundary conditions and bounded Lipschitz domains of arbitrary topology. Our numerical aspects are presented by examples for the de Rham complex in 2D and 3D which not only confirm our theoretical findings but also indicate some interesting conjectures.
We revisit a construction principle of Fredholm operators using Hilbert complexes of densely defined, closed linear operators and apply this to particular choices of differential operators. The resulting index is then computed with the help of explicitly describing the dimension of the cohomology groups of generalised (`harmonic') Dirichlet and Neumann tensor fields. The main results of this contribution are the computation of the indices of Dirac-type operators associated to the elasticity complex and the newly found biharmonic complex, relevant for the biharmonic equation, elasticity, and fo…
It is known that the Neumann--Poincaré operator for the Lamé system of linear elasticity is polynomially compact and, as a consequence, that its spectrum consists of three non-empty sequences of eigenvalues accumulating to certain numbers determined by Lamé parameters, if the boundary of the domain where the operator is defined is $C^\infty$-smooth. We extend this result to less smooth boundaries, namely, $C^{1, α}$-smooth boundaries for some $α> 0$. The results are obtained by proving certain identities for surface Riesz transforms, which are singular integral operators of nonconvolution type…
This paper is concerned with the analysis of surface polariton resonance for nanoparticles in linear elasticity. With the presence of nanoparticles, we first derive the perturbed displacement field associated to a given elastic source field. It is shown that the leading-order term of the perturbed elastic wave field is determined by the Neumann-Poincáre operator associated to the Lamé system. By analyzing the spectral properties of the aforesaid Neumann-Poincáre operator, we study the polariton resonance for the elastic system. The results may find applications in elastic wave imaging.
We consider the biharmonic operator subject to homogeneous boundary conditions of Neumann type on a planar dumbbell domain which consists of two disjoint domains connected by a thin channel. We analyse the spectral behaviour of the operator, characterizing the limit of the eigenvalues and of the eigenprojections as the thickness of the channel goes to zero. In applications to linear elasticity, the fourth order operator under consideration is related to the deformation of a free elastic plate, a part of which shrinks to a segment. In contrast to what happens with the classical second order cas…
In 1961 G.Polya published a paper about the eigenvalues of vibrating membrane. The "free vibrating membrane"' corresponds to the Neumann-Laplace operator in bounded plane domains. In this paper we obtain estimates for the first eigenvalue of this operator in a large class of domains that we call as conformal regular domains, that includes convex domains, John domains etc... On the base of our estimates we conjecture that the eigenvalues of the Neumann-Laplace operator depend on the hyperbolic metrics of plane domains. We propose a new method for the estimates that is based on weighted Poincaré…
In this paper, the elastic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Ξ_g$ is studied for the stationary elasticity system in a compact Riemannian manifold $(Ω,g)$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω$. By overcoming methodological difficulties, we explicitly get matrix-valued full symbol for the elastic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Ξ_g$. We prove that for a strong convex or extendable real-analytic manifold with boundary, the elastic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Ξ_g$ uniquely determines the metric $g$ of $Ω$ in the sense of isometry, thereby solving an open problem for the uniqueness of the metric under real-analytic s…
