Accreting neutron stars are one of the main targets for continuous gravitational wave searches, as asymmetric accretion may lead to quadrupolar deformations, or `mountains', on the crust of the star, which source gravitational wave emission at twice the rotation frequency. The gravitational wave torque may also impact on the spin evolution of the star, possibly dictating the currently observed spin periods of neutron stars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries and leading to the increased spindown rate observed during accretion in PSR J1023+0038. Previous studies have shown that deformed reaction layers in the crust of the neutron star lead to thermal and compositional gradients that can lead to gravitational wave emission. However, there are no realistic constraints on the level of asymmetry that is expected. In this paper we consider a natural source of asymmetry, namely the magnetic field, and calculate the density and pressure perturbations that are expected in the crust of accreting neutron stars. In general we find that only the outermost reaction layers of the neutron star are strongly perturbed. The mass quadrupole that we estimate is generally small and cannot explain the increase of spin-down rate of PSR J1023+0038. However, if strong shallow heating sources are present at low densities in the crust, as cooling observations suggest, these layers will be strongly perturbed and the resulting quadrupole could explain the observed spindown of PSR J1023+0038, and lead to observable gravitational wave signals from systems with higher accretion rates.
We study the influence of magnetised crusts on torsional shear mode oscillations of magnetars. In this context, we employ magnetised crusts whose ground state properties are affected by Landau quantisation of electrons. The shear modulus of magnetised crusts is enhanced in strong magnetic fields $\geq 10^{17}$ G. Though we do not find any appreciable change in frequencies of fundamental torsional shear modes, frequencies of first overtones are significantly affected in strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, frequencies of torsional shear modes calculated with magnetised crusts are in good agreem…
We consider the dynamics of a mechanical failure induced by a shear stress in a strongly magnetized neutron-star crust. We show that even if the elastic properties of the crust allow the creation of a shear crack, the strongly sheared magnetic field around the crack leads to a back-reaction from the Lorentz force which does not allow large relative displacement of the crack surfaces. Instead, the global evolution of the crack proceeds on a slow resistive time scale, and is unable to release any substantial mechanical energy. Our calculations demostrate that for {\it some} magnetic-field config…
The elastic crust of a neutron star fractures repeatedly as it spins down electromagnetically. An idealised, macroscopic model of inhomogeneous crustal failure is presented based on a cellular automaton with nearest-neighbour tectonic interactions involving strain redistribution and thermal dissipation. Predictions are made of the size and waiting-time distributions of failure events, as well as the rate of failure as the star spins down. The last failure event typically occurs when the star spins down to approximately 1% of its birth frequency with implications for rotational glitch activity.…
Although crystallized neutron star crust is responsible for many fascinating observational phenomena, its actual microscopic structure in tremendous gravitational and magnetic fields is not understood. Here we show that in a non-uniform magnetic field, three-dimensional ionic Coulomb crystals comprising the crust may stretch or shrink while their electrostatic pressure becomes anisotropic. The pressure depends non-linearly on the magnitude of the stretch, so that a continuous magnetic field evolution may result in an abrupt crystal elongation or contraction. This may provide a trigger for magn…
We report on the effects of strong magnetic fields on neutrino emission in the modified Urca process. We show that the effect of Landau levels on the various Urca pairs affects the neutrino emission spectrum and leads to an angular asymmetry in the neutrino emission. For low magnetic fields the Landau levels have almost no effect on the cooling. However, as the field strength increases, the electron chemical potential increases resulting in a lower density at which Urca pairs can exist. For intermediate field strength there is an interesting interference between the Landau level distribution a…
Mountains on rapidly rotating neutron stars efficiently radiate gravitational waves. The maximum possible size of these mountains depends on the breaking strain of neutron star crust. With multi-million ion molecular dynamics simulations of Coulomb solids representing the crust, we show that the breaking strain of pure single crystals is very large and that impurities, defects, and grain boundaries only modestly reduce the breaking strain to around 0.1. Due to the collective behavior of the ions during failure found in our simulations, the neutron star crust is likely very strong and can suppo…
We study the effects of high magnetic fields on the structure and on the geometry of the crust in neutron stars. We find that the crust geometry is substantially modified by the magnetic field inside the star. We build stationary and axis-symmetric magnetized stellar models by using well-known equations of state to describe the neutron star crust, namely the Skyrme model (Sky) for the inner crust and the Baym, Pethick, and Sutherland (BPS) equation of state for the outer crust. We show that the magnetic field has a dual role, contributing to the crust deformation via the electromagnetic intera…

The equilibrium properties of the outer crust of cold nonaccreting magnetars (i.e. neutron stars endowed with very strong magnetic fields) are studied using the latest experimental atomic mass data complemented with a microscopic atomic mass model based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. The Landau quantization of electron motion caused by the strong magnetic field is found to have a significant impact on the composition and the equation of state of crustal matter. It is also shown that the outer crust of magnetars could be much more massive than that of ordinary neutron stars.
As evidenced by the coincident detections of GW170817 and GRB 170817A, short gamma-ray bursts are likely associated with neutron star-neutron star merger events. Although rare, some bursts display episodes of early emission, with precursor flares being observed up to $\sim 10$ seconds prior to the main burst. As the stars inspiral due to gravitational wave emission, the exertion of mutual tidal forces leads to the excitation of stellar oscillation modes, which may come into resonance with the orbital motion. Mode amplitudes increase substantially during a period of resonance as tidal energy is…
This study investigates elastic deformation driven by the Hall drift in a magnetized neutron-star crust. Although the dynamic equilibrium initially holds without elastic displacement, the magnetic-field evolution changes the Lorentz force over a secular timescale, which inevitably causes the elastic deformation to settle in a new force balance. Accordingly, elastic energy is accumulated, and the crust is eventually fractured beyond a particular threshold. We assume that the magnetic field is axially symmetric, and we explicitly calculate the breakup time, maximum elastic energy stored in the c…
The coefficients that determine the electron heat transfer and diffusion in the crust of neutron stars are calculated on the basis of a solution of the Boltzmann equation with allowance for degeneracy.
Following an extremely interesting idea \cite{R1}, published long ago, the work function at the outer crust region of a strongly magnetized neutron star is obtained using relativistic version of Thomas-Fermi type model. In the present scenario, the work function becomes anisotropic; the longitudinal part is an increasing function of magnetic field strength, whereas the transverse part diverges. An approximate estimate of the electron density in the magnetosphere due to field emission and photo emission current, from the polar cap region are obtained.
We study electrical and thermal conductivities of degenerate electrons emitting and absorbing phonons in a strongly magnetized crystalline neutron star crust. We take into account modification of the phonon spectrum of a Coulomb solid of ions caused by a strong magnetic field. Boltzmann transport equation is solved using a generalized variational method. The ensuing three-dimensional integrals over the transferred momenta are evaluated by two different numerical techniques, the Monte-Carlo method and a regular integration over the first Brillouin zone. The results of the two numerical approach…
Three-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are performed to investigate how a magnetically confined mountain on an accreting neutron star relaxes resistively. No evidence is found for non-ideal MHD instabilities on a short time-scale, such as the resistive ballooning mode or the tearing mode. Instead, the mountain relaxes gradually as matter is transported across magnetic surfaces on the diffusion time-scale, which evaluates to $τ_\mathrm{I} \sim 10^5 - 10^8$ yr (depending on the conductivity of the neutron star crust) for an accreted mass of $M_a = 1.2 \times 10^{-4} M_…
Periodic changes in a thermal soft X-ray flux of a rotating neutron star indicate a non-uniform distribution of the surface temperature. A possible cause of this phenomenon is a suppression of the heat flux across the magnetic field lines in a crust and an envelope of magnetized neutron stars. In this paper we study three-dimensional effects, associated with non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in neutron stars. We calculate the surface temperature distribution by solving numerically a three dimensional heat transfer equation in a magnetized neutron star crust. We adopt an anisotropic (tensorial) …
We give an improved estimate of the detectability of gravitational waves from magnetically confined mountains on accreting neutron stars. The improved estimate includes the following effects for the first time: three-dimensional hydromagnetic ("fast") relaxation, three-dimensional resistive ("slow") relaxation, realistic accreted masses $M_a \la 2 \times 10^{-3} M_\odot$, (where the mountain is grown ab initio by injection), and verification of the curvature rescaling transformation employed in previous work. Typically, a mountain does not relax appreciably over the lifetime of a low-mass X-ra…

In this work we explore the evolution of magnetic fields inside strongly magnetized neutron stars in axisymmetry. We model numerically the coupled field evolution in the core and the crust. Our code models the Hall drift and Ohmic effects in the crust, the back-reaction on the field from magnetically-induced elastic deformation of the crust, the magnetic twist exchange between the crust and the core, and the drift of superconducting flux tubes inside the core. The correct hydromagnetic equilibrium is enforced in the core. We find that i) The Hall attractor found by Gourgouliatos and Cumming in…
The Vlasov equation is used to determine the dispersion relation for the eigenmodes of magnetized nuclear and neutral stellar matter, taking into account the anomalous magnetic moment of nucleons. The formalism is applied to the determination of the dynamical spinodal section, a quantity that gives a good estimation of the crust-core transition in neutron stars. We study the effect of strong magnetic fields, of the order of $10^{15}-10^{17}$ G, on the extension of the crust of magnetized neutron stars. The dynamical instability region of neutron-proton-electron ($npe$) matter at subsaturation …
With the remarkable advent of gravitational-wave astronomy, we have shed light on previously shrouded events: compact binary coalescences. Neutron stars are promising (and confirmed) sources of gravitational radiation and it proves timely to consider the ways in which these stars can be deformed. Gravitational waves provide a unique window through which to examine neutron-star interiors and learn more about the equation of state of ultra-dense nuclear matter. In this work, we study two relevant scenarios for gravitational-wave emission: neutron stars that host (non-axially symmetric) mountains…

Magnetar activity is generated by shear motions of the neutron star surface, which relieve internal magnetic stresses. An analogy with earthquakes and faults is problematic, as the crust is permeated by strong magnetic fields, which greatly constrain crustal displacements. We describe a new deformation mechanism that is specific to strongly magnetized neutron stars. The magnetically stressed crust begins to move because of a thermoplastic instability, which launches a wave that shears the crust and burns its magnetic energy. The propagating wave front resembles the deflagration front in combus…
Rapidly rotating Neutron Stars (NSs) in Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) are thought to be interesting sources of Gravitational Waves (GWs) for current and next generation ground based detectors, such as Advanced LIGO and the Einstein Telescope. The main reason is that many of the NS in these systems appear to be spinning well below their Keplerian breakup frequency, and it has been suggested that torques associated with GW emission may be setting the observed spin period. This assumption has been used extensively in the literature to assess the strength of the likely gravitational wave signal.…
We investigate non-axisymmetric low frequency modes of a rotating and magnetized neutron star, assuming that the star is threaded by a dipole magnetic field whose strength at the stellar surface, $B_0$, is less than $\sim 10^{12}$G, and whose magnetic axis is aligned with the rotation axis. For modal analysis, we use a neutron star model composed of a fluid ocean, a solid crust, and a fluid core, where we treat the core as being non-magnetic assuming that the magnetic pressure is much smaller than the gas pressure in the core. Here, we are interested in low frequency modes of a rotating and ma…
We investigate new solutions for magnetized neutron stars with a barotropic core in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium and a magneto-elastic crust, which was neglected by previous studies concerning stars in MHD equilibrium. The Lorentz force of the barotropic star is purely irrotational and the structures of magnetic fields are constrained. By contrast, a solenoidal component of the Lorentz force exists in the elastic crust and the structures of the magnetic fields are less restricted. We find that the minor solenoidal component in the elastic crust is important for sustaining the strong m…
We examine the equilibrium of a magnetized neutron-star-crust. We calculate axially symmetric models in which an elastic force balances solenoidal motion driven by a Lorentz force. A large variety of equilibrium models are allowed by incorporating the elastic shear deformation; in addition, toroidal-magnetic-field dominated models are available. These results remarkably differ from those in barotropic fluid stars. We demonstrate some models wherein the magnetic energy exceeds the elastic energy. The excess comes from the fact that a large amount of magnetic energy is associated with the irrota…

The dynamics of magnetic field decay with Hall drift is investigated. Assuming that axisymmetric magnetic fields are located in a spherical crust with uniform conductivity and electron number density, long-term evolution is calculated up to Ohmic dissipation. The nonlinear coupling between poloidal and toroidal components is explored in terms of their energies and helicity. Nonlinear oscillation by the drift in strongly magnetized regimes is clear only around the equipartition between two components. Significant energy is transferred to the poloidal component when the toroidal component initia…
Charged particles at the crust of compact stars may be ejected and accelerated by the electric field generated due to the rotation of the magnetized star. For neutron or hybrid stars, the negatively charged particles are usually electrons, and the positively charged particles are mainly protons and Iron. Whereas the existence of strange stars also includes the possibility of ejection of strangelets from the star surface. The flux of such strangelets emitted from all known pulsars is in the range of $10^9-10^{10}$ GeV. Therefore, such massive strangelets can be one of the candidates for the sou…
We have studied the various properties of magnetically deformed atoms, replaced by deformed Wigner-Seitz cells, at the outer crust region of strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) using a relativistic version of Thomas-Fermi model in cylindrical coordinates.
The dissipation of intense crustal electric currents produces high Joule heating rates in cooling neutron stars. Here it is shown that Joule heating can counterbalance fast cooling, making it difficult to infer the presence of hyperons (which accelerate cooling) from measurements of the observed thermal luminosity $L_γ$. Models with and without hyperon cores match $L_γ$ of young magnetars (with poloidal-dipolar field $B_{\textrm{dip}} \gtrsim 10^{14}$ G at the polar surface and $L_γ \gtrsim 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $t \lesssim 10^5$ yr) as well as mature, moderately magnetized stars (with $B_{…
We consider the structure of the magnetic fields inside the neutron stars in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity. In order to construct the magnetic fields, we derive the relativistic Grad-Shafranov equation in EiBI, and numerically determine the magnetic distribution in such a way that the interior magnetic fields should be connected to the exterior distribution. Then, we find that the magnetic distribution inside the neutron stars in EiBI is qualitatively similar to that in general relativity, where the deviation of magnetic distribution in EiBI from that in general relativity is a…
With the first detections of binary neutron star mergers by gravitational-wave detectors, it proves timely to consider how the internal structure of neutron stars affects the way in which they can be asymmetrically deformed. Such deformations may leave measurable imprints on gravitational-wave signals and can be sourced through tidal interactions or the formation of mountains. We detail the formalism that describes fully-relativistic neutron star models with elastic crusts undergoing static perturbations. This formalism primes the problem for studies into a variety of mechanisms that can defor…

The amplification of magnetic fields plays an important role in explaining numerous astrophysical phenomena associated with binary neutron-star mergers, such as mass ejection and the powering of short gamma-ray bursts. Magnetic fields in isolated neutron stars are often assumed to be confined to a small region near the stellar surface, while they are normally taken to fill the whole stars in the numerical modelling. By performing high-resolution, global, and high-order general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations we investigate the impact of a purely crustal magnetic field and contrast…
We present a brief, observational review about the study of the cooling behaviour of accretion-heated neutron stars and the inferences about the neutron-star crust and core that have been obtained from these studies. Accretion of matter during outbursts can heat the crust out of thermal equilibrium with the core and after the accretion episodes are over, the crust will cool down until crust-core equilibrium is restored. We discuss the observed properties of the crust cooling sources and what has been learned about the physics of neutron-star crusts. We also briefly discuss those systems that h…
The quasiperiodic oscillations found in the three giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters observed to date have been interpreted as crustal oscillations caused by a starquake following a dramatic rearrangement of the stellar magnetic field. Motivated by these observations, we study the influence of the magnetic field geometry in the frequencies of the torsional oscillations of magnetized neutron stars. We use realistic tabulated equations of state for the core and crust of the stars and model their magnetic field as a dipole plus a toroidal component, using the relativistic Grad-Shafranov equ…
We present a simple model for electron transport in a possible layer of exotic nuclear clusters (in the so called nuclear pasta layer) between the crust and liquid core of a strongly magnetized neutron star. The electron transport there can be strongly anisotropic and gyrotropic. The anisotropy is produced by different electron effective collision frequencies along and across local symmetry axis in domains of exotic ordered nuclear clusters and by complicated effects of the magnetic field. We also calculate averaged kinetic coefficients in case local domains are freely oriented. Possible appli…
We show that the fundamental seismic shear mode, observed as a quasi-periodic oscillation in giant flares emitted by highly-magnetized neutron stars, is particularly sensitive to the nuclear physics of the crust. The identification of an oscillation at ~ 30 Hz as the fundamental crustal shear mode requires a nuclear symmetry energy that depends very weakly on density near saturation. If the nuclear symmetry energy varies more strongly with density, then lower frequency oscillations, previously identified as torsional Alfven modes of the fluid core, could instead be associated with the crust. I…
We calculate for the first time the phonon excitation rate in the outer crust of a neutron star due to scattering from light dark matter (LDM) particles gravitationally boosted into the star. We consider dark matter particles in the sub-GeV mass range scattering off a periodic array of nuclei through an effective scalar-vector interaction with nucleons. We find that LDM effects cause a modification of the net number of phonons in the lattice as compared to the standard thermal result. In addition, we estimate the contribution of LDM to the ion-ion thermal conductivity in the outer crust and fi…
Neutron star models with maximum mass close to $2 \ M_{\odot}$ reach high central densities, which may activate nucleonic and hyperon direct Urca neutrino emission. To alleviate the tension between fast theoretical cooling rates and thermal luminosity observations of moderately magnetized, isolated thermally-emitting stars (with $L_γ \gtrsim 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $t \gtrsim 10^{5.3}$ yr), some internal heating source is required. The power supplied by the internal heater is estimated for both a phenomenological source in the inner crust and Joule heating due to magnetic field decay, assumin…
We present magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations of the late post-supernova hypercritical accretion to understand its effect on the magnetic field of the new-born neutron star. We consider as an example the case of a magnetic field loop protruding from the star's surface. The accreting matter is assumed to be non magnetized and, due to the high accretion rate, matter pressure dominates over magnetic pressure. We find that an accretion envelope develops very rapidly and once it becomes convectively stable the magnetic field is easily buried and pushed into the newly forming neutron star cru…
