Nonlinear wavefront control is a crucial requirement in realizing nonlinear optical applications with metasurfaces. Numerous aspects of nonlinear frequency conversion and wavefront control have been demonstrated for plasmonic metasurfaces. However, several disadvantages limit their applicability in nonlinear nanophotonics, including high dissipative loss and low optical damage threshold. In contrast, it has been shown that metasurfaces made of high-index dielectrics can provide strong nonlinear responses. Regardless of the recent progress in nonlinear optical processes using all-dielectric nanostructures and metasurfaces, much less advancement has been made in realizing a full wavefront control directly with the generation process. Here, we demonstrate the nonlinear wavefront control for the third-harmonic generation with a silicon metasurface. We use a Pancharatnam-Berry phase approach to encode phase gradients and holographic images on nanostructured silicon metasurfaces. We experimentally demonstrate the polarization-dependent wavefront control and the reconstruction of an encoded hologram at the third-harmonic wavelength with high fidelity. Further, we show that holographic multiplexing is possible by utilizing the polarization states of the third harmonic generation. Our approach eases design and fabrication processes and paves the way to an easy to use toolbox for nonlinear optical wavefront control with all-dielectric metasurfaces.
The angular response of thin diffractive optical elements is highly correlated. For example, the angles of incidence and diffraction of a grating are locked through the grating momentum determined by the grating period. Other diffractive devices, including conventional metasurfaces, have a similar angular behavior due to the fixed locations of the Fresnel zone boundaries and the weak angular sensitivity of the meta-atoms. To alter this fundamental property, we introduce angle-multiplexed metasurfaces, composed of reflective high-contrast dielectric U-shaped meta-atoms, whose response under ill…

In the reported method, a reference optical wave is made by deflection and spatial filtering through a volume Bragg grating. This design has several advantages including simplicity, stability and robustness against misalignment.
We demonstrate reconfigurable phase-only computer-generated metasurface holograms with one, two, or three image planes operating in the visible regime on a stretchable polydimethylsiloxane substrate. Stretching the substrate enlarges the hologram image and changes the location of the image plane. Upon stretching, these devices can switch the displayed holographic image between multiple distinct images. This work opens up the possibilities for stretchable metasurface holograms as flat devices for dynamically reconfigurable optical communication and display. It also confirms that metasurfaces on…

We propose a new class of computer generated holograms whose far fields possess designer-specified polarization response. We dub these Jones matrix holograms. We provide a simple procedure for their implementation using form-birefringent metasurfaces. Jones matrix holography generalizes a wide body of past work with a consistent mathematical framework, particularly in the field of metasurfaces, and suggests previously unrealized devices, examples of which are demonstrated here. In particular, we demonstrate holograms whose far-fields implement parallel polarization analysis and custom waveplat…
Surface topology measurements of micro- or nanostructures is essential for both scientific and industrial applications. However, high-throughput measurements remain challenging in surface metrology. We present a single-shot full-field surface topography measurement using Kramers-Kronig holographic imaging and spectral multiplexing. Three different intensity images at different incident angles were simultaneously measured with three different colors, from which a quantitative phase image was retrieved using spatial Kramers-Kronig relations. A high-resolution topographic image of the sample was …
Holography has emerged as a vital approach to fully engineer the wavefronts of light since its invention dating back to the last century. However, the typically large pixel size, small field of view and limited space-bandwidth impose limitations in the on-demand high-performance applications, especially for three-dimensional displays and large-capacity data storage. Meanwhile, metasurfaces have shown great potential in controlling the propagation of light through the well-tailored scattering behavior of the constituent ultrathin planar elements with a high spatial resolution, making them suita…
Metasurfaces hold great potentials for advanced holographic display with extraordinary information capacity and pixel sizes in an ultrathin flat profile. Dual-polarization channel to encode two independent phase profiles or spatially multiplexed meta-holography by interleaved metasurfaces are captivated popular solutions to projecting multiplexed and vectorial images. However, the intrinsic limit of orthogonal polarization-channels, their crosstalk due to coupling between meta-atoms, and interleaving-induced degradation of efficiency and reconstructed image quality set great barriers for sophi…
Metasurface-generated holography has emerged as a promising route for fully reproducing vivid scenes by manipulating the optical properties of light using ultra-compact devices. However, achieving multiple holographic images using a single metasurface is still difficult due to the capacity limit of a single meta-atom. In this work, we present an inverse design method based on gradient-descent optimization to encode multiple pieces of holographic information into a single metasurface. The proposed method allows the inverse design of single-celled metasurfaces without the need for complex meta-a…
Metasurface holography has the advantage of realizing complex wavefront modulation by thin layers together with the progressive technique of computer-generated holographic imaging. Recently, several approaches showed that virtual objects or any kind of optical information can be generated at a wavelength different from the laser input beam. Here, we demo…

To overcome this challenge, here we demonstrate a tandem residual network approach to efficiently generate multiplexed supercells …
Secret sharing is a well-established cryptographic primitive for storing highly sensitive information like encryption keys for encoded data. It describes the problem of splitting a secret into different shares, without revealing any information about the secret to its shareholders. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical solution for secret sharing based on metasurface holography. In our concept, metasurface holograms are used as spatially separable shares that carry an encrypted message in form of a holographic image. Two of these shares can be recombined by bringing them close together. Light pa…
We present a new holographic concept, named six-pack holography (6PH), in which we compress six off-axis holograms into a single multiplexed off-axis hologram without loss of magnification or resolution. The multiplexed hologram contains straight off-axis fringes with six different orientations, and can be generated optically or digitally. We show that since the six different complex wavefronts do not overlap in the spatial frequency domain, they can be fully reconstructed. 6PH allows more than 50% improvement in the spatial bandwidth consumption when compared to the best multiplexing method p…

However, research endeavors have been mainly devoted to static devices, exploiting only a glimpse of opportunities that metasurfaces can offer. We demonstrate a dynamic met…
Reconstruction of light profiles with amplitude and phase information, called holography, is an attractive optical technique to display three-dimensional images. Large-area metasurfaces composed of discrete wavelength-scale scatterers present an extremely large number of degrees of freedom to engineer an optical element. These degrees of freedom provide tremendous design flexibility, and a central challenge in metasurface design is how to optimally leverage these degrees of freedom towards a desired optical function. Inverse design can be used to explore non-intuitive design space for metasurfaces. We report an inverse design method exploiting T-Matrix scattering of ellipsoidal scatterer based metasurfaces. Nanophotonic platforms such as metasurfaces, achieving arbitrary phase profiles within ultrathin thickness, emerge as miniaturized, ultracompact and kaleidoscopic optical vortex generators. However, it is often required to segment or interleave independent subarray metasurfaces to multiplex optical vortices in a single nano device, which in turn affects the compactness and channel capacity of the device. Here, inspired by phyllotaxis patterns in pine cones and sunflowers, we theoretically prove and experimentally report that multiple optical vortices can be produced in a single compact phyllot…
Hologram is an ideal method for naked eye three-dimensional (3D) display, and computer-generated holography (CGH) makes it possible to reconstruct virtual objects. Meanwhile, metasurfaces consisted of subwavelength structures show great potential in controlling of light which is suitable for hologram design. There are many inspired works to achieve dynamic meta-hologram as we summary in this paper. And it can be co…

Holographic near-eye displays offer unprecedented capabilities for virtual and augmented reality systems, including perceptually important focus cues. Although artificial intelligence--driven algorithms for computer-generated holography (CGH) have recently made much progress in improving the image quality and synthesis efficiency of holograms, these algorithms are not directly applicable to emerging phase-only spatial light modulators (SLM) that are extremely fast but offer phase control with very limited precision. The speed of these SLMs offers time multiplexing capabilities, essentially ena…
