Increasing evidence suggests that He II proximity profiles in the quasar spectra at z ~ 3 - 4 are sensitive probes of quasar ages. But the development of their H I counterparts is difficult to trace and remains poorly constrained. We compare the UV spectra of 15 He II quasars with their high-resolution optical counterparts and find a significant correlation between the sizes of He II and H I proximity zones. The luminous quasar HE2347-4342 displays a null proximity zone in both He II and H I, suggesting that it is extremely young (age < 0.2 Myr). Three other quasars also display small proximity zones for He II and H I. There is no evidence that a H I ionization zone expands considerably faster than its He II counterpart. The results suggest that the expansion of quasar ionizing fronts may be noticeably slower than the speed of light, and raise the possibility of distinguishing young and old quasars from the sizes of their H I proximity zones.
In this paper, we study the sizes of quasar proximity zones with synthetic quasar absorption spectra obtained by post-processing a Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) simulation. CROC simulations have both relatively large box sizes and high spacial resolution, allowing us to resolve Lyman limit systems, which are crucial for modeling the quasar absorption spectra. We find that before reionization most quasar proximity zone sizes grow steadily for $\sim 10$ Myr, while after reionization they grow rapidly but only for $\sim 0.1$ Myr. We also find a slow growth of $R_{\rm obs}$ with decreasi…
Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of supermassive black hole formation, but simultaneously explaining proximity zone sizes and black hole masses has proved to be challenging. We study the robustness of some of the assumptions that are usually made to infer quasar lifetimes from proximity zone sizes. We show that small proximity zones can be readily explained by quasars that vary in brightness with a short duty cycle of $f_\mathrm{duty}\sim 0.1$ and short bright periods of $t_\mathrm{on}\sim 10^4$ yr, even for long lifetimes. We further show that reconciling this with b…
We study quasar proximity zones in the redshift range $5.77 \leq z \leq 6.54$ by homogeneously analyzing $34$ medium resolution spectra, encompassing both archival and newly obtained data, and exploiting recently updated systemic redshift and magnitude measurements. Whereas previous studies found strong evolution of proximity zone sizes with redshift, and argued that this provides evidence for a rapidly evolving intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction during reionization, we measure a much shallower trend $\propto(1+z)^{-1.44}$. We compare our measured proximity zone sizes to predictions f…
The HeII transverse proximity effect - enhanced HeII Lyα transmission in a background sightline caused by the ionizing radiation of a foreground quasar - offers a unique opportunity to probe the emission properties of quasars, in particular the emission geometry (obscuration, beaming) and the quasar lifetime. Building on the foreground quasar survey published in Schmidt+2017, we present a detailed model of the HeII transverse proximity effect, specifically designed to include light travel time effects, finite quasar ages, and quasar obscuration. We post-process outputs from a cosmological hydr…
The lifetime of quasars is fundamental for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes, and is an important ingredient in models of the reionization of the intergalactic medium. However, despite various attempts to determine quasar lifetimes, current estimates from a variety of methods are uncertain by orders of magnitude. This work combines cosmological hydrodynamical simulations and 1D radiative transfer to investigate the structure and evolution of the He II Ly$α$ proximity zones around quasars at $z \simeq 3-4$. We show that the time evolution in the proximity zone can be describe…
We have used spectra of 181 projected quasar pairs at separations $\le 1.5$ arcmins from the Sloan Digital Sky-Survey Data Release 12 in the redshift range of 2.5 to 3.5 to probe the proximity regions of the foreground quasars. We study the proximity effect both in the longitudinal as well as in the transverse directions, by carrying out a comparison of the \lya absorption lines originating from the vicinity of quasars to those originating from the general inter-galactic medium at the same redshift. We found an enhancement in the transmitted flux within 4 Mpc to the quasar in the longitudinal …

Constraints on the time-scales of quasar activity are key to understanding the formation and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), quasar triggering mechanisms, and possible feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, observational estimates of this so-called quasar lifetime are highly uncertain (t_Q~10^4-10^9 yr), because most methods are indirect and involve many model-dependent assumptions. Direct evidence of earlier activity is gained from the higher ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the quasar environs, observable as enhanced Ly$α$ transmission in the so-ca…
Insight into quasar ages may be obtained from the proximity effect, but so far only in a limited number of bright quasars. Based on ~2600 SDSS quasar spectra at 2.5 <= z <= 3.5, a search for spectral voids between Ly-alpha forest lines finds proximity zones over a wide range of radial distances. The majority of zone sizes are less than 5 Mpc, with their numbers decreasing exponentialy towards larger distances. After normalization by luminosities, the zone sizes are distributed an e-folding scale of 0.64 as compared with the anticipated values. A group of quasars are selected for their large pr…
The lifetime of quasars can be estimated by means of their proximity zone sizes, which are regions of enhanced flux bluewards of the Lyman-$α$ emission line observed in the rest-frame UV spectra of high-redshift quasars, because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to the quasars' radiation. We estimate the effective lifetime of the high-redshift quasar population from the composite transmitted flux profile within the proximity zone region of a sample of $15$ quasars at $5.8\leq z\leq 6.6$ with precise systemic redshifts, and similar luminosities, i.e. $-27.6\leq M_{1450}\leq-26.4$…
The proximity profile in the spectra of z~3 quasars, where fluxes extend blueward of the He II Lya wavelength 304 (1+z) A, is one of the most important spectral features in the study of the intergalactic medium. Based on the HST spectra of 24 He II quasars, we find that the majority of them display a proximity profile, corresponding to an ionization radius as large as 20 Mpc in the source's rest frame. In comparison with those in the H i spectra of the quasars at z~6, the He II proximity effect is more prominent and is observed over a considerably longer period of reionization. The He II proxi…
The duration of quasar accretion episodes is a key quantity for distinguishing between models for the formation and growth of supermassive black holes, the evolution of quasars, and their potential feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, this critical timescale, often referred to as the quasar lifetime, is still uncertain by orders of magnitude ($t_{\rm Q} \simeq 0.01\,{\rm Myr} - 1\,{\rm Gyr}$). Absorption spectra of quasars exhibiting transmission in the He II Ly$α$ forest provide a unique opportunity to make precise measurements of the quasar lifetime. Indeed, the size of a quasar…
In a multi-wavelength survey of $13$ quasars at $5.8\lesssim z\lesssim6.5$, that were pre-selected to be potentially young, we find five objects with extremely small proximity zone sizes that may imply UV-luminous quasar lifetimes of $\lesssim 100,000$ years. Proximity zones are regions of enhanced transmitted flux in the vicinity of the quasars that are sensitive to the quasars' lifetimes because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to their radiation. We combine sub-mm observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), …
The extents of proximity zones of high-redshift quasars enable constraints on the timescales of quasar activity, which are fundamental for understanding the growth of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that power the quasars' emission. In this study, we obtain precise estimates for the ultraviolet (UV) luminous lifetimes of ten quasars at $5.8< z< 6.5$. These objects were pre-selected to have short lifetimes based on preliminary measurements of their proximity zone sizes, and were then targeted for high quality follow-up sub-mm, optical, and infrared observations required to increase the mea…
Understanding the growth of the supermassive black holes powering luminous quasars, their co-evolution with host galaxies, and impact on the surrounding intergalactic medium depends sensitively on the duration of quasar accretion episodes. Unfortunately, this time-scale, known as the quasar lifetime, $t_{\rm Q}$, is still uncertain by orders of magnitude ($t_{\rm Q}\simeq 0.01~{\rm Myr}-1~{\rm Gyr}$). However, the extent of the He II Ly$α$ proximity zones in the absorption spectra of $z_{\rm qso}\sim3-4$ quasars constitutes a unique probe, providing sensitivity to lifetimes up to $\sim 30$ Myr…
Since their discovery twenty years ago, the observed luminosity function of $z\gtrsim6$ quasars has been suspected to be biased by gravitational lensing. Apart from the recent discovery of UHS J0439+1634 at $z\approx6.52$, no other strongly lensed $z\gtrsim6$ quasar has been conclusively identified. The hyperluminous $z\approx6.33$ quasar SDSS J0100+2802, believed to host a supermassive black hole of $\sim10^{10} M_\odot$, has recently been claimed to be lensed by a factor of $\sim450$, which would negate both its extreme luminosity and black hole mass. However, its Ly$α$-transparent proximity…
We calculate the distribution of HI within 750 proper kpc/h of a quasar, Lbol = 1.62e13 Lsun, powered by an SMBH, Mbh = 4.47e8 Msun, at z = 3. Our numerical model includes a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that tracks the self consistent growth and thermal feedback of black holes calculated using GADGET-3 as well as a detailed post-processing ray tracing treatment of the non-uniform ionizing radiation field calculated using SPHRAY, which naturally accounts for the self shielding of optically thick systems. We show that the correct treatment of self shielding introduces a flattening featur…

Quasar proximity zones at $z>5.5$ correspond to over-dense and over-ionized environments. Galaxies found inside proximity zones can therefore display features which would otherwise be masked by absorption in the IGM. We demonstrate the utility of this quasar-galaxy synergy by reporting the discovery of the first three `proximate Lyman-$α$ emitters' (LAEs) within the proximity zone of quasar J0836 at $z=5.802$ (\textit{Aerith A, B} and \textit{C}). \textit{Aerith A}, located behind the quasar with an impact parameter $D_\perp = 278$ pkpc, provides the first detection of a Lyman-$α$ transverse p…
The HeII transverse proximity effect -- enhanced HeII Ly$α$~transmission in a background sightline caused by the ionizing radiation of a foreground quasar -- offers a unique opportunity to probe the morphology of quasar-driven HeII reionization. We conduct a comprehensive spectroscopic survey to find $z\sim3$ quasars in the foreground of 22 background quasar sightlines with HST/COS HeII Ly$α$~transmission spectra. With our two-tiered survey strategy, consisting of a deep pencil-beam survey and a shallow wide-field survey, we discover 131 new quasars, which we complement with known SDSS/BOSS qu…
We present measurements of the size of the quasar proximity zone ($R_p$) for eleven low-luminosity ($-26.16\leq M_{1450}\leq-22.83$) quasars at $z\sim6$, discovered by the Subaru High-$z$ Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars project (SHELLQs). Our faint quasar sample expands the $R_p$ measurement down to $M_{1450}=-22.83$ mag, where more common quasar populations dominate at the epoch. We restrict the sample to quasars whose systemic redshifts have been precisely measured by [CII] 158 $μ$m or MgII $λ$2798 emission lines. We also update the $R_p$ measurements for 26 luminous quasars presented …
We assess a model of late cosmic reionization in which the ionizing background radiation arises entirely from high redshift quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The low optical depth to Thomson scattering reported by the Planck Collaboration pushes the redshift of instantaneous reionization down to z=8.8^{+1.7}_{-1.4} and greatly reduces the need for significant Lyman-continuum emission at very early times. We show that, if recent claims of a numerous population of faint AGNs at z=4-6 are upheld, and the high inferred AGN comoving emissivity at these epochs persists to higher, z~10…
We aim to find out the reason why there exists an anisotropic HI absorption around quasars; i.e., the environments around quasars are highly biased toward producing strong HI absorption in transverse direction while there exists a significant deficit of HI absorption within a few Mpc of quasars along line-of-sight. The most plausible explanation for this opposite trend is that the transverse direction is shadowed from the quasar UV radiation due to dust torus. However, a critical weakness of this idea is that we have no information on inclination angle of our sightline relative to the torus. I…
High-redshift quasars ionize HeII into HeIII around them, heating the IGM in the process and creating large regions with elevated temperature. In this work, we demonstrate a method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) to recover the spatial profile for $T_0$, the temperature at the mean cosmic density, in quasar proximity zones. We train the neural network with synthetic spectra drawn from a Cosmic Reionization on Computers simulation. We discover that the simple CNN is able to recover the temperature profile with an accuracy of $\approx 1400$ K in an idealized case of negligible obse…
ALMA survey of a massive node of the Cosmic Web at $z\sim 3$. II. A dynamically cold and massive disk galaxy in the proximity of a hyperluminous quasar
Measuring the density of the intergalactic medium using quasar sightlines in the epoch of reionization is challenging due to the saturation of Lyman-$α$ absorption. Near a luminous quasar, however, the enhanced radiation creates a proximity zone observable in the quasar spectra where the Lyman-$α$ absorption is not saturated. In this study, we use $10$ high-resolution ($R\gtrsim 10,000$) $z\sim 6$ quasar spectra from the extended XQR-30 sample to measure the density field in the quasar proximity zones. We find a variety of environments within $3$ pMpc distance from the quasars. We compare the …
We have carried out deep and wide field imaging observations with narrow bands targeting 11 quasar fields to systematically study the possible photoevaporation effect of quasar radiation on surrounding low mass galaxies at $z\sim2-3$. We focused on Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at the same redshifts as the quasars that lie within the quasar proximity zones, where the ultra-violet radiation from the quasars is higher than the average background at that epoch. We found that LAEs with high rest-frame equivalent width of Ly$α$ emission ($EW_0$) of $\gtrsim 150$Å$~$ with low stellar mass ($\lesssim 1…
We model the time-dependent evolution of metal-enriched intergalactic and circumgalactic gas exposed to the fluctuating radiation field from an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We consider diffuse gas densities (n_H=10^-5-10^-3 cm^-3) exposed to the extra-galactic background (EGB) and initially in thermal equilibrium (T \sim 10^4-10^4.5 K). Once the proximate AGN field turns on, additional photo-ionisation rapidly ionises the HI and metals. The enhanced AGN radiation field turns off after a typical AGN lifetime (tau_AGN=1-20 Myr) and the field returns to the EGB intensity, but the metals remain …
Measuring the proximity effect and the damping wing of intergalactic neutral hydrogen in quasar spectra during the epoch of reionization requires an estimate of the intrinsic continuum at rest-frame wavelengths $λ_{\rm rest}\sim1200$-$1260$ Å. In contrast to previous works which used composite spectra with matched spectral properties or explored correlations between parameters of broad emission lines, we opted for a non-parametric predictive approach based on principal component analysis (PCA) to predict the intrinsic spectrum from the spectral properties at redder (i.e. unabsorbed) wavelength…
We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of gas and galaxies using new X-Shooter observations of $z\sim3-4$ quasars. Adding the X-Shooter data to an existing dataset of high resolution quasar spectroscopy, we use a total sample of 29 quasars alongside $\sim1700$ Lyman Break Galaxies in the redshift range $2<z<3.5$. Analysing the Ly$α$ forest auto-correlation function using the full quasar sample, we find $s_0=0.081\pm0.006h^{-1}$Mpc. We then investigate the clustering and dynamics of Ly$α$ forest absorbers around $z\sim3$ LBGs. From the redshift-space cross-correlation, we find $s_0=…
We examine the contribution of high-redshift (z>6) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to cosmic hydrogen reionization, by tracing the growth and ionizing output of the first generation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our calculations are anchored to the observed population of z~6 quasars, and trace back the evolving spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the accretion flows that power these early AGNs and consider a variety of growth histories, including super-Eddington accretion. Compared to a fixed-shape SED, the evolving thin disks can produce ionizing radiation that is higher by up to ~80…
We investigate the NV absorption signal along the line of sight of background quasars, in order to test the robustness of the use of this ion as criterion to select intrinsic (i.e. physically related to the quasar host galaxy) narrow absorption lines (NALs). We build composite spectra from a sample of $\sim$ 1000 CIV absorbers, covering the redshift range 2.55 < z < 4.73, identified in 100 individual sight lines from the XQ-100 Legacy Survey. We detect a statistical significant NV absorption signal only within 5000 km s$^{-1}$ of the systemic redshift, z$\rm_{em}$. This absorption trough is $\…
We publicly release a new sample of $34$ medium resolution quasar spectra at $5.77\leq z_{\rm em}\leq6.54$ observed with the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) on the Keck telescope. This quasar sample represents an ideal laboratory to study the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the end stages of the epoch of reionization, and constrain the timing and morphology of the phase transition. For a subset of $23$ of our highest signal-to-noise ratio spectra (S/N$>7$, per $10\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ pixel), we present a new measurement of the Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest opacity spanning the redshift ra…
Bright quasars, observed when the Universe was less than one billion years old (z>5.5), are known to host massive black holes (~10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$), and are thought to reside in the center of massive dark matter overdensities. In this picture, overdensities of galaxies are expected around high redshift quasars. However, observations based on the detection of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) around these quasars do not offer a clear picture: this may be due to the uncertain redshift constraints of LBGs, which are selected through broad-band filters only. To circumvent such uncertainties, we here p…
