The extents of proximity zones of high-redshift quasars enable constraints on the timescales of quasar activity, which are fundamental for understanding the growth of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that power the quasars' emission. In this study, we obtain precise estimates for the ultraviolet (UV) luminous lifetimes of ten quasars at $5.8< z< 6.5$. These objects were pre-selected to have short lifetimes based on preliminary measurements of their proximity zone sizes, and were then targeted for high quality follow-up sub-mm, optical, and infrared observations required to increase the measurements' precision and securely determine their lifetimes. By comparing these proximity zone sizes to mock quasar spectra generated from radiative transfer simulations at a range of different lifetimes, we deduce extremely short lifetimes $t_{\rm Q}<10^4$ yr for four objects in our sample, whereas the remaining quasars are consistent with longer lifetimes of $t_{\rm Q}\gtrsim 10^5$ yr. These young objects with small proximity zones represent $\lesssim10\%$ of the quasar population as a whole. We compare our results in detail to other studies on timescales of quasar activity, which point towards an average lifetime of $t_{\rm Q}\sim10^6$ yr for the quasar population. This is consistent with finding newly turned on quasars approximately $\sim 1-10\%$ of the time. These young quasars represent an unique opportunity to study triggering and feedback mechanisms of SMBHs, since the onset of their UV luminous quasar phase happened only recently, and therefore traces of this process might still be observable.
The lifetime of quasars can be estimated by means of their proximity zone sizes, which are regions of enhanced flux bluewards of the Lyman-$α$ emission line observed in the rest-frame UV spectra of high-redshift quasars, because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to the quasars' radiation. We estimate the effective lifetime of the high-redshift quasar population from the composite transmitted flux profile within the proximity zone region of a sample of $15$ quasars at $5.8\leq z\leq 6.6$ with precise systemic redshifts, and similar luminosities, i.e. $-27.6\leq M_{1450}\leq-26.4$…
The duration of quasar accretion episodes is a key quantity for distinguishing between models for the formation and growth of supermassive black holes, the evolution of quasars, and their potential feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, this critical timescale, often referred to as the quasar lifetime, is still uncertain by orders of magnitude ($t_{\rm Q} \simeq 0.01\,{\rm Myr} - 1\,{\rm Gyr}$). Absorption spectra of quasars exhibiting transmission in the He II Ly$α$ forest provide a unique opportunity to make precise measurements of the quasar lifetime. Indeed, the size of a quasar…
Enhanced ionizing radiation in close proximity to redshift $z\gtrsim 6$ quasars creates short windows of intergalactic Ly$α$ transmission blueward of the quasar Ly$α$ emission lines. The majority of these Ly$α$ near-zones are consistent with quasars that have optically/UV bright lifetimes of $t_{\rm Q}\sim 10^{5}-10^{7}\rm\,yr$. However, lifetimes as short as $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{4}\rm\,yr$ appear to be required by the smallest Ly$α$ near-zones. These short lifetimes present an apparent challenge for the growth of $\sim 10^{9}\rm\,M_{\odot}$ black holes at $z\gtrsim 6$. Accretion over longer…
The lifetime of quasars is fundamental for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes, and is an important ingredient in models of the reionization of the intergalactic medium. However, despite various attempts to determine quasar lifetimes, current estimates from a variety of methods are uncertain by orders of magnitude. This work combines cosmological hydrodynamical simulations and 1D radiative transfer to investigate the structure and evolution of the He II Ly$α$ proximity zones around quasars at $z \simeq 3-4$. We show that the time evolution in the proximity zone can be describe…
Understanding the growth of the supermassive black holes powering luminous quasars, their co-evolution with host galaxies, and impact on the surrounding intergalactic medium depends sensitively on the duration of quasar accretion episodes. Unfortunately, this time-scale, known as the quasar lifetime, $t_{\rm Q}$, is still uncertain by orders of magnitude ($t_{\rm Q}\simeq 0.01~{\rm Myr}-1~{\rm Gyr}$). However, the extent of the He II Ly$α$ proximity zones in the absorption spectra of $z_{\rm qso}\sim3-4$ quasars constitutes a unique probe, providing sensitivity to lifetimes up to $\sim 30$ Myr…
The HeII transverse proximity effect - enhanced HeII Lyα transmission in a background sightline caused by the ionizing radiation of a foreground quasar - offers a unique opportunity to probe the emission properties of quasars, in particular the emission geometry (obscuration, beaming) and the quasar lifetime. Building on the foreground quasar survey published in Schmidt+2017, we present a detailed model of the HeII transverse proximity effect, specifically designed to include light travel time effects, finite quasar ages, and quasar obscuration. We post-process outputs from a cosmological hydr…
We constrain the average episodic quasar lifetime (as in steady-state accretion) using two statistics of quasars that are recently turned off (i.e., dimmed by a large factor): 1) the fraction of turned-off quasars in a statistical sample photometrically observed over an extended period (e.g., $Δt=20$ yrs); 2) the fraction of massive galaxies that show 'orphan' broad MgII emission, argued to be short-lived echoes of recently turned-off quasars. The two statistics constrain the average episodic quasar lifetime to be hundreds to thousands of years. Much longer (or shorter) episodic lifetimes are …
We study quasar proximity zones in the redshift range $5.77 \leq z \leq 6.54$ by homogeneously analyzing $34$ medium resolution spectra, encompassing both archival and newly obtained data, and exploiting recently updated systemic redshift and magnitude measurements. Whereas previous studies found strong evolution of proximity zone sizes with redshift, and argued that this provides evidence for a rapidly evolving intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction during reionization, we measure a much shallower trend $\propto(1+z)^{-1.44}$. We compare our measured proximity zone sizes to predictions f…
The quasar lifetime $t_{\rm\,Q}$ is one of the most fundamental quantities for understanding quasar evolution and the growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), but remains uncertain by several orders of magnitude. In a recent study we uncovered a population of very young quasars ($t_{\rm Q}\lesssim10^4-10^5$ yr), based on the sizes of their proximity zones, which are regions of enhanced Ly$α$ forest transmission near the quasar resulting from its own ionizing radiation. The presence of such young objects poses significant challenges to models of SMBH formation, which already struggle to expl…
In a multi-wavelength survey of $13$ quasars at $5.8\lesssim z\lesssim6.5$, that were pre-selected to be potentially young, we find five objects with extremely small proximity zone sizes that may imply UV-luminous quasar lifetimes of $\lesssim 100,000$ years. Proximity zones are regions of enhanced transmitted flux in the vicinity of the quasars that are sensitive to the quasars' lifetimes because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to their radiation. We combine sub-mm observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), …
A toy model is developed to understand how the spatial distribution of fluorescent emitters in the vicinity of bright quasars could be affected by the geometry of the quasar bi-conical radiation field and by its lifetime. The model is then applied to the distribution of high equivalent width Lyman $α$ emitters (with rest-frame equivalent widths above 100 A, threshold used in e.g. Trainor & Steidel, 2013) identified in a deep narrow-band 36x36 arcmin$^2$ image centered on the luminous quasar Q0420-388. These emitters are found to the edge of the field and show some evidence of an azimuthal asym…
We use multi-epoch quasar spectroscopy to determine how accurately single-epoch spectroscopy can locate quasars in emission-line parameter space in order to inform investigations where time-resolved spectroscopy is not available. We explore the improvements in emission-line characterization that result from using non-parametric information from many lines as opposed to a small number of parameters for a single line, utilizing reconstructions based on an independent component analysis applied to the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project. We find that most of the q…
High-redshift quasars ionize HeII into HeIII around them, heating the IGM in the process and creating large regions with elevated temperature. In this work, we demonstrate a method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) to recover the spatial profile for $T_0$, the temperature at the mean cosmic density, in quasar proximity zones. We train the neural network with synthetic spectra drawn from a Cosmic Reionization on Computers simulation. We discover that the simple CNN is able to recover the temperature profile with an accuracy of $\approx 1400$ K in an idealized case of negligible obse…
Mid-infrared (MIR) quasar spectra exhibit a suite of emission features including high ionization coronal lines from the narrow line region illuminated by the ionizing continuum, broad dust bumps from silicates and graphites, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features from star formation in the host galaxy. However, in Spitzer Infared Spectrograph (IRS) data, few features are detected in most individual spectra because of typically low signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). By generating spectral composites from over 180 IRS observations of Sloan Digital Sky Survey broad-line quasars, we boost t…
Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of supermassive black hole formation, but simultaneously explaining proximity zone sizes and black hole masses has proved to be challenging. We study the robustness of some of the assumptions that are usually made to infer quasar lifetimes from proximity zone sizes. We show that small proximity zones can be readily explained by quasars that vary in brightness with a short duty cycle of $f_\mathrm{duty}\sim 0.1$ and short bright periods of $t_\mathrm{on}\sim 10^4$ yr, even for long lifetimes. We further show that reconciling this with b…
A power-law time-dependent lightcurve for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is expected by the self-regulated black hole growth scenario, in which the feedback of AGNs expels gas and shut down accretion. This is also supported by the observed power-law Eddington ratio distribution of AGNs. At high redshifts, the AGN life timescale is comparable with (or even shorter than) the age of the universe, which set a constraint on the minimal Eddington ratio for AGNs on the assumption of a power-law AGN lightcurve. The black hole mass function (BHMF) of AGN relics is calculated by integrating the continuit…
We present the results of an optical spectroscopic survey of 46 heavily obscured quasar candidates. Objects are selected using their mid-infrared (mid-IR) colours and magnitudes from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and their optical magnitudes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Candidate Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are selected to have mid-IR colours indicative of quasar activity and lie in a region of mid-IR colour space outside previously published X-ray based selection regions. We obtain optical spectra for our sample using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the South…
The discovery of giant quasar Ly$α$ nebulae at $z>2$ has opened up the possibility to directly study in emission the Circumgalactic and Intergalactic Medium (CGM/IGM). However, the resonant nature of the Ly$α$ line and its different emission mechanisms hamper the ability to constrain both the kinematics and physical properties of the CGM/IGM. Here, we present results of a pilot project aiming at the detection of CGM H$α$ emission, a line which does not suffer from these limitations. To this end, we first used KCWI to detect Ly$α$ emission around three bright quasars with $2.25<z<2.27$, a range…
We present the discovery of PSO J083.8371+11.8482, a weak emission line quasar with extreme star formation rate at $z=6.3401$. This quasar was selected from Pan-STARRS1, UHS, and unWISE photometric data. Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy follow-up indicates a MgII-based black hole mass of $M_\mathrm{BH}=\left(2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.4}\right)\times10^9~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $L_\mathrm{bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}=0.5^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, in line with actively accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at $z\gtrsim6$. HST imaging sets strong constraint on lens-boosting, showing no relevant effect on the apparent e…
Insight into quasar ages may be obtained from the proximity effect, but so far only in a limited number of bright quasars. Based on ~2600 SDSS quasar spectra at 2.5 <= z <= 3.5, a search for spectral voids between Ly-alpha forest lines finds proximity zones over a wide range of radial distances. The majority of zone sizes are less than 5 Mpc, with their numbers decreasing exponentialy towards larger distances. After normalization by luminosities, the zone sizes are distributed an e-folding scale of 0.64 as compared with the anticipated values. A group of quasars are selected for their large pr…
Constraints on the time-scales of quasar activity are key to understanding the formation and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), quasar triggering mechanisms, and possible feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, observational estimates of this so-called quasar lifetime are highly uncertain (t_Q~10^4-10^9 yr), because most methods are indirect and involve many model-dependent assumptions. Direct evidence of earlier activity is gained from the higher ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the quasar environs, observable as enhanced Ly$α$ transmission in the so-ca…
As of October 2021 (Period 108), the European Southern Observatory (ESO) offers a new mode of the ESPRESSO spectrograph designed to use the High Resolution grating with 4x2 binning (spatial by spectral; HR42 mode) with the specific objective of observing faint targets with a single Unit Telescope at Paranal. We validated the new HR42 mode using four hours of on-target observations of the quasar J0003-2603, known to host an intervening metal-poor absorber along the line of sight. The capabilities of the ESPRESSO HR42 mode (resolving power R~137 000) were evaluated by comparing to a UVES spectru…
Almost 10 yr of $γ$-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) have revealed extreme $γ$-ray outbursts from flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), temporarily making these objects the brightest $γ$-ray emitters in the sky. Yet, the location and mechanisms of the $γ$-ray emission remain elusive. We characterize long-term $γ$-ray variability and the brightest $γ$-ray flares of six FSRQs. Consecutively zooming in on the brightest flares, which we identify in an objective way through Bayesian blocks and a hill-climbing algorithm, we find variability on subhour time scales and as shor…
Angular differential imaging provides a novel way of probing the high contrast of our universe. Until now, its applications have been primarily localized to searching for exoplanets around nearby stars. This work presents a suite of applications of angular differential imaging from the theoretical underpinning of data reduction, to its use characterizing substellar objects to a new application looking for the host galaxies of damped Lyman α systems, which are usually lost in the glare of ultra-bright quasars along the line of sight.
A new model for quasar-hosting dark matter halos, meeting two physical conditions, is put forth. First, significant interactions are taken into consideration to trigger quasar activities. Second, satellites in very massive halos at low redshift are removed from consideration, due to their deficiency of cold gas. We analyze the {\em Millennium Simulation} to find halos that meet these two conditions and simultaneously match two-point auto-correlation functions of quasars and cross-correlation functions between quasars and galaxies at $z=0.5-3.2$. %The found halos have some distinct properties w…
We performed high resolution radio observations of a new sample of ten BAL quasars using both the VLBA and EVN at 5 GHz. All the selected sources have balnicity indices (BI) more than 0 and radio flux densities less than 80 mJy at 1.4 GHz. They are very compact with linear sizes of the order of a few tens of parsecs and radio luminosities at 1.4 GHz above the FRI-FRII luminosity threshold. Most of the observed objects have been resolved at 5 GHz showing one-sided, probably core-jet structures, typical for quasars. We discuss in detail their age and orientation based on the radio observations. …
The absence of high Eddington ratio, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in local ($z\lesssim0.1$) samples of moderate luminosity AGN has generally been explained to result from radiation pressure on the dusty gas governing the level of nuclear ($\lesssim10$pc) obscuration. However, very high accretion rates are routinely reported among obscured quasars at higher luminosities, and may require a different feedback mechanism. We compile constraints on obscuration and Eddington ratio for samples of X-ray, optical, infrared, and submm selected AGN at quasar luminosities. Whereas moderate luminos…
We present the first characterization of the circumgalactic medium of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs), using a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ LAEs detected with the VLT/MUSE in fields centered on 8 bright background quasars. The LAEs have low Ly$α$ luminosities ($\sim 10^{42}\,\text{erg}\,\text{s}^{-1}$) and star formation rates (SFRs) $\sim 1~\text{M}_\odot\,\text{yr}^{-1}$, which for main sequence galaxies corresponds to stellar masses of only $\sim 10^{8.6}\,\text{M}_\odot$. The median transverse distance between the LAEs and the quasar sightlines is 165 proper kpc (pkpc). We stacked the high-resolution …
We characterize the Ly$α$ halo and absorption systems toward PSO J083+11, a unique $z=6.3401$ weak-line quasar, using Gemini/GNIRS, Magellan/FIRE, and VLT/MUSE data. Strong absorptions by hydrogen and several metal lines (e.g., CII, MgII, and OI) are discovered in the spectrum, which indicates the presence of: (i) a proximate sub-damped Ly$α$ (sub-DLA) system at $z=6.314$ and (ii) a MgII absorber at $z=2.2305$. To describe the observed damping wing signal, we model the Ly$α$ absorption with a combination of a sub-DLA with the neutral hydrogen column density of $\log N_\mathrm{HI} = 20.03 \pm 0…
The HeII transverse proximity effect -- enhanced HeII Ly$α$~transmission in a background sightline caused by the ionizing radiation of a foreground quasar -- offers a unique opportunity to probe the morphology of quasar-driven HeII reionization. We conduct a comprehensive spectroscopic survey to find $z\sim3$ quasars in the foreground of 22 background quasar sightlines with HST/COS HeII Ly$α$~transmission spectra. With our two-tiered survey strategy, consisting of a deep pencil-beam survey and a shallow wide-field survey, we discover 131 new quasars, which we complement with known SDSS/BOSS qu…
Understanding the connection between nuclear activity and galaxy environment remains critical in constraining models of galaxy evolution. By exploiting extensive catalogued data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, we identify a representative sample of 205 quasars at 0.1 < z < 0.35 and establish a comparison sample of galaxies, closely matched to the quasar sample in terms of both stellar mass and redshift. On scales <1 Mpc, the galaxy number counts and group membership of quasars appear entirely consistent with those of the matched galaxy sample. Despite this, we find that quasar…
Despite the emerging morphological evidence that luminous quasar-like AGN are triggered in galaxy mergers, the natures of the triggering mergers and the order of events in the triggering sequence remain uncertain. In this work, we present a detailed study of the stellar populations of the host galaxies of 21 type II quasars, with the aim of understanding the sequence of events between the onset of the merger, the triggering of the associated starburst and the initiation of the quasar activity. To this end, we model high quality, wide spectral coverage, intermediate resolution optical spectra o…
In order to study the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies we develop an automated pipeline to estimate the optical continuum of quasars and detect intervening metal absorption line systems with a matched kernel convolution technique and adaptive S/N criteria. We process $\sim$ one million quasars in the latest Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and compile a large sample of $\sim$ 160,000 MgII absorbers, together with $\sim$ 70,000 FeII systems, in the redshift range $0.35<z_{abs}<2.3$. Combining these with the SDSS DR16 spectroscopy of $\sim1.1$ million luminous…
