Since their discovery twenty years ago, the observed luminosity function of $z\gtrsim6$ quasars has been suspected to be biased by gravitational lensing. Apart from the recent discovery of UHS J0439+1634 at $z\approx6.52$, no other strongly lensed $z\gtrsim6$ quasar has been conclusively identified. The hyperluminous $z\approx6.33$ quasar SDSS J0100+2802, believed to host a supermassive black hole of $\sim10^{10} M_\odot$, has recently been claimed to be lensed by a factor of $\sim450$, which would negate both its extreme luminosity and black hole mass. However, its Ly$α$-transparent proximity zone is the largest known at $z>6$, suggesting an intrinsically extreme ionizing luminosity. Here we show that the lensing hypothesis of $z\gtrsim6$ quasars can be quantitatively constrained by their proximity zones. We first show that our proximity zone analysis can recover the strongly lensed nature of UHS J0439+1634, with an estimated magnification $μ=28.0^{+18.4}_{-11.7}(^{+44.9}_{-18.3})$ at 68% (95%) credibility that is consistent with previously published lensing models. We then show that the large proximity zone of SDSS J0100+2802 rules out lensing magnifications of $μ>4.9$ at 95% probability, and conclusively rule out the proposed $μ>100$ scenario. Future proximity zone analyses of existing $z\gtrsim6$ quasar samples have the potential to identify promising strongly lensed candidates, constrain the distribution of $z\gtrsim6$ quasar lensing, and improve our knowledge of the shape of the intrinsic quasar luminosity function.
Recently, Rastall gravity is undergoing a significant surge in popularity. We obtain a power-law total mass-density profile for the inner region (within several effective radius) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the space-time structures which are described by the static spherically-symmetric solutions of Rastall gravity under the assumption of perfect fluid matter. We find that in the inner region of ETGs, the Rastall dimensionless parameter $β=κλ$ determines the mass distribution. We then use 118 galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing systems to constrain the Rastall dimensionless para…
Strong gravitational lensing can provide accurate measurements of the stellar mass-to-light ratio $Υ$ in low-redshift ($z$ $\lesssim$ 0.05) early-type galaxies, and hence probe for possible variations in the stellar initial mass function (IMF). However, true multiple imaging lens systems are rare, hindering the construction of large nearby lens samples. Here, we present a method to derive upper limits on $Υ$ in galaxies with single close-projected background sources, where no counter-image is detected, down to some relative flux limit. We present a proof-of-principle application to three galax…
We study the cross correlation of damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) and their background quasars, using the most updated DLA catalog and the Planck 2018 CMB lensing convergence field. Our measurement suggests that the DLA bias $b_{\rm DLA}$ is smaller than $3.1$, corresponding to $\log(M/M_\odot h^{-1})\leq 12.3$ at a confidence of $90\%$. These constraints are broadly consistent with Alonso et al. (2018) and previous measurements by cross-correlation between DLAs and the Ly$α$ forest (e.g. Font-Ribera et al. 2012; Perez-Rafols et al. 2018). Further, our results demonstrate the potential of obtainin…
We discuss gravitational lensing in the Kehagias-Sfetsos space-time emerging in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In weak lensing we show that there are three regimes, depending on the value of $\bar λ=1/ωd^{2}$, where $ω$ is the Hořava-Lifshitz parameter and $d$ characterizes the lensing geometry. When $\bar λ$ is close to zero, light deflection typically produces two images, as in Schwarzschild lensing. For very large $\bar λ$ the space-time approaches flatness, therefore there is only one undeflected image. In the intermediate range of $\bar λ$ only the upper focused image is produc…
We measure the harmonic-space auto-power spectrum of the galaxy overdensity in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) First Data Release and its cross correlation with the map of the lensing convergence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from the Planck collaboration. We report a $\sim5σ$ detection of the cross-correlation. We show that the combination of the clustering power spectrum and CMB lensing cross-correlation allows us to place constraints on the high-redshift tail of the redshift distribution, one of the largest sources of uncertainty in the use of continuum surveys for cosmolo…
We study the inner structure of the group-scale lens CASSOWARY 31 (CSWA 31) by adopting both strong lensing and dynamical modeling. CSWA 31 is a peculiar lens system. The brightest group galaxy (BGG) is an ultra-massive elliptical galaxy at z = 0.683 with a weighted mean velocity dispersion of $σ= 432 \pm 31$ km s$^{-1}$. It is surrounded by group members and several lensed arcs probing up to ~150 kpc in projection. Our results significantly improve previous analyses of CSWA 31 thanks to the new HST imaging and MUSE integral-field spectroscopy. From the secure identification of five sets of mu…
The low-mass end of the stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) is constrained by focusing on the baryon-dominated central regions of strong lensing galaxies. We study in this letter the Einstein Cross (Q2237+0305), a z=0.04 barred galaxy whose bulge acts as lens on a background quasar. The positions of the four quasar images constrain the surface mass density on the lens plane, whereas the surface brightness (H-band NICMOS/HST imaging) along with deep spectroscopy of the lens (VLT/FORS1) allow us to constrain the stellar mass content, for a range of IMFs. We find that a classical single power law…
Low density regions are less affected by the nonlinear structure formation and baryonic physics. They are ideal places for probing the nature of dark energy, a possible explanation for the cosmic acceleration. Unlike void lensing, which requires identifications of individual voids, we study the stacked lensing signals around the low-density-positions (LDP), defined as places that are devoid of foreground bright galaxies in projection. The method allows a direct comparison with numerical results by drawing correspondence between the bright galaxies with halos. It leads to lensing signals that a…
We present a multi-wavelength analysis of two highly magnified strong gravitationally lensed galaxies, CLASS B0712+472 and CLASS B1608+656, at redshifts $1.34$ and $1.394$, respectively, using new VLBI and archival HST observations. We reconstruct the positions of the radio and optical emissions with their uncertainties using Monte Carlo sampling. We find that in CLASS B0712+472 the optical and radio emissions are co-spatial within $2\pm5$ mas ($17\pm 42$ pc at redshift of 1.34). But, in CLASS B1608+656, we reconstruct an optical-radio offset of $25\pm16$ mas ($214\pm137$ pc at redshift of 1.3…
Strong lensing of active galactic nuclei in the radio can result in razor-thin arcs, with a thickness of less than a milli-arcsecond, if observed at the resolution achievable with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Such razor-thin arcs provide a unique window on the coarseness of the matter distribution between source and observer. In this paper, we investigate to what extent such razor-thin arcs can constrain the number density and mass function of `free-floating' black holes, defined as black holes that do not, or no longer, reside at the centre of a galaxy. These can be either primor…
We present the first detailed analysis of the connection between galaxies and their dark matter halos for the unWISE galaxy catalog -- a full-sky, infrared-selected sample built from WISE data, containing over 500 million galaxies. Using unWISE galaxy-galaxy auto-correlation and Planck CMB lensing-galaxy cross-correlation measurements down to 10 arcmin angular scales, we constrain the halo occupation distribution (HOD), a model describing how central and satellite galaxies are distributed within dark matter halos, for three unWISE} galaxy samples at mean redshifts $\bar{z} \approx 0.6$, $1.1$,…
Gravitational waves from binary black holes that are gravitationally lensed can be distorted by small microlenses along the line of sight. Microlenses with masses of a few tens of solar masses, and that are close to a critical curve in the lens plane, can introduce a time delay of a few millisecond. Such time delay would result in distinctive interference patterns in the gravitational wave that can be measured with current experiments such as LIGO/Virgo. We consider the particular case of primordial black holes with masses between 5 and 50 solar masses acting as microlenses. We study the effec…
Gravitational lensing offers a competitive method to measure $H_0$ with the goal of 1% precision. A major obstacle comes in the form of lensing degeneracies, such as the mass sheet degeneracy (MSD), which make it possible for a family of density profiles to reproduce the same lensing observables but return different values of $H_0$. The modeling process artificially selects one choice from this family, potentially biasing $H_0$. The effect is more pronounced when the profile of a given lens is not perfectly described by the lens model, which will always be the case to some extent. To explore t…
One of the most powerful cosmological datasets when it comes to constraining neutrino masses is represented by galaxy power spectrum measurements, $P_{gg}(k)$. The constraining power of $P_{gg}(k)$ is however severely limited by uncertainties in the modeling of the scale-dependent galaxy bias $b(k)$. In this Letter we present a new method to constrain $b(k)$ by using the cross-correlation between the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing signal and galaxy maps ($C_\ell^{\rm κg}$) using a simple but theoretically well-motivated parametrization for $b(k)$. We apply the method using $C_\ell^{…

We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that …
We present the first strong-gravitational-lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster RXJ0437.1+0043 (RXJ0437; z = 0.285). Newly obtained, deep MUSE observations, Keck/MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy, and Hubble Space Telescope SNAPshot imaging reveal 13 multiply imaged background galaxies, three of them (at z=1.98, 2.97, and 6.02, respectively) in hyperbolic umbilic (H-U) lensing configurations. The H-U images are located only 20 -- 50 kpc from the cluster centre, i.e., at distances well inside the Einstein radius where images from other lens configurations are demagnified and often unobservabl…
Cross correlation with thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in cosmic microwave background observation and weak gravitational lensing effect in galaxy imaging survey opens a new window on constraining matter contents in the Universe at redshift less than 1. In this paper, we study the impact of radio sources and cosmic infrared background (CIB) on observed tSZ-lensing correlation. Assuming the best-fit model of CIB by the Planck satellite, we estimate that the residual correlation of CIB with large-scale structures will be of an order of $2\%$ of expected tSZ-lensing correlation from intrac…
We present a novel, purely geometric probe of cosmology based on measurements of differential time delays between images of strongly lensed quasars due to finite source effects. Our approach is solely dependent on cosmology via a ratio of angular diameter distances, the image separation, and the source size. It thereby entirely avoids the challenges of lens modelling that conventionally limit time delay cosmography, and instead entails the lensed reverberation mapping of the quasar Broad Line Region. We demonstrate that differential time delays are measurable with short cadence spectroscopic m…
