We improve the lower bound on the $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of the complete $d$-uniform hypergraph having $2d$ vertices to $Ω\left(\dfrac{(4\sqrt{2}/3^{3/4})^d}{d}\right)$ from $Ω(2^d \sqrt{d})$. We also establish that the $3$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $3$-uniform hypergraph having $n \geq 9$ vertices is at least $\dfrac{43}{42}\dbinom{n}{6}$.
We prove that the maximum number of crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $4$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of the complete $4$-uniform hypergraph having $n$ vertices is $13\dbinom{n}{8}$. We also prove that among all $4$-dimensional rectilinear drawings of a complete $4$-uniform hypergraph having $n$ vertices, the number of crossing pairs of hyperedges is maximized if all its vertices are placed at the vertices of a $4$-dimensional neighborly polytope. Our result proves the conjecture by Anshu et al. [Anshu, Gangopadhyay, Shannigrahi, and Vusirikala, 2017] for $d=4$.
We prove that the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $d$-partite $d$-uniform balanced hypergraph is $(2^{d-1}-1){\dbinom{n}{2}}^d$. We then prove that finding the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of an arbitrary $d$-uniform hypergraph is NP-hard.
We give a randomized scheme to create a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of a $d$-uniform hypergraph $H$ such that, in expectation the total number of crossing pairs of hyperedges is a constant fraction of the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of $H$.
In this paper, we consider a generalized version of the rectilinear crossing number problem of drawing complete graphs on a plane. The minimum number of crossing pairs of hyperedges in the $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of a $d$-uniform hypergraph is known as the $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of the hypergraph. The currently best-known lower bound on the $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $d$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is $Ω(\frac{2^d}{\sqrt{d}} \log d) {n \choose 2d}$. In this paper, we improve this lowe…
The maximum rectilinear crossing number of a graph $G$ is the maximum number of crossings in a good straight-line drawing of $G$ in the plane. In a good drawing any two edges intersect in at most one point (counting endpoints), no three edges have an interior point in common, and edges do not contain vertices in their interior. A spider is a subdivision of $K_{1,k}$. We provide both upper and lower bounds for the maximum rectilinear crossing number of spiders. While there are not many results on the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers of infinite families of graphs, our methods can be used to…
In this paper, we study the $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawings of the complete $d$-uniform hypergraph $K_{2d}^d$. Anshu et al. [Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications, 2017] used Gale transform and Ham-Sandwich theorem to prove that there exist $Ω\left(2^d\right)$ crossing pairs of hyperedges in such a drawing of $K_{2d}^d$. We improve this lower bound by showing that there exist $Ω\left(2^d \sqrt{ d}\right)$ crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of $K_{2d}^d$. We also prove the following results. 1. There are $Ω\left(2^d {d^{3/2}}\right)$ crossing pa…
We extend known results regarding the maximum rectilinear crossing number of the cycle graph (C_n) and the complete graph (K_n) to the class of general d-regular graphs R_{n,d}. We present the generalized star drawings of the d-regular graphs S_{n,d} of order n where n+d= 1 mod 2 and prove that they maximize the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers. A star-like drawing of S_{n,d} for n = d = 0 mod 2 is introduced and we conjecture that this drawing maximizes the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers, too. We offer a simpler proof of two results initially proved by Furry and Kleitman as partial …
It is proved that the rectilinear crossing number of every graph with bounded tree-width and bounded degree is linear in the number of vertices. **** This paper has been withdrawn by the author. **** The results have been superseeded by the author's paper with Jan Arne Telle: "Planar decompositions and the crossing number of graphs with an excluded minor", http://arxiv.org/math/0604467.
In this paper, we study the embedding of a complete balanced $d$-partite $d$-uniform hypergraph with all its $nd$ vertices represented as points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and each hyperedge drawn as a convex hull of $d$ corresponding vertices. We assume that the set of vertices is partitioned into $d$ disjoint sets, each of size $n$, such that each of the vertices in a hyperedge is from a different set. Two hyperedges are said to be crossing if they are vertex disjoint and contain a common point in their relative interiors. Using the Generalized Colored Tverberg Theorem, we observe…
There are two properties shared by all known crossing-minimizing geometric drawings of $K_n$, for $n$ a multiple of 3. First, the underlying $n$-point set of these drawings has exactly $3\binom{k+2}{2}$ $(\le k)$-edges, for all $0\le k < n/3$. Second, all such drawings have the $n$ points divided into three groups of equal size; this last property is captured under the concept of 3-decomposability. In this paper we show that these properties are tightly related: every $n$-point set with exactly $3\binom{k+2}{2}$ $(\le k)$-edges for all $0\le k < n/3$, is 3-decomposable. As an application, we p…
We provide a new lower bound on the number of $(\leq k)$-edges of a set of $n$ points in the plane in general position. We show that for $0 \leq k \leq\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor$ the number of $(\leq k)$-edges is at least $$ E_k(S) \geq 3\binom{k+2}{2} + \sum_{j=\lfloor\frac{n}{3}\rfloor}^k (3j-n+3), $$ which, for $k\geq \lfloor\tfrac{n}{3}\rfloor$, improves the previous best lower bound in [J. Balogh, G. Salazar, Improved bounds for the number of ($\leq k$)-sets, convex quadrilaterals, and the rectilinear crossing number of $K_n$]. As a main consequence, we obtain a new lower bound on the re…
A drawing of a graph in the plane is {\it pseudolinear} if the edges of the drawing can be extended to doubly-infinite curves that form an arrangement of pseudolines, that is, any pair of edges crosses precisely once. A special case are {\it rectilinear} drawings where the edges of the graph are drawn as straight line segments. The rectilinear (pseudolinear) crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of pairs of edges of the graph that cross in any of its rectilinear (pseudolinear) drawings. In this paper we describe an ongoing project to continuously obtain better asymptotic upper bound…
We introduce the Orchard crossing number, which is defined in a similar way to the well-known rectilinear crossing number. We compute the Orchard crossing number for some simple families of graphs. We also prove some properties of this crossing number. Moreover, we define a variant of this crossing number which is tightly connected to the rectilinear crossing number, and compute it for some simple families of graphs.
A drawing of a graph G in the plane is said to be a rectilinear drawing of G if the edges are required to be line segments (as opposed to Jordan curves). We assume no three vertices are collinear. The rectilinear crossing number of G is the fewest number of edge crossings attainable over all rectilinear drawings of G. Thanks to Richard Guy, exact values of the rectilinear crossing number of K_n, the complete graph on n vertices, for n = 3,...,9, are known (Guy 1972, White and Beinke 1978, Finch 2000, Sloanes A014540). Since 1971, thanks to the work of David Singer (1971, Gardiner 1986), the re…
We use the hypergraph container theory of Balogh--Morris--Samotij and Saxton--Thomason to obtain general rectilinear approximations and volume estimates for sequences of bodies closed under certain families of projections. We give a number of applications of our results, including a multicolour generalisation of a theorem of Hatami, Janson and Szegedy on the entropy of graph limits. Finally, we raise a number of questions on geometric and analytic approaches to containers.
Scheinerman and Wilf (1994) assert that `an important open problem in the study of graph embeddings is to determine the rectilinear crossing number of the complete graph K_n.' A rectilinear drawing of K_n is an arrangement of n vertices in the plane, every pair of which is connected by an edge that is a line segment. We assume that no three vertices are collinear, and that no three edges intersect in a point unless that point is an endpoint of all three. The rectilinear crossing number of K_n is the fewest number of edge crossings attainable over all rectilinear drawings of K_n. For each n we …
Let $\crs(K_n)$ be the minimum number of crossings over all rectilinear drawings of the complete graph on $n$ vertices on the plane. In this paper we prove that $\crs(K_n) < 0.380473\binom{n}{4}+Θ(n^3)$; improving thus on the previous best known upper bound. This is done by obtaining new rectilinear drawings of $K_n$ for small values of $n$, and then using known constructions to obtain arbitrarily large good drawings from smaller ones. The "small" sets where found using a simple heuristic detailed in this paper.
Let $D$ be a straight-line drawing of a graph. The rectilinear 2-colored crossing number of $D$ is the minimum number of crossings between edges of the same color, taken over all possible 2-colorings of the edges of $D$. First, we show lower and upper bounds on the rectilinear 2-colored crossing number for the complete graph $K_n$. To obtain this result, we prove that asymptotic bounds can be derived from optimal and near-optimal instances with few vertices. We obtain such instances using a combination of heuristics and integer programming. Second, for any fixed drawing of $K_n$, we improve th…
A straight-line drawing of a graph $G$ is a mapping which assigns to each vertex a point in the plane and to each edge a straight-line segment connecting the corresponding two points. The rectilinear crossing number of a graph $G$, $\overline{cr}(G)$, is the minimum number of crossing edges in any straight-line drawing of $G$. Determining or estimating $\overline{cr}(G)$ appears to be a difficult problem, and deciding if $\overline{cr}(G)\leq k$ is known to be NP-hard. In fact, the asymptotic behavior of $\overline{cr}(K_n)$ is still unknown. In this paper, we present a deterministic $n^{2+o(1…
The point sets of all known optimal rectilinear drawings of $K_n$ share an unmistakeable clustering property, the so--called {\em 3--decomposability}. It is widely believed that the underlying point sets of all optimal rectilinear drawings of $K_n$ are 3--decomposable. We give a lower bound for the minimum number of $(\le k)$--sets in a 3--decomposable $n$--point set. As an immediate corollary, we obtain a lower bound for the crossing number $\rcr(\dd)$ of any rectilinear drawing $\dd$ of $K_n$ with underlying 3--decomposable point set, namely $\rcr(\dd) > {2/27}(15-π^{2})\binom{n}{4}+Θ(n^{3})…
The crossing number cr(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of crossings in a nondegenerate planar drawing of G. The rectilinear crossing number cr'(G) of G is the minimum number of crossings in a rectilinear nondegenerate planar drawing (with edges as straight line segments) of G. Zarankiewicz proved in 1952 that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2})\le Z(n_1,n_2):= n_1/2*(n_1-1)/2*n_2/2*(n_2-1)/2. We define an analogous bound A(n_1,n_2,n_3) for the complete tripartite graph K_{n_1,n_2,n_3}, and prove that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2,n_3})\le A({n_1,n_2,n_3}). We also show that for n large enough, 0.973 A(n,n,n) \le cr'(K_{n…
In this paper, we consider the embedding of a complete $d$-uniform geometric hypergraph with $n$ vertices in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where each hyperedge is represented as a $(d-1)$-simplex, and a pair of hyperedges is defined to cross if they are vertex-disjoint and contains a common point in the relative interior of the simplices corresponding to them. As a corollary of the Van Kampen-Flores Theorem, it can be seen that such a hypergraph contains $Ω(\frac{2^d}{\sqrt{d}})$ $n\choose 2d$ crossing pairs of hyperedges. Using Gale Transform and Ham Sandwich Theorem, we improve this lo…
A rectilinear drawing of a graph $G$ is optimal if it has the smallest number of crossings among all rectilinear drawings of $G$. In this paper it is shown that for $n\geq 8$, the second convex hull of every optimal rectilinear drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ is a triangle.
Tree decompositions of graphs are of fundamental importance in structural and algorithmic graph theory. Planar decompositions generalise tree decompositions by allowing an arbitrary planar graph to index the decomposition. We prove that every graph that excludes a fixed graph as a minor has a planar decomposition with bounded width and a linear number of bags. The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. We prove that planar decompositions are intimately related to the crossing number. In particular, a graph with bounded degree has l…

We compute the Orchard crossing number, which is defined in a similar way to the rectilinear crossing number, for the complete bipartite graphs K_{n,n}.
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. Our main result is that every graph $G$ that does not contain a fixed graph as a minor has crossing number $O(Δn)$, where $G$ has $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$. This dependence on $n$ and $Δ$ is best possible. This result answers an open question of Wood and Telle [New York J. Mathematics, 2007], who proved the best previous bound of $O(Δ^2 n)$. We also study the convex and rectilinear crossing numbers, and prove an $O(Δn)$ bound for the convex crossing number of bounded pathwidth gr…
A drawing of a graph is {\em pseudolinear} if there is a pseudoline arrangement such that each pseudoline contains exactly one edge of the drawing. The {\em pseudolinear crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise crossings of edges in a pseudolinear drawing of $G$. We establish several facts on the pseudolinear crossing number, including its computational complexity and its relationship to the usual crossing number and to the rectilinear crossing number. This investigation was motivated by open questions and issues raised by Marcus Schaefer in his comprehensive survey of…
For positive integers $n$ and $e$, let $κ(n,e)$ be the minimum crossing number (the standard planar crossing number) taken over all graphs with $n$ vertices and at least $e$ edges. Pach, Spencer and Tóth [Discrete and Computational Geometry 24 623--644, (2000)] showed that $κ(n,e) n^2/e^3$ tends to a positive constant (called midrange crossing constant) as $n\to \infty$ and $n \ll e \ll n^2$, proving a conjecture of Erdős and Guy. In this note, we extend their proof to show that the midrange crossing constant exists for graph classes that satisfy a certain set of graph properties. As a corolla…
For a finite set $X$, we say that a set $H\subseteq X$ crosses a partition ${\cal P}=(X_1,\dots,X_k)$ of $X$ if $H$ intersects $\min (|H|,k)$ partition classes. If $|H|\geq k$, this means that $H$ meets all classes $X_i$, whilst for $|H|\leq k$ the elements of the crossing set $H$ belong to mutually distinct classes. A set system ${\cal H}$ crosses ${\cal P}$, if so does some $H\in {\cal H}$. The minimum number of $r$-element subsets, such that every $k$-partition of an $n$-element set $X$ is crossed by at least one of them, is denoted by $f(n,k,r)$. The problem of determining these minimum va…
The crossing number $cr(G)$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is the smallest number of edge crossings over all drawings of $G$ in the plane. For any $k\ge 1$, the $k$-planar crossing number of $G$, $cr_k(G)$, is defined as the minimum of $cr(G_0)+cr(G_1)+\ldots+cr(G_{k-1})$ over all graphs $G_0, G_1,\ldots, G_{k-1}$ with $\cup_{i=0}^{k-1}G_i=G$. It is shown that for every $k\ge 1$, we have $cr_k(G)\le \left(\frac{2}{k^2}-\frac1{k^3}\right)cr(G)$. This bound does not remain true if we replace the constant $\frac{2}{k^2}-\frac1{k^3}$ by any number smaller than $\frac1{k^2}$. Some of the results extend to th…
Consider a random geometric graph over a random point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Two points are connected by an edge if and only if their distance is bounded by a prescribed distance parameter. We show that projecting the graph onto a two dimensional plane is expected to yield a constant-factor crossing number (and rectilinear crossing number) approximation. We also show that the crossing number is positively correlated to the stress of the graph's projection.
The crossing number ${\mbox {cr}}(G)$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is the smallest number of edge crossings over all drawings of $G$ in the plane. For any $k\ge 1$, the $k$-planar crossing number of $G$, ${\mbox {cr}}_k(G)$, is defined as the minimum of ${\mbox {cr}}(G_1)+{\mbox {cr}}(G_2)+\ldots+{\mbox {cr}}(G_{k})$ over all graphs $G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_{k}$ with $\cup_{i=1}^{k}G_i=G$. Pach et al. [\emph{Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications} {\bf 68} 2--6, (2018)] showed that for every $k\ge 1$, we have ${\mbox {cr}}_k(G)\le \left(\frac{2}{k^2}-\frac1{k^3}\right){\mbox {cr}}(G)$ and that thi…
For $k\ge 3$ and $ε>0$, let $H$ be a $k$-partite $k$-graph with parts $V_1,\dots, V_k$ each of size $n$, where $n$ is sufficiently large. Assume that for each $i\in [k]$, every $(k-1)$-set in $\prod_{j\in [k]\setminus \{i\}} V_i$ lies in at least $a_i$ edges, and $a_1\ge a_2\ge \cdots \ge a_k$. We show that if $a_1, a_2\ge εn$, then $H$ contains a matching of size $\min\{n-1, \sum_{i\in [k]}a_i\}$. In particular, $H$ contains a matching of size $n-1$ if each crossing $(k-1)$-set lies in at least $\lceil n/k \rceil$ edges, or each crossing $(k-1)$-set lies in at least $\lfloor n/k \rfloor$ edge…

Around 1958, Hill described how to draw the complete graph $K_n$ with [Z(n) :=1/4\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}% \rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\rfloor] crossings, and conjectured that the crossing number $\crg (K_{n})$ of $K_n$ is exactly Z(n). This is also known as Guy's conjecture as he later popularized it. Towards the end of the century, substantially different drawings of $K_{n}$ with Z(n) crossings were found. These drawings are \emph{2-page book drawings}, that is, drawings where all the vertices are on a line $\ell$ (the spine) and each edg…
Let $P$ be a set of points in general position in the plane. Join all pairs of points in $P$ with straight line segments. The number of segment-crossings in such a drawing, denoted by $\crg(P)$, is the \emph{rectilinear crossing number} of $P$. A \emph{halving line} of $P$ is a line passing though two points of $P$ that divides the rest of the points of $P$ in (almost) half. The number of halving lines of $P$ is denoted by $h(P)$. Similarly, a $k$\emph{-edge}, $0\leq k\leq n/2-1$, is a line passing through two points of $P$ and leaving exactly $k$ points of $P$ on one side. The number of $(\le…
