The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role played by the anti-regular graph within the class of threshold graphs. Using the fact that every threshold graph contains a maximal anti-regular graph, we show that some known results, and new ones, on the spectral properties of threshold graphs can be deduced from (i) the known results on the eigenvalues of anti-regular graphs, (ii) the subgraph structure of threshold graphs, and (iii) eigenvalue interlacing. In particular, we prove a strengthened version of the recently proved fact that no threshold graph contains an eigenvalue in the interval $Ω= [\frac{-1-\sqrt{2}}{2},\frac{-1+\sqrt{2}}{2}]$, except possibly the trivial eigenvalues $-1$ and/or $0$, determine the inertia of a threshold graph, and give partial results on a conjecture regarding the optimality of the non-trivial eigenvalues of an anti-regular graph within the class of threshold graphs.
We prove that $G_{n,p=c/n}$ whp has a $k$-regular subgraph if $c$ is at least $e^{-Θ(k)}$ above the threshold for the appearance of a subgraph with minimum degree at least $k$; i.e. an non-empty $k$-core. In particular, this pins down the threshold for the appearance of a $k$-regular subgraph to a window of size $e^{-Θ(k)}$.
For graphs $G$ and $H$, we write $G \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow} H $ if any proper edge-coloring of $G$ contains a rainbow copy of $H$, i.e., a copy where no color appears more than once. Kohayakawa, Konstadinidis and the last author proved that the threshold for $G(n,p) \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow}H$ is at most $n^{-1/m_2(H)}$. Previous results have matched the lower bound for this anti-Ramsey threshold for cycles and complete graphs with at least 5 vertices. Kohayakawa, Konstadinidis and the last author also presented an infinite family of graphs $H$ for which the anti-Ra…
In 1960, Ghouila-Houri extended Dirac's theorem to directed graphs by proving that if D is a directed graph on n vertices with minimum out-degree and in-degree at least n/2 (i.e. minimum semi-degree at least n/2), then D contains a directed Hamiltonian cycle. Of course there are other orientations of a cycle in a directed graph and it is not clear that the semi-degree threshold for the directed Hamiltonian cycle is the same as the semi-degree threshold for some other orientation. In 1980, Grant initiated the problem of determining the minimum semi-degree threshold for the anti-directed Hamilto…
For graphs $G$ and $H$, let $G \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow} H$ denote the property that for every proper edge colouring of $G$ there is a rainbow copy of $H$ in $G$. Extending a result of Nenadov, Person, Škorić and Steger [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 124 (2017),1-38], we determine the threshold for $G(n,p) \overset{\mathrm{rb}}{\longrightarrow} C_\ell$ for cycles $C_\ell$ of any given length $\ell \geq 4$.
This paper examines the one-to-one-to-one correspondence between threshold graphs, Betti numbers of quotients of polynomial rings by $2$-linear ideals, and anti-lecture hall compositions. In particular, we establish new explicit combinatorial mappings between each of these classes of objects and calculate the expected values of the Betti numbers and anti-lecture hall composition corresponding to a random threshold graph.
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is antimagic if there is a one-to-one correspondence $f: E \to \{1,2,\ldots, |E|\}$ such that for any two vertices $u,v$, $\sum_{e \in E(u)}f(e) \ne \sum_{e\in E(v)}f(e)$. It is known that bipartite regular graphs are antimagic and non-bipartite regular graphs of odd degree at least three are antimagic. Whether all non-bipartite regular graphs of even degree are antimagic remained an open problem. In this paper, we solve this problem and prove that all even degree regular graphs are antimagic. The paper was submitted to December 2014 by Journal of Graph Theory.
Motivated by the conjecture of Hartsfield and Ringel on antimagic labelings of undirected graphs, Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz initiated the study of antimagic labelings of digraphs in 2010. Very recently, it has been conjectured in [Antimagic orientation of even regular graphs, J. Graph Theory, 90 (2019), 46-53.] that every graph admits an antimagtic orientation, which is a strengthening of an earlier conjecture of Hefetz, Mütze and Schwartz. In this paper, we prove that every $2d$-regular graph (not necessarily connected) admits an antimagic orientation, where $d\ge2$. Together with known res…
For graphs $G$ and $H$, let $G {\displaystyle\smash{\begin{subarray}{c} \hbox{$\tiny\rm rb$} \\ \longrightarrow \\ \hbox{$\tiny\rm p$} \end{subarray}}}H$ denote the property that for every proper edge-colouring of $G$ there is a rainbow $H$ in $G$. It is known that, for every graph $H$, an asymptotic upper bound for the threshold function $p^{\rm rb}_H=p^{\rm rb}_H(n)$ of this property for the random graph $G(n,p)$ is $n^{-1/m^{(2)}(H)}$, where $m^{(2)}(H)$ denotes the so-called maximum $2$-density of $H$. Extending a result of Nenadov, Person, Škorić, and Steger [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 124 …
We characterize the graphs with loops whose degree sequences have no repeated values and find their adjacency spectrum. In the case of simple graphs, such graphs are called anti-regular graphs and are examples of threshold graphs. The spectrum is found by using the known relationship between tridiagonal matrices and orthogonal polynomials.
Let $Γ$ be a distance-regular graph with diameter $d$ and Kneser graph $K=Γ_d$, the distance-$d$ graph of $Γ$. We say that $Γ$ is partially antipodal when $K$ has fewer distinct eigenvalues than $Γ$. In particular, this is the case of antipodal distance-regular graphs ($K$ with only two distinct eigenvalues), and the so-called half-antipodal distance-regular graphs ($K$ with only one negative eigenvalue). We provide a characterization of partially antipodal distance-regular graphs (among regular graphs with $d$ distinct eigenvalues) in terms of the spectrum and the mean number of vertices at m…
A $labeling$ of a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$. A labeling of $D$ is $antimagic$ if no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u \in V(D)$ for a labeling is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. An antimagic orientation $D$ of a graph $G$ is $antimagic$ if $D$ has an antimagic labeling. Hefetz, M$\ddot{u}$tze and Schwartz in [J. Graph Theory 64(2010)219-232] raised the question: Does every graph admits an antimagic orientation? It had been …
The $k$-core of a graph is the largest subgraph of minimum degree at least $k$. We show that for $k$ sufficiently large, the $(k + 2)$-core of a random graph $\G(n,p)$ asymptotically almost surely has a spanning $k$-regular subgraph. Thus the threshold for the appearance of a $k$-regular subgraph of a random graph is at most the threshold for the $(k+2)$-core. In particular, this pins down the point of appearance of a $k$-regular subgraph in $\G(n,p)$ to a window for $p$ of width roughly $2/n$ for large $n$ and moderately large $k$.
An antimagic labeling of a graph $G$ with $m$ edges is a bijection from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$ such that for all vertices $u$ and $v$, the sum of labels on edges incident to $u$ differs from that for edges incident to $v$. Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every connected graph other than the single edge $K_2$ has an antimagic labeling. We prove this conjecture for regular graphs of odd degree.
Let $\mathcal{G}(n,r,s)$ denote a uniformly random $r$-regular $s$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, where $s$ is a fixed constant and $r=r(n)$ may grow with $n$. An $\ell$-overlapping Hamilton cycle is a Hamilton cycle in which successive edges overlap in precisely $\ell$ vertices, and 1-overlapping Hamilton cycles are called loose Hamilton cycles. When $r,s\geq 3$ are fixed integers, we establish a threshold result for the property of containing a loose Hamilton cycle. This partially verifies a conjecture of Dudek, Frieze, Rucinski and Sileikis (2015). In this setting, we also find the asy…
An \emph{antimagic labeling} of a finite undirected simple graph with $m$ edges and $n$ vertices is a bijection from the set of edges to the integers $1,...,m$ such that all $n$ vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where a vertex sum is the sum of labels of all edges incident with the same vertex. A graph is called \emph{antimagic} if it has an antimagic labeling. In 1990, Hartsfield and Ringel \cite{HaRi} conjectured that every simple connected graph, but $K_2$, is antimagic. In this article, we prove that a new class of Cartesian product graphs are antimagic. In addition, by combining this res…
A labeling of a graph is a bijection from $E(G)$ to the set $\{1, 2,..., |E(G)|\}$. A labeling is \textit{antimagic} if for any distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, the sum of the labels on edges incident to $u$ is different from the sum of the labels on edges incident to $v$. We say a graph is antimagic if it has an antimagic labeling. In 1990, Ringel conjectured that every connected graph other than $K_2$ is antimagic. In this paper, we show that every regular bipartite graph (with degree at least 2) is antimagic. Our technique relies heavily on the Marriage Theorem.
A labeling of a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1, \ldots, m\}$. A labeling of $D$ is antimagic if no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u\in V(D)$ for a labeling is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. Motivated by the conjecture of Hartsfield and Ringel from 1990 on antimagic labelings of graphs, Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz [On antimagic directed graphs, J Graph Theory 64 (2010) 219--232] initiated the study of antimagic labelings of digraphs, and con…
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a connected simple graph of order $p$ and size $q$. A graph $G$ is called local antimagic if $G$ admits a local antimagic labeling. A bijection $f : E \to \{1,2,\ldots,q\}$ is called a local antimagic labeling of $G$ if for any two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$, we have $f^+(u) \ne f^+(v)$, where $f^+(u) = \sum_{e\in E(u)} f(e)$, and $E(u)$ is the set of edges incident to $u$. Thus, any local antimagic labeling induces a proper vertex coloring of $G$ if vertex $v$ is assigned the color $f^+(v)$. The local antimagic chromatic number, denoted $χ_{la}(G)$, is the minimum number…
Graph labeling is a well-known and intensively investigated problem in graph theory. Sparse anti-magic squares are useful in constructing vertex-magic labeling for graphs. For positive integers $n,d$ and $d<n$, an $n\times n$ array $A$ based on $\{0,1,\cdots,nd\}$ is called \emph{a sparse anti-magic square of order $n$ with density $d$}, denoted by SAMS$(n,d)$, if each element of $\{1,2,\cdots,nd\}$ occurs exactly one entry of $A$, and its row-sums, column-sums and two main diagonal sums constitute a set of $2n+2$ consecutive integers. An SAMS$(n,d)$ is called \emph{regular} if there are exact…
We prove that the property of containing a $k$-regular subgraph in the random graph model $G(n,p)$ has a sharp threshold for $k\ge3$. We also show how to use similar methods to obtain an easy prove for the (known fact of) sharpness of having a non empty $k$-core for $k\ge3$.
Let $d\geq 3$ be a constant and let $F$ be a $d$-regular graph on $[n]$ with not too many symmetries. By the union bound, the probability threshold for the existence of a spanning subgraph in $G(n,p)$ isomorphic to $F$ is at least $p^*(n)=(1+o(1))(e/n)^{2/d}$. We give a tight bound on the edge expansion of $F$ guaranteeing that the probability threshold for the appearance of a copy of $F$ has the same order of magnitude as $p^*$. We also prove that, within a slight strengthening of this bound, the probability threshold is asymptotically equal to $p^*$. In particular, it proves the conjecture o…
We consider the regular model of formula generation in conjunctive normal form (CNF) introduced by Boufkhad et. al. We derive an upper bound on the satisfiability threshold and NAE-satisfiability threshold for regular random $k$-SAT for any $k \geq 3$. We show that these bounds matches with the corresponding bound for the uniform model of formula generation. We derive lower bound on the threshold by applying the second moment method to the number of satisfying assignments. For large $k$, we note that the obtained lower bounds on the threshold of a regular random formula converges to the lower …
In \emph{$k$-bootstrap percolation}, we fix $p\in (0,1)$, an integer $k$, and a plane graph $G$. Initially, we infect each face of $G$ independently with probability $p$. Infected faces remain infected forever, and if a healthy (uninfected) face has at least $k$ infected neighbors, then it becomes infected. For fixed $G$ and $p$, the \emph{percolation threshold} is the largest $k$ such that eventually all faces become infected, with probability at least $1/2$. For a large class of infinite graphs, we show that this threshold is independent of $p$. We consider bootstrap percolation in tilings o…
Consider the following model of strong-majority bootstrap percolation on a graph. Let r be some positive integer, and p in [0,1]. Initially, every vertex is active with probability p, independently from all other vertices. Then, at every step of the process, each vertex v of degree deg(v) becomes active if at least (deg(v)+r)/2 of its neighbours are active. Given any arbitrarily small p>0 and any integer r, we construct a family of d=d(p,r)-regular graphs such that with high probability all vertices become active in the end. In particular, the case r=1 answers a question and disproves a conjec…
The Ising antiferromagnet is an important statistical physics model with close connections to the {\sc Max Cut} problem. Combining spatial mixing arguments with the method of moments and the interpolation method, we pinpoint the replica symmetry breaking phase transition predicted by physicists. Additionally, we rigorously establish upper bounds on the {\sc Max Cut} of random regular graphs predicted by Zdeborová and Boettcher [Journal of Statistical Mechanics 2010]. As an application we prove that the information-theoretic threshold of the disassortative stochastic block model on random regul…
