The Lagrangian approach is natural to study issues of turbulent dispersion and mixing. We propose in this work a general Lagrangian stochastic model including velocity and acceleration as dynamical variables for inhomogeneous turbulent flows. The model takes the form of a diffusion process and the coefficients of the model are determined via Kolmogorov theory and the requirement of consistency with the velocity-based models. It is shown that the present model generalises both the acceleration-based models for homogeneous flows and the generalised Langevin models for the velocity. The resulting closed model is applied to a channel flow at high Reynolds number and compared to experiments as well as direct numerical simulations. A hybrid approach coupling the stochastic model with a Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) is used to obtain a self-consistent model, as commonly used in probability density function methods. Results highlight that most of the acceleration features are well represented, notably the anisotropy and the strong intermittency. These results are valuable, since the model allows to improve the modelling of boundary layers yet remaining relatively simple. It sheds also some light on the statistical mechanisms at play in the near-wall region.
Passive scalar mixing, produced by Lagrangian chaos generated a) by quasi-periodic (integrable) motion of three quasi-point vortices and b) by chaotic motion of three and six quasi-point vortices, has been studied and compared with turbulent mixing of passive scalar in 2D and 3D steady isotropic homogeneous turbulence and in turbulent wakes behind grid and behind cylinder. Results of numerical and laboratory experiments have been used and effective diffusivity approximation as well as distributed chaos approach have been applied to this problem.
The statistics of Lagrangian particles in turbulent flows is considered in the framework of a simple vortex model. Here, the turbulent velocity field is represented by a temporal sequence of Burgers vortices of different circulation, strain, and orientation. Based on suitable assumptions about the vortices' statistical properties, the statistics of the velocity increments is derived. In particular, the origin and nature of small-scale intermittency in this model is investigated both numerically and analytically.
A closure theory is developed for inhomogeneous turbulent flow, which enables a systematic derivation of the turbulence constitutive relations without relying on any empirical parameters. Renormalized-perturbation approximation is performed in the convective coordinate frame based on the mean flow, successfully incorporating the convective integration in generally covariant manner.
We outline a statistical theory of turbulence based on the Lagrangian formulation of fluid motion. We derive a hierarchy of evolution equations for Lagrangian N-point probability distributions as well as a functional equation for a suitably defined probability functional which is the analog of Hopf's functional equation. Furthermore, we adress the derivation of a generalized Fokker-Plank equation for the joint velocity - position probability density of N fluid particles.
In this paper, we employ Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) theory for the three dimensional vortex eduction and investigate the effect of large-scale vortical structures on the turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) and entrainment of a gravity current. The gravity current is realized experimentally and different levels of stratification are examined. For flow measurements, we use a multivolume three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry technique. To identify vortical LCSs (VLCSs), a fully automated 3D extraction algorithm for multiple flow structures based on the so-called Lagrangi…
We present Lagrangian one-particle statistics from the Risoe PTV experiment of a turbulent flow. We estimate the Lagrangian Kolmogorov constant $C_0$ and find that it is affected by the large scale inhomogeneities of the flow. The pdf of temporal velocity increments are highly non-Gaussian for small times which we interpret as a consequence of intermittency. Using Extended Self-Similarity we manage to quantify the intermittency and find that the deviations from Kolmogorov 1941 similarity scaling is larger in the Lagrangian framework than in the Eulerian. Through the multifractal model we calcu…
Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a closed cylindrical cell is studied in the Lagrangian frame of reference with the help of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The aspect ratio of the cell Gamma is varied between 1 and 12, and the Rayleigh number Ra between 10^7 and 10^9. The Prandtl number Pr is fixed at 0.7. It is found that both the pair dispersion of the Lagrangian tracer particles and the statistics of the acceleration components measured along the particle trajectories depend on the aspect ratio for a fixed Rayleigh number for the parameter range covered in our studies…
Being able to accurately model and predict the dynamics of dispersed inclusions transported by a turbulent flow, remains a challenge with important scientific, environmental and economical issues. One critical and difficult point is to correctly describe the dynamics of particles over a wide range of sizes and densities. Our measurements show that acceleration statistics of particles dispersed in a turbulent flow do exhibit specific size and density effects but that they preserve an extremely robust turbulent signature with lognormal fluctuations, regardless of particles size and density. This…
A temporal complex network-based approach is proposed as a novel formulation to investigate turbulent mixing from a Lagrangian viewpoint. By exploiting a spatial proximity criterion, the dynamics of a set of fluid particles is geometrized into a time-varying weighted network. Specifically, a numerically solved turbulent channel flow is employed as an exemplifying case. We show that the time-varying network is able to clearly describe the particle swarm dynamics, in a parametrically robust and computationally inexpensive way. The network formalism enables to straightforwardly identify transient…
We investigate the Lagrangian statistics of three-dimensional rotating turbulent flows through direct numerical simulations. We find that the emergence of coherent vortical structures because of the Coriolis force leads to a suppression of the "flight-crash" events reported by Xu, et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. (U.S.A) 111, 7558 (2014)]. We perform systematic studies to trace the origins of this suppression in the emergent geometry of the flow and show why such a Lagrangian measure of irreversibility may fail in the presence of rotation.
We investigate the utility of the convex hull of many Lagrangian tracers to analyze transport properties of turbulent flows with different anisotropy. In direct numerical simulations of statistically homogeneous and stationary Navier-Stokes turbulence, neutral fluid Boussinesq convection, and MHD Boussinesq convection a comparison with Lagrangian pair dispersion shows that convex hull statistics capture the asymptotic dispersive behavior of a large group of passive tracer particles. Moreover, convex hull analysis provides additional information on the sub-ensemble of tracers that on average di…
Lagrangian acceleration statistics in a fully developed turbulent channel flow at $Re_τ= 1440$ are investigated, based on tracer particle tracking in experiments and direct numerical simulations. The evolution with wall distance of the Lagrangian velocity and acceleration time scales is analyzed. Dependency between acceleration components in the near-wall region is described using cross-correlations and joint probability density functions. The strong streamwise coherent vortices typical of wall-bounded turbulent flows are shown to have a significant impact on the dynamics. This results in a st…
We report experimental results on the three dimensional Lagrangian acceleration in highly turbulent flows. Tracer particles are tracked optically using four silicon strip detectors from high energy physics that provide high temporal and spatial resolution. The components of the acceleration are shown to be statistically dependent. The probability density function (PDF) of the acceleration magnitude is comparable to a log-normal distribution. Assuming isotropy, a log-normal distribution of the magnitude can account for the observed dependency of the components. The time dynamics of the accelera…
The motility of microorganisms is often biased by gradients in physical and chemical properties of their environment, with myriad implications on their ecology. Here we show that fluid acceleration reorients gyrotactic plankton, triggering small-scale clustering. We experimentally demonstrate this phenomenon by studying the distribution of the phytoplankton Chlamydomonas augustae within a rotating tank and find it to be in good agreement with a new, generalized model of gyrotaxis. When this model is implemented in a direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow, we find that fluid acceleration…
We present a comparison of different particles' velocity and acceleration statistics in two paradigmatic turbulent swirling flows: the von Kármán flow in a laboratory experiment, and the Taylor-Green flow in direct numerical simulations. Tracers, as well as inertial particles, are considered. Results indicate that, in spite of the differences in boundary conditions and forcing mechanisms, scaling properties and statistical quantities reveal similarities between both flows, pointing to new methods to calibrate and compare models for particles dynamics in numerical simulations, as well as to cha…
We investigate the response of large inertial particle to turbulent fluctuations in a inhomogeneous and anisotropic flow. We conduct a Lagrangian study using particles both heavier and lighter than the surrounding fluid, and whose diameters are comparable to the flow integral scale. Both velocity and acceleration correlation functions are analyzed to compute the Lagrangian integral time and the acceleration time scale of such particles. The knowledge of how size and density affect these time scales is crucial in understanding partical dynamics and may permit stochastic process modelization usi…
We report on the Lagrangian statistics of acceleration of small (sub-Kolmogorov) bubbles and tracer particles with Stokes number St << 1 in turbulent flow. At decreasing Reynolds number, the bubble accelerations show deviations from that of tracer particles, i.e. they deviate from the Heisenberg-Yaglom prediction and show a quicker decorrelation despite their small size and minute St. Using direct numerical simulations, we show that these effects arise due the drift of these particles through the turbulent flow. We theoretically predict this gravity-driven effect for developed isotropic turbul…
The statistical properties of the Lagrangian acceleration vector of passive tracers in statistically-steady rotating turbulence is studied by Particle Tracking Velocimetry. Direct effects of the background rotation are the suppression of high-acceleration events parallel to the (vertical) rotation axis, the enhancement of high-acceleration events for the horizontal acceleration, and the strong amplification of the auto-correlation of the acceleration component perpendicular to both the rotation vector Ω and local velocity vector u. The auto-correlation of the acceleration component in the plan…
A Lagrangian experimental study of an axisymmetric turbulent water jet is performed to investigate the highly anisotropic and inhomogeneous flow field. The measurements were conducted within a Lagrangian exploration module, an icosahedron apparatus, to facilitate optical access of three cameras. The stereoscopic particle tracking velocimetry results in three component tracks of position, velocity and acceleration of the tracer particles within the vertically-oriented jet with a Taylor-based Reynolds number $\mathcal R_λ\simeq 230$. Analysis is performed at seven locations from 15 diameters up …
Particles in turbulence frequently encounter extreme accelerations between extended periods of quiescence. The occurrence of extreme events is closely related to the intermittent spatial distribution of intense flow structures such as vorticity filaments. This mixed history of flow conditions leads to very complex particle statistics with a pronounced scale dependence, which presents one of the major challenges on the way to a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of turbulence. Here, we introduce the notion of persistent Lagrangian acceleration, quantified by the squared particle acceleration…
We report joint Lagrangian velocity and temperature measurements in turbulent thermal convection. Measurements are performed using an improved version (extended autonomy) of the neutrally-buoyant instrumented particle that was used by to performed experiments in a parallelepipedic Rayleigh-Benard cell. The temperature signal is obtained from a RFtransmitter. Simultaneously, we determine particle's position and velocity with one camera, which grants access to the Lagrangian heat flux. Due to the extended autonomy of the present particle, we obtain well converged temperature and velocity statist…
Spatial regions that do not mix effectively with their surroundings and thus contribute less to the heat transport in fully turbulent three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard flows are identified by Lagrangian trajectories that stay together for a longer time. These trajectories probe Lagrangian coherent sets (CS) which we investigate here in direct numerical simulations in convection cells with square cross section of aspect ratio $Γ= 16$, Rayleigh number $Ra = 10^{5}$, and Prandtl numbers $Pr = 0.1, 0.7$ and $7$. The analysis is based on $N=524,288$ Lagrangian tracer particles which are advected in…
The dynamics of particles in turbulence when the particle-size is larger than the dissipative scale of the carrier flow is studied. Recent experiments have highlighted signatures of particles finiteness on their statistical properties, namely a decrease of their acceleration variance, an increase of correlation times -at increasing the particles size- and an independence of the probability density function of the acceleration once normalized to their variance. These effects are not captured by point particle models. By means of a detailed comparison between numerical simulations and experiment…
Conditional statistics of homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow is investigated by means of high-Reynolds number direct numerical simulations performed with $2048^3$ collocation points. Eulerian as well as Lagrangian velocity increment statistics under several conditions are analyzed and compared. In agreement with experimental data longitudinal probability density functions $P(δ^{||}_l u|ε_l)$ conditioned on a scale-averaged energy dissipation rate are close to Gaussian distributions over all scales within the inertial range of scales. Also transverse increments conditioned on either the dissi…
We analyze large-scale patterns in three-dimensional turbulent convection in a horizontally extended square convection cell by Lagrangian particle trajectories calculated in direct numerical simulations. A simulation run at a Prandtl number Pr $=0.7$, a Rayleigh number Ra $=10^5$, and an aspect ratio $Γ=16$ is therefore considered. These large-scale structures, which are denoted as turbulent superstructures of convection, are detected by the spectrum of the graph Laplacian matrix. Our investigation, which follows Hadjighasem {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 93}, 063107 (2016), builds a weighted…
The present paper seeks to determine the mechanism of flame acceleration and transition to detonation when a turbulent flame preceded by a shock interacts with a single obstruction in its path, taken as a cylindrical obstacle or a wall in the present study. The problem is addressed experimentally in a mixture of propane-oxygen at sub-atmospheric conditions. The turbulent flame was generated by passing a detonation wave through a perforated plate, yielding flames with turbulent burning velocities 10 to 20 larger than the laminar values and incident shock Mach numbers ranging between 2 and 2.5. …
The Eulerian-Lagrangian approach based on Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) is one of the most promising and viable numerical tools to study turbulent dispersed flows when the computational cost of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) becomes too expensive. The applicability of this approach is however limited if the effects of the Sub-Grid Scales (SGS) of the flow on particle dynamics are neglected. In this paper, we propose to take these effects into account by means of a Lagrangian stochastic SGS model for the equations of particle motion. The model extends to particle-laden flows the velocity-filte…
We investigate the ability of 4D Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements at high particle density to explore intermittency and irreversibility in a turbulent swirling flow at various Reynolds numbers. For this, we devise suitable tools to remove the experimental noise, and compute the statistics of both Lagrangian velocity increments and wavelet coefficients of the Lagrangian power (the time derivative of the kinetic energy along a trajectory). We show that the signature of noise is strongest on short trajectories, and results in deviations from the regularity condition at small time scales…
High-speed stereo PIV-measurements have been performed in a turbulent boundary layer at Re$_θ$ of 9800 in order to elucidate the coherent structures. Snapshot proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) are used to visualize the flow structure depending on the turbulent kinetic energy and frequency content. The first six POD and DMD modes show the largest and the lowest amount of energy and frequency, respectively. Lagrangian coherent structure (LCS) based on the algorithm developed using the variational theory is also applied to track the flow via attracting and…
Due to large scale flow inhomogeneities and the effects of temperature, turbulence small-scale structure in thermal convection is still an active field of investigation, especially considering sophisticated Lagrangian statistics. Here we experimentally study Lagrangian pair dispersion (one of the canonical problems of Lagrangian turbulence) in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell. A sufficiently high temperature difference is imposed on a horizontal layer of fluid to observe a turbulent flow. We perform Lagrangian tracking of sub-millimetric particles on a large measurement volume including part …
A simple analytical solution for turbulent plane Couette flow is obtained from a subset of the Navier-Stokes equations. This approach analyses the effect of the unsteady state Lagrangian diffusion of viscous momentum on the smoothed phase velocity. Three initial velocity profiles at the start of a turbulent wall cycle are considered. The predictions adequate identify the existence of three layers usually observed in turbulent flow fields, in particular a viscosity dominated wall layer and a log-law layer. Experimental measurements of time-averaged velocity are also well correlated. Key words: …
Inertial particles in turbulent flows are characterised by preferential concentration and segregation and, at sufficient mass loading, dense particle clusters may spontaneously arise due to momentum coupling between the phases. These clusters, in turn, can generate and sustain turbulence in the fluid phase, which we refer to as cluster-induced turbulence. In the present theoretical work, we tackle the problem of developing a framework for the stochastic modelling of moderately dense particle-laden flows, based on a Lagrangian formalism, which naturally includes the Eulerian one. A rigorous for…
The Lagrangian (LA) and Eulerian Acceleration (EA) properties of fluid particles in homogeneous turbulence with uniform shear and uniform stable stratification are studied using direct numerical simulations. The Richardson number is varied from $Ri=0$, corresponding to unstratified shear flow, to $Ri=1$, corresponding to strongly stratified shear flow. The probability density functions (pdfs) of both LA and EA have a stretched-exponential shape and they show a strong and similar influence on the Richardson number. The extreme values of the EA are stronger than those observed for the LA. Geomet…
We study the time evolution of velocity and pressure gradients in isotropic turbulence, by quantifying their decorrelation time scales as one follows fluid particles in the flow. The Lagrangian analysis uses data in a public database generated using direct numerical simulation of the Naiver-Stokes equations, at a Reynolds number 430. It is confirmed that when averaging over the entire domain, correlation functions decay on timescales on the order of the mean Kolmogorov turnover time scale, computed from the globally averaged rate of dissipation and viscosity. However, when performing the analy…
We propose a predictive model of the turbulent burning velocity $S_T$ in homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) based on Lagrangian statistics of propagating surfaces. The propagating surfaces with a constant displacement speed are initially arranged on a plane, and they evolve in non-reacting HIT, behaving like the propagation of a planar premixed flame front. The universal constants in the model of $S_T$ characterize the enhancement of area growth of premixed flames by turbulence, and they are determined by Lagrangian statistics of propagating surfaces. The flame area is then modelled by the…
We investigate the statistics of orientation of small, neutrally buoyant, spherical tracers whose center of mass is displaced from the geometrical center. If appropriate-sized particles are considered, a linear relation can be derived between the horizontal components of the orientation vector and the same components of acceleration. Direct numerical simulations are carried out, showing that such relation can be used to reconstruct the statistics of acceleration fluctuations up to the order of the gravitational acceleration. Based on such results, we suggest a novel method for the local experi…
We report experimental measurements of Lagrangian accelerations in the bulk of intense turbulent flows of dilute polymer solutions by following tracer particles with a high-speed optical tracking system. We observed a significant decrease in the acceleration variance in dilute polymer solutions. The shape of the normalized acceleration probability density functions, however, remain the same as in Newtonian water flows. We also observed an increase in the turbulent Lagrangian acceleration autocorrelation time in these dilute polymer solutions.
In an article on statistical modelling of turbulent relative dispersion, Franzese & Cassiani (2007, p. 402) commented on Lagrangian stochastic models and reported some concern about the consistency between statisti- cal and stochastic modelling of turbulent dispersion. In this short article, comparison of the two approaches is performed. As far as the dependence of models from turbulence constants is concerned, the two theoretical ap- proaches are found to be in perfect agreement eliminating every possible concern.
For the phenomenological description of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence competing models exist, e.g. Boldyrev [Phys.Rev.Lett. \textbf{96}, 115002, 2006] and Gogoberidze [Phys.Plas. \textbf{14}, 022304, 2007], which predict the same Eulerian inertial-range scaling of the turbulent energy spectrum although they employ fundamentally different basic interaction mechanisms. {A relation is found that links} the Lagrangian frequency spectrum {with} the autocorrelation timescale of the turbulent fluctuations, $τ_\mathrm{ac}$, and the associated cascade timescale, $τ_{\mathrm{cas}}$. Thus, the Lagrangia…
In a recent paper we presented evidence for the occurence of Leray-like singularities with positive Sedov-Taylor exponent $α$ in turbulent flows recorded in Modane's wind tunnel, by looking at simultaneous acceleration and velocity records. Here we use another tool which allows to get other informations on the dynamics of turbulent bursts. We compare the structure functions for velocity and acceleration in the same turbulent flows. This shows the possible contribution of other types of self-similar solutions because this new study shows that statistics is seemingly dominated by singularities w…
In this paper, we establish a set of criteria which are applied to discuss various formulations under which Lagrangian stochastic models can be found. These models are used for the simulation of fluid particles in single-phase turbulence as well as for the fluid seen by discrete particles in dispersed turbulent two-phase flows. A central issue is to put forward reliable requirements which must be met by Lagrangian stochastic models and a new element brought by the present analysis is to address the single- and two-phase flow situations from a unified point of view. This analysis does not addres…
The Lagrangian view of passive scalar turbulence has recently produced interesting results and interpretations. Innovations in theory, experiments, simulations and data analysis of Lagrangian turbulence are reviewed here in brief. Part of the review is closely related to the so-called Kraichnan model for the advection of the passive scalar in synthetic turbulence. Possible implications for a better understanding of the passive scalar mixing in Navier-Stokes turbulence are also discussed.
We establish an hitherto hidden connection between zero modes and instantons in the context of the Kraichanan model for passive scalar turbulent advection, that relies on the hypothesis that the production of strong gradients of the scalar is associated with Bose-like condensation of Lagrangian particles. It opens the way to the computation of scaling exponents of the N-th order structure functions of the scalar by techniques borrowed from many-body theory. To lowest order of approximation, scaling exponents are found to increase asymptotically as log N in two dimensions.
The Lagrangian point of view is adopted to study turbulent premixed combustion. The evolution of the volume fraction of combustion products is established by the Reynolds transport theorem. It emerges that the burned-mass fraction is led by the turbulent particle motion, by the flame front velocity, and by the mean curvature of the flame front. A physical requirement connecting particle turbulent dispersion and flame front velocity is obtained from equating the expansion rates of the flame front progression and of the unburned particles spread. The resulting description compares favorably with…
The motion of a large, neutrally buoyant, particle, freely advected by a turbulent flow is determined experimentally. We demonstrate that both the translational and angular accelerations exhibit very wide probability distributions, a manifestation of intermittency. The orientation of the angular velocity with respect to the trajectory, as well as the translational acceleration conditioned on the spinning velocity provide evidence of a lift force acting on the particle.
In this paper, a new formalism for the filtered density function (FDF) approach is developed for the treatment of turbulent polydispersed two-phase flows in LES simulations. Contrary to the FDF used for turbulent reactive single-phase flows, the present formalislm is based on Lagrangian quantities and, in particular, on the Lagrangian filtered mass density function (LFMDF) as the central concept. This framework allows modeling and simulation of particle flows for LES to be set in a rigorous context and various links with other approaches to be made. In particular, the relation between LES for …
We report experimental results on the acceleration component probability distribution function at $R_λ= 690$ to probabilities of less than $10^{-7}$. This is an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over past measurements and allows us to conclude that the fourth moment converges and the flatness is approximately 55. We compare our probability distribution to those predicted by several models inspired by non-extensive statistical mechanics. We also look at acceleration component probability distributions conditioned on a velocity component for conditioning velocities as high as 3 time…
The purpose of this paper is to examine the Lagrangian stochastic modeling of the fluid velocity seen by inertial particles in a nonhomogeneous turbulent flow. A new Langevin-type model, compatible with the transport equation of the drift velocity in the limits of low and high particle inertia, is derived. It is also shown that some previously proposed stochastic models are not compatible with this transport equation in the limit of high particle inertia. The drift and diffusion parameters of these stochastic differential equations are then estimated using direct numerical simulation (DNS) dat…
We show that the probability densities af accelerations of Lagrangian test particles in turbulent flows as measured by Bodenschatz et al. [Nature 409, 1017 (2001)] are in excellent agreement with the predictions of a stochastic model introduced in [C. Beck, PRL 87, 180601 (2001)] if the fluctuating friction parameter is assumed to be log-normally distributed. In a generalized statistical mechanics setting, this corresponds to a superstatistics of log-normal type. We analytically evaluate all hyperflatnes factors for this model and obtain a flatness prediction in good agreement with the experim…
Coherent circulation rolls and their relevance for the turbulent heat transfer in a two-dimensional Rayleigh--Bénard convection model are analyzed. The flow is in a closed cell of aspect ratio four at a Rayleigh number ${\rm Ra}=10^6$ and at a Prandtl number ${\rm Pr}=10$. Three different Lagrangian analysis techniques based on graph Laplacians -- distance spectral trajectory clustering, time-averaged diffusion maps and finite-element based dynamic Laplacian discretization -- are used to monitor the turbulent fields along trajectories of massless Lagrangian particles in the evolving turbulent …
We use an acoustic Lagrangian tracking technique, particularly adapted to measurements in open flows, and a versatile material particles generator (in the form of soap bubbles with adjustable size and density) to characterize Lagrangian statistics of finite sized, neutrally bouyant, particles transported in an isotropic turbulent flow of air. We vary the size of the particles in a range corresponding to turbulent inertial scales and explore how the turbulent forcing experienced by the particles depends on their size. We show that, while the global shape of the intermittent acceleration probabi…
