Planned CMB Stage IV experiments have the potential to measure the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom in the early Universe, $N_\text{eff}$, with percent-level accuracy. This probes new thermalized light particles and also constrains possible new-physics interactions of Dirac neutrinos. Many Dirac-neutrino models that aim to address the Dirac stability, the smallness of neutrino masses or the matter--anti-matter asymmetry of our Universe endow the right-handed chirality partners $ν_R$ with additional interactions that can thermalize them. Unless the reheating temperature of our Universe was low, this leads to testable deviations in $N_\text{eff}$. We discuss well-motivated models for $ν_R$ interactions such as gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ and the neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet model, and compare the sensitivity of SPT-3G, Simons Observatory, and CMB-S4 to other experiments, in particular the LHC.
We consider the possibility of probing left-right symmetric model (LRSM) via cosmic microwave background (CMB). We adopt the minimal LRSM with Higgs doublets, also known as the doublet left-right model (DLRM), where all fermions including the neutrinos acquire masses only via their couplings to the Higgs bidoublet. Due to the Dirac nature of light neutrinos, there exist additional relativistic degrees of freedom which can thermalise in the early universe by virtue of their gauge interactions corresponding to the right sector. We constrain the model from Planck 2018 bound on the effective relat…
Cosmological models where the standard big bang is replaced by a bounce have been studied for decades. The situation has, however, dramatically changed in the past years for two reasons: first, because new ways to probe the early Universe have emerged, in particular, thanks to the cosmic microwave background, and second, because some well grounded theories -especially loop quantum cosmology- unambiguously predict a bounce, at least for homogeneous models. In this article, we investigate into the details the phenomenological parameters that could be constrained or measured by next-generation B-…
Observing dark energy dynamics is the most important aspect of the dark energy research. In this paper we perform an analysis of the constraints on the property of dark energy from the current astronomical observations. We pay particular attention to the effects of dark energy perturbations. Using the data from SNIa (157 "gold" sample), WMAP and SDSS we find that the best fitting dark energy model is given by the dynamical model with the equation of state across -1. Nevertheless the standard \LambdaCDM models are still a very good fit to the current data and evidence for dynamics is currently …
We propose a novel scheme for distinguishing between the Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrinos via interaction of a neutrino beam with microwave photons inside a cavity. We study the effective photon-photon polarization exchange induced by the photon-neutrino scattering. The quantum field theoretical studies of such effective picture are presented for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. Our phenomenological analyses show that the difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can manifest itself in scattering rate of the photons. To enhance the effect a cavity scheme is employed. An experimen…
The existence of prolonged radiation domination prior to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), starting just after the inflationary epoch, is not yet established unanimously. If instead, the universe undergoes a non-standard cosmological phase, it will alter the Hubble expansion rate significantly and may also generate substantial entropy through non-adiabatic evolution. This leads to a thumping impact on the properties of relic species decoupled from the thermal bath before the revival of the standard radiation domination in the vicinity of the BBN. In this work, considering the Dirac nature of…
If dark matter consists of cold, neutral particles with a non-zero magnetic moment, then, in the presence of an external magnetic field, a measurable gyromagnetic Faraday effect becomes possible. This enables direct constraints on the nature and distribution of such dark matter through detailed measurements of the polarization and temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation.
In this paper we show that dark matter in the form of dense matter/antimatter nuggets could provide a natural and unified explanation for several distinct bands of diffuse radiation from the core of the Galaxy spanning over 12 orders of magnitude in frequency. We fix all of the phenomenological properties of this model by matching to x-ray observations in the keV band, and then calculate the unambiguously predicted thermal emission in the microwave band, at frequencies smaller by 10 orders of magnitude. Remarkably, the intensity and spectrum of the emitted thermal radiation are consistent with…
We examine the constraints cosmological observations can place on any trans-Planckian corrections to the primordial spectrum of perturbations underlying the anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background. We focus on models of trans-Planckian physics which lead to a modulated primordial spectrum. Rather than looking at a generic modulated spectrum, our calculations are based on a specific model, and are intended as a case study for the sort of constraints one could hope to apply on a well-motivated model of trans-Planckian physics. We present results for three different approaches -- a grid s…
Detecting dark energy dynamics is the main quest of current dark energy research. Addressing the issue demands a fully consistent analysis of CMB, large scale structure and SN-Ia data with multi-parameter freedom valid for all redshifts. Here we undertake a ten parameter analysis of general dark energy confronted with the first year WMAP, 2dF galaxy survey and latest SN-Ia data. Despite the huge freedom in dark energy dynamics there are no new degeneracies with standard cosmic parameters apart from a mild degeneracy between reionisation and the redshift of acceleration, both of which effective…
We study the possibility of light Dirac neutrino portal dark matter (DM) in an effective field theory setup. Dirac nature of light neutrino automatically includes its right chiral part $ν_R$ which, in our setup, also acts like a portal between DM and the standard model (SM) particles. Considering a Dirac fermion singlet DM stabilized by an unbroken $Z_2$ symmetry, we write down all possible dimension-6 effective operators involving DM-$ν_R$ as well as $ν_R$-SM which conserve $Z_2$, global lepton number and SM gauge symmetries. DM thermalization also ensures the thermalization of $ν_R$, leading…
We study the phenomenology and detection prospects of a sub-GeV Dirac dark matter candidate with resonantly enhanced annihilations via a dark photon mediator. The model evades cosmological constraints on light thermal particles in the early universe while simultaneously being in reach of current and upcoming terrestrial experiments. We conduct a global analysis of the parameter space , considering bounds from accelerator and direct detection experiments, as well as those arising from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the Cosmic Microwave Background and dark matter self-interactions. We also extend our…
Llight-element abundances probing big bang nucleosynthesis and precision data from cosmology probing the cosmic microwave background decoupling epoch have hinted at the presence of extra relativistic degrees of freedom. This is widely referred to as "dark radiation", suggesting the need for new light states in the UV completion of the standard model. We provide a brief and concise overview of the current observational status of such dark radiation and investigate the interplay between two possible interpretations of the extra light states: the right-handed partners of three Dirac neutrinos (wh…
Using DBI inflation as an example, we demonstrate that the detailed geometry of warped compactification can leave an imprint on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We compute CMB observables for DBI inflation in a generic class of warped throats and find that the results (such as the sign of the tilt of the scalar perturbations and its running) depend sensitively on the precise shape of the warp factor. In particular, we analyze the warped deformed conifold and find that the results can differ from those of other warped geometries, even when these geometries approximate well the exact metri…
Feebly interacting thermal relics are promising dark matter candidates. Among them, scenarios of inelastic Dark Matter evade direct detection by suppressed elastic scattering off atomic nuclei. We introduce inelastic Dirac Dark Matter, a new model with two Dirac fermions in the MeV-GeV mass range. At feeble couplings, dark matter can depart from chemical as well as kinetic equilibrium with the Standard Model before freeze-out. In this case, the freeze-out is driven by conversion processes like coscattering, rather than coannihilation. We show that inelastic Dirac relics are consistent with cos…
Choosing how gauge $U(1)_χ$ breaks in the context of $SO(10) \to SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$, $Z_4$ lepton number may be obtained which maintains neutrinos as Dirac fermions. Choosing $Δ(27)$ as the family symmetry of leptons, tree-level Dirac neutrino masses may be forbidden. Choosing a specific set of self-interacting dark-matter particles, Dirac neutrino masses and mixing may then be generated in two loops. This framework allows the realization of cobimaximal neutrino mixing, i.e. $θ_{13} \neq 0$, $θ_{23} = π/4$, $δ_{CP} = \pm π/2$, as well as the desirable feature that the light scalar mediator o…
It is widely accepted that the Universe underwent a period of thermal equilibrium at very early times. One expects a residue of this primordial state to be imprinted on the large scale structure of space time. In this paper we study the morphology of this thermal residue in a universe whose early dynamics is governed by a scalar field. We calculate the amplitude of fluctuations on large scales and compare it to the imprint of vacuum fluctuations. We then use the observed power spectrum of fluctuations on the cosmic microwave background to place a constraint on the temperature of the Universe b…
Universal extra dimension (UED) models with right-handed neutrinos are studied. The introduction of the neutrinos makes us possible not only to describe Dirac neutrino masses but also to solve the cosmological problem called the KK graviton problem. This problem is essentially caused by the late time decay of a KK photon into a KK graviton and a photon, and it distorts the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background or the diffuse photon. We point out that, once we introduce right-handed neutrinos to UED models, the KK photon decays dominantly into neutrinos and does not emit a photon. We also…
Reheating is the the epoch which connects inflation to the subsequent hot Big-Bang phase. Conceptually very important, this era is however observationally poorly known. We show that the current Planck satellite measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies constrain the kinematic properties of the reheating era for most of the inflationary models. This result is obtained by deriving the marginalized posterior distributions of the reheating parameter for about 200 models taken in Encyclopaedia Inflationaris. Weighted by the statistical evidence of each model to explain the …
We discuss the possibility of observing multi-lepton signals at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from the production and decay of heavy Standard Model (SM) singlet neutrinos added in extensions of SM to explain the observed light neutrino masses by seesaw mechanism. In particular, we analyze two `smoking gun' signals depending on the Dirac or Majorana nature of the heavy neutrino: (i) for Majorana case, the same-sign di-lepton signal which can be used as a probe of lepton-number violation, and (ii) for Dirac case, the tri-lepton signal which conserves lepton number but may violate lepton flavor…
Dirac materials, because of their small ${\cal O}(\mbox{meV})$ band gap, are a promising target for dark photon-mediated scattering and absorption of light dark matter. In this paper, we characterize the daily modulation rate of dark matter interacting with a Dirac material due to anisotropies in their crystal structure. We show that daily modulation is an ${\cal O}(1)$ fraction of the total rate for dark matter scattering in the Dirac material ZrTe$_5$. When present, the modulation is dominated by the orientation of the material's dielectric tensor with respect to the dark matter wind, and is…
We compare the prospects for observing theories with Majorana or Dirac gauginos at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. Calculating the expected discovery and exclusion regions, we find that for heavy gluino masses the squark discovery reach is significantly reduced in Dirac gluino models relative to the Majorana case. However, if the squark and gluino masses are close the reach is similar in both scenarios. We also consider the electroweak fine tuning of theories observable at such a collider, and the impact of existing constraints from flavour and CP violating observables. Models with Ma…
The radiative type-I seesaw has been already implemented to explain the lightness of Majorana neutrinos with both Majorana and Dirac heavy fermions, and the lightness of Dirac neutrinos with Dirac heavy fermions. In this work we present a minimal implementation of the radiative type-I seesaw with light Dirac neutrinos and heavy Majorana fermions. An inert doublet and a complex singlet scalar complete the dark sector which is protected by an Abelian fermiophobic gauge symmetry that also forbids tree level mass contributions for the full set of light neutrinos. A fermion vector-like extension of…
Electromagnetic properties of neutrinos, if ever observed, could help to decide the Dirac versus Majorana nature of neutrinos. We show that the magnetic moments of Majorana neutrinos have to fulfill triangle inequalities, $|μ_{ν_τ}|^2 \leq |μ_{ν_μ}|^2 +|μ_{ν_e}|^2$ and cyclic permutations, which do not hold for Dirac neutrinos. Observing a violation of these inequalities, e.g. by measuring the magnetic moment of $ν_τ$ at SHiP, would thus strongly hint either at the Dirac nature of neutrinos or at the presence of at least one extra light sterile mode.
If the Dirac neutrino masses are generated by a new scalar doublet with a vacuum at keV order, there would be rare hope to probe the framework in low-energy flavor physics, such as the lepton-flavor violating processes. However, the predicted neutrino Yukawa couplings being around the order of electronic Yukawa can realize a purely thermal Dirac leptogenesis, and thus render a more direct link between the high- and the low-energy CP violation. Despite its inert property in the low-energy flavor processes, the keV-vacuum induced Dirac neutrino model can generate a significant shift of the effec…
We analyze signals in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in theories where the small Dirac neutrino masses arise as a consequence of the compositeness of right-handed neutrinos. In such theories, the right-handed neutrinos are massless ``baryons'' of a new strong gauge interaction. We find that the results crucially depend on whether or not the new strong sector undergoes chiral symmetry breaking. In the case with chiral symmetry breaking, we find that there are indeed signals in the CMB, but none of them is a direct consequence of neutrino compositeness. In contrast, if the underlying theo…
We thoroughly study the photo-disintegration of $^4$He on the cosmic microwave background using the most recent cross-section data both from the inclusive measurement observing the analog of the giant dipole resonance in $^4$He through the charge-exchange spin-flip $^4$He ($^7$Li,$^7$Be) reaction and from measurements of exclusive two-body and three-body processes: $^4{\rm He} \, (γ,p)\, ^3{\rm H}$, $^4{\rm He} \, (γ,n) \, ^3{\rm He}$, and $^4$He $(γ, pn)$ $^2$H. We show that the present-day (redshift $z=0$) mean free path of ultra-relativistic (Lorentz factor $\sim 10^{10}$) helium nuclei inc…
