We prove strict necessary density conditions for coherent frames and Riesz sequences on homogeneous groups. Let $N$ be a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group with a dilation structure (a homogeneous group) and let $(π, \mathcal{H}_π)$ be an irreducible, square-integrable representation modulo the center $Z(N)$ of $N$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_π$ of formal dimension $d_π$. If $g \in \mathcal{H}_π$ is an integrable vector and the set $\{ π(λ)g : λ\in Λ\}$ for a discrete subset $Λ\subseteq N / Z(N)$ forms a frame for $\mathcal{H}_π$, then its density satisfies the strict inequality $D^-(Λ)> d_π$, where $D^-(Λ)$ is the lower Beurling density. An analogous density condition $D^+(Λ) < d_π$ holds for a Riesz sequence in $\mathcal{H}_π$ contained in the orbit of $(π, \mathcal{H}_π)$. The proof is based on a deformation theorem for coherent systems, a universality result for $p$-frames and $p$-Riesz sequences, some results from Banach space theory, and tools from the analysis on homogeneous groups.
In this paper we prove amalgam Balian-Low theorems and Balian-Low type theorems on $L^2(\mathbb{C})$ for the special Hermite operator using the Weyl transform.
In this paper we extend the Balian--Low theorem, which is a version of the uncertainty principle for Gabor (Weyl--Heisenberg) systems, to functions of several variables. In particular, we first prove the Balian--Low theorem for arbitrary quadratic forms. Then we generalize further and prove the Balian--Low theorem for differential operators associated with a symplectic basis for the symplectic form on ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$.
We extend the Balian-Low theorem to Gabor subspaces of $L^2(\mathbb R)$ by involving the concept of additional time-frequency shift invariance. We prove that if a Gabor system on a lattice of rational density is a Riesz sequence generating a subspace which is invariant under an additional time-frequency shift, then its generator cannot decay fast simultaneously in time and frequency.
We formulate and prove finite dimensional analogs for the classical Balian-Low theorem, and for a quantitative Balian-Low type theorem that, in the case of the real line, we obtained in a previous work. Moreover, we show that these results imply their counter-parts on the real line.
We study functions generating Gabor Riesz bases on the integer lattice. The classical Balian-Low theorem restricts the simultaneous time and frequency localization of such functions. We obtain a quantitative estimate that extends both this result and other related theorems.
We point out a link between the theorem of Balian and Low on the non-existence of well-localized Gabor-Riesz bases and a constant curvature connection on projective modules over noncommutative tori.
Let $\mathcal G\subset L^2(\mathbb R)$ be the subspace spanned by a Gabor Riesz sequence $(g,Λ)$ with $g\in L^2(\mathbb R)$ and a lattice $Λ\subset\mathbb R^2$ of rational density. It was shown recently that if $g$ is well-localized both in time and frequency, then $\mathcal G$ cannot contain any time-frequency shift $π(z) g$ of $g$ with $z\notinΛ$. In this paper, we improve the result to the quantitative statement that the $L^2$-distance of $π(z)g$ to the space $\mathcal G$ is equivalent to the Euclidean distance of $z$ to the lattice $Λ$, in the sense that the ratio between those two distanc…
We look at the time-frequency localisation of generators of lattice Gabor systems. For a generator of a Riesz basis, this localisation is described by the classical Balian-Low theorem. We establish Balian-Low type theorems for complete and minimal Gabor systems with a frame-type approximation property. These results describe how the best possible localisation of a generator is limited by the degree of control over the coefficients in approximations given by the system, and provide a continuous transition between the classical Balian-Low conditions and the corresponding conditions for generator…
We generalize Feichtinger and Kaiblinger's theorem on linear deformations of uniform Gabor frames to the setting of a locally compact abelian group $G$. More precisely, we show that Gabor frames over lattices in the time-frequency plane of $G$ with windows in the Feichtinger algebra are stable under small deformations of the lattice by an automorphism of $G \times \widehat{G}$. The topology we use on the automorphisms is the Braconnier topology. We characterize the groups in which the Balian--Low theorem for the Feichtinger algebra holds as exactly the groups with noncompact identity component…
Let $Λ$ be a lattice in a second countable, locally compact abelian group $G$ with annihilator $Λ^{\perp} \subseteq \widehat{G}$. We investigate the validity of the following statement: For every $η$ in the Feichtinger algebra $S_0(G)$, the Gabor system $\{ M_τ T_λ η\}_{λ\in Λ, τ\in Λ^{\perp}}$ is not a frame for $L^2(G)$. When $G = \mathbb{R}$ and $Λ= α\mathbb{Z}$, this statement is a variant of the Balian-Low theorem. Extending a result of R. Balan, we show that whether the statement generalizes to $(G,Λ)$ is equivalent to the nontriviality of a certain vector bundle over the compact space $…
A sharp version of the Balian-Low theorem is proven for the generators of finitely generated shift-invariant spaces. If generators $\{f_k\}_{k=1}^K \subset L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ are translated along a lattice to form a frame or Riesz basis for a shift-invariant space $V$, and if $V$ has extra invariance by a suitable finer lattice, then one of the generators $f_k$ must satisfy $\int_{\mathbb{R}^d} |x| |f_k(x)|^2 dx = \infty$, namely, $\widehat{f_k} \notin H^{1/2}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. Similar results are proven for frames of translates that are not Riesz bases without the assumption of extra lattice in…

In this paper, we consider the time-frequency localization of the generator of a principal shift-invariant space on the real line which has additional shift-invariance. We prove that if a principal shift-invariant space on the real line is translation-invariant then any of its orthonormal (or Riesz) generators is non-integrable. However, for any $n\ge2$, there exist principal shift-invariant spaces on the real line that are also $\nZ$-invariant with an integrable orthonormal (or a Riesz) generator $ϕ$, but $ϕ$ satisfies $\int_{\mathbb R} |ϕ(x)|^2 |x|^{1+ε} dx=\infty$ for any $ε>0$ and its Four…
We prove a vector-valued non-homogeneous Tb theorem on certain quasimetric spaces equipped with what we call an upper doubling measure. Essentially, we merge recent techniques from the domain and range side of things, achieving a Tb theorem which is quite general with respect to both of them.
Let (X,d,μ) be a space of homogeneous type and E a UMD Banach space. Under the assumption mu({x})=0 for all x in X, we prove a representation theorem for singular integral operators on (X,d,mu) as a series of simple shifts and rearrangements plus two paraproducts. This gives a T(1) Theorem in this setting.
We formulate and prove a version of Paley-Wiener theorem for the inverse Fourier transform on non-compact Riemannian symmetric spaces and Heisenberg groups. The main ingredient in the proof is the Gutzmer's formula.
Hadamard's global inverse theorem provides conditions for a function to be globally invertible on Rn. In this note we show that the conditions are robust enough for the conclusion to hold even if we relax the conditions by removing the assumption at a finite number of points. As a consequence, we get a global inverse function theorem for homogeneous functions.
We prove a new dyadic representation theorem with applications to the $T(1)$ and $A_2$ theorems. In particular, we obtain the non-homogeneous $T(1)$ theorem under weaker kernel regularity than the earlier approaches.
We extend the local non-homogeneous Tb theorem of Nazarov, Treil and Volberg to the setting of singular integrals with operator-valued kernel that act on vector-valued functions. Here, `vector-valued' means `taking values in a function lattice with the UMD (unconditional martingale differences) property'. A similar extension (but for general UMD spaces rather than UMD lattices) of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg's global non-homogeneous Tb theorem was achieved earlier by the first author, and it has found applications in the work of Mayboroda and Volberg on square-functions and rectifiability. Our local…
If A is a nonnegative matrix whose associated directed graph is strongly connected, the Perron-Frobenius theorem asserts that A has an eigenvector in the positive cone, (R^+)^n. We associate a directed graph to any homogeneous, monotone function, f: (R^+)^n -> (R^+)^n, and show that if the graph is strongly connected then f has a (nonlinear) eigenvector in (R^+)^n. Several results in the literature emerge as corollaries. Our methods show that the Perron-Frobenius theorem is ``really'' about the boundedness of invariant subsets in the Hilbert projective metric. They lead to further existence re…
In 1980, J. Roe proved that if $\{f_{k}\}_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ is doubly infinite sequence of functions in $\mathbb{R}$ which is uniformly bounded and satisfies $(df_{k}/dx)=f_{k+1}$ for all $k\in\mathbb{Z}$ then $f_{0}(x)=a\sin(x+θ)$ for some $a,θ\in\mathbb{R}$. Later in 1993 Strichartz suitably extended the above result to $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this article we prove a version of their result for homogeneous trees.
We give a functional representation theorem for a class of real p-Banach algebras. This theorem is used to show that every p-homogeneous seminorm with square property on a real associative algebra is submultiplicative.
We lift upper and lower estimates from linear functionals to $n$-homogeneous polynomials and using this result show that $l_\infty$ is finitely represented in the space of $n$-homogeneous polynomials, $n\ge2$, for any infinite dimensional Banach space. Refinements are also given.
The Theorem on Invariance of Domain due to L.E.J. Brouwer states that one connected, compact (Hausdorff) m-dimensional manifold embedded into another actually realizes a homeomorphism. This fundamental result is relevant to Functional Analysis, as the classical Gelfand-Mazur Theorem, as well as the real form of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, can both be derived easily from it. Our main tool is the m-dimensional borsuk-Ulam Theorem: a certain real vector must be found, which is established by means of solving a real homogeneous system of equations as in the Theorem of Be'zout. We emphasize…
A very particular by-product of the result announced in the title reads as follows: Let $(X,<\cdot,\cdot>)$ be a real Hilbert space, $T:X\to X$ a compact and symmetric linear operator, and $z\in X$ such that the equation $T(x)-\|T\|x=z$ has no solution in $X$. For each $r>0$, set $γ(r)=\sup_{x\in S_r}J(x)$, where $J(x)=< T(x)-2z,x>$ and $S_r=\{x\in X:\|x\|^2=r\}$. Then, the function $γ$ is $C^1$, increasing and strictly concave in $]0,+\infty[$, with $γ'(]0,+\infty[)=]\|T\|,+\infty[$; moreover, for each $r>0$, the problem of maximizing $J$ over $S_r$ is well-posed, and one has $$T(\hat x_r)-γ'…
We consider a Hilbert space ${\bf H}$ equipped with a set of strongly continuous bounded semigroups satisfying certain conditions. The conditions allow to define a family of moduli of continuity $Ω^{r}(s,f),\>r\in \mathbb{N}, s>0,$ of vectors in ${\bf H}$ and a family of Paley-Wiener subspaces $PW_σ$ parametrized by bandwidth $σ>0$. These subspaces are explored to introduce notion of the best approximation $\mathcal{E}(σ, f)$ of a general vector in ${\bf H}$ by Paley-Wiener vectors of a certain bandwidth $σ>0$. The main objective of the paper is to prove the so-called Jackson-type estimate $\m…
The existence of a homogeneous decomposition for continuous and epi-translation invariant valuations on super-coercive functions is established. Continuous and epi-translation invariant valuations that are epi-homogeneous of degree $n$ are classified. By duality, corresponding results are obtained for valuations on finite-valued convex functions.
We show that the homogeneous approximation property and the comparison theorem hold for arbitrary coherent frames. This observation answers some questions about the density of frames that are not covered by the theory of Balan, Casazza, Heil, and Landau. The proofs are a variation of the method developed by Ramanathan and Steger.
This paper provides sufficient density conditions for the existence of smooth vectors generating a frame or Riesz sequence in the lattice orbit of a square-integrable projective representation of a nilpotent Lie group. The conditions involve the product of lattice co-volume and formal dimension, and complement Balian-Low type theorems for the non-existence of smooth frames and Riesz sequences at the critical density. The proof hinges on a connection between smooth lattice orbits and generators for an explicitly constructed finitely generated Hilbert $C^*$-module. An important ingredient in the…
In this paper we extend classical Titchmarsh theorems on the Fourier transform of Hölder-Lipschitz functions to the setting of compact homogeneous manifolds. As an application, we derive a Fourier multiplier theorem for $L^2$-Hölder-Lipschitz spaces on compact Lie groups. We also derive conditions and a characterisation for Dini-Lipschitz classes on compact homogeneous manifolds in terms of the behaviour of their Fourier coefficients.
In this work we establish a sampling theorem for functions in Besov spaces on spaces of homogeneous type as defined in [HY] in the spirit of their recent counterpart for R d established by Jaming-Malinnikova in [JM]. The main tool is the wavelet decomposition presented by Deng-Han in [DH].
We study the Fourier transform for compactly supported distributional sections of complex homogeneous vector bundles on symmetric spaces of non-compact type $X = G/K$. We prove a characterisation of their range. In fact, from Delorme's Paley-Wiener theorem for compactly supported smooth functions on a real reductive group of Harish-Chandra class, we deduce topological Paley-Wiener and Paley-Wiener-Schwartz theorems for sections.
We prove a Tb theorem on quasimetric spaces equipped with what we call an upper doubling measure. This is a property that encompasses both the doubling measures and those satisfying the upper power bound μ(B(x,r)) \le Cr^d. Our spaces are only assumed to satisfy the geometric doubling property: every ball of radius r can be covered by at most N balls of radius r/2. A key ingredient is the construction of random systems of dyadic cubes in such spaces.
We prove a general sparse domination theorem in a space of homogeneous type, in which a vector-valued operator is controlled pointwise by a positive, local expression called a sparse operator. We use the structure of the operator to get sparse domination in which the usual $\ell^1$-sum in the sparse operator is replaced by an $\ell^r$-sum. This sparse domination theorem is applicable to various operators from both harmonic analysis and (S)PDE. Using our main theorem, we prove the $A_2$-theorem for vector-valued Calderón--Zygmund operators in a space of homogeneous type, from which we deduce an…
We present here the General formulation of the problem of existence and construction of upper and lower envelope for an arbitrary function with values from the completion of the ordered set ${\rm S}$ for a certain class of functions with values in ${\rm S}$. The task is parsed only for the simplest case of model class of homogeneous functions. Consider only order-algebraic version without the involvement of the topology.
In this paper an extended CPR decomposition theorem for Finsler symmetric spaces of semi-negative curvature in the context of reductive structures is proven. This decomposition theorem is applied to give a geometric description of the complexification of some infinite dimensional homogeneous spaces.
We give a uniform approximation of the characteristic function of the boundary of a centrally symmetric n-dimensional compact and convex set by homogeneous polynomials of even degree $d$ fulfilling $|g_d-1|\leq E/d^{1/2-β}$, for every $β>0$, large enough $d$, and some constant $E$ only depending on $n$ and $K$. In particular, this proves a conjecture posed by Kroo in 2004, also known as the Stone-Weierstrass theorem for homogeneous polynomials. Moreover, we introduce the d-volume ratio for a convex body $K$ in $\mathbb R^n$, by means of its d-Lasserre-Löwner polynomial. We also prove an upper …
The paper gives a Banach space -valued extension of the Tb theorem of Nazarov, Treil and Volberg (2003) concerning the boundedness of singular integral operators with respect to a measure, which only satisfies an upper control on the size of balls. Under the same assumptions as in their result, such operators are shown to be bounded on the Bochner spaces of functions with values in a Banach space with the unconditionality property of martingale differences (UMD). The new proof deals directly with all Lebesgue exponents p in the range 1<p<infinity, and relies on delicate estimates for the non-h…
Using a K-theory point of view, Bott related the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators on compact homogeneous spaces to the Weyl character formula. This article explains how to prove the local index theorem for compact homogenous spaces using Lie algebra methods. The method follows in outline the proof of the local index theorem due to Berline and Vergne. But the use of Kostant's cubic Dirac operator in place of the Riemannian Dirac operator leads to substantial simplifications. An important role is also played by the quantum Weil algebra of Alekseev and Meinrenken.
We prove an abstract Implicit Function Theorem with parameters for smooth operators defined on sequence scales, modeled for the search of quasi-periodic solutions of PDEs. The tame estimates required for the inverse linearised operators at each step of the iterative scheme are deduced via a multiscale inductive argument. The Cantor like set of parameters where the solution exists is defined in a non inductive way. This formulation completely decouples the iterative scheme from the measure theoretical analysis of the parameters where the small divisors non-resonance conditions are verified. As …
The embedding theorem arises in several problems from analysis and geometry. The purpose of this paper is to provide a deeper understanding of analysis and geometry with a particular focus on embedding theorems on spaces of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss. We prove that embedding theorems hold on spaces of homogeneous type if and only if geometric conditions, namely the measures of all balls have lower bounds, hold. As applications, our results provide new and sharp previous related embedding theorems for the Sobolev, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.
In this paper we fix $1\le p<\infty$ and consider $(\Om,d,μ)$ be an unbounded, locally compact, non-complete metric measure space equipped with a doubling measure $μ$ supporting a $p$-Poincaré inequality such that $\Om$ is a uniform domain in its completion $\bar\Om$. We realize the trace of functions in the Dirichlet-Sobolev space $D^{1,p}(\Om)$ on the boundary $\partial\Om$ as functions in the homogeneous Besov space $HB^α_{p,p}(\partial\Om)$ for suitable $α$; here, $\partial\Om$ is equipped with a non-atomic Borel regular measure $ν$. We show that if $ν$ satisfies a $θ$-codimensional condit…
We introduce the concept of shape partition of a tensor and formulate a general tensor eigenvalue problem that includes all previously studied eigenvalue problems as special cases. We formulate irreducibility and symmetry properties of a nonnegative tensor $T$ in terms of the associated shape partition. We recast the eigenvalue problem for $T$ as a fixed point problem on a suitable product of projective spaces. This allows us to use the theory of multi-homogeneous order-preserving maps to derive a new and unifying Perron-Frobenius theorem for nonnegative tensors which either implies earlier re…
The Perron-Frobenius theory for nonnegative matrices has been generalized to order-preserving homogeneous mappings on a cone and more recently to nonnegative multilinear forms. We unify both approaches by introducing the concept of order-preserving multi-homogeneous mappings, their associated nonlinear spectral problems and spectral radii. We show several Perron-Frobenius type results for these mappings addressing existence, uniqueness and maximality of nonnegative and positive eigenpairs. We prove a Collatz-Wielandt principle and other characterizations of the spectral radius and analyze the …
