We aim to simultaneously estimate the 3D articulated pose and high fidelity volumetric occupancy of human performance, from multiple viewpoint video (MVV) with as few as two views. We use a multi-channel symmetric 3D convolutional encoder-decoder with a dual loss to enforce the learning of a latent embedding that enables inference of skeletal joint positions and a volumetric reconstruction of the performance. The inference is regularised via a prior learned over a dataset of view-ablated multi-view video footage of a wide range of subjects and actions, and show this to generalise well across unseen subjects and actions. We demonstrate improved reconstruction accuracy and lower pose estimation error relative to prior work on two MVV performance capture datasets: Human 3.6M and TotalCapture.

How to effectively represent camera pose is an essential problem in 3D computer vision, especially in tasks such as camera pose regression and novel view synthesis. Traditionally, 3D position of the camera is represented by Cartesian coordinate and the orientation is represented by Euler angle or quaternions. These representations are manually designed, which may not be the most effective representation for downstream tasks. In this work, we propose an approach to learn neural representations of camera poses and 3D scenes, coupled with neural representations of local camera movements. Specific…

Despite recent advances on the topic of direct camera pose regression using neural networks, accurately estimating the camera pose of a single RGB image still remains a challenging task. To address this problem, we introduce a novel framework based, in its core, on the idea of implicitly learning the joint distribution of RGB images and their corresponding camera poses using a discriminator network and adversarial learning. Our method allows not only to regress the camera pose from a single image, however, also offers a solely RGB-based solution for camera pose refinement using the discriminat…
Monocular depth predictors are typically trained on large-scale training sets which are naturally biased w.r.t the distribution of camera poses. As a result, trained predictors fail to make reliable depth predictions for testing examples captured under uncommon camera poses. To address this issue, we propose two novel techniques that exploit the camera pose during training and prediction. First, we introduce a simple perspective-aware data augmentation that synthesizes new training examples with more diverse views by perturbing the existing ones in a geometrically consistent manner. Second, we…

One of the key criticisms of deep learning is that large amounts of expensive and difficult-to-acquire training data are required in order to train models with high performance and good generalization capabilities. Focusing on the task of monocular camera pose estimation via scene coordinate regression (SCR), we describe a novel method, Domain Adaptation of Networks for Camera pose Estimation (DANCE), which enables the training of models without access to any labels on the target task. DANCE requires unlabeled images (without known poses, ordering, or scene coordinate labels) and a 3D represen…
We introduce CGA-PoseNet, which uses the 1D-Up approach to Conformal Geometric Algebra (CGA) to represent rotations and translations with a single mathematical object, the motor, for camera pose regression. We do so starting from PoseNet, which successfully predicts camera poses from small datasets of RGB frames. State-of-the-art methods, however, require expensive tuning to balance the orientational and translational components of the camera pose. This is usually done through complex, ad-hoc loss function to be minimized, and in some cases also requires 3D points as well as images. Our approac…
We propose a novel 3D human pose detector using two panoramic cameras. We show that transforming fisheye perspectives to rectilinear views allows a direct application of two-dimensional deep-learning pose estimation methods, without the explicit need for a costly re-training step to compensate for fisheye image distortions. By utilizing panoramic cameras, our method is capable of accurately estimating human poses over a large field of view. This renders our method suitable for ergonomic analyses and other pose based assessments.
Calibrating sports cameras is important for autonomous broadcasting and sports analysis. Here we propose a highly automatic method for calibrating sports cameras from a single image using synthetic data. First, we develop a novel camera pose engine. The camera pose engine has only three significant free parameters so that it can effectively generate a lot of camera poses and corresponding edge (i.e, field marking) images. Then, we learn compact deep features via a siamese network from paired edge image and camera pose and build a feature-pose database. After that, we use a novel two-GAN (gener…

We consider the problem of unsupervised camera pose estimation. Given an input video sequence, our goal is to estimate the camera pose (i.e. the camera motion) between consecutive frames. Traditionally, this problem is tackled by placing strict constraints on the transformation vector or by incorporating optical flow through a complex pipeline. We propose an alternative approach that utilizes a compositional re-estimation process for camera pose estimation. Given an input, we first estimate a depth map. Our method then iteratively estimates the camera motion based on the estimated depth map. O…

In this paper a method for camera pose estimation from a sequence of images is presented. The method assumes camera is calibrated (intrinsic parameters are known) which allows to decrease a number of required pairs of corresponding points compared to uncalibrated case. Our algorithm can be used as a first stage in a structure from motion stereo reconstruction system.

In this work, we tackle the problem of active camera localization, which controls the camera movements actively to achieve an accurate camera pose. The past solutions are mostly based on Markov Localization, which reduces the position-wise camera uncertainty for localization. These approaches localize the camera in the discrete pose space and are agnostic to the localization-driven scene property, which restricts the camera pose accuracy in the coarse scale. We propose to overcome these limitations via a novel active camera localization algorithm, composed of a passive and an active localizati…
The estimation of the camera poses associated with a set of images commonly relies on feature matches between the images. In contrast, we are the first to address this challenge by using objectness regions to guide the pose estimation problem rather than explicit semantic object detections. We propose Pose Refiner Network (PoserNet) a light-weight Graph Neural Network to refine the approximate pair-wise relative camera poses. PoserNet exploits associations between the objectness regions - concisely expressed as bounding boxes - across multiple views to globally refine sparsely connected view g…

Although the performance of 3D human pose and shape estimation methods has improved significantly in recent years, existing approaches typically generate 3D poses defined in camera or human-centered coordinate system. This makes it difficult to estimate a person's pure pose and motion in world coordinate system for a video captured using a moving camera. To address this issue, this paper presents a camera motion agnostic approach for predicting 3D human pose and mesh defined in the world coordinate system. The core idea of the proposed approach is to estimate the difference between two adjacen…
Camera pose estimation or camera relocalization is the centerpiece in numerous computer vision tasks such as visual odometry, structure from motion (SfM) and SLAM. In this paper we propose a neural network approach with a graph transformer backbone, namely TransCamP, to address the camera relocalization problem. In contrast with prior work where the pose regression is mainly guided by photometric consistency, TransCamP effectively fuses the image features, camera pose information and inter-frame relative camera motions into encoded graph attributes and is trained towards the graph consistency …

In many scenarios where cameras are applied, such as robot positioning and unmanned driving, camera calibration is one of the most important pre-work. The interactive calibration method based on the plane board is becoming popular in camera calibration field due to its repeatability and operation advantages. However, the existing methods select suggestions from a fixed dataset of pre-defined poses based on subjective experience, which leads to a certain degree of one-sidedness. Moreover, they does not give users clear instructions on how to place the board in the specified pose.

We introduce GNeRF, a framework to marry Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) with Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) reconstruction for the complex scenarios with unknown and even randomly initialized camera poses. Recent NeRF-based advances have gained popularity for remarkable realistic novel view synthesis. However, most of them heavily rely on accurate camera poses estimation, while few recent methods can only optimize the unknown camera poses in roughly forward-facing scenes with relatively short camera trajectories and require rough camera poses initialization. Differently, our GNeRF only ut…
The rolling shutter camera has received great attention due to its low cost imaging capability, however, the estimation of relative pose between rolling shutter cameras still remains a difficult problem owing to its line-by-line image capturing characteristics. To alleviate this problem, we exploit gyroscope measurements, angular velocity, along with image measurement to compute the relative pose between rolling shutter cameras. The gyroscope measurements provide the information about instantaneous motion that causes the rolling shutter distortion. Having gyroscope measurements in one hand, we…

Detecting 3D lanes from the camera is a rising problem for autonomous vehicles. In this task, the correct camera pose is the key to generating accurate lanes, which can transform an image from perspective-view to the top-view. With this transformation, we can get rid of the perspective effects so that 3D lanes would look similar and can accurately be fitted by low-order polynomials. However, mainstream 3D lane detectors rely on perfect camera poses provided by other sensors, which is expensive and encounters multi-sensor calibration issues. To overcome this problem, we propose to predict 3D la…

Camera pose estimation is a key step in standard 3D reconstruction pipelines that operate on a dense set of images of a single object or scene. However, methods for pose estimation often fail when only a few images are available because they rely on the ability to robustly identify and match visual features between image pairs. While these methods can work robustly with dense camera views, capturing a large set of images can be time-consuming or impractical. We propose SparsePose for recovering accurate camera poses given a sparse set of wide-baseline images (fewer than 10). The method learns …

The neural radiance field (NeRF) for realistic novel view synthesis requires camera poses to be pre-acquired by a structure-from-motion (SfM) approach. This two-stage strategy is not convenient to use and degrades the performance because the error in the pose extraction can propagate to the view synthesis. We integrate the pose extraction and view synthesis into a single end-to-end procedure so they can benefit from each other. For training NeRF models, only RGB images are given, without pre-known camera poses. The camera poses are obtained by the epipolar constraint in which the identical fea…

To improve the generalization of 3D human pose estimators, many existing deep learning based models focus on adding different augmentations to training poses. However, data augmentation techniques are limited to the "seen" pose combinations and hard to infer poses with rare "unseen" joint positions. To address this problem, we present CameraPose, a weakly-supervised framework for 3D human pose estimation from a single image, which can not only be applied on 2D-3D pose pairs but also on 2D alone annotations. By adding a camera parameter branch, any in-the-wild 2D annotations can be fed into our…

We propose two minimal solutions to the problem of relative pose estimation of (i) a calibrated camera from four points in two views and (ii) a calibrated generalized camera from five points in two views. In both cases, the relative rotation angle between the views is assumed to be known. In practice, such angle can be derived from the readings of a 3d gyroscope. We represent the rotation part of the motion in terms of unit quaternions in order to construct polynomial equations encoding the epipolar constraints. The Gröbner basis technique is then used to efficiently derive the solutions. Our …
The choice of poses for camera calibration with planar patterns is only rarely considered - yet the calibration precision heavily depends on it. This work presents a pose selection method that finds a compact and robust set of calibration poses and is suitable for interactive calibration. Consequently, singular poses that would lead to an unreliable solution are avoided explicitly, while poses reducing the uncertainty of the calibration are favoured. For this, we use uncertainty propagation. Our method takes advantage of a self-identifying calibration pattern to track the camera pose in real-t…

Camera pose tracking attracts much interest both from academic and industrial communities, of which the methods based on planar markers are easy to be implemented. However, most of the existing methods need to identify multiple points in the marker images for matching to space points. Then, PnP and RANSAC are used to compute the camera pose. If cameras move fast or are far away from markers, matching is easy to generate errors and even RANSAC cannot remove incorrect matching. Then, the result by PnP cannot have good performance. To solve this problem, we design circular markers and represent 6…

In this paper we present a fast minimal solver for absolute camera pose estimation from four known points that lie in a plane. We assume a perspective camera model with unknown focal length and unknown radial distortion. The radial distortion is modelled using the division model with one parameter. We show that the solutions to this problem can be found from a univariate six-degree polynomial. This results in a very fast and numerically stable solver.
We consider the task of re-calibrating the 3D pose of a static surveillance camera, whose pose may change due to external forces, such as birds, wind, falling objects or earthquakes. Conventionally, camera pose estimation can be solved with a PnP (Perspective-n-Point) method using 2D-to-3D feature correspondences, when 3D points are known. However, 3D point annotations are not always available or practical to obtain in real-world applications. We propose an alternative strategy for extracting 3D information to solve for camera pose by using pedestrian trajectories. We observe that 2D pedestria…

To that end, we cast the problem as a view frustum space pose estimation, where absolute depth prediction and joint relative depth estimations are disentangled. Final 3D predictions are obtained in camera coordinates by the inverse camera projection. Based on this, we also present a con…

Human pose estimation from single images is a challenging problem that is typically solved by supervised learning. Unfortunately, labeled training data does not yet exist for many human activities since 3D annotation requires dedicated motion capture systems. Therefore, we propose an unsupervised approach that learns to predict a 3D human pose from a single image while only being trained with 2D pose data, which can be crowd-sourced and is already widely available. To this end, we estimate the 3D pose that is most likely over random projections, with the likelihood estimated using normalizing …

However, it was trained using a naive loss function, with hyper-parameters which require expensive tuning. In this paper, we give the problem a more fundamental theoretical treatment. Visual localization is the task of accurate camera pose estimation in a known scene. It is a key problem in computer vision and robotics, with applications including self-driving cars, Structure-from-Motion, SLAM, and Mixed Reality. Traditionally, the localization problem has been tackled using 3D geometry. Recently, end-to-end approaches based on convolutional neural networks have become popular. These methods learn to directly regress the camera pose from an input image. However, they do not achieve the same level of pose accuracy as 3D structure-based methods. In this paper, we present a novel linear algorithm to estimate the 6 DoF relative pose from consecutive frames of stereo rolling shutter (RS) cameras. Our method is derived based on the assumption that stereo cameras undergo motion with constant velocity around the center of the baseline, which needs 9 pairs of correspondences on both left and right consecutive frames. The stereo RS images enable the recovery of depth maps from the semi-global matching (SGM) algorithm. With the estimated camera motion and depth map, we can correct the RS images to get the undistorted images without any scene s…

Relative pose estimation is a fundamental problem in computer vision and it has been studied for conventional global shutter cameras for decades. However, recently, a rolling shutter camera has been widely used due to its low cost imaging capability and, since the rolling shutter camera captures the image line-by-line, the relative pose estimation of a rolling shutter camera is more difficult than that of a global shutter camera. In this paper, we propose to exploit inertial measurements (gravity and angular velocity) for the rolling shutter relative pose estimation problem. The inertial measu…

The point correspondence (PC) and affine correspondence (AC) are widely used for relative pose estimation. An AC consists of a PC across two views and an affine transformation between the small patches around this PC. Previous work demonstrates that one AC generally provides three independent constraints for relative pose estimation. For multi-camera systems, there is still not any AC-based minimal solver for general relative pose estimation.
