Based on a previous paper [Chr17] on Neumann data for Dirichlet eigenfunctions on triangles, we extend the study in two ways. First, we investigate the (semi-classical) Neumann data mass on perturbed triangles. Specifically, we replace one side of a triangle by adding a smooth perturbation, and assume that the disparity between the perturbation and the original side is bounded by a small value $ε$. Second, we add a small $ε$ sized potential to the (semi-classical) Laplacian and see how the results change on triangles. In both cases, we find that the $L^2$ norm of Neumann data on each side is close to the length of the side divided by the area of the triangle, and the difference is dominated by $ε$.
In this paper we study the behaviour of the Neumann data of Dirichlet eigenfunctions on triangles. We prove that the $L^2$ norm of the (semi-classical) Neumann data on each side is equal to the length of the side divided by the area of the triangle. The novel feature of this result is that it is {\it not} an asymptotic, but an exact formula. The proof is by simple integrations by parts.
A mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem is regularized with a family of singularly perturbed Neumann-Robin boundary problems, parametrized by $\varepsilon > 0$. Using an asymptotic development by Gamma-convergence, the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to the perturbed problems is studied as $\varepsilon \to 0^+$, recovering classical results in the literature.
In this paper we prove that a singularly perturbed Neumann problem with potentials admits the existence of interior spikes concentrating in maxima and minima of an auxiliary function depending only on the potentials.
In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.
We prove that among all triangles of given diameter, the equilateral triangle minimizes the sum of the first $n$ eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian, when $n \geq 3$. The result fails for $n=2$, because the second eigenvalue is known to be minimal for the degenerate acute isosceles triangle (rather than for the equilateral) while the first eigenvalue is 0 for every triangle. We show the third eigenvalue is minimal for the equilateral triangle.
We consider the equation $-ε^{2}Δu + u = u^ {p}$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\R^{3}$ with edges. We impose Neumann boundary conditions, assuming $1<p<5$, and prove concentration of solutions at suitable points of $\partialΩ$ on the edges.
This paper is concerned with a Neumann type problem for singularly perturbed fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with subcritical exponent. For some smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbf R^n$, our boundary condition is given by \begin{equation*} \int_Ω\frac{u(x)-u(y)}{|x-y|^{n+2s}}dy=0\quad\mbox{for }x\in \mathbf R^n\setminus\barΩ. \end{equation*} We establish existence of nonnegative small energy solutions, and also investigate the integrability of the solutions on $\mathbf R^n$.
The paper deals with the Neumann spectral problem for a singularly perturbed second order elliptic operator with bounded lower order terms. The main goal is to provide a refined description of the limit behaviour of the principal eigenvalue and eigenfunction. Using the logarithmic transformation we reduce the studied problem to additive eigenvalue problem for a singularly perturbed Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Then assuming that the Aubry set of the Hamiltonian consists of a finite number of points or limit cycles situated in the domain or on its boundary, we find the limit of the eigenvalue and …
We consider the equation $- \e^2 \D u + u= u^p$ in $Ω\subseteq \R^N$, where $Ω$ is open, smooth and bounded, and we prove concentration of solutions along $k$-dimensional minimal submanifolds of $\partial Ø$, for $N \geq 3$ and for $k \in \{1, ..., N-2\}$. We impose Neumann boundary conditions, assuming $1<p <\frac{N-k+2}{N-k-2}$ and $\e \to 0^+$. This result settles in full generality a phenomenon previously considered only in the particular case $N = 3$ and $k = 1$.
In this work, we prove the existence of a family of solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation with nonlinear Neumann boundary condition under some constraints, whose nodal sets concentrate asymptotically to a given volume nondegenerate capillary hypersurface in a compact Riemannian manifold. Our construction is inspired by the works of Pacard and of Pacard and Ritoré.
In this paper we study the number of the boundary single peak solutions of the problem {align*} {cases} -\varepsilon^2 Δu + u = u^p, &\text{in}Ωu > 0, &\text{in}Ω\frac{\partial u}{\partial ν} = 0,& \text{on}\partial Ω{cases} {align*} for $\varepsilon$ small and $p$ subcritical. Under some suitable assumptions on the shape of the boundary near a critical point of the mean curvature, we are able to prove exact multiplicity results. Note that the degeneracy of the critical point is allowed.
Given the Laplacian on a planar, convex domain with piecewise linear boundary subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, we provide a sufficient condition for its lowest eigenvalue to dominate the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian with the complementary boundary conditions (i.e. with Dirichlet replaced by Neumann and vice versa). The application of this result to triangles gives an affirmative partial answer to a recent conjecture. Moreover, we prove a further observation of similar flavor for right triangles.
We consider the following singularly perturbed elliptic problem $$ \varepsilon^2\triangle\tilde{u}-\tilde{u}+\tilde{u}^p=0, \ \tilde{u}>0\quad \mbox{in} \ Ω,\ \ \ \frac{\partial\tilde{u}}{\partial \mathbf{n}}=0 \quad \mbox{on}\ \partialΩ, $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth boundary, $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter, $\mathbf{n}$ denotes the inward normal of $ \partialΩ$ and the exponent $p>1$. Let $Γ$ be a hypersurface intersecting $\partialΩ$ in the right angle along its boundary $\partialΓ$ and satisfying a {\em non-degenerate condition}. We establish the existe…
We consider a singularly perturbed problem with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\R^{n}$ whose boundary has an $(n-2)$-dimensional singularity. Assuming $1<p<\frac{n+2}{n-2}$, we prove that, under suitable geometric conditions on the boundary of the domain, there exist solutions which approach the intersection of the Neumann and the Dirichlet parts as the singular perturbation parameter tends to zero.
In his deep and prolific investigations of heat diffusion, Lamé was led to the investigation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator in an equilateral triangle. In particular he derived explicit results for the Dirichlet and Neumann cases using an ingenious change of variables. The relevant eigenfunctions are complicated infinite series in terms of his variables. Here we first show that boundary value problems with simple boundary conditions, such as the Dirichlet and the Neumann problems, can be solved in an elementary manner. In particular for these problems, the unknow…
We derive relationships between the shape deformation of an impenetrable obstacle and boundary measurements of scattering fields on the perturbed shape itself. Our derivation is rigourous by using systematic way, based on layer potential techniques and the field expansion (FE) method (formal derivation). We extend these techniques to derive asymptotic expansions of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DNO) and Neumann-to-Dirichlet (NDO) operators in terms of the small perturbations of the obstacle as well as relationships between the shape deformation of an obstacle and boundary measurements of DNO or ND…
Let (M,g) be a smooth compact, n dimensional Riemannian manifold, n=3,4 with smooth n-1 dimensional boundary. We search the positive solutions of the singularly perturbed Klein Gordon Maxwell Proca system with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions or for the singularly perturbed Klein Gordon Maxwell system with mixed Dirichlet Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions. We prove that stable critical points of the mean curvature of the boundary generates solutions when the perturbation parameter is sufficiently small.
We consider the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for second-order linear elliptic equations: \[ -\triangle u +\mathrm{div}(u\mathbf{b}) =f \quad\text{ and }\quad -\triangle v -\mathbf{b} \cdot \nabla v =g \] in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ $(n\geq 3)$, where $\mathbf{b}:Ω\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ is a given vector field. Under the assumption that $\mathbf{b} \in L^{n}(Ω)^n$, we first establish existence and uniqueness of solutions in $L_α^{p}(Ω)$ for the Dirichlet and Neumann problems. Here $L_α^{p}(Ω)$ denotes the Sobolev space (or Bessel potential space) with the pair $(α,p…
We consider a perforated domain $Ω(ε)$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a small hole of size $ε$ and we study the behavior of the solution of a mixed Neumann-Robin problem in $Ω(ε)$ as the size $ε$ of the small hole tends to $0$. In addition to the geometric degeneracy of the problem, the $ε$-dependent Robin condition may degenerate into a Neumann condition for $ε=0$ and the Robin datum may diverge to infinity. Our goal is to analyze the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to the problem as $ε$ tends to $0$ and understand how the boundary condition affects the behavior of the solutions when $ε$ is clos…
We study spectral properties for $H_{K,Ω}$, the Krein--von Neumann extension of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ defined on $C^\infty_0(Ω)$, where $V$ is measurable, bounded and nonnegative, in a bounded open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ belonging to a class of nonsmooth domains which contains all convex domains, along with all domains of class $C^{1,r}$, $r>1/2$. In particular, in the aforementioned context we establish the Weyl asymptotic formula \[ #\{j\in\mathbb{N} | λ_{K,Ω,j}\leqλ\} = (2π)^{-n} v_n |Ω| λ^{n/2}+O\big(λ^{(n-(1/2))/2}\big) {as} λ\to\infty, \] where $v_n=π^{n/2}/ Γ((n/2)+1)$ deno…
Rough surface scattering problems are always very challenging both theoretically and numerically. In this paper, we adopt the Bloch transform and the perturbation theory to investigate a special case, i.e., when the rough surface is a slight perturbation of a periodic one. Based on known results from the Bloch transform, the problem could be written into an equivalent bounded variational problem in higher dimensional spaces. The first step is to consider the non-perturbed problem. From the perturbation theory, the solution could be written as a Neumann series. The second step is to consider th…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a bounded domain. We perturb it to a domain $Ω^\varepsilon$ attaching a family of small protuberances with "room-and-passage"-like geometry ($\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter). Peculiar spectral properties of Neumann problems in so perturbed domains were observed for the first time by R. Courant and D. Hilbert. We study the case, when the number of protuberances tends to infinity as $\varepsilon\to 0$ and they are $\varepsilon$-periodically distributed along a part of $\partialΩ$. Our goal is to describe the behaviour of the spectrum of the operator $\mathcal{A…
This article offers a study of the Calderón type inverse problem of determining up to second order coefficients of the higher order elliptic operator. Here we show that it is possible to determine an anisotropic second order perturbation given by a symmetric matrix, along with a first order perturbation given by a vector field and a zero-th order potential function inside a bounded domain by measuring the Dirichlet to Neumann map of the perturbed biharmonic operator on the boundary of that domain.
It is widely known that the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian is stable under small perturbations of a domain, while in the case of the Neumann or mixed boundary conditions the spectrum may abruptly change. In this work we discuss an example of such a domain perturbation. Let $Ω$ be a (not {necessarily} bounded) domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We perturb it to $ Ω_\varepsilon=Ω\setminus \cup_{k=1}^m S_{k,\varepsilon},$ where $S_{k,\varepsilon}$ are closed surfaces with small suitably scaled holes (``windows'') through which the bounded domains enclosed by these surfaces (``resonators'') are connec…
We study spectral stability of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ when the underlying domain is perturbed. In particular, we establish upper semi-continuity properties for the variational eigenvalues of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian on bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, lower semi-continuity properties on pseudoconvex domains that satisfy property ($P$), and quantitative estimates on smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains of finite D'Angelo type in $\mathbb{C}^n$.

In this paper we study the shape of least-energy solutions to a singularly perturbed quasilinear problem with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We use an intrinsic variation method to show that at limit, the global maximum point of least-energy solutions goes to a point on the boundary faster than the linear rate and this point on the boundary approaches to a point where the mean curvature of the boundary achieves its maximum. We also give a complete proof of exponential decay of least-energy solutions.
Segregated direct boundary-domain integral equations (BDIEs) based on a parametrix and associated with the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems for the linear stationary diffusion partial differential equation with a variable coefficient are formulated. The PDE right hand sides belong to the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(Ω)$ or $\tilde H^{-1}(Ω)$, when neither classical nor canonical co-normal derivatives are well defined. Equivalence of the BDIEs to the original BVP, BDIE solvability, solution uniqueness/non-uniqueness, and as well as Fredholm property and invertibility of the BDIE operators…
The object of this paper is twofold: In the first part, we unify and extend the recent developments on honesty theory of perturbed substochastic semigroups (on $L^{1}(μ)$-spaces or noncommutative $L^{1}$ spaces) to general state spaces; this allows us to capture for instance a honesty theory in preduals of abstract von Neumann algebras or subspaces of duals of abstract $C^{\ast }$-algebras. In the second part of the paper, we provide another honesty theory (a semigroup-perturbation approach) independent of the previous resolvent-perturbation approach and show the equivalence of the two approac…
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of a bounded open set in $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, for the perturbed polyharmonic operator $(-Δ)^m+A\cdot D+q$, $m\ge 2$, with $n>m$, $A\in W^{-\frac{m-2}{2},\frac{2n}{m}}$ and $q\in W^{-\frac{m}{2}+δ,\frac{2n}{m}}$, with $0<δ<1/2$, determines the potentials $A$ and $q$ in the set uniquely. The proof is based on a Carleman estimate with linear weights and with a gain of two derivatives and on the property of products of functions in Sobolev spaces.
We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator (DNO) on nearly-circular and nearly-spherical domains in two and three dimensions, respectively. Treating such domains as perturbations of the ball, we prove the analyticity of the DNO with respect to the domain perturbation parameter. Consequently, the Steklov eigenvalues are also shown to be analytic in the domain perturbation parameter. To obtain these results, we use the strategy of Nicholls and Nigam (2004); we transform the equation on the perturbed domain to a ball and geometrically bound the Neumann expansion of the transformed Dirichlet-to…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a boundary value problem for the Laplace equation in a perforated domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, with a (nonlinear) Robin boundary condition on the boundary of the small hole. The problem we wish to consider degenerates under three aspects: in the limit case the Robin boundary condition may degenerate into a Neumann boundary condition, the Robin datum may tend to infinity, and the size $ε$ of the small hole where we consider the Robin condition collapses to $0$. We study how these three singularities interact and affect the asymptotic …
We examine Serrin's classical overdetermined problem under a perturbation of the Neumann boundary condition. The solution of the problem for a constant Neumann boundary condition exists provided that the underlying domain is a ball. The question arises whether for a perturbation of the constant there still are domains admitting solutions to the problem. Furthermore, one may ask whether a domain that admits a solution for the perturbed problem is unique up to translation and whether it is close to the ball. We develop a new implicit function theorem for a pair of Banach triplets that is applica…
We consider the spectral Neumann problem for the Laplace operator in an acoustic waveguide $Π_{l}^{\varepsilon}$ obtained from a straight unit strip by a low box-shaped perturbation of size $2l\times\varepsilon,$ where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter. We prove the existence of the length parameter $l_{k}^{\varepsilon}=πk+O\left( \varepsilon\right) $ with any $k=1,2,3,...$ such that the waveguide $Π_{l_{k}^{\varepsilon}}^{\varepsilon }$ supports a trapped mode with an eigenvalue $λ_{k}^{\varepsilon}% =π^{2}-4π^{4}l^{2}\varepsilon^{2}+O\left( \varepsilon^{3}\right) $ embedded into the conti…
In this article, we study the impact of a change in the type of boundary conditions of an elliptic boundary value problem. In the context of the conductivity equation we consider a reference problem with mixed homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Two different perturbed versions of this ``background'' situation are investigated, when (i) The homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is replaced by a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on a ``small'' subset $ω_\varepsilon$ of the Neumann boundary; and when (ii) The homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is replaced by a ho…
We present a time dependent quantum perturbation result, uniform in the Planck constant, for perturbations of potentials whose gradients are Lipschitz continuous by potentials whose gradients are only bounded a.e.. Though this low regularity of the full potential is not enough to provide the existence of the classical underlying dynamics, at variance with the quantum one, our result shows that the classical limit of the perturbed quantum dynamics remains in a tubular neighbourhood of the classical unperturbed one of size of order of the square root of the size of the perturbation. We treat bot…
