In this letter, we demonstrate a mapper that enables all waveforms of OFDM with Index Modulation (OFDM-IM) while preserving polynomial time and space computational complexities. Enabling all OFDM-IM waveforms maximizes the spectral efficiency (SE) gain over the classic OFDM but, as far as we know, the computational overhead of the resulting mapper remains conjectured as prohibitive across the OFDM-IM literature. We show that the largest number of binomial coefficient calculations performed by the original OFDM-IM mapper is polynomial on the number of subcarriers, even under the setup that maximizes the SE gain over OFDM. Also, such coefficients match the entries of the so-called Pascal's triangle (PT). Thus, by assisting the OFDM-IM mapper with a PT table, we show that the maximum SE gain over OFDM can be achieved under polynomial (rather than exponential) time and space complexities.
In this communication, we propose a framework for amalgamating optical-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) and O-OFDM with index modulation (O-OFDM-IM) for optical wireless systems. Both schemes individually have some limitations, e.g., O-OFDM does not provide any granularity for spectral efficiency (SE)/energy efficiency (EE) trade-off, and O-OFDM-IM loses EE for higher order modulation alphabets. By combining O-OFDM and O-OFDM-IM together, the above limitations can be circumvented. Following on from providing the general framework, we use asymmetrically clipped (AC)O-OFDM and…
A novel transmission scheme is introduced for efficient data transmission by conveying additional information bits through jointly changing the index and number of active subcarriers within each orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subblock. The proposed scheme is different from the conventional OFDM-subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) and OFDM-index modulation (OFDM-IM), in which data bits are transmitted using either number or index of active subcarriers. The proposed modulation technique offers superior spectral and energy efficiency compared to its counterparts OFDM-SNM an…
In this paper, a novel modulation scheme called set partition modulation (SPM) is proposed. In this scheme, set partitioning and ordered subsets in the set partitions are used to form codewords. We define different SPM variants and depict a practical model for using SPM with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). For the OFDM-SPM schemes, different constellations are used to distinguish between different subsets in a set partition. To achieve good distance properties as well as better error performance for the OFDM-SPM codewords, we define a codebook selection problem and formulate…
The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing based M-ary Frequency Shift Keying (OFDM-MFSK) is a noncoherent modulation scheme which merges MFSK with the OFDM waveform. It is designed to improve the receiver sensitivity in the hard environments where channel estimation is very difficult to perform. In this paper, the OFDM-MFSK is suggested for the smart metering technology and its performance is measured and compared with the ordinary OFDM-BPSK. Our results show that, depending on the MFSK size value (M), the Packet Error Rate (PER) has dramatically improved for OFDM-MFSK. Additionally, the …
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) manifests its superior nature of high spectral efficiency (SE) and low complexity for signal estimation. To exploit the spatial gain of OFDM-SNM, we propose a relay assisted OFDM-SNM scheme for multi-hop cooperative systems in this letter. It is stipulated that a relay operated by decode-and-forward (DF) and half-duplex (HD) protocols exists in each hop. We analyze the outage performance of the relay assisted OFDM-SNM system. The average outage probability is approximated in closed form. Moreover, to…
In this paper, we propose an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based generalized optical quadrature spatial modulation (GOQSM) technique for multiple-input multiple-output optical wireless communication (MIMO-OWC) systems. Considering the error propagation and noise amplification effects when applying maximum likelihood and maximum ratio combining (ML-MRC)-based detection, we further propose a deep neural network (DNN)-aided detection for OFDM-based GOQSM systems. The proposed DNN-aided detection scheme performs the GOQSM detection in a joint manner, which can efficiently elimi…
In this work, we present an optimal mapper for OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM). By optimal we mean the mapper achieves the lowest possible asymptotic computational complexity (CC) when the spectral efficiency (SE) gain over OFDM maximizes. We propose the spectro-computational (SC) analysis to capture the trade-off between CC and SE and to demonstrate that an $N$-subcarrier OFDM-IM mapper must run in exact $Θ(N)$ time complexity. We show that an OFDM-IM mapper running faster than such complexity cannot reach the maximal SE whereas one running slower nullifies the mapping throughput for arb…
Communication using orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes has recently received a considerable interest in free space optical (FSO) communications. Propagating OAM modes through free space may be subject to atmospheric turbulence (AT) distortions that cause signal attenuation and crosstalk which degrades the system capacity and increases the error probability. In this paper, we propose to enhance the OAM FSO communications in terms of bit error rate and spectral efficiency, for different levels of AT regimes. The performance gain is achieved by introducing orthogonal frequency division multiple…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based reflection modulation has been considered as a promising information delivery mechanism, and has the potential to realize passive information transfer of a RIS without consuming any additional radio frequency chain and time/frequency/energy resources. The existing on-off reflection modulation (ORM) schemes are based on manipulating the "on/off" states of RIS elements, which may lead to the degradation of RIS reflection efficiency. This paper proposes a frequency reflection modulation (FRM) method for RIS-aided OFDM systems. The FRM-OFDM scheme mod…
In this paper, we propose a novel orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) scheme, which we call Q-ary multi-mode OFDM-IM (Q-MM-OFDM-IM). In the proposed scheme, Q disjoint M-ary constellations are used repeatedly on each subcarrier, and a maximum-distance separable code is applied to the indices of these constellations to achieve the highest number of index symbols. A low-complexity subcarrier-wise detection is shown possible for the proposed scheme. Spectral efficiency (SE) and the error rate performance of the proposed scheme are further analyzed. It is sho…
In this paper, we propose novel modulation concepts that we call weak composition modulation (WCM) and composition modulation (CM). We use weak and strict compositions of an integer to form codewords of WCM and CM, respectively. For the proposed schemes, we depict a practical model using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). We also analyze the error performance of the proposed schemes. It is shown that the proposed schemes are capable of outperforming conventional OFDM and OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) in terms of error performance.
With the emergence of new applications (e.g., extended reality and haptics), which require to be simultaneously served not just with low latency and sufficient reliability, but also with high spectral efficiency, future networks (i.e., 6G) should be capable of meeting this demand by introducing new effective transmission designs. Motivated by this, a novel modulation technique termed as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with subcarrier power modulation (OFDM-SPM) is proposed for providing highly spectral-efficient data transmission with low-latency and less-complexity for future 6G wi…
In this paper, we propose a novel modulation concept which we call \emph{index and composition modulation (ICM)}. In the proposed concept, we use indices of active/deactive codeword elements and compositions of an integer to encode information. In this regard, we first determine the activated codeword elements, then we exploit energy levels of these elements to identify the compositions. We depict a practical scheme for using ICM with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and show that OFDM with ICM (OFDM-ICM) can enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) and error performance of OFDM-I…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation (OFDM-IM) appears as a promising multi-carrier waveform candidate for beyond 5G due to its attractive advantages such as operational flexibility and ease of implementation. However, OFDM-IM may not be a proper choice for 5G services such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) since achieving high data rates is challenging because of its null subcarriers. One solution to enhance the spectral efficiency of OFDM-IM is the employment of multiple distinguishable constellations (modes) by also exploiting its null subcarriers for da…
A novel dual-function radar communication (DFRC) system is proposed, that achieves high target resolution and high communication rate. It consists of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, where only a small number of antennas are active in each channel use. The probing waveforms are orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) type. The OFDM carriers are divided into two groups, one that is used by the active antennas in a shared fashion, and another one, where each subcarrier is assigned to an active antenna in an exclusive fashion (private subcarriers). Target estimation is car…
In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based signal detector called DuaIM-3DNet for dual-mode index modulation-based three-dimensional (3D) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DM-IM-3D-OFDM). Herein, DM-IM-3D- OFDM is a subcarrier index modulation scheme which conveys data bits via both dual-mode 3D constellation symbols and indices of active subcarriers. Thus, this scheme obtains better error performance than the existing IM schemes when using the conventional maximum likelihood (ML) detector, which, however, suffers from high computational complexity, especially when the system pa…
A novel modulation scheme termed orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been proposed and regarded as one of the promising candidate modulation schemes for next generation networks. Although OFDM-SNM is capable of having a higher spectral efficiency (SE) than OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) and plain OFDM under certain conditions, its reliability is relatively inferior to these existing schemes, because the number of active subcarriers varies. In this regard, we propose an enhanced OFDM-SNM scheme in this paper, which utilizes the flexi…
This paper proposes a novel spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulation (SS-SIM) scheme, which is integrated to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework to enhance the diversity over the conventional IM schemes. Particularly, the resulting scheme, called SS-SIMOFDM, jointly employs both spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulations to form a precoding vector which is then used to spread an M-ary complex symbol across all active sub-carriers. As a result, the proposed scheme enables a novel transmission of three signal domains: SS and sub-carrier indices, and a singl…
In this paper, deep neural network (DNN) is integrated with spatial modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SM-OFDM) technique for end-to-end data detection over Rayleigh fading channel. This proposed system directly demodulates the received symbols, leaving the channel estimation done only implicitly. Furthermore, an ensemble network is also proposed for this system. Simulation results show that the proposed DNN detection scheme has a significant advantage over classical methods when the pilot overhead and cyclic prefix (CP) are reduced, owing to its ability to learn and adjust…
The performance analysis of a novel optical modulation scheme is presented in this paper. The basic concept is to transmit signs of modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) symbols and absolute values of the symbols separately by two information carrying units: 1) indices of two light emitting diodes (LED) transmitters that represent positive and negative signs separately; and 2) optical intensity symbols that carry the absolute values of signals. The new approach, referred as to non-DC-biased OFDM (NDC-OFDM), uses the optical spatial modulation (OSM) technique to …
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is envisioned as an efficient candidate for future communication systems. This letter proposes a novel orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation (IM)-based NOMA scheme, called OFDM-IM NOMA, for future multi-user communication systems. Inspired by IM and classical OFDM-NOMA, users utilize flexibility by adjusting power allocation factors and subcarrier activation ratios. Our new scheme allows different service users to share available resources as in classical NOMA, more efficiently. It is shown that OFDM-IM NOMA reliably suppo…
To broaden the application scenario and reduce energy consumption, we propose an energy-efficient fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay assisted orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) scheme in this letter. The proposed system needs neither instantaneous channel state information (CSI) nor complicated processing at the relay node. It operates based on the power allocation scheme that minimizes the sum of transmit power at both source and relay node, given an outage probability constraint. Through a series of problem transformation and simplification…
In this letter, we propose a power allocation scheme for relayed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) systems. The proposed power allocation scheme replies on artificial neural network (ANN) and deep learning to allocate transmit power among various subcarriers at the source and relay nodes. The objective of the power allocation scheme is to minimize the overall transmit power under a set of constraints. Without loss of generality, we assume all subcarriers at source and relay nodes are independently distributed with different statistical distribution para…
Index modulation (IM) brings the reduction of power consumption and complexity of the transmitter to classical multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. However, due to the introduction of IM, the complexity of the detector at receiver is greatly increased. Furthermore, the detector also requires the channel state information at receiver, which leads to high system overhead. To tackle these challenges, in this paper, we introduce deep learning (DL) in designing a non-iterative detector. Specifically, based on the structural sparsity of the t…
Side-effect modulation (SEM) has the potential to be a significant source of interference in future visible light communication (VLC) systems. SEM is a variation in the intensity of the light emitted by a luminaire and is usually a side-effect caused by the power supply used to drive the luminaires. For LED luminaires powered by a switched mode power supply, the SEM can be at much higher frequencies than that emitted by conventional incandescent or fluorescent lighting. It has been shown that the SEM caused by commercially available LED luminaires is often periodic and of low power. In this pa…
In the past few years, some alternatives to the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation have been considered to improve its spectral containment and its performance level in the presence of heavy Doppler shifts. This paper examines a novel modulation, named Doppler-Resilient Universal Filtered MultiCarrier (DR-UFMC), which has the objective of combining the advantages provided by the Universal Filtered MultiCarrier (UFMC) modulation (i.e., better spectral containment), with those of the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation (i.e., better performance in time-var…
Spatial modulation (SM) has proven to be a promising multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technique which provides high energy efficiency and reduces system complexity. In SM, only one transmitter is active at any given time while the rest of them remain silent. The index of the active transmitter carries information. This spatial information is in addition to the data carried by the constellation symbols in the signal domain. Therefore, SM increases the transmission rate of the communication system compared to single-input-single-output and space-time block coding (STBC)-MIMO. For signal dom…
In this paper, we propose an enhanced Huffman coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (EHC-OFDM-IM) scheme. The proposed scheme is capable of utilizing all legitimate subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and adapting the bijective mapping relation between SAPs and leaves on a given Huffman tree according to channel state information (CSI). As a result, a dynamic codebook update mechanism is obtained, which can provide more reliable transmissions. We take the average block error rate (BLER) as the performance evaluation metric and approximate it in closed form wh…
Index modulation (IM) is one of the candidate technologies for the upcoming sixth generation (6G) wireless communications networks. In this paper, we propose a space-time-modulated reconfigurable intelligent metasurface (RI-MTS) that is configured to implement various frequency-domain IM techniques in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array configuration. Unlike prior works which mostly analyze signal theory of general RI-MTS IM, we present novel electromagnetics-compliant designs of specific IMs such as sub-carrier index modulation (SIM) and MIMO orthogonal frequency-domain modulation I…
In this survey, we analyze the newest machine learning (ML) techniques for optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM)-based optical communications. ML has been proposed to mitigate channel and transceiver imperfections. For instance, ML can improve the signal quality under low modulation extinction ratio or can tackle both determinist and stochastic-induced nonlinearities such as parametric noise amplification in long-haul transmission. The proposed ML algorithms for O-OFDM can in particularly tackle inter-subcarrier nonlinear effects such as four-wave mixing and cross-phase m…
A novel OFDM-based waveform with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and high robustness against phase noise (PN) is presented. It follows the discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) signal model. 3MSK, is inspired by continuous-phase frequency shift keying (FSK), but it uses three frequencies in the baseband model -- specifically, 0 and $\pm f_{symbol}/4$, where $f_{symbol}$ is the symbol rate -- which effectively constrains the phase transitions between consecutive symbols to 0 and $\pm π/2$ rad. Motivated by the phase controlled model of …
In this study, we propose a wideband index modulation (IM) based on circularly-shifted chirps. To derive the proposed method, we first prove that a Golay complementary pair (GCP) can be constructed by linearly combining the Fourier series of chirps. We show that Fresnel integrals and/or Bessel functions, arising from sinusoidal and linear chirps, respectively, can lead to GCPs. We then exploit discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) to obtain a low-complexity transmitter and receiver. We also discuss its generalization for achieving a trade-off…

One of the main open problems for next generation wireless networks, is to find the new OFDM-based waveform to be used in 5G. The new modulation scheme must primarily be able to achieve higher spectral efficiency than its predecessor. The main 3GPP's candidate is a new version of OFDM, called Filtered Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (f-OFDM), which is similar to OFDM but with additional filtering in order to reduce Out-Of-Band (OOB) emissions and to obtain a better spectral-localization. Another option is windowed-OFDM (w-OFDM), which is basically a classical OFDM scheme where each …
A relatively simple low complexity multiuser communication system based on simultaneous code and frequency index modulation (CFIM) is proposed in this paper. The proposed architecture reduces the emitted energy at the transmitter as well as the peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)- based schemes functions without relegating data rate. In the scheme we introduce here, we implement a joint code- frequency- index modulation (CFIM) in order to enhance spectral and energy efficiencies. After introducing and analysing the structure with respect to l…
Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) over orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals has recently been proposed as an appealing technique for low power Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. The special spectrum structure of OFDM signals provides a range of flexibility in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) performance, data rate, and power consumption. In this paper, we study subcarrier-wise backscatter communication over ambient OFDM signals. This new AmBC is to exploit the special spectrum structure of OFDM to transmit data over its squeezed orthogonal subcarriers. We propose a…
This paper investigates the radar Ambiguity Function (AF) properties of Constant Envelope Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CE-OFDM) waveforms employing Phase-Shift Keying (PSK). The CE-OFDM is in fact a special case of the Multi-Tone Sinusoidal Frequency Modulated (MTSFM) waveform which allows for applying many of the same mathematical techniques of the MTSFM model to the CE-OFDM model. This results in novel compact closed-form expressions for the spectrum, AF, and Auto-Correlation Function (ACF) of the CE-OFDM waveform. The mainlobe structure of the CE-OFDM's AF is characterized by…
