A simple generalization of the Hall's condition in bipartite graphs, the Normalized Matching Property (NMP) in a graph $G(X,Y,E)$ with vertex partition $(X,Y)$ states that for any subset $S\subseteq X$, we have $\frac{|N(S)|}{|Y|}\ge\frac{|S|}{|X|}$. In this paper, we show the following results about having the Normalized Matching Property in random and pseudorandom graphs.
1. We establish $p=\frac{\log n}{k}$ as a sharp threshold for having NMP in $\mathbb{G}(k,n,p)$, which is the graph with $|X|=k,|Y|=n$ (assuming $k\le n\leq \exp(o(k))$), and in which each pair $(x,y)\in X\times Y$ is an edge independently with probability $p$. This generalizes a classic result of Erdős-Rényi on the $\frac{\log n}{n}$ threshold for having a perfect matching in $\mathbb{G}(n,n,p)$.
2. We also show that a pseudorandom bipartite graph - upon deletion of a vanishingly small fraction of vertices - admits NMP, provided it is not too sparse. More precisely, a bipartite graph $G(X,Y)$, with $k=|X|\le |Y|=n$, is said to be Thomason pseudorandom (following A. Thomason (Discrete Math., 1989)) with parameters $(p,\varepsilon)$ if each $x\in X$ has degree at least $pn$ and each pair of distinct $x, x'\in X$ has at most $(1+\varepsilon)p^2n$ common neighbors. We show that for any large enough $(p,\varepsilon)$-Thomason pseudorandom graph $G(X,Y)$, there are "tiny" subsets $\mathrm{Del}_X\subset X, \ \mathrm{Del}_Y\subset Y$ such that the subgraph $G(X\setminus \mathrm{Del}_X,Y\setminus \mathrm{Del}_Y)$ has NMP, provided $p \gg\tfrac{1}{k}$. En route, we prove an "almost" vertex decomposition theorem: Every such Thomason pseudorandom graph admits - excluding a negligible portion of its vertex set - a partition of its vertex set into graphs that we call Euclidean trees. These are trees that have NMP, and which arise organically through the Euclidean GCD algorithm.
Let $X=(V, E)$ be a finite regular graph and $H_t(u, v), \, u, v \in V$, the heat kernel on $X$. We prove that, if the graph $X$ is bipartite and has four distinct Laplacian eigenvalues, the ratio $H_t(u, v)/H_t(u, u), \, u, v \in V,$ is monotonically non-decreasing as a function of $t$. The key to the proof is the fact that such a graph is an incidence graph of a symmetric 2-design.
In [Steve Butler. A note about cospectral graphs for the adjacency and normalized Laplacian matrices. Linear Multilinear Algebra, 58(3-4):387-390, 2010.], Butler constructed a family of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. In this article, we extend this construction for generating larger classes of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. Also, we provide a couple of constructions of non-bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for the adjacency matrices but not necessaril…
We study the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator of a connected graph $Γ$. As is well known, the smallest nontrivial eigenvalue measures how difficult it is to decompose $Γ$ into two large pieces, whereas the largest eigenvalue controls how close $Γ$ is to being bipartite. The smallest eigenvalue can be controlled by the Cheeger constant, and we establish a dual construction that controls the largest eigenvalue. Moreover, we find that the neighborhood graphs $Γ[l]$ of order $l\geq2$ encode important spectral information about $Γ$ itself which we systematically explore. In particular, t…
We give a method to construct cospectral graphs for the normalized Laplacian by a local modification in some graphs with special structure. Namely, under some simple assumptions, we can replace a small bipartite graph with a cospectral mate without changing the spectrum of the entire graph. We also consider a related result for swapping out biregular bipartite graphs for the matrix $A+tD$. We produce (exponentially) large families of non-bipartite, non-regular graphs which are mutually cospectral, and also give an example of a graph which is cospectral with its complement but is not self-compl…
This paper is the second chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. In this paper, we consider the random matrix ensemble given by $(d_b, d_w)$-regular graphs on $M$ black vertices and $N$ white vertices, where $d_b \in [N^γ, N^{2/3 - γ}]$ for any $γ> 0$. We simultaneously prove that the bulk eigenvalue correlation statistics for both normalized adjacency matrices and their corresponding covariance matrices are stable for short times. Combined with an ergodicity analysis of the Dyson Brownian motion in another paper, this proves universality of bulk eigenvalue correlation statistic…
In this paper, we characterize all connected graphs with exactly three distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of which one is equal to $1$, determine all connected bipartite graphs with at least one vertex of degree $1$ having exactly four distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues, and find all unicyclic graphs with three or four distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues.
We give a combinatorial characterization of graphs whose normalized Laplacian has three distinct eigenvalues. Strongly regular graphs and complete bipartite graphs are examples of such graphs, but we also construct more exotic families of examples from conference graphs, projective planes, and certain quasi-symmetric designs.
The atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index is a well-known degree-based molecular structure descriptor with a variety of chemical applications. In 2010 Graovac and Ghorbani introduced a distance-based analog of this index, the Graovac-Ghorbani (GG) index, which yielded promising results when compared to analogous descriptors. In this paper, we investigate the structure of graphs that maximize and minimize the GG index. Specifically, we show that amongst all bipartite graphs, the minimum GG index is attained by a complete bipartite graph, while the maximum GG index is attained by a path or a cycle-…
A subset $S$ of initially infected vertices of a graph $G$ is called forcing if we can infect the entire graph by iteratively applying the following process. At each step, any infected vertex which has a unique uninfected neighbour, infects this neighbour. The forcing number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a forcing set in $G$. In the present paper, we study the forcing number of various classes of graphs, including graphs of large girth, $H$-free graphs for a fixed bipartite graph $H$, random and pseudorandom graphs.
Let $G$ be a finite, undirected $d$-regular graph and $A(G)$ its normalized adjacency matrix, with eigenvalues $1 = λ_1(A)\geq \dots \ge λ_n \ge -1$. It is a classical fact that $λ_n = -1$ if and only if $G$ is bipartite. Our main result provides a quantitative separation of $λ_n$ from $-1$ in the case of Cayley graphs, in terms of their expansion. Denoting $h_{out}$ by the (outer boundary) vertex expansion of $G$, we show that if $G$ is a non-bipartite Cayley graph (constructed using a group and a symmetric generating set of size $d$) then $λ_n \ge -1 + ch_{out}^2/d^2\,,$ for $c$ an absolute …
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $N$. The normalized Laplacian Estrada index of $G$ is defined as $NEE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^Ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,λ_2,\cdots,λ_N$ are the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we give a tight lower bound for $NEE$ of general graphs. We also calculate $NEE$ for a class of treelike fractals, which contain some classical chemical trees as special cases. It is shown that $NEE$ scales linearly with the order of the fractal, in line with a best possible lower bound for connected bipartite graphs.
We perform a detailed computational study of the recently introduced Sombor indices on random graphs. Specifically, we apply Sombor indices on three models of random graphs: Erdös-Rényi graphs, random geometric graphs, and bipartite random graphs. Within a statistical random matrix theory approach, we show that the average values of Sombor indices, normalized to the order of the graph, scale with the graph average degree. Moreover, we discuss the application of average Sombor indices as complexity measures of random graphs and, as a consequence, we show that selected normalized Sombor indices …
We propose the notion of normalized Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ for a gain graphs and study its properties in detail, providing insights and counterexamples along the way. We establish bounds for the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ and characterize the classes of graphs for which equality holds. The relationships between the balancedness, bipartiteness, and their connection to the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ are also studied. Besides, we extend the edge version of eigenvalue interlacing for the gain graphs. Thereupon, we determine the coefficients for the characteristic polynomial of $\…
We prove the following estimate for the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator $Δ$ on a finite graph $G$, \begin{equation*}1- (1- k[t])^{\frac{1}{t}}\leq λ_1 \leq \cdots \leq λ_{N-1}\leq 1+ (1- k[t])^{\frac{1}{t}}, \,\forall \,\,\text{integers}\,\, t\geq 1. \end{equation*} Here $k[t]$ is a lower bound for the Ollivier-Ricci curvature on the neighborhood graph $G[t]$, which was introduced by Bauer-Jost. In particular, when $t=1$ this is Ollivier's estimates $k\leq λ_1\leq \ldots \leq λ_{N-1}\leq 2-k$. For sufficiently large $t$ we show that, unless $G$ is bipartite, our estimates for $λ_1$…
We introduce the matching measure of a finite graph as the uniform distribution on the roots of the matching polynomial of the graph. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the matching measure for graph sequences with bounded degree. A graph parameter is said to be estimable if it converges along every Benjamini-Schramm convergent sparse graph sequence. We prove that the normalized logarithm of the number of matchings is estimable. We also show that the analogous statement for perfect matchings already fails for d-regular bipartite graphs for any fixed d at least 3. The latter result relies on…
Let $\mc{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph is {\em $\mc{F}$-free} if it contains no copy of a graph in $\mc{F}$ as a subgraph. A cornerstone of extremal graph theory is the study of the {\em Turán number} $ex(n,\mc{F})$, the maximum number of edges in an $\mc{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Define the {\em Zarankiewicz number} $z(n,\mc{F})$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $\mc{F}$-free {\em bipartite} graph on $n$ vertices. Let $C_k$ denote a cycle of length $k$, and let $\mc{C}_k$ denote the set of cycles $C_{\ell}$, where $3 \le \ell \leq k$ and $\ell$ and $k$ have the same parity. …
For a given graph, $G$, let $A$ be the adjacency matrix, $D$ is the diagonal matrix of degrees, $L' = D - A$ is the combinatorial Laplacian, and $L = D^{-1/2}L'D^{-1/2}$ is the normalized Laplacian. Recently, the eigenvectors corresponding to the smallest eigenvalues of $L$ and $L'$ have been of great interest because of their application to community detection, which is a nebulously defined problem that essentially seeks to find a vertex set $S$ such that there are few edges incident with exactly one vertex of $S$. The connection between community detection and the second smallest eigenvalue …
For any graph, we define a rank-1 operator on a bipartite tensor product space, with components associated to the set of vertices and edges respectively. We show that the partial traces of the operator are the Laplacian and the edge-Laplacian. This provides an interpretation of the von Neumann entropy of the (normalized)\ Laplacian as the amount of quantum entanglement between two systems corresponding to vertices and edges. In this framework, cospectral graphs correspond exactly to local unitarily equivalent pure states. Finally, we introduce the notion of coentropic graphs, that is, graphs w…
We study the symmetry properties of the spectra of normalized Laplacians on signed graphs. We find a new machinery that generates symmetric spectra for signed graphs, which includes bipartiteness of unsigned graphs as a special case. Moreover, we prove a fundamental connection between the symmetry of the spectrum and the existence of damped two-periodic solutions for the discrete-time heat equation on the graph.
Adjacency polytopes appear naturally in the study of nonlinear emergent phenomena in complex networks. The "PQ-type" adjacency polytope, denoted $\nabla^{\mathrm{PQ}}_G$ and which is the focus of this work, encodes rich combinatorial information about power-flow solutions in sparse power networks that are studied in electric engineering. Of particular importance is the normalized volume of such an adjacency polytope, which provides an upper bound on the number of distinct power-flow solutions. In this article we show that the problem of computing normalized volumes for $\nabla^{\mathrm{PQ}}_G$…

In the noisy channel model from coding theory, we wish to detect errors introduced during transmission by optimizing various parameters of the code. Bennett, Dudek, and LaForge framed a variation of this problem in the language of alternating paths in edge-colored complete bipartite graphs in 2016. Here, we extend this problem to the random graph $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$. We seek the alternating connectivity, $κ_{r,\ell}(G)$, which is the maximum $t$ such that there is an $r$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that any pair of vertices is connected by $t$ internally disjoint and alternating (i.e. no consecuti…
