Compositional effects in NaK alloy clusters have been studied using bond order length strength notation and density functional theory calculations. The results reveal binding energy shifts of the NaK alloy clusters under different elemental compositions. Atomic arrangements that can be used to predict the structures of stable experimental NaK alloys were also obtained. Our study of these alloy nanoclusters has uncovered a trend correlating atomic position and composition with binding energy. We believe this data will help in the experimental preparation of alloy nanoclusters.
In this work, we study the equiatomic quaternary Heusler Alloy CoFeCrP using two methods: DFT and Monte Carlo simulations. The DFT method allowed us to illustrate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of this alloy. The ground state phase diagrams have been presented to show the stable configurations in different physical parameter planes. On the other hand, the Monte Carlo simulations, performed under the Metropolis algorithm, permitted to deduce the critical the behavior of the equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy CoFeCrP. The structural properties results show that the phase of …
We screen a large chemical space of perovskite alloys for systems with the right properties to accommodate a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in their composition-temperature phase diagram, a crucial feature for high piezoelectric performance. We start from alloy end-points previously identified in a high-throughput computational search. An interpolation scheme is used to estimate the relative energies between different perovskite distortions for alloy compositions with a minimum of computational effort. Suggested alloys are further screened for thermodynamic stability. The screening identifi…
First-principles-based materials screening is systematically performed to discover new combinations of chemical elements possibly making shape-memory alloys (SMAs). The B2, D03, and L21 crystal structures are considered as the parent phases, and the 2H and 6M structures are considered as the martensitic phases. 3,384 binary and 3,243 ternary alloys (6,627 in total) with stoichiometric composition ratios are investigated by the materials screening in terms of energetic and dynamical stabilities of the martensitic phases as well as structural compatibility between the parent and the martensitic …
Two-dimensional (2D) binary transition-metal chalcogenides (TMCs) like molybdenum disulfide exhibits excellent properties as materials for light adsorption devices. Alloying binary TMCs can form 2D compositionally complex TMC alloys (CCTMCAs) that possess remarkable properties from the constituent TMCs. We adopt a high-throughput workflow performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) model (VCA-DFT). We test the workflow by predicting properties including in-plane lattice constants, band gaps, effective masses, spin-orbit coupling (SOC…
The phase stability of fcc and bcc magnetic binary Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, Cr-Ni alloys and ternary Fe-Cr-Ni alloys is investigated using a combination of density functional theory (DFT), Cluster Expansion (CE) and Magnetic Cluster Expansion (MCE). Energies, magnetic moments, and volumes of more than 500 alloy structures are evaluated using DFT, and the most stable magnetic configurations are compared with experimental data. Deviations from the Vegard law in fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, associated with non-linear variation of atomic magnetic moments as functions of alloy composition, are observed. Accuracy of t…

In computational materials science, a common means for predicting macroscopic (e.g., mechanical) properties of an alloy is to define a model using combinations of descriptors that depend on some material properties (elastic constants, misfit volumes, etc.), representative for the macroscopic behavior. The material properties are usually computed using special quasi-random structures (SQSs), in tandem with density functional theory (DFT). However, DFT scales cubically with the number of atoms and is thus impractical for a screening over many alloy compositions. Here, we present a novel methodol…
The density functional theory (DFT)+U method based on the linear response (LR) theory was applied to investigate the electronic structures of Co-based ternary full Heusler alloy Co$_2Y$Si for exploring half-metallic (HM) ferromagnets with a wide HM gap. The LR-based DFT+U calculations tend to obtain a reasonable correlation parameter for $Y$ site, while the correlation of Co site misleads to the unphysical ground state due to the overestimated parameter value that arises from the delocalized electronic structure of Co. Furthermore, we found that the HM gap of Co$_2$MnSi originates from Co $e_u…
In the Letter [J. Nucl. Mater. 444, 356 (2014)] and Comment [Phys Rev B 90, 157101 (2014)], Soderlind et al. argue that 1) DFT based on GGA already models U metal and U-Zr alloy accurately, and 2) DFT + U models them worse than DFT according to results they calculate or select from our recent study [Phys. Rev. B 88, 235128 (2013)]. Here we demonstrate in response to 1) that previously neglected and more recent experimental data indicate that DFT, even when implemented in all-electron methods, does not model the bulk modulus and elastic constants of αU very accurately. Furthermore, Soderlind et…
Multi-principal-element alloys, including high-entropy alloys, experience segregation or partially-ordering as they are cooled to lower temperatures. For Ti$_{0.25}$CrFeNiAl$_{x}$, experiments suggest a partially-ordered B2 phase, whereas CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) predicts a region of L2$_{1}$+B2 coexistence. We employ first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) based electronic-structure approach to assess stability of phases of alloys with arbitrary compositions and Bravais lattices (A1/A2/A3). In addition, DFT-based linear-response theory has been utilized to predict Warr…
The design of corrosion-resistant high entropy alloys (CR-HEAs) is challenging due to the alloys' virtually astrological composition space. To facilitate this, efficient and reliable high-throughput exploratory approaches are needed. Toward this end, the current work reports a first-principles-based approach exploiting the correlations between work function, surface energy, and corrosion resistance (i.e., work function and surface energy are, by definitions, proportional and inversely proportional to an alloy's inherent corrosion resistance, respectively). Two Bayesian CALPHAD models (or datab…
Angular dependent core-hole screening effects have been found in the cobalt K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of LiCoO2, using high-resolution data and parameter-free GGA+U calculations. The Co 1s core-hole on the absorber causes strong local attraction. The core-hole screening on the nearest neighbours cobalt induces a 2 eV shift in the density of states with respect to the on-site 1s-3d transitions, as detected in the Co K pre-edge spectrum. Our DFT+U calculations reveal that the off-site screening is different in the out-of-plane direction, where a 3 eV shift is visible in both calculations …
Body-centered cubic (bcc) refractory multicomponent alloys are of great interest due to their remarkable strength at high temperatures. Meanwhile, further optimizing the chemical compositions of these alloys to achieve a combination of high strength and room-temperature ductility remains challenging, which would require systematic predictions of the correlated alloy properties across a vast compositional space. In the present work, we performed first-principles calculations with the special quasi-random structure (SQS) method to predict the unstable stacking fault energy ($γ_{usf}$) of the $(1…
Investigations of the Effects of Pressure on the Structural and Electronic Properties of Co$_2$VZ (Z = Al, Be) Full Heusler Alloy: A Comparative Study Using DFT
Dispersion corrected density functional theory ($ω$B97X-D DFT) method is used to study the molecular hydrogen adsorption in $Ni_nMg_m$ $(1\geq n\geq 3,1\geq m\geq9)$ clusters. All these clusters can effectively adsorb multiple $H_2$ in the preferred binding energy (BE) range between physisorption and chemisorption, i.e., $0.1 eV\geq BE \geq0.8 $eV. $H_2$ adsorption on $Ni_kMg_k$ (Ni:Mg=1:1), $Ni_kMg_{2k}$ (Ni:Mg=1:2) and $Ni_kMg_{3k}$ (Ni:Mg=1:3) (k=1-3) clusters shows fascinating behaviours in terms of Ni:Mg alloying ratio and cluster size. In each Ni:Mg ratio, the number of adsorbed $H_2$ in…
Core-level shifts and core-hole screening effects in alloy formation are studied ``ab initio'' by constrained-density-functional total-energy calculations. For our case study, the ordered intermetallic alloy MgAu, final-state effects are essential to account for the experimental Mg 1s shift, while they are negligible for Au 4f. We explain the differences in the screening by analyzing the calculated charge density response to the core hole perturbation.
Density functional theory based computational study has been conducted in order to investigate the effect of substitution of Cr and Co components by Si on the structure, mechanical, electronic, and magnetic properties of the high entropy alloy CrCoNiFe. It is found that the presence of a moderate concentration of Si substitutes (up to 12.5 %) does not significantly reduce the structural and mechanical stability of CrCoNiFe while it may modify its electronic and magnetic properties. Based on that, Si is proposed as a cheap and functional material for partial substitution of Cr or Co in CrCoNiFe…
Fe$_2$P alloys have been identified as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration at room-temperature and for custom magnetostatic applications. The intent of this study is to accurately characterize the magnetic ground state of the parent compound, Fe$_2$P, with two spectroscopic techniques, $μ$SR and NMR, in order to provide solid bases for further experimental analysis of Fe$_2$P-type transition metal based alloys. We perform zero applied field measurements using both techniques below the ferromagnetic transition $T_C=220~\mathrm K$. The experimental results are reproduced and interpre…
This paper studies the bond valence method (BVM) and its application in the non-isovalent semiconductor alloy (GaN)$_{\rm{1-x}}$(ZnO)$_{\rm{x}}$. Particular attention is paid to the role of short-range order (SRO). A physical interpretation based on atomic orbital interaction is proposed and examined by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Combining BVM with Monte-Carlo simulations and a DFT-based cluster expansion model, bond-length distributions and bond-angle variations are predicted. The correlation between bond valence and bond stiffness is also revealed. Finally the concept of b…
Predicting the ground state of alloy systems is challenging due to the large number of possible configurations. We identify an easily computed descriptor for the stability of binary surface alloys, the effective coordination number $\mathscr{E}$. We show that $\mathscr{E}(M)$ correlates well with the enthalpy of mixing, from density functional theory (DFT) calculations on $M_x$Au$_{1-x}$/Ru [$M$ = Mn or Fe]. At each $x$, the most favored structure has the highest [lowest] value of $\mathscr{E}(M)$ if the system is non-magnetic [ferromagnetic]. Importantly, little accuracy is lost upon replacin…
An exciting development over the past few decades has been the use of high-throughput computational screening as a means of identifying promising candidate materials for a variety of structural or functional properties. Experimentally, it is often found that the highest-performing materials contain substantial atomic site disorder. These are frequently overlooked in high-throughput computational searches however, due to difficulties in dealing with materials that do not possess simple, well-defined crystallographic unit cells. Here we demonstrate that the screening of magnetocaloric materials …
We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known exper…
Si$_{y}$Ge$_{1-x-y}$(C,Sn,Pb)$_{x}$ alloys have attracted significant attention as a route to achieve a direct-gap group-IV semiconductor. Using density functional theory (DFT) - employing local density approximation and hybrid Heyd-Scuzeria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functionals - we compute the lattice parameters, relaxed and inner elastic constants, and internal strain (Kleinman) parameters for elemental (diamond) group-IV materials and zinc blende IV-IV compounds. Our DFT calculations support a little-known experimental re-evaluation of the $α$-Sn elastic constants, and contradict a re…
We calculate the electronic structure of germanium-tin (Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$) binary alloys for $0 \leq x \leq 1$ using density functional theory (DFT). Relaxed alloys with semiconducting or semimetallic behaviour as a function of Sn composition $x$ are identified, and the impact of epitaxial strain is included by constraining supercell lattice constants perpendicular to the [001] growth direction to the lattice constants of Ge, zinc telluride (ZnTe), or cadmium telluride (CdTe) substrates. It is found that application of 1% tensile strain reduces the Sn composition required to bring the (positi…
We have used the locally self-consistent Green's function (LSGF) method in supercell calculations to establish the distribution of the net charges assigned to the atomic spheres of the alloy components in metallic alloys with different compositions and degrees of order. This allows us to determine the Madelung potential energy of a random alloy in the single-site mean field approximation which makes the conventional single-site density-functional- theory coherent potential approximation (SS-DFT-CPA) method practically identical to the supercell LSGF method with a single-site local interaction …
Divalent cations mixed lead halide perovskites with enhanced performances, high stabilities, and reduced toxicity are requisite to make persistent progress in perovskite solar cells. However, the mixing strategy is not reported extensively in search of a lead reduced structure. Herein, we report the structural, electronic and optical properties of RbPb{1-x}MxI3 (where, M={Sn,Ge} and x={0.25, 0.50, 0.75}) by alloying the B-site with Sn and Ge, using the density functional theory. The formation enthalpy is estimated for all RbPb{1-x}MxI3 (with x= 0.25, 0.50, 0.75), which confirms stability for a…

The puzzling absence of Pu magnetic moments in a PuAm environment is explored using the self-consistent Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) calculations in combination with the Local Density Approximation. We argue that delta-Pu -Am alloys provide an ideal test bed for investigating the screening of moments from the single impurity limit to the dense limit. Several important effects can be studied: volume expansion, shift of the bare Pu on-site f energy level, and the reduction of the hybridization cloud resulting from the collective character of the Kondo effect in the Anderson lattice. These …
Hydrogen permeability prediction in palladium alloys and virtual screening of B2-phase stabilized Pd(100-x-y)CuxMy ternary alloys using machine learning
In this work, we provide important insights into the evolution of half-metallicity in quaternary Heusler alloys. Employing {\it ab initio} electronic structure methods we study 18 quaternary Heusler compounds having the chemical formula CoX$^\prime$Y$^\prime$Al, where Y$^\prime$ = Mn, Fe; and X$^\prime$ a 4$d$ element. Along with the search for new materials for spintronics applications, the trends in structural, electronic, magnetic properties and Curie temperature were investigated. We have made comparative studies with the compounds in the quaternary series CoX$^{\prime}$Y$^{\prime}$Si with…

A quantitative description of the configurational part of the total energy of metallic alloys with substantial atomic size difference cannot be achieved in the atomic sphere approximation: It needs to be corrected at least for the multipole moment interactions in the Madelung part of the one-electron potential and energy. In the case of a random alloy such interactions can be accounted for only by lifting the atomic sphere and single-site approximations, in order to include the polarization due to local environment effects. Nevertheless a simple parameterization of the screened Coulomb interac…
Developing fast and accurate methods to discover intermetallic compounds is relevant for alloy design. While density-functional-theory (DFT)-based methods have accelerated design of binary and ternary alloys by providing rapid access to the energy and properties of the stable intermetallics, they are not amenable for rapidly screening the vast combinatorial space of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs). Here, a machine-learning model is presented for predicting the formation enthalpy of binary intermetallics and used to identify new ones. The model uses easily accessible elemental properties…
We perform a critical assessment of the accuracy of DFT-based methods in predicting stable phases within the Co-Pt binary alloy. Statistical mechanical analysis applied to zero kelvin DFT predictions yields finite-temperature results that can be directly compared with experimental measurements. The predicted temperature-composition phase diagram is qualitatively incompatible with experimental observations, indicating that the predicted stability of long-period superstructures as ground states in the Co-Pt binary is incorrect. We also show that recently suggested methods to better align DFT and…
The DFT/vdW-QHO-WF method, recently developed to include the van der Waals (vdW) interactions in approximated Density Functional Theory (DFT) by combining the Quantum Harmonic Oscillator model with the Maximally Localized Wannier Function technique, is applied to the cases of atoms and small molecules (X=Ar, CO, H$_2$, H$_2$O) weakly interacting with benzene and with the ideal planar graphene surface. Comparison is also presented with the results obtained by other DFT vdW-corrected schemes, including PBE+D, vdW-DF, vdW-DF2, rVV10, and by the simpler Local Density Approximation (LDA) and semilo…
Stacking fault energy (SFE) plays an important role in deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals and alloys. In metastable fcc alloys, the SFEs determined from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental methods often have opposite signs. Here, we show that the negative SFE by DFT reflects the thermodynamic instability of the fcc phase relative to the hexagonal close-packed one; while the experimentally determined SFEs are restricted to be positive by the models behind the indirect measurements. We argue that the common models underl…
We developed new modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) interatomic potentials for the Mg-Al alloy system using a first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT). The materials parameters, such as the cohesive energy, equilibrium atomic volume, and bulk modulus, were used to determine the MEAM parameters. Face-centered cubic, hexagonal close packed, and cubic rock salt structures were used as the reference structures for Al, Mg, and MgAl, respectively. The applicability of the new MEAM potentials to atomistic simulations for investigating Mg-Al alloys was demonstrated by perform…
