We calculate the electronic structure of germanium-tin (Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$) binary alloys for $0 \leq x \leq 1$ using density functional theory (DFT). Relaxed alloys with semiconducting or semimetallic behaviour as a function of Sn composition $x$ are identified, and the impact of epitaxial strain is included by constraining supercell lattice constants perpendicular to the [001] growth direction to the lattice constants of Ge, zinc telluride (ZnTe), or cadmium telluride (CdTe) substrates. It is found that application of 1% tensile strain reduces the Sn composition required to bring the (positive) direct band gap to zero by approximately 5% compared to a relaxed Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy having the same gap at $Γ$. On the other hand, compressive strain has comparatively less impact on the alloy band gap at $Γ$. Using DFT calculated alloy lattice and elastic constants, the critical thickness for Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ thin films as a function of $x$ and substrate lattice constant is estimated, and validated against supercell DFT calculations. The analysis correctly predicts the Sn composition range at which it becomes energetically favourable for Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$/Ge to become amorphous. The influence of stoichiometry and strain is examined in relation to reducing the magnitude of the inverted (``negative'') $Γ_{7}^{-}$-$Γ_{8}^{+}$ band gap, which is characteristic of semimetallic alloy electronic structure. Based on our findings, strategies for engineering the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition via strain and quantum confinement in Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ nanostructures are proposed.
We present a combined experimental-theoretical study demonstrating the role of site disorder, off-stoichiometry and strain on the optical behavior of magnetoelectric gallium ferrite. Optical properties such as band-gap, refractive indices and dielectric constants were experimentally obtained by performing ellipsometric studies over the energy range 0.8 eV to 4.2 eV on pulsed laser deposited epitaxial thin films of stoichiometric gallium ferrite with b-axis orientation and the data was compared with theoretical results. Calculations on the ground state structure show that the optical activity i…
In the present work, we demonstrate for the first time the outstanding dynamic mechanical properties of nano-quasicrystalline Al93Fe3Cr2Ti2 at.% alloy and composites. Unlike most crystalline aluminium-based alloys, this alloy and composites exhibit substantial strain rate sensitivity and retain much of their ductility at high rates of strain. This opens new pathways for use in safety-critical materials where impact resistance is required.
A Fe89.15Cr10.75 alloy in a heavily strained (by cold rolling) and strain-relaxed states was studied by means of the conversion electrons Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). Analysis of the spectra in terms of a two-shell model revealed significant differences between the studied samples, in particular, in values of the hyperfine field, a distribution of Cr atoms within the first two neighbor-shells, the latter was expressed in terms of the short-range order parameters, and in the magnetic texture.
A palladium-based (Pd-based) core@shell catalyst can be modified to achieve the desired oxygen adsorption properties by selecting an appropriate core composition, surface alloying, and compressive strain. Herein, we present the effects of compressive strain, core composition, and surface alloying in Pd3Ni@PdIr(111), Pd3CuNi@PdIr(111), and Pd3Cu@PdIr(111) alloy-core@alloy-shell catalysts on dioxygen adsorption. Using experimental lattice parameters for the unstrained catalysts, -1% to -5%, the strain was systematically introduced. The calculated dioxygen-adsorption energies for the surface Pd a…
We study the temperature dependence of strain under constant magnetic-fields in Ni-Mn based ferromagnetic Heusler alloys in the form Ni-Mn-$X$ ($X$: Ga, In, Sn, Sb) which undergo a martensitic transformation. We discuss the influence of the applied magnetic-field on the nucleation of ferromagnetic martensite and extract information on the easy-axis of magnetization in the martensitic state.
We investigate the strain-rate-dependent mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of a refractory high entropy alloy, Ti29Zr24Nb23Hf24 (at.%), with a single-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. High-temperature compression tests were conducted at temperatures from 700 to 1100°C at strain rates ranging from 10-3 to 10 s-1. A sudden stress drop after yield point was observed at higher temperatures and lower strain rates with the Zener-Holloman parameter, lnZ, in the range of 17.2-20.7. Such a softening behavior can be related to the interaction of dislocations with short-range cluste…
Applying the approximate DFT-1/2 quasiparticle scheme, band structure unfolding, and generalized quasichemical approximation to describe chemical and structural disorder, we investigate the electronic structure of Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ alloys from first principles. We calculate the important energy levels near the Fermi energy versus the Sb concentration $x$ where the trivial-topological (TT) and semimetal-semiconductor (SMSC) transitions occur. We demonstrate that the energy variation of the relevant states deviates significantly from linear behavior and that the bowings are important to correctly…
Recently, several research groups have reported on the observation of super-large more than 5% magneto-strain effect in some non-stoichiometric Ni-Mn-Ga alloys close to 5.78% value expected from the tetragonality aspect ratio of the martensite crystal lattice. New Ni-Mn-Ga alloys showing giant magneto-strain effect display simultaneously few interesting physical effects and new behavior for some magnetic and mechanical properties which is very different from that earlier observed in Ni-Mn-Ga showing lower magneto-strain effect. This report represents some new experimental results and the quant…
The bowing of the energy of the three lowest band-to-band transitions in $β$-(Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$)$_2$O$_3$ alloys was resolved using a combined density functional theory (DFT) and generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry (GSE) approach. The DFT calculations of the electronic band structure of both, $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ and $θ$-Al$_2$O$_3$, allow extracting of the linear portion of the energy shift in the alloys, and provide a method for quantifying the role of coherent strain present in the $β$-(Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$)$_2$O$_3$ thin films on (010) $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ substrates. The energies of band-to-band …
Some III-V digital alloy avalanche photodiodes exhibit low excess noise. These alloys have low hole ionization coefficients due to presence of small 'minigaps', enhanced effective mass and large separation between light-hole and split-off bands in the valence band. In this letter, an explanation for the formation of the minigaps using a tight binding picture is provided. Furthermore, we demonstrate that decreasing substrate lattice constant can increase the minigap size and mass in the transport direction. This leads to reduced quantum tunneling and phonon scattering of the holes. Finally, we …
In this work, we address issues pertinent to the understanding of the structural and electronic properties of Si_{1-x} Ge_{x}alloys, namely, (i) how does the lattice constant mismatch between bulk Si and bulk Ge manifests itself in the alloy system? and (ii) what are the relevant strain release mechanisms? To provide answers to these questions, we have carried out an in-depth study of the changes in the local geometric and electronic structures arising from the strain relaxation in Si_{1-x} Ge_{x} alloys using an ab initio molecular dynamics scheme. The optimized lattice constant, while exhibi…
Hydrogen incorporation in native surface oxides of metal alloys often controls the onset of metal hydriding, with implications for materials corrosion and hydrogen storage. A key representative example is titania, which forms as a passivating layer on a variety of titanium alloys for structural and functional applications. These oxides tend to be structurally diverse, featuring polymorphic phases, grain boundaries, and amorphous regions that generate a disparate set of unique local environments for hydrogen. Here, we introduce a workflow that can efficiently and accurately navigate this comple…
We discuss a model for the on-site matrix elements of the sp3d5s* tight-binding hamiltonian of a strained diamond or zinc-blende crystal or nanostructure. This model features on-site, off-diagonal couplings between the s, p and d orbitals, and is able to reproduce the effects of arbitrary strains on the band energies and effective masses in the full Brillouin zone. It introduces only a few additional parameters and is free from any ambiguities that might arise from the definition of the macroscopic strains as a function of the atomic positions. We apply this model to silicon, germanium and the…
The Portevin-Le Chatelier(PLC) effect has been investigated by deforming Al-2.5%Mg alloy in the strain rate regime where simultaneously two types (type B and type A) of serrations appear in the stress strain curve. Our analysis reveal that in this strain rate regime the entire PLC dynamics for a particular strain rate experiment is governed by a single band which changes its character during the deformation.
A polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of near-stoichiometric Ni2MnGa alloys have been investigated. It was confirmed that martensite short crystallographic axis (c-axis) is the easy axis of magnetization. The reversible reorientation of the easy magnetization direction of martensite samples after 5% compression is found. The same reversible reorientation of the easy magnetization direction under applied magnetic field occurs in the single-crystal samples. The field-induced reorientation of the easy magnetization direction is accompanied with more than 4% of sample's dimension change. Ab…
A new $β$-metastable Ti-alloy is designed with the aim to obtain a TWIP alloy but positioned at the limit between the TRIP/TWIP and the TWIP dominated regime. The designed alloy exhibits a large ductility combined with an elevated and stable work-hardening rate. Deformation occurring by formation and multiplication of {332}<113> twins is evidenced and followed by in-situ electron microscopy, and no primary stress induced martensite is observed. Since microstructural investigations of the deformation mechanisms show a highly heterogeneous deformation, the reason of the large ductility is then i…
The microstructure of the commercial alloy AA2195 was investigated on the nano-scale after conducting a T8 tempering. This particular thermo-mechanical treatment of the specimen resulted in the formation of platelet-shaped $T_{1}$ ($Al_{2}CuLi$)/ $θ^{'}$($Al_{2}Cu$) within the Al-matrix. The electrochemically prepared samples were analyzed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography for chemical mapping. The $θ^{'}$ platelets, which are less than 2 nm thick, have the stoichiometric composition consistent with the expected ($Al_{2}Cu$) equilibrium composition. Additio…
Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are materials with the ability to recover apparently permanent deformation under specific thermomechanical loading. The majority of constitutive models for SMAs are developed based on the infinitesimal strain theory. However, such assumption may not be proper in the presence of geometric discontinuities, such as cracks, and repeated cycling loading that has been reported to induce irrecoverable strains up to 20% due to transformation induced plasticity. In addition to finite strains, SMA-based devices may also undergo large rotations. Thus, it is indispensable to dev…
A traditional split-Hopkinson pressure bar system has been modified by the addition of ZK60A magnesium alloy pressure bars in order to increase the resolution of data when examining specimens of low-density, high-density and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. It was found that the low density of the ZK60A allowed a decent increase in transmitted pulse amplitude, whilst its relatively high yield strength afforded long-term reliability of the system. The accuracy of data obtained from the fitted strain gauges was verified with the use of a high-speed video camera, and was found to be an e…
Strain heterogeneity at the microstructural level plays a vital role in the deformation and fracture behaviour of dual or multi-phase materials. In the present work, the strain heterogeneity, localization and partitioning arising at the sub-micron scale during elevated temperature (170 °C) tensile deformation of an Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy was investigated using quasi in-situ μ-DIC experiments. The results reveal that the strain is mainly carried by the α-Mg phase, while the intermetallic Laves phase plays a critical role in that strain concentrations build up at the α-Mg matrix and Laves phase interf…
Many engineering applications of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) involve passing back and forth through phase transformation many times. Repeated phase transformation develops permanent deformations originating from the significant distortion that phase transformation induces at the austenite-martensite interfaces and grain boundaries. This distortion drives dislocation activity resulting in an observable macroscopic Transformation-Induced Plastic (TRIP) deformation, which occurs at effective stress levels much lower than the plastic yield limit of the material. TRIP strains may accumulate up to 20…
Cooperative growth of the structure units (SUs) in a 14H type long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure has been observed, and there is no obvious accumulation of transformation strain at the growth fronts. The atomic structures at this front are further characterized by Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and the partial dislocations associated SUs are uniquely defined based on the observations at different zone axes. It is found that the Burgers vectors of neighbouring partials are alternatively opposed so that the transformation strain is self-accommodated. Furthermo…
The all-d-metal Mn2-based Heusler ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Mn50Ni40-xCoxTi10 (x = 8 and 9.5) are realized. With a generic comparison between d-metal Ti and main-group elements in lowering the transformation temperature, the magnetostructural martensitic transformations are established by further introducing Co to produce local ferromagnetic Mn-Co-Mn configurations. A 5-fold modulation and (3, -2) stacking of [00 10] of martensite are determined by XRD and HRTEM analysis. Based on the transformation, a large magneto-strain of 6900 ppm and a large volume change of -2.54% are observed in…
The major obstacle in the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity is the difficulty in efficiently scattering phonons across the entire frequency spectrum. Using first principles calculations, we show that driving PbTe materials to the brink of the ferroelectric phase transition could be a powerful strategy to solve this problem. We illustrate this concept by applying tensile [001] strain to PbTe and its alloys with another rock-salt IV-VI material, PbSe; and by alloying PbTe with a rhombohedral IV-VI material, GeTe. This induces extremely soft optical modes at the zone cente…
We study experimentally the intermittent progress of the mechanically induced martensitic transformation in a Cu-Al-Be single crystal through a full-field measurement technique: the grid method. We utilize an in- house, specially designed gravity-based device, wherein a system controlled by water pumps applies a perfectly monotonic uniaxial load through very small force increments. The sample exhibits hysteretic superelastic behavior during the forward and reverse cubic-monoclinic transformation, produced by the evolution of the strain field of the phase microstructures. The in-plane linear st…
Ge with a quasi-direct band gap can be realized by strain engineering, alloying with Sn, or ultrahigh n-type doping. In this work, we use all three approaches together to fabricate direct-band-gap Ge-Sn alloys. The heavily doped n-type Ge-Sn is realized with CMOS-compatible nonequilibrium material processing. P is used to form highly doped n-type Ge-Sn layers and to modify the lattice parameter of P-doped Ge-Sn alloys. The strain engineering in heavily-P-doped Ge-Sn films is confirmed by x-ray diffraction and micro Raman spectroscopy. The change of the band gap in P-doped Ge-Sn alloy as a func…
The elastocaloric (eC) effects of natural rubber (NR) and shape memory alloys (SMAs) are compared and potential improvement for eC performances of SMAs is proposed. Both the plateau and hysteresis of stress-strain curve in NR and SMAs are observed. They are attributed to the similar phase transformation: strain-induced crystallization (SIC) in NR and martensitic transformation in SMAs. For NR, the drawback of large strain can be reduced by pre-strain. For SMAs, the stress change with strain is smaller in stress plateau regime. Thus, the drawback of large dynamic stress of SMAs is proposed to b…
Application of isotropic pressure or uniaxial strain alters the elastic properties of materials; sufficiently large strains can drive structural transformations. Linear elasticity describes stability against infinitesimal strains, while nonlinear elasticity describes the response to finite deformations. It was previously shown that uniaxial strain along [100] drives refractory metals and alloys towards mechanical instabilities. These include an extensional instability, and a symmetry-breaking orthorhombic distortion caused by a Jahn-Teller-Peierls instability that splays the cubic lattice vect…
The Semi-Empirical TB model developed in part I is applied to metal transport problems of current relevance in part II. A systematic study of the effect of quantum confinement, transport orientation and homogeneous strain on electronic transport properties of Cu is carried out. It is found that quantum confinement from bulk to nanowire boundary conditions leads to significant anisotropy in conductance of Cu along different transport orientations. Compressive homogeneous strain is found to reduce resistivity by increasing the density of conducting modes in Cu. The [110] transport orientation in…
This work presents a three-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloys considering the TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) as well as the Two-Way Shape Memory Effect (TWSME) through a large deformation framework. The presented logarithmic strain based model is able to capture the large strains and rotations exhibited by SMAs under general thermomechanical cycling. By using the martensitic volume fraction, transformation strain, internal stress, and TRIP strain tensors as internal state variables, the model is capable to capture the stress-dependent TRIP generation when SMAs are…
We use first principles calculations to study the influence of thermomechanical loads on the energetics of precipitation in magnesium-aluminum alloys. Using Density Functional Theory simulations, we present expressions of the energy of magnesium-aluminum binary solid solutions as a function of concentration, strain and temperature. Additionally, from these calculations, we observe an increase in equilibrium volume (and hence the equilibrium lattice constants) with the increase in concentration of magnesium. We also observe an increase in the cohesive energy of solutions with increase in concen…
We study the dependence of macroscopic polarization on composition and strain in wurtzite III-V nitride ternary alloys using ab initio density-functional techniques. The spontaneous polarization is characterized by a large bowing, strongly dependent on the alloy microscopic structure. The bowing is due to the different response of the bulk binaries to hydrostatic pressure, and to internal strain effects (bond alternation). Disorder effects are instead minor. Deviations from parabolicity (simple bowing) are of order 10 % in the most extreme case of AlInN alloy, much less at all other compositio…
In this paper, two fatigue lifetime prediction models are tested on TiAl intermetallic using results from uniaxial low-cycle fatigue tests. Both assessments are based on dissipated energy but one of them considers a hydrostatic pressure correction. This work allows to confirm, on this kind of material, the linear nature, already noticed on silicon molybdenum cast iron, TiNi shape memory alloy and 304L stainless steel, of dissipated energy, corrected or not with hydrostatic pressure, according to the number of cycles to failure. This study also highlights that, firstly, the dissipated energy mo…

Enhancement of the electronic thermoelectric properties of bulk strained silicon-germanium alloys using the scattering relaxation times from first principles
Through the combination of transmission electron microscopy analysis of the deformed microstructure and molecular dynamics computer simulations of the deformation processes, the mechanisms of plastic strain recovery in bulk AgCu eutectic with either incoherent twin or cube-on-cube interfaces between the Ag and Cu layers and a bilayer thickness of 500 nm have been revealed. The character of the incoherent twin interfaces changed uniquely after dynamic compressive loading for samples that exhibited plastic strain recovery and was found to drive the recovery, which is due to dislocation retractio…
Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) has been widely aware of working as actuators for active/smart morphing structures in the engineering industry. Because of the high actuation energy density of SMAs, compared to other active materials, structures integrated with SMA-based actuators has high advantage in terms of trade-offs between overall structure weight, integrity and functionality. The majority of available constitutive models for SMAs are developed within the infinitesimal strain regime. However, it was reported that particular SMAs can generate transformation strains nearly up to 8%-10%, for whi…
Theoretical predictions of the ideal strength of materials range from E/30 to E/10 (E is Young's modulus). However, despite intense interest over the last decade, the value of the ideal strength that can be attained experimentally for metals remains a mystery (1-5). In this study, we demonstrated the unprecedented strength of an amorphous Cu-Zr alloy that surpassed the E/10 limit. Laser-induced shock experiments were conducted on Cu50Zr50 to explore its strength and failure mechanisms at ultrahigh strain rates. The material demonstrated a high spall strength of 9.8 GPa, approximately 1/13 of i…
A catalyst surface may be exposed to strain due to application of load or interfacing with a substrate with large lattice mismatch. In order to test the effect of strain on catalytic efficiency, we use Density Functional Theory +U (DFT+U) to model water oxidation on expanded and contracted surfaces of the Ni1-xFexOOH alloy, one of the best known catalysts for water splitting. We find that a low amount of iron content has a similar effect as of applying compressive strain. Due to high oxidation state of Fe4+ at the active site, the Fe-O bond is shorter than in pure FeOOH, which is beneficial fo…
The electronic energy band structure of strained and unstrained Si, Ge and SiGe alloys is examined in this work using thirty-level k.p analysis. The energy bands are at first obtained with ab initio calculations based on the Local-Density-Approximation of Density-Functional Theory, including a GW correction and relativistic effects. The so-calculated band structure is then used to extract the unknown k.p fitting parameters with a conjugate-gradient optimization procedure. In a similar manner, the results of ab initio calculations for strained materials are used to fit the unknown deformation p…
Raman light scattering, low-temperature photoluminescence, light-scattering tomography, and hydrogenation were used to investigate optical properties of defects in strain-relaxed Si_{1-x}Ge_x (0.05 \le x \le 0.50) alloys. The photoluminescence emission was characterized by typical zero-phonon, phonon-assisted, and dislocations-related emissions, which are dependent on Ge composition x. However, luminescence spectra exhibited above band-gap features, which are likely associated with the presence of Si-rich regions in the alloys. The results are correlated with light-scattering tomography, revea…
A microstructure-based model is presented to predict the fatigue life of polycrystalline metallic alloys which present a bilinear Coffin-Manson relationship. The model is based in the determination of the maximum value of a fatigue indicator parameter obtained from the plastic energy dissipated by cycle in the microstructure. The fatigue indicator parameter was obtained by means of the computational homogenization of a representative volume element of the microstructure using a crystal-plasticity finite element model. The microstructure-based model was applied to predict the low cyclic fatigue…
A Ginzburg-Landau model for the macroscopic behaviour of a shape memory alloy is proposed. The model is one-dimensional in essence, in that we consider the effect of the martensitic phase transition in terms of a uniaxial deformation along a fixed direction and we use a scalar order parameter whose equilibrium values describe the austenitic phase and the two martensitic variants. The model relies on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy defined as a function of macroscopically measurable quantities, and accounts for thermal effects; couplings between the various relevant physical aspects are establish…
The natural and true band profiles at heterojunctions formed by hexagonal Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$ alloys are investigated by a variety of methods: density functional theory for atomic geometries, approximate quasiparticle treatments for electronic structures, different band edge alignment procedures, and construction of various hexagonal unit cells to model alloys and heterojunctions. We demonstrate that the natural band offsets are rather unaffected by the choice to align the vacuum level or the branch point energy, as well as by the use of a hybrid or the Tran-Blaha functional. At interfaces betwee…
Strain-controlled fatigue of Mg-1Mn-0.5Nd (wt.\%) alloy were studied by experiment and simulation. The microstructure was made up of a dispersion of strongly texture grains (13\%) embedded in a matrix of grains with a random texture. The cyclic stress-strain curves showed limited tension-compression anisotropy because of the limited texture. Cyclic hardening under compression and cyclic softening under tension occurred due to the presence of twinning. Moreover, the twin volume fraction of the broken samples depended on whether the sample was broken in tension or compression, indicating that tw…
We extend the previous 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model effectively employed for relaxed Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy to the case of strained Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy. The strain-relevant parameters for the 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model are obtained by using linear interpolation between the values of single crystal of Ge and Sn that are from literatures and optimizations. We specially investigate the dependence of band-gap at $L$-valley and $Γ$-valley with different Sn composition under uniaxial and biaxial strain along [100], [110] and [111] directions. The good agreement between our theoretical predict…
