Using a sample of 38 radio-loud galaxy mergers at z<=0.2, we confirm the high detection rate (~84%) of HI 21-cm absorption in mergers, which is significantly higher (~4 times) than in non-mergers. The distributions of the HI column density [N(HI)] and velocity shift of the absorption with respect to the systemic redshift of the galaxy hosting the radio source in mergers are significantly different from that in non-mergers. We investigate the connection of the nuclear HI gas with various multi-wavelength properties of the mergers. While the inferred N(HI) and gas kinematics do not show strong (i.e. >=3-sigma level) correlation with galaxy properties, we find that the incidence and N(HI) of absorption tend to be slightly higher at smaller projected separations between the galaxy pairs and among the lower stellar mass-radio galaxies. The incidence, N(HI) and line width of HI absorption increase from the pre-merger to the post-merger stages. The 100% detection rate in post-mergers indicates that the neutral gas in the circumnuclear regions survives the coalescence period and is not yet quenched by the nuclear radio activity.
We discuss how the centres of galaxy clusters evolve in time, showing the results of a series of direct N-body simulations. In particular, we followed the evolution of a galaxy cluster with a mass $M_{clus} \simeq 10^{14} $M$_{\odot}$ in different configurations. The dynamical evolution of the system leads in all the cases to the formation of dense and massive sub-structures in the cluster centre, that form in consequence of a series of collisions and merging among galaxies travelling in the cluster core. We investigate how the structural properties of the main merging product depends on the c…
We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and Very Large Array observations of HI 21-cm absorption in ten z<=0.2 galaxy mergers that host strong radio sources. Seven of these mergers show strong absorption [with N(HI) ~10^{21-22} cm^{-2}, for spin temperature of 100 K and unit covering factor], leading to a total detection rate of 83 +/- 17% in low-z radio-loud galaxy mergers. This is ~3-4 times higher than that found for intrinsic HI 21-cm absorption in low-z radio sources in general. The fraction of intrinsic absorbers that are associated with mergers increases with increasing N(HI) thresho…
We report the discovery of the merging cluster, RXCJ2359.3-6042, from the REFLEX II cluster survey and present our results from all three detectors combined in the imaging and spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton data. Also known as Abell 4067, this is a unique system, where a compact bullet penetrates an extended, low density cluster at redshift z=0.099 clearly seen from our follow-up XMM-Newton observation. The bullet goes right through the central region of the cluster without being disrupted and we can clearly watch the process how the bullet component is stripped of its layers outside the …
We performed a series of direct N-body simulations with the aim to follow the dynamical evolution of a galaxy cluster (GC) ($M_{clus}\simeq 10^{14} M_{\odot}$) in different environment. The results show the formation of heavy sub-structures in the cluster centre in consequence of multiple merging among the innermost galaxies. Moreover we investigate the dynamics of super-massive black holes (SMBHs) residing in the centre of galaxies that form the most massive sub-structure.
Galaxy groups and clusters are the main tools used to test cosmological models and to study the environmental effect of galaxy formation. This work provides a catalogue of galaxy groups and clusters, as well as potentially merging systems based on the SDSS main galaxy survey. We identified galaxy groups and clusters using the modified friends-of-friends (FoF) group finder designed specifically for flux-limited galaxy surveys. The FoF group membership is refined by multimodality analysis to find subgroups and by using the group virial radius and escape velocity to expose unbound galaxies. We lo…
We present a comprehensive multi-wavelength analysis of the merging galaxy cluster MACS~J0417.5-1154 at a redshift of $z=0.44$, using available images red obtained with \chandra\ in X-ray, {\it Subaru}, {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) in optical, {\it Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope} (GMRT) in radio and {\it Bolocam} at 2.1~mm wavelength. This is an example of a complex merging galaxy cluster also hosting a steep-spectrum Mpc scale radio halo. The mass distribution obtained by weak lensing reconstruction shows that MACS~J0417.5-1154 belongs to the dissociative class of mergers, where one of…
We present a study of 58 double-peaked emission line galaxies for which one of the components is suppressed in [OIII]5008 or significantly weaker than the other one. Accordingly, the two components are classified differently in the BPT diagram. We show that the strong [OIII] component coincides with the stellar velocity and the suppressed component is off-centred in 66% of the galaxies, while in 12% of them it is the opposite. The analysis of their morphology reveals that about half of the sample is composed of S0, the rest is composed in equal part of mergers and late-type galaxies. We discus…
We present the first results from the largest H$α$ survey of star formation and AGN activity in galaxy clusters. Using 9 different narrow band filters, we select $>3000$ H$α$ emitters within $19$ clusters and their larger scale environment over a total volume of $1.3\times10^5$ Mpc$^3$. The sample includes both relaxed and merging clusters, covering the $0.15-0.31$ redshift range and spanning from $5\times10^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$ to $30\times10^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$. We find that the H$α$ luminosity function (LF) for merging clusters has a higher characteristic density $ϕ^*$ compared to relaxed cluste…
In major galaxy mergers, the orbits of stars are violently perturbed, and gas is torqued to the centre, diluting the gas metallicity and igniting a starburst. In this paper, we study the gas dynamics in and around merging galaxies using a series of cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) zoom-in simulations. We find that the gas bridge connecting the merging galaxies pre-coalescence is dominated by turbulent pressure, with turbulent Mach numbers peaking at values of 1.6-3.3. This implies that bridges are dominated by supersonic turbulence, and are thus ideal candidates for studying the impac…
We present new low-frequency ($ν= 88$-216 MHz) observations of the complex merging galaxy cluster Abell 3266. These new observations are taken with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in its Phase II 'extended', long-baseline configuration, offering the highest-resolution low-frequency view of the cluster to date. We report on the detection of four steep spectrum ($α\lesssim -1$ for $S_ν\propto ν^α$) extended radio sources within the cluster. We confirm the detection of a $\sim 570$ kpc radio relic to the south of the cluster, and a possible bridge of emission connecting the relic to the clust…
The rotation curves of some star forming massive galaxies at redshift two decline over the radial range of a few times the effective radius, indicating a significant deficit of dark matter (DM) mass in the galaxy centre. The DM mass deficit is interpreted as the existence of a DM density core rather than the cuspy structure predicted by the standard cosmological model. A recent study proposed that a galaxy merger, in which the smaller satellite galaxy is significantly compacted by dissipative contraction of the galactic gas, can heat the centre of the host galaxy and help make a large DM core.…
By analysing the Chandra and XMM-Newton archived data of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 3158, which was reported to possess a relatively regular, relaxed morphology in the X-ray band in previous works, we identify a bow edge-shaped discontinuity in the X-ray surface brightness distribution at about $120h_{71}^{-1}$ kpc west of the X-ray peak. This feature is found to be associated with a massive, off-centre cool gas clump, and actually forms the west boundary of the cool clump. We find that the cool gas clump is moving at a subsonic velocity of ~700 km/s toward west on the sky plane. We exclu…
Recent observational studies of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have discovered massive black holes (MBHs) with masses of more than ${10^6~\rm M_\odot}$, in their central regions. We here consider that these MBHs can be formed through merging of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH), with masses of ${[10^3-10^5]~{\rm M}_{\odot}}$, within the stellar nuclei of dwarf galaxies, which are progenitors of UCDs. We numerically investigate this formation process for a wide range of model parameters using N-body simulations. This means that IMBH growth and feedback is neglected in this study. We fin…
We present the study of the internal dynamics of the intriguing galaxy cluster Abell 1703, a system hosting a probable giant radio halo whose dynamical status is still controversial. Our analysis is based on unpublished spectroscopic data acquired at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and data publicly available in the literature. We also use photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We select 147 cluster members and compute the cluster redshift $\left<z\right>\sim 0.277$ and the global line-of-sight velocity dispersion $σ_{\rm v}\sim 1300$ km/s. We infer that Abell 1703 is a m…
The current cosmological structure formation models predict that galaxies evolve through frequent mergers. During these events, the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) residing in the centres of the galaxies shrink to the central region, while losing energy via dynamical friction. Detection of SMBHs in these galaxy mergers is straightforward if they are actively accreting matter from their surroundings as active galactic nuclei (AGN). Currently, only a few dual AGN are known. One way to identify dual AGN candidates is by detecting double-peaked emission lines in their spectra. If these are broad …
The mergers of galaxy clusters are the most energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. With the increased availability of multi-object spectroscopy and X-ray data an ever increasing fraction of local clusters are recognised as exhibiting signs of recent or past merging events on various scales. Our goal is to probe how these mergers affect the evolution and content of their member galaxies. We specifically aim to answer the following questions: Is the quenching of star formation in merging clusters enhanced when compared with relaxed clusters? Is the quenching preceded by a (short li…
We present LOFAR data from 110--180~MHz of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 1682, alongside archival optical, radio and X-ray data. Our 6 arc-second resolution images at low frequencies reveal new structures associated with numerous radio galaxies in the cluster. At 20 arc-second resolution we see diffuse emission throughout the cluster over hundreds of kpc, indicating particle acceleration mechanisms are in play as a result of the cluster merger event and powerful active galactic nuclei. We show that a significant part of the cluster emission is from an old radio galaxy with very steep spectr…
We investigate the star formation rate and its location in the major merger cluster Abell 2465 at $z$ = 0.245. Optical properties of the cluster are described in Paper I. Measurements of the H$α$ and infrared dust emission of galaxies in the cluster were made with an interference filter centred on the redshifted line at a wavelength of 817 nm and utilized data from the WISE satellite 12 $μ$m band. Imaging in the Johnson $U$ and $B$ bands was obtained, and along with SDSS $u$ and $r$ was used to study the blue fraction, which appears enhanced, as a further signatures of star formation in the cl…
We perform a set of non-radiative hydrodynamical simulations of merging spherical halos in order to understand the angular momentum (AM) properties of the galactic halos seen in cosmological simulations. The universal shape of AM distributions seen in simulations is found to be generically produced as a result of mergers. The universal shape is such that it has an excess of low AM material and hence cannot explain the exponential structure of disk galaxies. A resolution to this is suggested by the spatial distribution of low AM material which is found to be in the centre and a conical region c…
Small kinematically-decoupled stellar discs with scalelengths of a few tens of parsec are known to reside in the centre of galaxies. Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain how they form, including gas dissipation and merging of globular clusters. Using archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging and ground-based integral-field spectroscopy, we investigated the structure and stellar populations of the nuclear stellar disc hosted in the interacting SB0 galaxy NGC 1023. The stars of the nuclear disc are remarkably younger and more metal rich with respect to the host bulge. These findings …
In hierarchical structure formation scenarios, merging galaxies are expected to be seen in different phases of their coalescence. Simulations suggest that simultaneous activity of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the centres of the merging galaxies may be expected at kpc-scale separations. Currently, there are no direct observational methods which allow the selection of a large number of such dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates. SDSS J142507.32+323137.4 was reported as a promising candidate source based on its optical spectrum. Here we report on our sensitive e-MERLIN observati…
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) show exceptional properties over the whole electromagnetic spectrum. Their special location at the centres of galaxy clusters raises the question of the role of the environment on their radio properties. To decouple the effect of the galaxy mass and of the environment in their statistical radio properties, we investigate the possible dependence of the occurrence of radio loudness and of the fractional radio luminosity function on the dynamical state of the hosting cluster. We studied the radio properties of the BCGs in the Extended GMRT Radio Halo Survey (EGRH…

The coalescence of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) should generate the strongest sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Universe. However, the dynamics of their coalescence is the subject of much debate. In this study, we use a suite of $N$-body simulations to follow the merger of two nuclear star clusters (NSCs), each hosting a SMBH in their centre. We find that the presence of distinct star clusters around each SMBH has important consequences for the dynamical evolution of the SMBH binary: (i) The separation between the SMBHs decreases by a few orders of magnitude in the first few Myrs…
We present HI 21cm and optical observations of UGC 3672 which is located near the centre of the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. We find that UGC 3672 consists of an approximately linearly aligned triplet of gas rich dwarfs with large scale velocity continuity along the triplet axis. The faintest component of the triplet is extremely gas-rich (MHI/LB ~ 17) and also extremely metal deficient (12+log(O/H) ~ 7.0). The metallicity of this dwarf is close to the 'floor' observed in star forming galaxies. Low resolution HI images show that the galaxy triplet is located inside a common HI envelope, with fairl…
We have developed a computationally competitive N-body model of a previrialized aggregation of galaxies in a flat LambdaCDM universe to assess the role of the multiple mergers that take place during the formation stage of such systems in the configuration of the remnants assembled at their centres. An analysis of a suite of 48 simulations of low-mass forming groups (of about 1E13 solar masses) demonstrates that the gravitational dynamics involved in their hierarchical collapse is capable of creating realistic first-ranked galaxies without the aid of dissipative processes. Our simulations indic…
Cluster mergers may play a fundamental role in the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies. Stroe et al. (2014) revealed unexpected over-densities of candidate H$α$ emitters near the ~1 Mpc-wide shock fronts of the massive (~2x10$^{15}$M$_{\odot}$) "Sausage" merging cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301. We used Keck/DEIMOS and WHT/AF2 to confirm 83 H$α$ emitters in and around the merging cluster. We find that cluster star-forming galaxies in the hottest X-ray gas and/or in the cluster sub-cores (away from the shock fronts) show high [SII]6716/[SII]6761 and high [SII]6716/H$α$, implying very low elec…
A gap in phase-space, the loss cone (LC), is opened up by a supermassive black hole (MBH) as it disrupts or accretes stars in a galactic centre. If a star enters the LC then, depending on its properties, its interaction with the MBH will either generate a luminous electromagnetic flare or give rise to gravitational radiation, both of which are expected to have directly observable consequences. A thorough understanding of loss-cone refilling mechanisms is important for the prediction of astrophysical quantities, such as rates of tidal disrupting main-sequence stars, rates of capturing compact s…
We study gas inflows onto supermassive black holes using hydrodynamics simulations of isolated galaxies and idealized galaxy mergers with an explicit, multiphase interstellar medium (ISM). Our simulations use the recently developed ISM and stellar evolution model called Stars and MUltiphase Gas in GaLaxiEs (SMUGGLE). We implement a novel super-Lagrangian refinement scheme that increases the gas mass resolution in the immediate neighborhood of the black holes (BHs) to accurately resolve gas accretion. We do not include black hole feedback in our simulations. We find that the complex and turbule…
We model the inspiral of globular clusters (GCs) towards a galactic nucleus harboring a supermassive black hole (SMBH), a leading scenario for the formation of nuclear star clusters. We consider the case of GCs containing either an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) or a population of stellar mass black holes (BHs), and study the formation of gravitational wave (GW) sources. We perform direct summation $N$-body simulations of the infall of GCs with different orbital eccentricities in the live background of a galaxy with either a shallow or steep density profile. We find that the GC acts as an…
Galaxy mergers play a crucial role in the formation of massive galaxies and the buildup of their bulges. An important aspect of the merging process is the in-spiral of the supermassive black-holes (SMBHs) to the centre of the merger remnant and the eventual formation of a SMBH binary. If both the SMBHs are accreting they will form a dual or binary active galactic nucleus (DAGN). The final merger remnant is usually very bright and shows enhanced star formation. In this paper we summarize the current sample of DAGN from previous studies and describe methods that can be used to identify strong DA…
Nuclear Star Clusters (NSCs) are commonly observed in the centres of most galactic nuclei, including our own Milky Way. While their study can reveal important information about the build-up of the innermost regions of galaxies, the physical processes that regulate their formation are still poorly understood. NSCs might have been formed through gas infall and subsequent in situ star formation, and/or through the infall and merging of multiple star clusters into the centre of the galaxy. Here, we investigate the viability of the latter, by studying direct N-body simulations of inspiralling clust…

Given their prominent role in galaxy evolution, it is of paramount importance to unveil galaxy interactions and merger events and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. The use of high-resolution data makes it easier to identify merging systems, but it can still be challenging when the morphology does not show any clear galaxy-pair or gas bridge. Characterising the origin of puzzling kinematic features can help to reveal complicated systems. Here, we present a merging galaxy, MaNGA 1-114955, in which we highlighted the superimposition of two distinct rotating discs along the line of sight. …
Future observations with next generation radio telescopes will help us to understand the presence and the evolution of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters through the determination of the so-called Rotation Measure (RM). In this work, we applied the RM-synthesis technique on synthetic SKA1-MID radio images of a pair of merging galaxy clusters, measured between 950 and 1750 MHz with a resolution of 10 arcsec and a thermal noise of 0.1$μ$Jy/beam. The results of our RM-synthesis analysis are compared to the simulations' input parameters. We study two cases: one with radio haloes at the cluster cen…
Observational evidence indicates that the role of gas is secondary to that of gravity in the formation of the most luminous spheroids inhabiting the centres of galaxy associations, as originally conjectured in the late 80's/early 90's. However, attempts to explain the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) -- a tilted version of the scaling relation connecting the size, velocity dispersion and mass of virialized homologous systems -- based on sequences of pairwise mergers, have systematically concluded that dissipation cannot be ignored. We use controlled si…

Nuclear Clusters (NCs) are common stellar systems in the centres of galaxies. Yet, the physical mechanisms involved in their formation are still debated. Using a parsec-resolution hydrodynamical simulation of a dwarf galaxy, we propose an updated formation scenario for NCs. In this 'wet migration scenario', a massive star cluster forms in the gas-rich disc, keeping a gas reservoir, and growing further while it migrates to the centre via a combination of interactions with other substructures and dynamical friction. A wet merger with another dense cluster and its own gas reservoir can occur, alt…
The evolution of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) initially embedded in the centres of merging galaxies realised with a stellar mass function (SMF) is studied from the onset of galaxy mergers till coalescence. We performed a large set of direct N-body simulations with three different slopes of the central stellar cusp and different random seeds. Post Newtonian terms up to order 3.5 are used to drive the SMBH binary evolution in the relativistic regime. The impact of a SMF on the hardening rate and the coalescence time is investigated. We find that SMBH binaries coalesce well within one billion…
We present the study of the dynamical status of the galaxy cluster CL1821+643, a rare and intriguing cool-core cluster hosting a giant radio halo. We base our analysis on new spectroscopic data for 129 galaxies acquired at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We also use spectroscopic data available from the literature and photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We select 120 cluster member galaxies and compute the cluster redshift <z> ~ 0.296 and the global line-of-sight velocity dispersion $σ_{\rm V}$ ~ 1100 km/s. The results of our analysis are consistent with CL1821+643 be…
Recently, observational data and high precision mapping of the local velocity field of Local Group and Virgo cluster have revealed a linear velocity-distance relation of the outermost galaxies, properly referred to as Local Hubble Flow. By means of direct N-body method, we performed several simulations in which a galaxy cluster undergoes the action of the Dark Energy force and of the gravitational one induced by the gas. We reproduced the so-called Hubble diagrams, to highlight the outflow of the galaxies lying in the external region of the cluster. Our preliminary results suggest that the obs…
We present MeerKAT 1000 MHz and 1400 MHz observations of a bright radio galaxy in the southern hemisphere, ESO~137-006. The galaxy lies at the centre of the massive and merging Norma galaxy cluster. The MeerKAT continuum images (rms ~0.02 mJy/beam at ~10" resolution) reveal new features that have never been seen in a radio galaxy before: collimated synchrotron threads of yet unknown origin, which link the extended and bent radio lobes of ESO~137-006. The most prominent of these threads stretches in projection for about 80 kpc and is about 1 kpc in width. The radio spectrum of the threads is st…
We report on CO (J = 2 - 1) mapping with the IRAM 30-m HERA receiver array of CGCG 97-079, an irregular galaxy in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 1367 (z = 0.022). We find that $\sim$ 80% of the detected CO (J = 2 - 1) is projected within a 16 arcsec$^{2}$ (6.5 kpc$^{2}$) region to the north and west of the optical/NIR centre, with the intensity maximum offset $\sim 10$ arcsec (4 kpc) NW of the optical/NIR centre and $\sim$ 7 arcsec (3 kpc) south-east of the HI intensity maximum. Evolutionary synthesis models indicate CGCG 97-079 experienced a burst of star formation $\sim$ 10$^8$ yr ago, mos…
We have observed a sample of typical z=1 star forming galaxies, selected from the HiZELS survey, with the new KMOS near-infrared, multi-IFU instrument on the VLT, in order to obtain their dynamics and metallicity gradients. The majority of our galaxies have a metallicity gradient consistent with being flat or negative (i.e. higher metallicity cores than outskirts). Intriguingly, we find a trend between metallicity gradient and specific star formation rate (sSFR), such that galaxies with a high sSFR tend to have relatively metal-poor centres, a result which is strengthened when combined with da…
Fuzzy dark matter (FDM) consisting of ultra-light axions has been invoked to alleviate galactic-scale problems in the cold dark matter scenario. FDM fluctuations, created via the superposition of waves, can impact the motion of a central supermassive black hole (SMBH) immersed in an FDM halo. The SMBH will undergo a random walk, induced by FDM fluctuations, that can result in its ejection from the central region. This effect is strongest in dwarf galaxies, accounting for wandering SMBHs and the low detection rate of AGN in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. In addition, a lower bound on the allowed ax…
The Disk of Satellites (DoS) observed in the Andromeda galaxy is a thin and extended group of satellites, nearly perpendicular to the disk plane, that share a common direction of rotation about the centre of Andromeda. Although a DoS is also observed in the Milky Way galaxy, the prevalance of such structures in more distant galaxies remains controversial. Explanations for the formation of such DoSs vary widely from filamentary infall, or flattening due to the potential field from large scale structure, to galaxy interactions in a Mondian paradigm. Here we present an alternative scenario -- dur…
The Torpedo cluster, SPT-CL J0245-5302 (S0295) is a massive, merging cluster at a redshift of z = 0.300, which exhibits a strikingly similar morphology to the Bullet cluster 1E 0657-55.8 (z = 0.296), including a classic bow shock in the cluster's intra-cluster medium revealed by Chandra X-ray observations. We present Australia Telescope Compact Array data centred at 2.1 GHz and Murchison Widefield Array data at frequencies between 72 MHz and 231 MHz which we use to study the properties of the cluster. We characterise a number of discrete and diffuse radio sources in the cluster, including the …
Nucleation is a common phenomenon in all types of galaxies and at least 70% of them host nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in their centres. Many of the NSCs co-habit with super-massive black holes and follow similar scaling relations with host galaxy properties. NSCs, unlike black holes, preserve the signature of their evolutionary path imprinted onto their kinematics and stellar populations. Thus their study provides us with important information about the formation of galactic nuclei. In this paper we explored the angular momentum of the nuclei of six intermediate mass (9.7 > log(Mdyn/M_sun) > 1…
A massive black hole exists in almost every galaxy. They occasionally radiate a vast amount of light by releasing gravitational energy of accreting gas, with a cumulative active period of only a few $10^8$ years, so-called the duty cycle of the Active Galactic Nuclei. Namely, many galaxies today host a starving massive black hole. Although galaxy collisions have been thought to enhance nucleus activity, the origin of the duty cycle, especially the shutdown process, is a still critical issue. Here we show that galaxy collisions are also capable of suppressing black hole fueling by using an anal…
Mass outflow generated by the dynamical feedback from massive stars is currently a topic of high interest. Using a purpose-developed analysis technique, and taking full advantage of the high kinematic and angular resolution of our instrument we have detected a number of expanding superbubbles in the interacting pair of galaxies Arp 244 (NGC 4038/9) commonly known as the Antennae. We use a Fabry-Pérot interferometer GHαFaS to measure the profile of Hα in emission over the full extent of the object, except for the extended HI tails. The superbubbles are found centred on most of the brightest HII…
Direct observational evidence for the creation of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) is needed to support the proposed scenarios for their formation. We analysed the dwarf galaxy UGC 7346, located in the peripheral regions of the Virgo Cluster, to highlight a series of properties that indicate the formation of a NSC caught in its earlier stages. First, we report on remnants of a past interaction in the form of diffuse streams or shells, suggesting a recent merging of two dwarf galaxies with a 1:5 stellar mass ratio. Second, we identify a number of globular cluster (GC) candidates that are broadly co…
We present multiline CO observations of the complex submillimeter galaxy SMM J00266+1708. Using the Zpectrometer on the Green Bank Telescope, we provide the first precise spectroscopic measurement of its redshift (z=2.742). Based on followup CO(1-0), CO(3-2), and CO(5-4) mapping, SMM J00266+1708 appears to have two distinct components separated by ~500 km/s that are nearly coincident along our line of sight. The two components show hints of different kinematics, with the blue-shifted component dispersion-dominated and the red-shifted component showing a clear velocity gradient. CO line ratios …
We explore how observations relate to the physical properties of the emitting galaxies by post-processing a pair of merging $z\sim2$ galaxies from the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation NewHorizon using LCARS (Light from Cloudy Added to RAMSES) to encode the physical properties of the simulated galaxy into H$α$ emission line. By carrying out mock observations and analysis on these data cubes we ascertain which physical properties of the galaxy will be recoverable with the HARMONI spectrograph on the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We are able to estimate the galaxy's star format…
