Turing patterns in self-focussing nonlinear optical cavities pumped by beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) $m$ are shown to rotate with an angular velocity $ω= 2m/R^2$ on rings of radii $R$. We verify this prediction in 1D models on a ring and for 2D Laguerre-Gaussian and top-hat pumps with OAM. Full control over the angular velocity of the pattern in the range $- 2m/R^2 \le ω\le 2m/R^2$ is obtained by using cylindrical vector beam pumps that consist of orthogonally polarized eigenmodes with equal and opposite OAM. Using Poincaré beams that consist of orthogonally polarized eigenmodes with different magnitudes of OAM, the resultant angular velocity is $ω= (m_L + m_R)/R^2$, where $m_L, m_R$ are the OAMs of the eigenmodes, assuming good overlap between the eigenmodes. If there is no, or very little, overlap between the modes then concentric Turing pattern rings, each with angular velocity $ω= 2m_{L,R}/R^2$ will result. This can lead to, for example, concentric, counter-rotating Turing patterns creating an 'optical peppermill'-type structure. Full control over the speeds of multiple rings has potential applications in particle manipulation and stretching, atom trapping, and circular transport of cold atoms and BEC wavepackets.
We analyze the stability and dynamics of dissipative Kerr solitons in the presence of a parabolic potential. This potential stabilizes oscillatory and chaotic regimes, favoring the generation of static DKSs. Furthermore, the potential induces the emergence of new dissipative structures, such as asymmetric breathers and chimera-like states. Based on a mode decomposition of these states, we unveil the underlying modal interactions.
The design of an experiment on the spontaneous crystallization of a laser-cooled, but thermal atomic cloud into a hexagonally structured phase is discussed. Atomic interaction is mediated by the dipole potential of an optical lattice formed spontaneously in a multi-mode degenerate cavity from single-mode longitudinal pumping. The length scale of the structure is given by the diffractive dephasing between the spontaneous sidebands and the on-axis pump. A linear stability indicates that the transition can be observed in a cavity of moderate finesse compatible with having the cavity mirrors outsi…
A driven resonator with focusing Kerr nonlinearity shows stable localized structures in a region far from modulational instability. The stabilization mechanism is based on front interaction in bistable regime with an inhomogeneous injected field. The experimental setup consist of a focusing Kerr resonator filled with a liquid crystal and operates in negative optical diffraction regime. Engineering diffraction is an appealing challenging topic in relation with left-handed materials. We solve the visible range of current left-handed materials to show that localized structures in a focusing Kerr …
We report the existence of stable dissipative light bullets in Kerr cavities. These three-dimensional (3D) localized structures consist of either an isolated light bullet (LB), or could occur in clusters forming well-defined 3D patterns. They can be seen as stationary states in the reference frame moving with the group velocity of light within the cavity. The number of LBs and their distribution in 3D settings are determined by the initial conditions while their maximum peak power remains constant for a fixed value of the system parameters. Their bifurcation diagram allows us to explain this p…
Localized coherent structures can form in externally-driven dispersive optical cavities with a Kerr-type nonlinearity. Such systems are described by the Lugiato-Lefever equation, which supports a large variety of dynamical solutions. Here, we review our current knowledge on the formation, stability and bifurcation structure of localized structures in the one-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever equation. We do so by focusing on two main regimes of operation: anomalous and normal second-order dispersion. In the anomalous regime, localized patterns are organized in a homoclinic snaking scenario, which is…
Solitons are self-reinforcing localized wave packets arising from a balance of linear and nonlinear effects. This definition encompasses the interplay of nonlinear gain and loss, leading to the concept of dissipative solitons that has been instrumental in understanding the wide variety of mode locking phenomena in ultrafast optics. To date, most studies have involved the group velocity dispersion as a key ingredient for soliton generation. Here, we report on a novel kind of soliton, both theoretically and experimentally, which builds up in spectrally confined cavities when dispersion is practi…
We investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of a ring cavity filled with a non-instantaneous Kerr medium and driven by a coherent injected beam. We show the existence of a stable mixed-mode solution that can be either extended or localized in space. The mixed-mode solutions are obtained in a regime where Turing instability (often called modulational instability) interacts with self-pulsing phenomenon (Andronov-Hopf bifurcation). We numerically describe the transition from stationary inhomogeneous solutions to a branch of mixed-mode solutions. We characterize this transition by constructing the…

We study pattern formation associated with the polarization degree of freedom of the electric field amplitude in a mean field model describing a nonlinear Kerr medium close to a two-photon resonance, placed inside a ring cavity with flat mirrors and driven by a coherent $\hat x$-polarized plane-wave field. In the self-focusing case, for negative detunings the pattern arises naturally from a codimension two bifurcation. For a critical value of the field intensity there are two wave numbers that become unstable simultaneously, corresponding to two Turing-like instabilities. Considered alone, one…
We introduce a model of a two-dimensional (2D) optical waveguide with Kerr nonlinearity, linear and quintic losses, cubic gain, and temporal-domain filtering. In the general case, temporal dispersion is also included, although it is not necessary. The model provides for description of a nonlinear planar waveguide incorporated into a closed optical cavity. It takes the form of a 2D cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation with an anisotropy of a novel type: the equation is diffractive in one direction, and diffusive in the other. By means of systematic simulations, we demonstrate that the model g…
We introduce a new model describing multiple resonances in Kerr optical cavities. It perfectly agrees quantitatively with the Ikeda map and predicts complex phenomena such as super cavity solitons and coexistence of multiple nonlinear states.
We study a ring cavity filled with a slab of a right-handed material and a slab of a left-handed material. Both layers are assumed to be nonlinear Kerr media. First, we derive a model for the propagation of light in a left-handed material. By constructing a mean-field model, we show that the sign of diffraction can be made either positive or negative in this resonator, depending on the thicknesses of the layers. Subsequently, we demonstrate that the dynamical behavior of the modulation instability is strongly affected by the sign of the diffraction coefficient. Finally, we study the dissipativ…
We report the existence of vectorial dark dissipative solitons in optical cavities subject to a coherently injected beam. We assume that the resonator is operating in a normal dispersion regime far from any modulational instability. We show that the vectorial front locking mechanism allows for the stabilisation of dark dissipative structures. These structures differ by their temporal duration and their state of polarization. We characterize them by constructing their heteroclinic snaking bifurcation diagram showing evidence of multistability within a finite range of the control parameter.
This article discusses self-organization in cold atoms via light-mediated interactions induced by feedback from a single retro-reflecting mirror. Diffractive dephasing between the pump beam and the spontaneous sidebands selects the lattice period. Spontaneous breaking of the rotational and translational symmetry occur in the 2D plane transverse to the pump. We elucidate how diffractive ripples couple sites on the self-induced atomic lattice. The nonlinear phase shift of the atomic cloud imprinted onto the optical beam is the parameter determining coupling strength. The interaction can be tailo…

It has been recently uncovered that coherent structures in microresonators such as cavity solitons and patterns are intimately related to Kerr frequency combs. In this work, we present a general analysis of the regions of existence and stability of cavity solitons and patterns in the Lugiato-Lefever equation, a mean-field model that finds applications in many different nonlinear optical cavities. We demonstrate that the rich dynamics and coexistence of multiple solutions in the Lugiato-Lefever equation are of key importance to understanding frequency comb generation. A detailed map of how and …
We address the propagation of light beams in longitudinally modulated PT-symmetric lattices, built as arrays of couplers with periodically varying separation between their channels, and show a number of possibilities for efficient diffraction control available in such non-conservative structures. The dynamics of light in such lattices crucially depends on the ratio of the switching length for the straight segments of each coupler and the longitudinal lattice period. Depending on the longitudinal period, one can achieve either beam rectification, when the input light propagates at a fixed angle…
The propagation dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) ring-Airy beams is studied in the framework of the fractional Schrödinger equation, which includes saturable or cubic self-focusing or defocusing nonlinearity and Lévy index ((LI) alias for the fractionality) taking values $1\leqα\leq 2$. The model applies to light propagation in a chain of optical cavities emulating fractional diffraction. Management is included by making the diffraction and/or nonlinearity coefficients periodic functions of the propagation distance, $ζ$. The management format with the nonlinearity coefficient decaying as $1/ζ$…
