We improve the determination of the Higgs-boson mass in the MSSM with heavy superpartners, by computing the two-loop threshold corrections to the quartic Higgs coupling that involve both the strong and the electroweak gauge couplings. Combined with earlier results, this completes the calculation of the two-loop QCD corrections to the quartic coupling at the SUSY scale. We also compare different computations of the relation between the quartic coupling and the pole mass of the Higgs boson at the EW scale. We find that the numerical impact of the new corrections on the prediction for the Higgs mass is modest, but comparable to the accuracy of the Higgs-mass measurement at the LHC.
The parameter space of the Constrained Minimal supersymmetric Standard Model is considered. It is shown that for the particular choice of parameters there are some regions where long-living charged superparticles exist. Two regions of interest are the co-annihilation region with light staus, and the region with large negative trilinear scalar coupling A distinguished by light stops. The phenomenology of long-living superparticles is briefly discussed.
We present several advances in the effective field theory calculation of the Higgs mass in MSSM scenarios with heavy superparticles. In particular, we compute the dominant two-loop threshold corrections to the quartic Higgs coupling for generic values of the relevant SUSY-breaking parameters, including all contributions controlled by the strong gauge coupling and by the third-family Yukawa couplings. We also study the effects of a representative subset of dimension-six operators in the effective theory valid below the SUSY scale. Our results will allow for an improved determination of the Higg…
In the MSSM extended by a complete vectorlike family, precise top, bottom and tau Yukawa coupling unification can be achieved assuming SUSY threshold corrections which are typical for comparable superpartner masses. Furthermore, the unification is possible with a large unified coupling, implying that all three fermion masses can be simultaneously close to their IR fixed points. Assuming unified Yukawa couplings of order one or larger, the preferred common scale of new physics (superpartners and vectorlike matter) is in the 3 TeV to 30 TeV range, with larger couplings favoring smaller scales. S…
We construct an extension of the MSSM in which scalar superpartners can naturally be as heavy as 1 TeV. In the MSSM, the most significant fine tuning stems from the logarithmically enhanced top-stop loop contribution to the soft Higgs mass. We combine supersymmetry with the "simplest little Higgs" to render this loop finite, thereby removing the large logarithm even in models in which superpartner masses are generated at high scales such as in supergravity. Our model predicts an extended Higgs sector, superpartner masses near a TeV and little Higgs partners at a few TeV.
We use the IR fixed point predictions for gauge couplings and the top Yukawa coupling in the MSSM extended with vectorlike families to infer the scale of vectorlike matter and superpartners. We quote results for several extensions of the MSSM and present results in detail for the MSSM extended with one complete vectorlike family. We find that for a unified gauge coupling $α_G > 0.3$ vectorlike matter or superpartners are expected within 1.7 TeV (2.5 TeV) based on all three gauge couplings being simultaneously within 1.5\% (5\%) from observed values. This range extends to about 4 TeV for $α_G >…
We analyse the sensitivity of quark flavour-changing observables to the MSSM, in a regime of heavy superpartner masses. We analyse four distinct and motivated frameworks characterising the structure of the soft-breaking terms by means of approximate flavour symmetries. We show that a set of six low-energy observables with realistic chances of improvement in the near future, namely $ΔM_{s,d}$, $ε_K$, $ε_K'/ε_K$, $\mathcal{B} (K\to πν\barν)$, and the phase of $D$--$\bar D$ mixing, could play a very important role in charactering these frameworks in a regime of superpartner masses up to $\mathcal…
Supersymmetric loop corrections induce potentially large CP-violating couplings of the Higgs bosons to nucleons and electrons that do not vanish in the limit of heavy superpartners. The Higgs-mediated CP-odd four-fermion operators are enhanced by tan^3 beta and induce electric dipole moments of heavy atoms which exceed the current experimental bounds for the electroweak scale Higgs masses and tan beta > 10. If only the first two sfermion generations are heavy, the Higgs-mediated contributions typically dominate over the Barr-Zee type two-loop diagrams at tan beta > 30.
We calculate the leading contribution to the left-right asymmetry in polarized Møller scattering from the superpartners in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), using an effective lagrangian approach. We determine the maximum asymmetry that can result from the superpartners in the MSSM under different scenarios, and discuss the feasibility of a high-precision, low-energy ($\sqrt{s}\approx 200~{\rm MeV}$) Møller scattering experiment to see supersymmetry.
We consider the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) without imposing relations on the superpartner masses that arise in grand unified theories. Given an arbitrary pattern of superpartner masses (consistent with experimental constraints), it may happen that the scalar potential is actually unstable, even though all scalar masses-squared are positive at the weak scale $M_W$. This is most likely to happen if the running mass-squared in a ``flat'' direction in field space becomes negative at some scale $Q_0$ which is well below the GUT scale. In this case, either this pattern of masses is…
Recent LHC searches have provided strong evidence for the Higgs, a boson whose gauge quantum numbers coincide with those of a SM fermion, the neutrino. This raises the mandatory question of whether Higgs and neutrino can be related by supersymmetry. We study this possibility in a model in which an approximate R-symmetry acts as a lepton number. We show that Higgs physics resembles that of the SM-Higgs with the exception of a novel invisible decay into Goldstino and neutrino with a branching fraction that can be as large as ~10%. Based on naturalness criteria, only stops and sbottoms are requir…
A small Higgs mass parameter m_{h_u}^2 can be insensitive to various trial heavy stop masses, if a universal soft squared mass is assumed for the chiral superpartners and the Higgs boson at the grand unification (GUT) scale, and a focus point (FP) of m_{h_u}^2 appears around the stop mass scale. The challenges in the FP scenario are (1) a too heavy stop mass (~ 5 TeV) needed for the 126 GeV Higgs mass and (2) the too high gluino mass bound (> 1.4 TeV). For a successful FP scenario, we consider (1) a superheavy right-hand (RH) neutrino and (2) the first and second generations of hierarchically …
A model is presented in which O(10 TeV) stop masses, typically required by the Higgs boson mass in supersymmetric models, do not originate from soft supersymmetry breaking terms that would drive the Higgs mass squared parameter to large negative values but rather from the mixing with vectorlike partners. Their contribution to the Higgs mass squared parameter is reduced to threshold corrections and, thus, it is one loop suppressed compared to usual scenarios. New fermion and scalar partners of the top quark with O(10 TeV) masses are predicted.
In the ``non-decoupling'' region of the Higgs sector in MSSM, the heavier CP-even Higgs boson (H^0) is Standard-Model-like and close to the charged Higgs bosons (H^\pm) in mass, while other neutral Higgs bosons (h^0,A^0) are lighter and near the Z mass. This scenario is consistent with the current Higgs search limits, although the improved sensitivity for a light charged Higgs boson search t -> H^+ b may result in certain degree of tension. We demonstrate that it can pass the stringent flavor constraints, provided there are other light SUSY particles to contribute in the loop induced processes…
Uncertainties of the MSSM predictions are due to an unknown SUSY breaking mechanism. To reduce these uncertainties, one usually imposes constraints on the MSSM parameter space. Recently, two new constraints became available, both from astrophysics: WMAP precise measurement of the amount of the Dark Matter in the Universe and EGRET data on an excess in diffuse gamma ray flux. Being interpreted as a manifestation of supersymmetry these data lead to severe constraints on parameter space and single out a very restricted area. The key feature of this area is the splitting of light gauginos from hea…
An unconventional version of supersymmetry leads to the following highly testable predictions: (1) The Higgs boson has an R-parity of -1, so it can only be produced as one member of a pair of superpartners. (2) The only superpartners are scalar bosons, so neutralinos etc. do not exist. (3) The most likely candidate for cold dark matter is therefore a sneutrino. (4) The Higgs and other bosonic superpartners have an unconventional equation of motion. These predictions are associated with new interpretations of Yukawa couplings, supersymmetry, gauge fields, and Lorentz invariance.
We review electroweak symmetry breaking in supersymmetric models with a compact fifth dimension, the interval. We show how boundary conditions for hypermultiplets can be obtained dynamically by brane mass terms and present formulae for the spectrum in the presence of general bulk mass matrices. After giving a brief overview on the literature of models, we describe in detail a recently proposed model that at energies below the compactification scale reduces to the MSSM with a very peculiar superpartner spectrum.
We present a qualitatively new approach to discover Higgs bosons of the MSSM at the LHC using jet substructure techniques applied to boosted Higgs decays. These techniques are ideally suited to the MSSM, since the lightest Higgs boson overwhelmingly decays to $b\bar{b}$ throughout the entire parameter space, while the heavier neutral Higgs bosons, if light enough to be produced in a cascade, also predominantly decay to $b\bar{b}$. The Higgs production we consider arises from superpartner production where superpartners cascade decay into Higgs bosons. We study this mode of Higgs production for …
The cross section for the production of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in association with a high-pT hadronic jet, calculated in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), is presented. The expectations for the hadronic cross section at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed using reasonable kinematical cuts. In particular the contributions from superpartner loops to the cross section and their dependence on the parameters of the MSSM are investigated and found to be significant. Comparisons show that the production rate for h0 + jet in the MSSM can differ widely fro…
We study the constraints on neutralino dark matter in minimal low energy supersymmetry models and the case of heavy lepton and quark scalar superpartners. For values of the Higgsino and gaugino mass parameters of the order of the weak scale, direct detection experiments are already putting strong bounds on models in which the dominant interactions between the dark matter candidates and nuclei are governed by Higgs boson exchange processes, particularly for positive values of the Higgsino mass parameter mu. For negative values of mu, there can be destructive interference between the amplitudes …
We explore the possibility of distinguishing the SM-like MSSM Higgs boson from the SM Higgs boson via Higgs boson pair production at future muon collider. We study the behavior of the production cross section in SM and MSSM with Higgs boson mass for various choices of MSSM parameters tan βand m\sub A. We observe that at fixed CM energy, in the SM, the total cross section increases with the increase in Higgs boson mass whereas this trend is reversed for the MSSM case. The changes that occur for the MSSM case in comparison to the SM predictions are quantified in terms of the relative percentage …
The corrections to the MSSM Higgs boson masses and couplings performed in this millennium are briefly reviewed. For the lightest MSSM Higgs boson mass, m_h, we list the current status of the intrinsic uncertainties (due to unknown higher-order corrections) and the parametric uncertainties (due to the imperfect experimental knowledge of the input parameters). The need for high-precision calculations in the MSSM Higgs boson sector is exemplified in a realistic example.
Starting with the two-loop effective potential of the MSSM, and assuming a supersymmetric scale well above $M_Z$, we derive a simple analytical approximation for the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass including resummation of higher order logarithmic terms via RG-improvement and finite non-logarithmic terms up to ${\cal O}(α_sα_t)$. This formula describes the most relevant radiative corrections to the MSSM Higgs boson mass, in particular, those associated with non-zero top-squark mixing.
We study neutralino sectors in extensions of the MSSM that dynamically generate the mu-term. The extra neutralino states are superpartners of the Higgs singlets and/or additional gauge bosons. The extended models may have distinct lightest neutralino properties which can have important influences on their phenomenology. We consider constraints on the lightest neutralino from LEP, Tevatron, and (g-2)_mu measurements and the relic density of the dark matter. The lightest neutralino can be extremely light and/or dominated by its singlino component which does not couple directly to SM particles ex…
Different approaches are used for the calculation of the SM-like Higgs boson mass in the MSSM: the fixed-order diagrammatic approach is accurate for low SUSY scales; the EFT approach, for high SUSY scales. Hybrid approaches, combining fixed-order and EFT calculations, allow to obtain a precise prediction also for intermediary SUSY scales. Here, we briefly discuss the hybrid approach implemented into the code FeynHiggs. In addition, we show how the refined Higgs mass prediction was used to define new MSSM Higgs benchmark scenarios.
For superpartner masses not much heavier than the weak scale $M=M_{\rm W}$, large logarithmic corrections of the Sudakov type arise at TeV energies. In this paper we summarize recent results of supersymmetric (susy) electroweak radiative corrections for sfermion and charged Higgs production at $e^+e^-$ colliders in the MSSM. The results are given to subleading logarithmic (SL) accuracy to all orders in perturbation theory in the ``light'' susy-mass scenario. Prospects for the determination of $\tan β\geq 10$ are discussed which is independent of soft susy-breaking terms to SL accuracy.
We briefly review the phenomenological implications of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with explicit radiative breaking of CP invariance in the Higgs sector for the LEP2 and Tevatron colliders.
The high precision measurements of the Higgs mass and couplings at the future Higgs factories are sensitive to the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Focused on the dominant stop sector contributions, we study the implication of the Higgs precision measurements on MSSM using multi-variable $χ^2$ fit. The results show nice complementarity between the indirect searches at Higgs factories and the direct searches at the current LHC program.
The possibility of generating a large trilinear $A_t$ soft supersymmetry breaking coupling at low energies through renormalisation group evolution in the 5D MSSM is investigated. Using the power law running in five dimensions and a compactification scale in the 10-$10^3$ TeV range, to show that gluino mass may drive a large enough $A_t$ to reproduce the measured Higgs mass and have a light stop superpartner below $\sim 1$ TeV as preferred by the fine tuning argument for the Higgs mass.
In this work, we study the implication of Higgs precision measurements at future Higgs factories on the MSSM parameter space, focusing on the dominant stop sector contributions. We perform a multi-variable fit to both the signal strength for various Higgs decay channels at Higgs factories and the Higgs mass. The chi-square fit results show sensitivity to mA, tan beta, stop mass parameter mSUSY as well as the stop left-right mixing parameter Xt. We also study the impact of the Higgs mass prediction on the MSSM and compare the sensitivities of different Higgs factories.
We demonstrate how CP violation manifests itself in the Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). Starting with a brief introduction to CP violation in the MSSM and its effects on the Higgs sector, we discuss some phenomenological aspects of the Higgs sector CP violation based on the two scenarios called CPX and Trimixing
The spectrum of supersymmetric theories with R-parity violation are much more weakly constrained than that of supersymmetric theories with a stable neutralino. We investigate the signatures of supersymmetry at the LHCb experiment in the region of parameter space where the neutralino decay leaves a displaced vertex. We find sensitivity to squark production up to squark masses of order 1 TeV. We note that if the Higgs decays to neutralinos in this scenario, LHCb should see the lightest Higgs boson before ATLAS and CMS.
The structure of the Higgs sector in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is reviewed at the one-loop level. An on-shell renormalization scheme of the MSSM Higgs sector is presented in detail together with the complete list of formulae for the neutral Higgs masses at the one-loop level. The results of a complete one- loop calculation for the mass spectrum of the neutral MSSM Higgs bosons and the quality of simpler Born-like approximations are discussed for sfermion and gaugino masses in the range of the electroweak scale.
The implications of the LHC SUSY searches as well as the discovery of a new bosonic state compatible with the lightest Higgs boson will be discussed in the context of constrained and general MSSM scenarios. Exploring the MSSM through the Higgs sector is an alternative and complementary path to direct searches, and tight constraints on the MSSM parameter space can be obtained.
I summarize results of two-loop effective potential calculations of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.
The effective potential in the MSSM at the one-loop level is used to evaluate masses of the neutral Higgs scalars and to study finite-temperature phase transition. The CP violation in the Higgs sector, which is induced by the spontaneous mechanism or by the complex parameters in the MSSM through radiative corrections, is determined at zero and finite temperatures.
We show that large ($> 100$ GeV) mass splittings between the charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) and the neutral Higgs bosons ($H^0$ and $A^0$) are possible in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Such splittings occur when the $μ$ parameter is considerably larger than the common SUSY scale, $M_{SUSY}$, and have significant consequences for MSSM Higgs searches at future colliders.
We propose a supersymmetric extension of the standard model which is a realistic alternative to the MSSM, and which has several advantages. No ``mu'' supersymmetric Higgs/Higgsino mass parameter is needed for sufficiently heavy charginos. An approximate U(1) R symmetry naturally guarantees that tan beta is large, explaining the top/bottom quark mass hierarchy. This symmetry also suppresses supersymmetric contributions to anomalous magnetic moments, b to s gamma, and proton decay, and these processes place no lower bounds on superpartner masses, even at large tan beta. The soft supersymmetry br…
The theoretical predictions in the MSSM for Higgs-boson production at a future e^+e^- Linear Collider and Higgs-boson decay processes are discussed focusing in particular on recent diagrammatic two-loop results in the MSSM Higgs sector. The present status of the theoretical predictions is briefly summarized, and it is emphasized that considerable improvements will be necessary in order to match the high experimental accuracy achievable at a future Linear Collider.
The theoretical structure of the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is briefly described. An outline of Higgs phenomenology at future lepton colliders is presented, and some opportunities for probing the physics of the MSSM Higgs sector at an e-e- collider are considered.
The LEP era has brought immense progress in searches for Higgs bosons over the last 12 years which will guide searches at future colliders. The evolution of the Higgs boson mass limits are reviewed with the focus on results from general parameter scans in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) in contrast to the so-called benchmark limits. The hint for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson of 115.6 GeV can also be interpreted as a preference for a Higgs boson of that mass in the MSSM. Further small data excesses allow the hypothesis that the neutral Higgs bosons of the M…
In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV can be obtained with moderately heavy scalar top superpartners provided they are highly mixed. The source of this mixing, a soft trilinear stop-stop-Higgs coupling, can result in the appearance of charge- and color-breaking minima in the scalar potential of the theory. If such a vacuum exists and is energetically favorable, the Standard Model-like vacuum can decay to it via quantum tunnelling. In this work we investigate the conditions under which such exotic vacua arise, and we compute the tunnelling rates to t…
Dismissing traditional naturalness concerns while embracing the Higgs boson mass measurement and unification motivates careful analysis of trans-TeV supersymmetric theories. We take an effective field theory (EFT) approach, matching the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) onto the Standard Model (SM) EFT by integrating out heavy superpartners, and evolving MSSM and SMEFT parameters according to renormalization group equations in each regime. Our matching calculation is facilitated by the recent covariant diagrams formulation of functional matching techniques, with the full one-loop SU…
In this contribution a brief review about the status of higher order corrections to Higgs boson production within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is given. Furthermore the first activities towards third-order corrections in the Standard Model (SM) are discussed.
We consider the effects of a fourth generation of chiral fermions within the MSSM. Such a model offers the possibility of having the lightest neutral Higgs boson significantly heavier than in the three generation MSSM. The model is highly constrained by precision electroweak data, along with Higgs searches at the Tevatron. In addition, the requirements of perturbative unitarity and direct searches for heavy quarks imply that the four generation MSSM is only consistent for tan beta ~ 1 and highly tuned 4th generation fermion masses.
We present a comprehensive analysis on the MSSM Higgs sector CP violation at photon colliders including the chargino contributions as well as the contributions of other charged particles. The chargino loop contributions can be important for the would-be CP odd Higgs production at photon colliders. Polarization asymmetries are indispensable in determining the CP properties of neutral Higgs bosons.
This paper is the completion of an earlier work arXiv:1207.4867 which involves the derivation of oblique corrections in the MSSM at one loop. In terms of the two-component spinor formalism, which is new in compared with those used in the literature, the contributions arising from the fermion superpartners i.e, neutralino-chargino sector to self-energy of standard model electroweak gauge bosons are calculated. Corresponding descendants the $S$, $T$ and $U$ parameters are presented. The validity of our results is examined in two ways, which are then followed by detailed analysis on the results i…
We study the prospects for distinguishing the CP-even Higgs boson of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) from the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson by measuring its branching ratios at an e+e- linear collider. The regions of the M_A - tan beta plane in which an MSSM Higgs boson can be distinguished from the SM Higgs boson depend strongly upon the supersymmetric parameters that enter the radiative corrections to the Higgs mass matrix and the Higgs couplings to fermions. In some regions of parameter space it is possible to extract the supersymmetric correction to the …
In the framework of the effective field theory approach to heavy supersymmetry radiative corrections in the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) for the effective potential decomposition up to the dimension-six operators are calculated. Symbolic expressions for the threshold corrections induced by $F$- and $D$- soft supersymmetry breaking terms are derived and the Higgs boson mass spectrum respecting the condition $m_h=$125 GeV for the lightest $CP$-even scalar is evaluated.
We propose a supersymmetric extension of the standard model which does not have a ``mu'' supersymmetric Higgs mass parameter. The matter content of the MSSM is extended with three additional chiral superfields: one singlet, an SU(2) triplet and a color octet, and an approximate U(1)_R symmetry naturally guarantees that tan(beta) is large, explaining the top/bottom quark mass hierarchy. Unlike in the MSSM, there are significant upper bounds on the masses of superpartners, including an upper bound of 114 GeV on the mass of the lightest chargino. However the MSSM bound on the lightest Higgs mass …
This lecture discusses the Higgs boson sectors of the SM and the MSSM, in particular in view of the recently discovered particle at \sim 125.5 GeV. It also covers their connection to electroweak precision physics and the implications for the consistency tests of the respective model.
The problems of Standard Model as well as questions related to Higgs boson properties led to the need for modeling of ttH associated production and Higgs boson decay to top quark pair within the MSSM model. With the help of computer programs MadGraph, Pythia and Delphes and using the latest kinematic cuts taken from experimental data obtained at the LHC we predicted the masses of MSSM Higgs bosons, A and H.
We consider tan(beta)-enhanced quantum effects in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) including those from the Higgs sector. To this end, we match the MSSM to an effective two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM), assuming that all SUSY particles are heavy, and calculate the coefficients of the operators that vanish or are suppressed in the MSSM at tree-level. Our result clarifies the dependence of the large-tan(beta) resummation on the renormalization convention for tan(beta), and provides analytic expressions for the Yukawa and trilinear Higgs interactions. The numerical effect is analyze…
Some possibilities to test the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at the LHC and future $e^+e^-$ colliders are discussed. This includes precision coupling strength measurements, the search for additional Higgs bosons as well as their decay to supersymmetric particles.
We discuss a few new characteristic features of the loop-induced MSSM Higgs-sector CP violation at the LHC based on two scenarios: (i) CPX and (ii) Trimixing.
HFOLD (Higgs Full One Loop Decays) is a Fortran program package for calculating all MSSM Higgs two-body decay widths and the corresponding branching ratios at full one-loop level. The package is done in the SUSY Parameter Analysis convention and supports the SUSY Les Houches Accord input and output format.
Diagrammatic two-loop results are presented for the leading QCD corrections to the masses of the neutral CP-even Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The results are valid for arbitrary values of the parameters of the Higgs and scalar top sector of the MSSM. Their impact on a precise prediction for the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is briefly discussed.
We consider the measurement of the trilinear couplings of the neutral Higgs bosons~($H^0, h^0$) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model~(MSSM) at a high energy $e^+$ $e^-$ linear collider in the light of the discovery of a Higgs boson at the CERN Large Hadron Collider~(LHC). We identify the state observed at the LHC with the lightest CP-even Higgs boson of the MSSM. We implement this constraint, as well as all the other relevant experimental constraints, on the parameter space of the MSSM in order to study the feasibility of measuring the trilinear couplings of the neutral Higgs bosons. F…
These lectures were presented at the TASI 2012 summer school to a mixture of graduate students in particle theory and cosmology. They serve as an elementary introduction to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and discuss the implications of a 125 GeV Higgs boson for this theory. Some familiarity with the Standard Model is assumed.
