We investigate confinement-induced resonances in atom-ion quantum mixtures confined in hybrid traps. Specifically, we consider an ion confined in a time-dependent radio-frequency Paul trap with linear geometry, while the atom is constrained to move into a quasi-one-dimensional optical waveguide within the ion trap. We evaluate the impact of the ion intrinsic micromotion on the resonance position. Thus, we solve the atom-ion dynamics semiclassically, namely the atom dynamics is governed by the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation, whereas the ion motion is described by the classical Hamilton equations. We find that the energy of the ion provided by the oscillating radiofrequency fields can affect the resonance position substantially. Notwithstanding, the peculiar phenomenology of those resonances regarding perfect transmission and reflection is still observable. These findings indicate that the intrinsic micromotion of the ion is not detrimental for the occurrence of the resonance and that its position can be controlled by the radiofrequency fields. This provides an additional mean for tuning atom-ion interactions in low spatial dimensions. The study represents an important advancement in the scattering physics of compound atomic quantum systems in time-dependent traps.
Hybrid quantum systems that unite laser-cooled trapped ions and ultracold quantum gases in a single experimental setup have opened a rapidly advancing field of study, including Quantum chemistry, polaron physics, quantum information processing and quantum simulations. We present a fully developed and tested ion trap chip and propose a flat chip trap that can be placed beneath the ion trap. This design substantially addresses the difficulties specific to hybrid traps and features well-aligned chips that allow for independent adjustment of the depth of the atomic trap and the confinement and pos…
We theoretically study the effects of trap-confinement and interatomic interactions on Josephson oscillations (JO) and macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a trap which has a symmetric double-well (DW) potential along z-axis and 2D harmonic potentials along x- and y-axis. We consider three types of model interaction potentials: contact, long-range dipolar and finite-range potentials. Our results show that by changing the aspect ratio between the axial and radial trap sizes, one can induce a transition from JO to MQST for contact interactions…
Using discrete and continuous variable subsystems, hybrid approaches to quantum information could enable more quantum computational power for the same physical resources. Here, we propose a hybrid scheme that can be used to generate the necessary Gaussian and non-Gaussian operations for universal continuous variable quantum computing in trapped ions. This scheme utilizes two linear spin-motion interactions to generate a broad set of non-linear effective spin-motion interactions including one and two mode squeezing, beam splitter, and trisqueezing operations in trapped ion systems. We discuss p…
In this article we describe the design, construction and implementation of our ion-atom hybrid system incorporating a high resolution time of flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS). Potassium atoms ($^{39}$K) in a Magneto Optical Trap (MOT) and laser cooled calcium ions ($^{40}$Ca$^+$) in a linear Paul trap are spatially overlapped and the combined trap is integrated with a TOFMS for radial extraction and detection of reaction products. We also present some experimental results showing interactions between $^{39}$K$^+$ and $^{39}$K, $^{40}$Ca$^+$ and $^{39}$K$^+$ as well as $^{40}$Ca$^+$ and $^{39}$…
We have developed an efficient approach for treating low-dimensional few-body processes in confined geometry of atomic and hybrid atom-ion traps. It based on the split-operator method in 2D discrete-variable representation (DVR) suggested by V. Melezhik for integration of the few-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We give a brief review of the application to resonant ultracold atomic processes and discuss our latest results on hybrid atomic-ion systems. Prospects for the application of the method in other hot problems of the physics of low-dimensional few-particle systems are als…
In order to study interactions of atomic ions with ultracold neutral atoms, it is important to have sub-$μ$m control over positioning ion crystals. Serving for this purpose, we introduce a microfabricated planar ion trap featuring 21 DC electrodes. The ion trap is controlled by a home-made FPGA voltage source providing independently variable voltages to each of the DC electrodes. To assure stable positioning of ion crystals with respect to trapped neutral atoms, we integrate into the overall design a compact mirror magneto optical chip trap (mMOT) for cooling and confining neutral $^{87}$Rb at…
We demonstrate a compact magneto-optical trap (MOT) of alkaline-earth atoms using a nanofabricated diffraction grating chip. A single input laser beam, resonant with the broad $^1$S$_0\,\rightarrow \,^1$P$_1$ transition of strontium, forms the MOT in combination with three diffracted beams from the grating chip and a magnetic field produced by permanent magnets. A differential pumping tube limits the effect of the heated, effusive source on the background pressure in the trapping region. The system has a total volume of around 2.4 L. With our setup, we have trapped up to $5 \times 10^6$ $^{88}…
In the last 5 years, a novel field of physics and chemistry has developed in which cold trapped ions and ultracold atomic gases are brought into contact with each other. Combining ion traps with traps for neutral atoms yields a variety of new possibilities for research and experiments. These range from studies of cold atom-ion collisions and atom-ion chemistry to applications in quantum information science and condensed matter related research. In this article we give a brief introduction into this new field and describe some of the perspectives for its future development.
For conventional ion traps, the trapping potential is close to independent of the electronic state, providing confinement for ions dependent primarily on their charge-to-mass ratio $Q/m$. In contrast, storing ions within an optical dipole trap results in state-dependent confinement. Here we experimentally study optical dipole potentials for $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}^+$ ions stored within two distinctive traps operating at 532 nm and 1064 nm. We prepare the ions in either the $6\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{1/2}}$ electronic ground or the $5\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{3/2}}$/ $5\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{5/2}}$ metastable exc…
We propose and analyze neutral atom traps generated by vortices imprinted by magnetic field pulse sequences in type-II superconducting disks and rings. We compute the supercurrent distribution and magnetic field resulting from the vortices in the superconductor. Different patterns of vortices can be written by versatile loading field sequences. We discuss in detail procedures to generate quadrupole traps, self-sufficient traps and ring traps based on superconducting disks and rings. The ease of creating these traps and the low current noise in supercurrent carrying structures makes our approac…
Trapping of microparticles and aerosols is of great interest for physics and chemistry. We report microparticle trapping in multipole linear Paul trap geometries, operating under Standard Ambient Temperature and Pressure (SATP) conditions. An 8-electrode and a 12-electrode linear trap geometries have been designed and tested with an aim to achieve trapping for larger number of particles and to study microparticle dynamical stability in electrodynamic fields. We report emergence of planar and volume ordered structures of the microparticles, depending on the a.c. trapping frequency and particle …
We have conceived, built and operated a 'half-open' cylindrical Penning trap for the confinement and laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions. This trap allows fluorescence detection employing a solid angle which is about one order of magnitude larger than in conventional cylindrical Penning traps. At the same time, the desired electrostatic and magnetostatic properties of a closed-endcap cylindrical Penning trap are preserved in this congfiuration. We give a detailed account on the design and confinement properties, a characterization of the trap and show first results of light collection wi…
We have realized Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of 87Rb in the F=2, m_F=2 hyperfine substate in a hybrid trap, consisting of a quadrupole magnetic field and a single optical dipole beam. The symmetry axis of the quadrupole magnetic trap coincides with the optical beam axis, which gives stronger axial confinement than previous hybrid traps. After loading 2x10^6 atoms at 14 muK from a quadrupole magnetic trap into the hybrid trap, we perform efficient forced evaporation and reach the onset of BEC at a temperature of 0.5 muK and with 4x10^5 atoms. We also obtain thermal clouds of 1x10^6 atoms b…
We demonstrate trapping of an ultracold gas of neutral atoms in a macroscopic ac electric trap. Three-dimensional confinement is obtained by switching between two saddle-point configurations of the electric field. Stable trapping is observed in a narrow range of switching frequencies around 60 Hz. The dynamic confinement of the atoms is directly visualized at different phases of the ac switching cycle. We observe about 10^5 Rb atoms in the 1 mm^3 large and several microkelvins deep trap with a lifetime of approximately 5 s.
An integrated optical dipole trap uses two-color (red and blue-detuned) traveling evanescent wave fields for trapping cold neutral atoms. To achieve longitudinal confinement, we propose using an integrated optical waveguide coupler, which provides a potential gradient along the beam propagation direction sufficient to confine atoms. This integrated optical dipole trap can support an atomic ensemble with a large optical depth due to its small mode area. Its quasi-TE0 waveguide mode has an advantage over the HE11 mode of a nanofiber, with little inhomogeneous Zeeman broadening at the trapping re…
Long range polarization forces between ions and neutral atoms result in large elastic scattering cross sections, e.g., 10^6 a.u. for Na+ on Na or Ca+ on Na at cold and ultracold temperatures. This suggests that a hybrid ion-neutral trap should offer a general means for significant sympathetic cooling of atomic or molecular ions. We present SIMION 7.0 simulation results concerning the advantages and limitations of sympathetic cooling within a hybrid trap apparatus, consisting of a linear rf Paul trap concentric with a Na magneto-optical trap (MOT). This paper explores the impact of various heat…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of small boson ensembles in a one-dimensional optical lattice is explored upon a sudden quench of an additional harmonic trap from strong to weak confinement. We find that the competition between the initial localization and the repulsive interaction leads to a resonant response of the system for intermediate quench amplitudes, corresponding to avoided crossings in the many-body eigenspectrum with varying final trap frequency. In particular, we show that these avoided crossings can be utilized to prepare the system in a desired state. The dynamical response is show…
We present an unique experimental arrangement which permits the simultaneous trapping and cooling of ions and neutral atoms, within a Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity. The versatility of this hybrid trap experiment enables a variety of studies with trapped mixtures. The motivations behind the production of such a hybrid trap system are explained, followed by details of how the experiment is put together. Several experiments that have been performed with this system are presented and some opportunities with this system are discussed. However the primary emphasis is focussed on the aspects that pertain t…
ALPHA is an international project that has recently begun experimentation at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility. The primary goal of ALPHA is stable trapping of cold antihydrogen atoms with the ultimate goal of precise spectroscopic comparisons with hydrogen. We discuss the status of the ALPHA project and the prospects for antihydrogen trapping.
We report 2D confinement of Rb 87 atoms in a Laguerre-Gaussian laser beam. Changing of the sign of the detuning from the atomic resonance dramatically alters the geometry of the confinement. With the laser detuned to the blue, the atoms are confined to the dark, central node of the Laguerre-Gaussian laser mode. This trapping method leads to low ac Stark shifts to the atomic levels. Alternatively, by detuning the laser to the red of the resonance, we confine atoms to the high intensity outer ring in a multiply-connected, toroidal configuration. We model the confined atoms to determine azimuthal…
We present the implementation of tailored trapping potentials for ultracold gases on an atom chip. We realize highly elongated traps with box-like confinement along the long, axial direction combined with conventional harmonic confinement along the two radial directions. The design, fabrication and characterization of the atom chip and the box traps is described. We load ultracold ($\lesssim1 μ$K) clouds of $^{87}$Rb in a box trap, and demonstrate Bose-gas focusing as a means to characterize these atomic clouds in arbitrarily shaped potentials. Our results show that box-like axial potentials o…
A hybrid ion-neutral trap provides an ideal system to study collisional dynamics between ions and neutrals. This system provides a general cooling method that can be applied to optically inaccessible species and can also potentially cool internal degrees of freedom. The long range polarization potentials ($V\propto-α/r^4$) between ions and neutrals result in large scattering cross sections at cold temperatures, making the hybrid trap a favorable system for efficient sympathetic cooling of ions by collisions with neutral atoms. We present experimental evidence of sympathetic cooling in a hybrid…
Confinement induced resonances (CIR) in quasi-1D systems have been theoretically predicted and observed in various ultracold atomic gases. Here a regularized local frame transformation method is developed to treat CIR in a quasi-1D system that has an arbitrary transverse trap shape in general. The method is applied to predict the CIR position in a system whose transverse geometry is a square well.
Confinement induced resonance (CIR) is a useful tool for the control of the interaction between ultracold atoms. In most cases the CIR occurs when the characteristic length atrap of the confinement is similar as the scattering length as of the two atoms in the free three-dimensional (3D) space. If there is a CIR which can occur with weak bare interaction, i.e., under the condition $a_{\rm{trap}}\gg a_s$, then it can be realized for much more systems, even without the help of a magnetic Feshbach resonance, and would be very useful. In a previous research by Massignan and Castin (Phys Rev A 74:0…
We report sympathetic cooling of $^{113}$Cd$^+$ by laser-cooled $^{40}$Ca$^+$ in a linear Paul trap for microwave clocks. Long-term low-temperature confinement of $^{113}$Cd$^+$ ions was achieved. The temperature of these ions was measured at $90(10)$ mK, and the corresponding uncertainty arising from the second-order Doppler shifts was estimated to a level of $2\times10^{-17}$. Up to $4.2\times10^5$ Cd$^+$ ions were confined in the trap, and the confinement time constant was measured to be 84 hours. After three hours of confinement, there were still $10^5$ Cd$^+$ ions present, indicating that…
How long antihydrogen atoms linger in the ALPHA magnetic trap is an important characteristic of the ALPHA apparatus. The initial trapping experiments in 2010 [1] were conducted with 38 detected antiatoms confined for 172 ms and in 2011 [2] with seven for 1000 s. Long confinement times are necessary to perform detailed frequency scans during spectroscopic measurements. An analysis carried out, using machine learning methods, on more than 1000 antiatoms confined for several hours in the ALPHA-2 magnetic trap, yields a preliminary lower limit to the lifetime of 66 hours. Hence this observation su…
We report on a simple novel trapping scheme for the generation of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{87}$Rb atoms. This scheme employs a near-infrared single beam optical dipole trap combined with a weak magnetic quadrupole field as used for magneto-optical trapping to enhance the confinement in axial direction. Efficient forced evaporative cooling to the phase transition is achieved in this weak hybrid trap via reduction of the laser intensity of the optical dipole trap at constant magnetic field gradient.
Atoms made of a particle and an antiparticle are unstable, usually surviving less than a microsecond. Antihydrogen, made entirely of antiparticles, is believed to be stable, and it is this longevity that holds the promise of precision studies of matter-antimatter symmetry. We have recently demonstrated trapping of antihydrogen atoms by releasing them after a confinement time of 172 ms. A critical question for future studies is: how long can anti-atoms be trapped? Here we report the observation of anti-atom confinement for 1000 s, extending our earlier results by nearly four orders of magnitude…
We study the system of two ultracold atoms in a three-dimensional (3D) or two-dimensional (2D) completely anisotropic harmonic trap. We derive the algebraic equation J_{3D}(E) = 1/a_{3D} (J_{2D}(E) = ln a_{2D}) for the eigen-energy E of this system in the 3D (2D) case, with a_{3D} and a_{2D} being the corresponding s-wave scattering lengths, and provide the analytical expressions of the functions J_{3D}(E) and J_{2D}(E). In previous researches this type of equation was obtained for spherically or axially symmetric harmonic traps (T. Busch, et. al., Found. Phys. 28, 549 (1998); Z. Idziaszek and…
We present measurements of the total elastic and resonant charge-exchange ion-atom collision rate coefficient $k_\mathrm{ia}$ of cold sodium (\ce{Na}) with optically-dark low energy \ce{Na+} ions in a hybrid ion-neutral trap. To determine $k_\mathrm{ia}$, we measured the trap loading and loss from both a \ce{Na} magneto-optical trap (MOT) and a linear radio frequency quadrupole Paul trap. We found the total rate coefficient to be $7.4 \pm 1.9 \times 10^{-8}$ cm$^3$/s for the type I \ce{Na} MOT immersed within an $\approx 140$ K ion cloud and $1.10 \pm 0.25 \times 10^{-7}$ cm$^3$/s for the type…
We describe the production of large ${}^{23} \mathrm{Na}$ Bose-Einstein condensates in a hybrid trap characterized by a weak magnetic field quadrupole and a tightly focused infrared beam. The use of small magnetic field gradients makes the trap compatible with the state-of-the-art magnetic shields. By taking advantage of the deep cooling and high efficiency of gray molasses to improve the initial trap loading conditions, we produce condensates composed of as much as $7$ million atoms in less than $30 \; \mathrm{s}$.
We report the magnetic confinement of neutral, ground state hydroxyl radicals (OH) at a density of $\sim3\times10^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$ and temperature of $\sim$30 mK. An adjustable electric field of sufficient magnitude to polarize the OH is superimposed on the trap in either a quadrupole or homogenous field geometry. The OH is confined by an overall potential established via molecular state mixing induced by the combined electric and magnetic fields acting on the molecule's electric dipole and magnetic dipole moments, respectively. An effective molecular Hamiltonian including Stark and Zeeman terms…
We report on the production of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a simplified vacuum apparatus. Magneto-optical traps with large numbers and ultra-high vacuum for moderately long conservative trap lifetimes of 16 seconds are sequentially obtained with light induced rapid atomic vapor pressure modulation. Subsequent evaporative cooling is carried out in two stages in a hybrid magnetic quadrupole plus optical dipole trap. High evaporation efficiencies are observed in both stages and $^{87}$Rb BECs with more than 10$^5$ atoms can be reliably produced with total evaporation time of only 9.5 s…
We present measurements of the charge-exchange reaction rate between neutral sodium (Na) and ionized calcium (\ce{Ca+}) in a hybrid atom-ion trap, which is comprised of a Na magneto-optical trap concentric with a linear Paul trap. Once the Na and \ce{Ca+} are co-trapped, the reaction rate is measured by continuously quenching the reaction product \ce{Na+} from the ion trap, and then destructively measuring the decay of the remaining ion population. The reactants' electronic state and temperature are experimentally controlled, allowing us to determine the four individual reaction-rates between …
We present a scheme for cavity-assisted generation of hybrid entanglement between a moving mirror belonging to an optomechanical cavity and a single trapped ion located inside a second cavity. Due to radiation pressure, it is possible to entangle the moving mirror with one of the cavity fields. Also, by tuning the second cavity field with the internal degrees of freedom of the ion, an entangled state of the cavity field/ion can be independently generated. The fields leaking from each cavity are then combined in a beam-splitter, and following the detection of the outgoing photons by convenientl…
Hybrid traps for the simultaneous confinement of neutrals and ions have recently emerged as versatile tools for studying interactions between these species at very low temperatures. Such traps rely on the combination of different types of external fields for the confinement of either species raising the question of interactions between the individual traps. Here, the influence of a strongly inhomogeneous magnetic field used for trapping neutrals on the trapping and laser cooling of a single Ca$^+$ ion in a radiofrequency ion trap is studied theoretically using molecular-dynamics simulations ba…
We estimate the radiative quenching rate of the $^{40}$Ca - $^{174}$Yb$^{+}$ molecular ion and find that it under-estimates the value reported in recent experiments by about 5 orders of magnitude. We comment on possible explanations for this large discrepancy.
We present a compact experimental apparatus for Bose-Einstein condensation of $^{87}$Rb in the $|F = 2, m_F = +2\rangle$ state. A pre-cooled atomic beam of $^{87}$Rb is obtained by using an unbalanced magneto-optical trap, allowing controlled transfer of trapped atoms from the first vacuum chamber to the science chamber. Here, atoms are transferred to a hybrid trap, as produced by overlapping a magnetic quadrupole trap with a far-detuned optical trap with crossed beam configuration, where forced radiofrequency evaporation is realized. The final evaporation leading to Bose-Einstein condensation…
We report on Rydberg spectroscopy of ultracold atoms in an atom-ion hybrid trap for probing the electric fields in a mixture of atoms and ions. We obtain spectra which exhibit excitation gaps corresponding to avoided level crossings in the Stark map. From these measurements we can conclude that the ground state atoms experience electrical fields of up to 250 V/cm. There is, however, a difficulty in interpreting the results, because some data indicate that the electrical fields are produced by the ions while other data indicate that they stem from the Paul trap. We discuss possible scenarios fo…
