Mergers of binaries comprised of compact objects can give rise to explosive transient events, heralding the birth of exotic objects which cannot be formed through single star evolution. Using a large number of direct N-body simulations, we explore the possibility that a white dwarf (WD) is dynamically driven to tidal disruption by a stellar-mass black hole (BH) as a consequence of the joint effects of gravitational wave (GW) emission and Lidov-Kozai oscillations imposed by the tidal field of a outer tertiary companion orbiting the inner BH-WD binary. We explore the sensitivity of our results to the distributions of natal kick velocities imparted to the BH and WD upon formation, adiabatic mass loss, semi-major axes and eccentricities of the triples, and stellar mass ratios. We find rates of WD-TDEs in the range $1.2\times 10^{-3}-1.4$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for $z\leq 0.1$, rarer than stellar TDEs in triples by a factor of $\sim 3$--$30$. The uncertainty in the TDE rates may be greatly reduced in the future using gravitational wave (GW) observations of Galactic binaries and triples with LISA. WD-TDEs may give rise to high energy X-ray or gamma-ray transients of duration similar to long gamma-ray bursts but lacking the signatures of a core-collapse supernova, while being accompanied by a supernova-like optical transient which lasts for only days. WD--BH and WD--NS binaries will also emit GWs in the LISA band before the TDE. The discovery and identification of triple-induced WD-TDE events by future time domain surveys and/or GWs could enable the study of the demographics of BHs in nearby galaxies.
Stars passing too close to a black hole can produce tidal disruption events (TDEs), when the tidal force across the star exceeds the gravitational force that binds it. TDEs have usually been discussed in relation to massive black holes that reside in the centres of galaxies or lurk in star clusters. In this paper, we investigate the possibility that triple stars hosting a stellar black hole (SBH) may be sources of TDEs. We start from a triple system made up of three main sequence (MS) stars and model the supernova (SN) kick event that led to the production of an inner binary comprised of a SBH…
We present a qualitative picture of prompt emission from tidal disruptions of white dwarfs (WD) by intermediate mass black holes (IMBH). The smaller size of an IMBH compared to a supermassive black hole and a smaller tidal radius of a WD disruption lead to a very fast event with high peak luminosity. Magnetic field is generated in situ following the tidal disruption, which leads to effective accretion. Since large-scale magnetic field is also produced, geometrically thick super-Eddington inflow leads to a relativistic jet. The dense jet possesses a photosphere, which emits quasi-thermal radiat…
We construct a menu of objects that can give rise to bright flares when disrupted by massive black holes (BHs), ranging from planets to evolved stars. Through their tidal disruption, main sequence and evolved stars can effectively probe the existence of otherwise quiescent supermassive BHs and white dwarfs can probe intermediate mass BHs. Many low-mass white dwarfs possess extended hydrogen envelopes, which allow for the production of prompt flares in disruptive encounters with moderately massive BHs of $10^5$ to $10^7~M_\odot$--masses that may constitute the majority of massive BHs by number.…
White dwarf stars that enter the tidal radius of black holes with masses $\lesssim$ $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ are doomed to be ripped apart by tidal forces. Black holes in this mass range between stellar black holes and supermassive black holes have not been conclusively identified so the detection of a tidal disruption of a white dwarf would provide clear evidence for the existence of intermediate-mass black holes. In this review, we present a theoretical and observational overview of the transient events that result from the tidal disruptions of white dwarfs by intermediate-mass black holes. This i…
White dwarf-black hole tidal disruption events (herein WTDEs) present an opportunity to probe the quiescent intermediate mass black hole population in the universe. We run an extensive set of Monte-Carlo based simulations to explore SRG/eROSITA's detection sensitivity to WTDEs as a function of black hole mass, redshift and time offset between event flaring and it first being observed. A novel estimate of WTDE rate densities from globular clusters and dwarf galaxies is also presented. We combine this with estimated detection sensitivities to infer the rate of eROSITA detecting these events. Dep…
We suggest "tidal double detonation": a new mechanism for a thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf (WD) induced by a tidal disruption event (TDE). Tidal detonation is also a WD explosion induced by a TDE. In this case, helium (He) and carbon-oxygen (CO) detonation waves incinerate He~WD and CO~WD, respectively. On the other hand, for tidal double detonation, He detonation is first excited in the He shell of a CO~WD, and drives CO detonation in the CO core. We name this mechanism after the double detonation scenario in the context of type Ia supernovae. In this paper, we show tidal double det…
The tidal disruption of stars by (super-)massive black holes in galactic nuclei has been discussed in theoretical terms for about 30 years but only in the past decade have we been able to detect such events in substantial numbers. Thus, we are now starting to carry out observational tests of models for the disruption. We are also formulating expectations for the inspiral and disruption of white dwarfs by intermediate-mass black holes with masses $< 10^5\;{\rm M}_\odot$. Such events are very rich with information and open a new window to intermediate-mass black holes, thought to live in dwarf g…
A white dwarf (WD) captured into a high-eccentricity orbit around a massive black hole (MBH) may undergo many pericenter passages before tidal disruption. During these passages, the tidal potential of the MBH excites internal oscillations or waves in the WD, and the dissipation of these oscillations can significantly influence the physical properties of the WD prior to its disruption. We calculate the amplitude of the tidally excited gravity (buoyancy) waves in the WD as a function of the pericenter distance and eccentricity for realistic WD models, under the assumption that these outgoing gra…
We present numerical relativity results of tidal disruptions of white dwarfs from ultra-close encounters with a spinning, intermediate mass black hole. These encounters require a full general relativistic treatment of gravity. We show that the disruption process and prompt accretion of the debris strongly depend on the magnitude and orientation of the black hole spin. However, the late-time accretion onto the black hole follows the same decay, $\dot{M}$ ~ t^{-5/3}, estimated from Newtonian gravity disruption studies. We compute the spectrum of the disk formed from the fallback material using a…
We exploit more than 1000 star cluster Monte Carlo models from the MOCCA-SURVEY Database I, to infer the local rate density of white dwarf (WD) tidal disruption events (TDEs) in globular clusters (GCs) and young massive clusters (YMCs). We suggest that the WD TDE rate for GCs and YMCs in the local universe is $\sim 90$-$500~{\rm yr}^{-1}~{\rm Gpc}^{-3}$, with 90 % of WD TDEs occurring in GCs. The total WD TDE rate density is $\sim 9$-$50$ times larger than estimated before. Our results show that thermonuclear explosions induced by WD TDEs can be observed at a rate of $\sim 100$-$550~{\rm yr}^{…
Ultra-long gamma-ray bursts (ulGRBs) are a new population of GRBs with extreme durations of $\sim 10^{4}$ s. Leading candidates for their origin are blue supergiant collapsars, magnetars, and white dwarf tidal disruption events (WD-TDEs) caused by massive black holes (BHs). Recent observations of supernova-like (SN-like) bumps associated with ulGRBs challenged both the WD-TDE and the blue supergiant models because of the detection of SNe and the absence of hydrogen lines, respectively. We propose that WD-TDEs can accommodate the observed SN-like bumps if the fallback WD matter releases energy …
Recently two fast X-ray transients (XT1 and XT2) have been reported from the search in the Chandra Deep Field (CDF) data. Each transient shows an initial plateau lasting around hundreds to thousands seconds followed by a rapid decay in the light curve. In particular, CDF-S XT2 is found to be associated with a galaxy at redshift z= 0.738 and was explained as a counterpart of a binary neutron-star merger event. In this paper, motivated by the short duration and decay slopes of the two transients, we consider an alternative interpretation in which both events are accretion-driven flares from tida…
A highly unusual pair of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB060218 and an associated supernova SN2006aj has puzzled theorists for years. A supernova shock breakout and a jet from a newborn stellar mass compact object were put forward to explain its multiwavelength signature. We propose that the source is naturally explained by another channel, a tidal disruption of a white dwarf (WD) by an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The tidal disruption is accompanied by a tidal pinching, which leads to the ignition of a WD and a supernova. Some debris falls back onto the IMBH, forms a disk, which quickly am…
I suggest that the quasiperiodic ultrasoft X-ray eruptions recently observed from the galaxy GSN 069 may result from accretion from a low-mass white dwarf in a highly eccentric orbit about its central black hole. At 0.21M_sun, this star was probably the core of a captured red giant. Such events should occur in significant numbers as less extreme outcomes of whatever process leads to tidal disruption events. I show that gravitational radiation losses can drive the observed mass transfer rate, and that the precession of the white dwarf orbit may be detectable in X-rays as a superorbital quasiper…
We study the initiation of thermonuclear detonations in tidally disrupted white dwarf stars by intermediate-mass ($10^3 M_\odot$) black holes. The length scales required to resolve the initiation mechanism are not easily reached in three-dimensions, so instead we have devised two-dimensional proxy models which, together with a logarithmic gridding strategy, can adequately capture detonation wave fronts as material undergoes simultaneous compression and stretching from tidal forces. We consider 0.15 and 0.6 solar mass white dwarf stars parameterized by tidal strengths in the range $β=4~\text{to…
We study the final stages of the evolution of a binary system consisted of a black hole and a white dwarf star. We implement the quantum hydrodynamic equations and carry out numerical simulations. As a model of a white dwarf star, we consider a zero temperature droplet of attractively interacting degenerate atomic bosons and spin-polarized atomic fermions. Such mixtures are investigated experimentally nowadays. We find that the white dwarf star is stripped off its mass while passing the periastron. Due to nonlinear effects, the accretion disk originated from the white dwarf becomes fragmented …
Calcium-rich (SN 2005E-like) explosions are very faint (typical -15.5, type I supernovae (SNe) showing strong Ca-lines, mostly observed in old stellar environments. Several models for such SNe had been explored and debated, but non were able to consistently reproduce the observed properties of Ca-rich SNe, nor their rates and host-galaxy distributions. Here we show that the disruptions of low-mass carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs) by hybrid Helium-CO (HeCO) WDs during their merger could explain the origin and properties of such SNe. We make use of detailed multi-dimensional hydrodynamical-…
We present results from general relativistic calculations of the tidal disruption of white dwarf stars from near encounters with intermediate mass black holes. We follow the evolution of 0.2 and $0.6 M_\odot$ stars on parabolic trajectories that approach $10^3$ - $10^4 M_\odot$ black holes as close as a few Schwarzschild radii at periapsis, paying particular attention to the effect tidal disruption has on thermonuclear reactions and the synthesis of intermediate to heavy ion elements. These encounters create diverse thermonuclear environments characteristic of Type I supernovae and capable of …
White dwarfs (WDs) can be tidally disrupted only by massive black holes (MBHs) with masses less than $\sim10^5 M_\odot$. These tidal interactions feed material to the MBH well above its Eddington limit, with the potential to launch a relativistic jet. The corresponding beamed emission is a promising signpost to an otherwise quiescent MBH of relatively low mass. We show that the mass transfer history, and thus the lightcurve, are quite different when the disruptive orbit is parabolic, eccentric, or circular. The mass lost each orbit exponentiates in the eccentric-orbit case leading to the destr…
Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) can be accelerated by tidal disruption events of stars by black holes. We suggest a novel mechanism for UHECR acceleration wherein white dwarfs (WDs) are tidally compressed by intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), leading to their ignition and subsequent explosion as a supernova. Cosmic rays accelerated by the supernova may receive an energy boost when crossing the accretion-powered jet. The rate of encounters between WDs and IMBHs can be relatively high, as the number of IMBHs may be substantially augmented once account is taken of their likely presence…
We run a suite of hydrodynamics simulations of tidal disruption events (TDEs) of a white dwarf (WD) by a black hole (BH) with a wide range of WD/BH masses and orbital parameters. We implement nuclear reactions to study nucleosynthesis and its dynamical effect through release of nuclear energy. The released nuclear energy effectively increases the fraction of unbound ejecta. This effect is weaker for a heavy WD with 1.2 $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, because the specific orbital energy distribution of the debris is predominantly determined by the tidal force, rather than by the explosive reactions. The …
We investigate nucleosynthesis in tidal disruption events (TDEs) of white dwarfs (WDs) by intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). We consider various types of WDs with different masses and compositions by means of 3 dimensional (3D) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. We model these WDs with different numbers of SPH particles, $N$, from a few $10^4$ to a few $10^7$, in order to check mass resolution convergence, where SPH simulations with $N>10^7$ (or a space resolution of several $10^6$ cm) have unprecedentedly high resolution in this kind of simulations. We find that nuclear re…

Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are thought to originate from the thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs). The proposed progenitors of standard type Ia SNe have been studied for decades and can be, generally, divided into explosions of CO WDs accreting material from stellar non-degenerate companions (single-degenerate; SD models), and those arising from the explosive interaction of two CO WDs (double-degenerate; DD models). However, current models for the progenitors of such SNe fail to reproduce the diverse properties of the observed explosions, nor do they explain the infe…
We discuss the gravitational wave emission and the orbital evolution of a hierarchical triple system composed of an inner binary black hole (BBH) and an outer tertiary. Depending on the kick velocity at the merger, the merged BBH could tidally disrupt the tertiary. Even though the fraction of BBH mergers accompanied by such disruptions is expected to be much smaller than unity, the existence of a tertiary and its basic parameters (e.g. semimajor axis, projected mass) can be examined for more than 1000 BBHs with the space GW detector LISA and its follow-on missions. This allows us to efficientl…
This is a White Paper in support of the mission concept of the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT), proposed as a medium-sized ESA mission. We discuss the potential of LOFT for the study of jetted tidal disruption events. For a summary, we refer to the paper.
For ultra-wide systems (with outer orbit >$10^{3}{\rm AU})$ the galactic field is collisional. Hence, ultra-wide triple white-dwarfs (TWDs) can be perturbed, by flyby stars, to sufficiently high outer eccentricity such that the triple becomes dynamically unstable. An unstable triple undergoes multiple binary-single resonant encounters between all three WDs. These encounters might result in a direct collision between any random two WDs and lead to a Type Ia supernova (SN) event. In case where the multiple resonant encounters did not produce a collision a compact binary is formed (while the thir…
An extreme-mass-ratio system composed of a white dwarf (WD) and a massive black hole can be observed by the low-frequency gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). When the mass of the black hole is around $10^4 \sim 10^5 M_\odot$, the WD will be disrupted by the tidal interaction at the final inspiraling stage. The event position and time of the tidal disruption of the WD can be accurately determined by the gravitational wave signals. Such position and time depend upon the mass of the black hole and especially on the density of the WD. We present the…

The bright transient AT2018cow has been unlike any other known type of transient. Its high brightness, rapid rise and decay and initially nearly featureless spectrum are unprecedented and difficult to explain using models for similar burst sources. We present evidence for faint gamma-ray emission continuing for at least 8 days, and featureless spectra in the ultraviolet bands -- both unusual for eruptive sources. The X-ray variability of the source has a burst-like character. The UV-optical spectrum does not show any CNO line but is well described by a blackbody. We demonstrate that a model in…
We study the emission properties of thermonuclear explosions in a helium white dwarf (WD) tidal disruption event (TDE). We consider a TDE where a 0.2 $M_{\odot}$ helium WD is disrupted by a $10^{2.5}\,M_{\odot}$ intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). The helium WD is not only tidally disrupted but is also detonated by the tidal compression and by succeeding shocks. We focus on the emission powered by radioactive nuclei in the unbound TDE ejecta. We perform hydrodynamic simulations coupled with nuclear reactions, post-process detailed nucleosynthesis calculations, and then radiative transfer simu…
The close encounter of a white dwarf (WD) with a black hole (BH) could result in the tidal disruption of the WD. During this encounter, the WD can undergo a thermonuclear explosion due to its tidal compression, resulting in an optical transient similar to a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), hereafter a Ia-TDE. Nevertheless, this will only be physically observable if the BH is $\lesssim 10^5$M$_\odot$. Finding a Ia-TDE would therefore imply the discovery of an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) $\lesssim 10^5$ M$_\odot$. Here, we search the entire Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) alert stream for the …
We construct time-dependent one-dimensional (vertically averaged) models of accretion disks produced by the tidal disruption of a white dwarf (WD) by a binary neutron star (NS) companion. Nuclear reactions in the disk midplane burn the WD matter to increasingly heavier elements at sequentially smaller radii, releasing substantial energy which can impact the disk dynamics. A model for disk outflows is employed, by which cooling from the outflow balances other sources of heating (viscous, nuclear) in regulating the Bernoulli parameter of the midplane to a fixed value $\lesssim 0$. We perform a c…

Effects of a new triple-alpha reaction rate on the ignition of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs accreting helium in a binary systems have been investigated. The ignition points determine the properties of a thermonuclear explosion of a Type Ia supernova. We examine the cases of different accretion rates of helium and different initial masses of the white dwarf, which was studied in detail by Nomoto. We find that for all cases from slow to intermediate accretion rates, nuclear burnings are ignited at the helium layers. As a consequence, carbon deflagration would be triggered for the lower accretion r…
In this paper, we model the observable signatures of tidal disruptions of white dwarf (WD) stars by massive black holes (MBHs) of moderate mass, $\approx 10^3 - 10^5 M_\odot$. When the WD passes deep enough within the MBH's tidal field, these signatures include thermonuclear transients from burning during maximum compression. We combine a hydrodynamic simulation that includes nuclear burning of the disruption of a $0.6 M_\odot$ C/O WD with a Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculation to synthesize the properties of a representative transient. The transient's emission emerges in the optical, wi…
The millisecond pulsar in a triple system (PSR J0337+1715, recently discovered by Ransom et al.) is an unusual neutron star with two orbiting white dwarfs. The existence of such a system in the Galactic field poses new challenges to stellar astrophysics for understanding evolution, interactions and mass-transfer in close multiple stellar systems. In addition, this system provides the first precise confirmation for a very wide-orbit system of the white dwarf mass-orbital period relation. Here we present a self-consistent, semi-analytical solution to the formation of PSR J0337+1715. Our model co…
Multiple star systems interact strongly with Galactic field stars when the outer semi-major axis of a triple or multiple star is > 10 3 AU. Stable triples composed of two white-dwarfs (WD) and a low mass main sequence (MS) star in a wide outer orbit can thus be destabilized by gravitational interactions with random field stars. Such interactions excite the eccentricity of the distant third star sufficiently so that it begins to interact significantly with the inner binary. When this occurs the triple undergoes multiple binary-single resonant encounters. These encounters may result either in a …
Motivated by an improved multi-wavelength observational coverage of the transient sky, we investigate the importance of relativistic effects in disruptions of stars by non-spinning black holes (BHs). This paper focuses on calculating the ballistic rate of return of debris to the black hole as this rate is commonly assumed to be proportional to the light curve of the event. We simulate the disruption of a low mass main sequence star by BHs of varying masses ($10^5,10^6,10^7 M_\odot$) and of a white dwarf by a $10^5 M_\odot$ BH. Based on the orbital energy as well as angular momentum of the debr…

In this paper we derive the gravitational wave stochastic background from tidal disruption events (TDEs). We focus on both the signal emitted by main sequence stars disrupted by super-massive black holes (SMBHs) in galaxy nuclei, and on that from disruptions of white dwarfs by intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) located in globular clusters. We show that the characteristic strain $h_{\rm c}$'s dependence on frequency is shaped by the pericenter distribution of events within the tidal radius, and under standard assumptions $h_{\rm c} \propto f^{-1/2}$. This is because the TDE signal is a burs…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) could arise from mergers of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (WDs) triggered by Lidov-Kozai (LK) oscillations in hierarchical triple-star systems. However, predicted merger rates are several orders of magnitude lower than the observed SNe Ia rate. The low predicted rates can be attributed in part to the fact that many potential WD-merger progenitor systems, with high mutual orbital inclination, merge or interact before the WD stage. Recently, evidence was found for the existence of natal kicks imparted on WDs with a typical magnitude of 0.75 km/s. In triples, kicks change…
Tidal disruption events (TDEs) by supermassive or intermediate mass black holes have been suggested as candidate sources of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and high-energy neutrinos. Motivated by the recent measurements from the Pierre Auger Observatory, which indicates a metal-rich cosmic-ray composition at ultrahigh energies, we investigate the fate of UHECR nuclei loaded in TDE jets. First, we consider the production and survival of UHECR nuclei at internal shocks, external forward and reverse shocks, and nonrelativistic winds. Based on the observations of Swift J1644+57, we show that…
Close-orbit binaries consisting of two compact objects are a center of attention because of the detection of gravitational-radiation-induced mergers. The creation of close, compact-object binaries involves physical processes that are not yet well understood; there are open questions about the manner in which two compact objects come to be close enough to merge within a Hubble time. Here we explore an important, and likely common physical process: mass transfer from a third star in a wider, hierarchical orbit. Mass added to the close binary's components can reduce the time to merger and can eve…
We design a direct test of the local position invariance (LPI) in the post-Newtonian gravity, using the timing observation of the triple pulsar, PSR J0337+1715. The test takes advantage of the large gravitational acceleration exerted by the outer white dwarf to the inner neutron star -- white dwarf binary. Using machine-precision three-body simulations and dedicated Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques with various sampling strategies and noise realizations, we estimate that the Whitehead's parameter could have already been limited to $|ξ| \lesssim 0.4$ (95\% CL), with the published timi…
