Single-photon counters are single-pixel binary devices that click upon the absorption of a photon but obscure its spectral information, whereas resolving the colour of detected photons has been in critical demand for frontier astronomical observation, spectroscopic imaging and wavelength division multiplexed quantum communications. Current implementations of single-photon spectrometers either consist of bulky wavelength-scanning components or have limited detection channels, preventing parallel detection of broadband single photons with high spectral resolutions. Here, we present the first broadband chip-scale single-photon spectrometer covering both visible and infrared wavebands spanning from 600nm to 2000nm. The spectrometer integrates an on-chip dispersive echelle grating with a single-element propagating superconducting nanowire detector of ultraslow-velocity for mapping the dispersed photons with high spatial resolutions. The demonstrated on-chip single-photon spectrometer features small device footprint, high robustness with no moving parts and meanwhile offers more than 200 equivalent wavelength detection channels with further scalability.
Recent advancements in silicon photonics are enabling the development of chip-scale photonics devices for sensing and signal processing applications, among which on-chip spectrometers are of particular interest for precision wavelength monitoring and related applications. Most chip-scale spectrometers suffer from a resolution-bandwidth trade-off, thus limiting the uses of the device. Here we report on a novel passive, chip-scale, hybrid speckle-enhanced Fourier transform device that exhibits a two order-of-magnitude improvement in finesse (bandwidth/resolution) over the state-of-the art chip-s…

As an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been realized both in plasmonic metamaterial and waveguide structures. Via near-field coupling within unit cells, PIT with broadband could be produced by plasmonic metamaterials, which, however, has not been realized in on-chip plasmonic waveguide structures. Here, we introduce broadband PIT based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Utilizing the direct coupling structure, PIT emerges based on an easy-fabricated structure without gap. By tuning coupling distance, th…
A micro-ring-resonator (MRR) optical biosensor based on the evanescent field sensing mechanism has been extensively studied due to its high sensitivity and compact device size. However, a suitable on-chip integrated spectrometer device has to be demonstrated for the lab-on-a-chip applications, which can read the resonance wavelength shift from MRR biosensors based on minuscule changes in refractive index. In this paper, we demonstrated the design and experimental results of the near-infrared lab-on-a-chip optical biosensor platform that monolithically integrates the MRR and the on-chip spectro…
We present an ultra-compact single-shot spectrometer on silicon platform with broad operation bandwidth and high resolution. It consists of 32 stratified waveguide filters (SWFs) with diverse transmission spectra for sampling the unknown spectrum of the input signal and a specially designed ultra-compact structure for splitting the incident signal into 32 filters with low imbalance. Each SWF has a footprint less than 1um x 30um, while the 1x32 splitter and 32 filters in total occupy an area of about 35um x 260um, which to the best of our knowledge, is the smallest footprint spectrometer realiz…
We present a chip-scale scanning dual-comb spectroscopy (SDCS) approach for broadband ultrahigh-resolution spectral acquisition. SDCS uses Si3N4 microring resonators that generate two single soliton micro-combs spanning 37 THz (300 nm) on the same chip from a single 1550-nm laser, forming a high-mutual-coherence dual-comb. We realize continuous tuning of the dual-comb system over the entire optical span of 37.5 THz with high precision using integrated microheater-based wavelength trackers. This continuous wavelength tuning is enabled by simultaneous tuning of the laser frequency and the two si…
Optical spectrum analysis is the cornerstone of spectroscopic sensing, optical network performance monitoring, and hyperspectral imaging. While conventional high-performance spectrometers used to perform such analysis are often large benchtop instruments, on-chip spectrometers have recently emerged as a promising alternative with apparent Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) advantages. Existing on-chip spectrometer designs, however, are limited in spectral channel count and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we demonstrate a transformative on-chip digital Fourier transform (dFT) spectrometer that ca…

Generating entanglement over a wide spectral region has proven to be useful in a wide variety of applications including quantum metrology, spectroscopy and sensing, and optical communication. However, generation of broadband photon pairs with temporal coherence approaching an optical cycle on a chip is yet to be seen. Here we demo…
Miniaturized, low-cost wavelength detectors are gaining enormous interest as we step into the new age of photonics. Incompatibility with integrated circuits or complex fabrication requirement in most of the conventionally used filters necessitates the development of a simple, on-chip platform for easy-to-use wavelength detection system. Also, intensity fluctuations hinder precise, noise free detection of spectral information. Here we propose a novel approach of utilizing wavelength sensitive photocurrent across semiconductor heterojunctions to experimentally validate broadband wavelength detec…
Efficient fiber-to-chip coupling has been a major hurdle to cost-effective packaging and scalable interconnections of photonic integrated circuits. Conventional photonic packaging methods relying on edge or grating coupling are constrained by high insertion losses, limited bandwidth density, narrow band operation, and sensitivity to misalignment. Here we present a new fiber-to-chip coupling scheme based on free-form reflective micro-optics. A design approach which simplifies the high-dimensional free-form optimization problem to as few as two full-wave simulations is implemented to empower com…

Traditional photonic integrated circuit (PIC) inherits the mature CMOS fabrication process from the electronic integrated circuit (IC) industry. However, this process also limits the PIC structure to a single-waveguide-layer configuration. In this work, we explore the possibility of the multi-waveguide-layer PIC by proposing and demonstrating a true 3-D optical phased array (OPA) device, with the light exiting from the edge of the device, based on a multi-layer Si3N4/SiO2 platform. The multi-waveguide-layer configuration offers the possibility of utilizing edge couplers at both the input and t…
We experimentally demonstrate the operation of a spin-wave Rowland spectrometer. In the proposed device geometry, spin waves are coherently excited on a diffraction grating and form an interference pattern that spatially separates spectral components of the incoming signal. The diffraction grating was created by focused-ion-beam irradiation, which was found to locally eliminate the ferrimagnetic properties of YIG, without removing the material. We found that in our experiments spin waves were created by an indirect mechanism, by exploiting nonlinear resonance between the grating and the coplan…
